Safety Assurance of Software and Machine Learning Development for Nuclear Instrumentation and Controls

Digital instrumentation and control (DI&C) systems monitor and control parameters in nuclear power plants. Ensuring their safety is a critical part of ensuring overall plant safety. Nuclear power plant licensing generates thousands of safety documents that could be organized more effectively using a safety assurance case (SAC). We conducted a literature survey of SACs and created a SAC framework for DI&C software using Goal Structuring Notation (GSN). This framework focuses on four software development processes: management & assurance, pre-developed software (PDS) qualification, the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), and the Machine Learning Development Life Cycle (MLDLC). We organized our framework using a novel level structure that can be applied to other SACs to improve their clarity. Finally, we demonstrate how our framework can be incorporated as part of a SAC for a larger reactor system.

Quality assurance and quality control of the $26~\text {m}^2$ SiPM production for the DarkSide-20k dark matter experiment

DarkSide-20k is a novel liquid argon dark matter detector currently under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) that will push the sensitivity for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) detection into the neutrino fog. The core of the apparatus is a dual-phase Time Projection Chamber (TPC), filled with 50 tonnes of low radioactivity underground argon (UAr) acting as the WIMP target. NUV-HD-cryo Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM)s designed by Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) (Trento, Italy) were selected as the photon sensors covering two $10.5~\text {m}^2$ Optical Planes, one at each end of the TPC, and a total of $5~\text {m}^2$ photosensitive surface for the liquid argon veto detectors. This paper describes the Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) plan and procedures accompanying the production of FBK NUV-HD-cryo SiPM wafers manufactured by LFoundry s.r.l. (Avezzano, AQ, Italy). SiPM characteristics are measured at 77 K at the wafer level with a custom-designed probe station. As of March 2025, 1314 of the 1400 production wafers (94% of the total) for DarkSide-20k were tested. The wafer yield is $93.2\pm 2.5$%, which exceeds the 80% specification defined in the original DarkSide-20k production plan.

Expected sensitivity to 128 Te neutrinoless double beta decay with the CUORE TeO 2 cryogenic bolometers

The CUORE experiment is a ton-scale array of TeO 2 cryogenic bolometers located at the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), in Italy. The CUORE detector consists of 988 crystals operated as source and detector at a base temperature of ~ 10 mK. Such cryogenic temperature is reached and maintained by means of a custom built cryogen-free dilution cryostat, designed with the aim of minimizing the vibrational noise and the environmental radioactivity. The primary goal of CUORE is the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te , but thanks to its large target mass and ultra-low background it is suitable for the study of other rare processes as well, such as the neutrinoless double beta decay of 128 Te. This tellurium isotope is an attractive candidate for the search of this process, due to its high natural isotopic abundance of 31.75%. The transition energy at (866.7 ± 0.7) keV lies in a highly populated region of the energy spectrum, dominated by the contribution of the two-neutrino double beta decay of 130 Te. As the first ton-scale infrastructure operating cryogenic TeO 2 bolometers in stable conditions, CUORE is able to achieve a factor > 10 higher sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay of this isotope with respect to past direct experiments.

Measurement of the $K^{+} → π^{+} γγ$ decay

A sample of 3984 candidates of the $K^{+} → π^{+} γγ$ decay, with an estimated background of 291 ± 14 events, was collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN during 2017–2018. In order to describe the observed di-photon mass spectrum, the next-to-leading order contribution in chiral perturbation theory was found to be necessary. The decay branching ratio in the full kinematic range is measured to be (9.61 ± 0.17) x 10 -7 . The first search for production and prompt decay of an axion-like particle with gluon coupling in the process $K^{+} → π^{+} a$, $a → γγ$ is also reported.

Reduced Energetic Disorders in Dion–Jacobson Perovskites for Efficient and Spectral Stable Blue LEDs

Metal halide perovskites have witnessed great success in green, red, and near-infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs), yet blue LEDs still lag behind. Reducing undesired energetic disorders – broad n -phases and halide segregation – is considered as the most critical strategy to further improve the performances. Here, the study reports a newly designed and synthesized di-ammonium ligand with rigid π -conjugated rings and additional methyl groups to construct Dion–Jacobson (DJ) structure. Augmented coordination from the extra ammonium site and increased effective bulkiness from methyl groups lead to better distribution control over conventional mono-ammonium ligands. This enhances the radiative recombination of blue emissions in the film with homogeneous energy landscape and improved surface morphology, as evidenced by a series of imaging and mapping techniques. As a result, it demonstrates DJ perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) with peak external quantum efficiencies of ≈4% at 484 nm and ≈11% at 494 nm, which are among the top reported for pure DJ phase-based PeLEDs in the corresponding wavelength regions. The results deepen the understanding of regulating energetic disorders in perovskite materials via molecular engineering.

Green Electrode Processing Enabled by Fluoro-Free Multifunctional Binders for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The eco-friendly processing of conjugated polymer binder for lithium-ion batteries demands improved polymer solubility by introducing functional moieties, while this strategy will concurrently sacrifice polymer conductivity. Employing the polyfluorene-based binder poly(2,7-9,9 (di(oxy-2,5,8-trioxadecane))fluorene) (PFO), soluble in water-ethanol mixtures, a novel approach is presented to solve this trade-off, which features integration of aqueous solution processing with subsequent controlled thermal-induced cleavage of solubilizing side chains, to produce hierarchically ordered structures (HOS). The thermal processing can enhance the intermolecular π–π stacking of polyfluorene backbone for better electrochemical performance. Notably, HOS-PFO demonstrated a substantial 6–7 orders of magnitude enhancement in electronic conductivity, showcasing its potential as a functional binder for lithium-ion batteries. As an illustration, HOS-PFO protected SiOx anodes, utilizing in situ side chain decomposition of PFO surrounding SiOx particles after aqueous processing are fabricated. HOS-PFO contributed to the stable cycling and high-capacity retention of practical SiOx anodes (3.0 mAh cm -2 ), without the use of any conducting carbon additives or fluorinated electrolyte additives. It is proposed that this technique represents a universal approach for fabricating electrodes with conjugated polymer binders from aqueous solutions without compromising conductivity.

Investigating the potential of a higher reactivity fuel to achieve faster heat-up of aftertreatment systems

Shortening the aftertreatment system heat-up period will be crucial to meet upcoming emissions regulations, which mandate significant reductions in tail-pipe emissions for on-road heavy-duty vehicles. This work studies the impact of increasing fuel reactivity on the combustion of post injections during the expansion stroke. The work demonstrates an operating strategy using a blend of di-butyl ether (a potential low-carbon biofuel component) and #2 diesel that achieves higher exhaust enthalpy, while maintaining similar engine-out emissions (NOx and combustion efficiency) in comparison to the baseline #2 diesel fuel (cetane number 41). On average, a 12% increase in exhaust enthalpy was observed for the blend (cetane number 60) relative to the baseline fuel. The ability to operate the higher reactivity fuel at a more retarded post-injection timing, where combustion with #2 diesel was found to be more unstable, and less complete was key to achieving higher exhaust enthalpy. However, a small fuel penalty (3%–5%) was also associated with the higher reactivity fuel with this operating strategy. The formation of fuel lean regions, due to the long ignition delays at late injection conditions, was predicted to be the leading contributor to the increased emissions of products of partial combustion. Here, chemical kinetic simulations using surrogates for the fuels used in the experiments, demonstrated the ability of a higher cetane fuel to outperform the baseline fuel under fuel lean conditions with equivalence ratios less than 0.7.

Design, assembly and operation of a Cosmic Ray Tagger based on scintillators and SiPMs

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab aims to search for the SM forbidden μ – → e – conversion in Al muonic atoms. The signal signature consists of 104.96 MeV electrons, identified by a straw-tube tracker and a crystal calorimeter, made of two annular disks. Here, in order to calibrate the calorimeter disks with minimum ionizing particles (MIP) before the installation, we have realized a Cosmic Ray Tagger (CRT) at Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF) of INFN. The CRT consists of two planes of eight 2.5 x 1.5 x 160 cm 3 plastic scintillator (EJ-200) bars, coupled to SiPMs on both edges, so as to estimate longitudinal hit positions from time differences. 3D MIP tracking is achieved by reconstructing hit positions in the two planes, placed above and below the disks, and allows to calibrate the energy response, to align the time offsets, and to study the detector performances dependence along the crystals axis.

Observation of e⁺e⁻ → pp$\bar{p}\bar{n}\pi^-$ + c. c.

Using data taken at 29 center-of-mass energies between 4.16 and 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of approximately 18.8 fb -1 , the process e⁺e⁻ → pp$\overline{p}\overline{n}\pi^-$ + c. c. is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 11.5σ. The average Born cross sections in the energy ranges of (4.160, 4.380) GeV, (4.400, 4.600) GeV and (4.610, 4.700) GeV are measured to be (21.5 ± 5.7 ± 1.2) fb, (46.3 ± 10.6 ± 2.5) fb and (59.0 ± 9.4 ± 3.2) fb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The line shapes of the $\overline{p}\overline{n}$ and ppπ⁻ invariant mass spectra are consistent with phase space distributions, indicating that no hexaquark or di-baryon state is observed.

Evidence for Nonlinear Gluon Effects in QCD and Their Mass Number Dependence at STAR

The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of back-to-back azimuthal correlations of di-π 0 s produced at forward pseudorapidities (2.6<η<4.0) in p+p, p+Al, and p+Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. We observe a clear suppression of the correlated yields of back-to-back π 0 pairs in p+Al and p+Au collisions compared to the p+p data. The observed suppression of back-to-back pairs as a function of transverse momentum suggests nonlinear gluon dynamics arising at high parton densities. Furthermore, the larger suppression found in p+Au relative to p+Al collisions exhibits a dependence of the saturation scale $Q^{2}_{s}$ on the mass number A . A linear scaling of the suppression with A 1/3 is observed with a slope of -0.09±0.01.

Expanded Capabilities and Opportunities for Virtual Beamline Code

In the 25 years since LLNL broke ground on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) - a cornerstone of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Stockpile Stewardship Program - the NIF and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate has steadily pushed the boundaries of laser physics, nonlinear optics, and photonics in service of inertial confinement fusion experiments, and advanced photon sources development. Beyond the 192 beamlines of the primary laser facility with its world-record energy and fusion yields, NIF&PS capabilities have expanded to include chirped-pulse amplification, kilojoule petawatt-class short-pulse systems to generate hard x-ray radiographic probes, high-average power lasers as secondary sources for generation or wake field particle acceleration along directed energy applications, and other scientific pursuits. The Computing Directorate partners with NIF&PS on numerous projects and technologies from diagnostic measurements and high performance control systems to data analysis, information technology infrastructure, and scientific simulation code development. “This strong collaboration enables cutting-edge science, particularly with regard to physics-based modeling and simulation,” says physicist Jean-Michel Di Nicola. One crucial capability for NIF&PS is the Virtual Beamline (VBL) laser simulation code. It can model all the major laser physics and technology involved in the design optimization, commissioning, and operations of advanced laser architectures from tabletop to NIF-scale. VBL provides researchers with high-fidelity models and high-resolution calculations of laser performance predictions—including for the entire NIF laser system, the Advanced Radiographic Capability, parts of the High Repetition-Rate Advanced Petawatt Laser System laser delivered to the Czech Republic, and the Optical Science Laser. After more than two decades of experimentally verified physics and computing enhancements, this unique workhorse code is wrapping up another major milestone: migration from Java to C++ with a flurry of user interface and optimization features, as well as laser physics and high-resolution enhancements thanks to parallel execution on Livermore Computing platforms.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Sensitization for Highly Efficient Blue Fluorescent Emitters

Hyperfluorescence is emerging as a powerful strategy to develop optoelectronic devices with high-color purity and enhanced stability. It requires appropriate integration of a sensitizer displaying efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and an emitter displaying strong, narrow-band fluorescence. Here, through a joint computational and experimental approach, we provide an unprecedented, end-to-end systems level description of the electronic and optical processes that take place in a hyperfluorescent emissive layer composed of a TADF sensitizer, bis(2,5-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (4CzDPO), and a fluorescent emitter, 2,5,8,11-tetra-tert-butylperylene (TBPe). We combine the photophysical properties measurement of the emissive layer with the computational determination of the electronic properties, film morphology, and excitation transfer phenomena. The Förster resonance energy transfer rates from 4CzDPO to TBPe are on the order of 1011 s–1, considerably higher than the radiative and non-radiative recombination rates for 4CzDPO. These features ensure nearly complete energy transfer to TBPe, leading to a five-fold increase in the photoluminescence quantum yields in the 4CzDPO:TBPe system in comparison to neat films of 4CzDPO. Furthermore, our approach highlights the factors that can provide efficient energy transfer from TADF molecules to fluorescent emitters, suppress energy transfer among TADF molecules, and avoid the need for a host material within the emissive layer.

Effect of Palladium‐Tetrakis(Triphenylphosphine) Catalyst Traces on Charge Recombination and Extraction in Non‐Fullerene‐based Organic Solar Cells

Abstract The effect of the cross‐coupling catalyst tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) (Pd(PPh 3 ) 4 ) on the performance of a model organic bulk‐heterojunction solar cell composed of a blend of poly([2,6′‐4,8‐di(5‐ethylhexylthienyl)benzo[1,2‐b;3,3‐b]dithiophene]{3‐fluoro‐2[(2‐ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4‐b]thiophenediyl}) (PTB7‐Th) donor and 3,9‐bis(2‐methylene‐((3‐(1,1‐dicyanomethylene)‐6,7‐difluoro)‐indanone))‐5,5,11,11‐tetrakis(4‐hexylphenyl)‐dithieno[2,3‐d:2′,3′‐d′]‐s‐indaceno[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene (IOTIC‐4F) non‐fullerene acceptor is investigated. The effect of intentional addition of different amounts of Pd(PPh 3 ) 4 on morphology, free charge carrier generation, non‐geminate bulk trap‐ and surface trap‐assisted recombination as well as bimolecular recombination and charge extraction is quantified. This work shows that free charge carrier generation is affected significantly, while the impact of Pd(PPh 3 ) 4 on non‐geminate recombination processes is limited because the catalyst does not facilitate efficient trap‐assisted recombination. The studied system shows substantial robustness towards the addition of Pd(PPh 3 ) 4 in small amounts.

Surface Ligand Management Aided by a Secondary Amine Enables Increased Synthesis Yield of CsPbI 3 Perovskite Quantum Dots and High Photovoltaic Performance

Lead-halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) or more broadly, nanocrystals possess advantageous features for solution-processed photovoltaic devices. The nanocrystal surface ligands play a crucial role in the transport of photogenerated carriers and ultimately affect the overall performance of PQD solar cells. Here, significantly improved CsPbI 3 PQD synthetic yield and solar-cell performance through surface ligand management are demonstrated. The treatment of a secondary amine, di- n -propylamine (DPA), provides a mild and efficient approach to control the surface ligand density of PQDs, which has an apparently different working mechanism compared to previously reported surface treatments. Using an optimal DPA concentration, the treatment can simultaneously remove both long-chain insulating surface ligands of oleic acid and oleylamine, even for unpurified PQDs with high ligand density. As a result, the electrical coupling between PQDs is enhanced, leading to improved charge transport, reduced carrier recombination, and a high power conversion efficiency approaching 15% for CsPbI 3 -PQD-based solar cells. In addition, the production yield of CsPbI 3 PQDs can be increased by a factor of 8. These results highlight the importance of developing new ligand-management strategies, specifically for emerging PQDs to achieve scalable and high-performance perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.

Tuning Conjugated Polymer Chain Packing for Stretchable Semiconductors

We report in order to apply polymer semiconductors to stretchable electronics, they need to be easily deformed under strain without being damaged. A small number of conjugated polymers, typically with semicrystalline packing structures, have been reported to exhibit mechanical stretchability. Herein, a method is reported to modify polymer semiconductor packing-structure using a molecular additive, dioctyl phthalate (DOP), which is found to act as a molecular spacer, to be inserted between the amorphous chain networks and disrupt the crystalline packing. As a result, large-crystal growth is suppressed while short-range aggregations of conjugated polymers are promoted, which leads to an improved mechanical stretchability without affecting charge-carrier transport. Due to the reduced conjugated polymer intermolecular interactions, strain-induced chain alignment and crystallization are observed. By adding DOP to a well-known conjugated polymer, poly[2,5-bis(4-decyltetradecyl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-(2H,5H)-dione-(E)-1,2-di(2,2 '-bithiophen-5-yl)ethene] (DPPTVT), stretchable transistors are obtained with anisotropic charge-carrier mobilities under strain, and stable current output under strain up to 100%.

Transparent and Conductive Polyimide‐Ionene Hybrid Interlayers for High Performance and Cost‐Effective Semitransparent Organic Solar Cells

The contradiction between high transmittance and favorable conductivity poses a great challenge in developing effective cathode interlayer (CIL) materials with sufficient thickness tolerance, which hinders the further advancement of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a completely new class of alcohol processable polyimide-ionene hybrids (PIIHs) is proposed by melding pyromellitic diimide (PMD) subunits into imidazolium-based ionenes backbone covalently. These PIIHs, named PMD-DI and PMD-PD, boast high transparency, suitable energy levels, and decent conductivity. A higher PMD content endows PMD-PD with improved work function tunability, electrical properties, and crystallinity, enabling PMD-PD as CIL material with excellent thickness-insensitive characteristics, while simultaneously improving device stability significantly. Furthermore, PMD-PD also exhibits good compatibility with various electrodes and active layers, offering solar cell efficiencies of up to 19.91% and 19.29% with Ag and Cu cathodes, respectively. More importantly, the application of PMD-PD can improve the performance of semi-transparent OSCs without losing transmittance, thereby drastically enhancing the light utilization efficiency to 4.04% with an ultrathin, low-cost Cu cathode, that competes with leading optical modulation-free semitransparent OSCs with expensive Ag cathodes. This work opens a pathway to realize transparent and conductive interlayers by strategic molecular design, leading to highly efficient, stable, and cost-effective OSCs suitable for diverse applications.
