Life sciences Spacelab Mission Development test 3 (SMD 3) data management report

Development of a permanent data system for SMD tests was studied that would simulate all elements of the shuttle onboard, telemetry, and ground data systems that are involved with spacelab operations. The onboard data system (ODS) and the ground data system (GDS) were utilized. The air-to-ground link was simulated by a hardwired computer-to-computer interface. A patch board system was used on board to select experiment inputs, and the downlink configuration from the ODS was changed by a crew keyboard entry to support each experiment. The ODS provided a CRT display of experiment parameters to enable the crew to monitor experiment performance. An onboard analog system, with recording capability, was installed to handle high rate data and to provide a backup to the digital system. The GDS accomplished engineering unit conversion and limit sensing, and provided realtime parameter display on CRT's in the science monitoring area and the test control area.

Investigation of Antarctic crust and upper mantle using MAGSAT and other geophysical data

Progress in processing and analysis of Investigator B MAGSAT data is reported. Data processing tasks required prior to data analysis, including translation and reformatting of tapes and development of computer routines, were performed. A scalar anomaly map of Antarctica is near completion. Data analysis included a qualitative correlation of NASA's 4/81 scalar map of Antarctica with other geopotential data and correlation of POGO and continental scale gravity data with MAGSAT data. A magnetic high was found to exist over the Ross Embayment.

A discussion of certain problems connected with the design of hulls of flying boats and the use of general test data

Report presents the results of a survey of problems encountered in applying general test data to the design of flying-boat hulls. It is shown how basic design features may be readily determined from special plots of test data. A study of the effect of the size of a flying boat on the probable limits to be covered by the general test data is included and recommendations for special tests and new methods of presenting test data for direct use in design are given.

NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Report 26: The technical communication practices of aerospace engineering students: Results of the phase 3 AIAA National Student Survey

This report describes similarities and differences between undergraduate and graduate engineering students in the context of two general aspects of the educational experience. First, we explore the extent to which students differ regarding the factors that lead to the choice of becoming an engineer, current satisfaction with that choice, and career-related goals and objectives. Second, we look at the technical communication practices, habits, and training of aerospace engineering students. The reported data were obtained from a survey of student members of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The survey was undertaken as a phase 3 activity of the NASA/DoD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Data are reported for the following categories: student demographics; skill importance, skill training, and skill helpfulness; collaborative writing; computer and information technology use and importance; use of electronic networks; use and importance of libraries and library services; use and importance of information sources and products; use of foreign language technical reports; and foreign language (reading and speaking) skills.

Macro Fiber Piezocomposite Actuator Poling Study

The performance and advantages of Piezocomposite Actuators are to provide a low cost, in-situ actuator/sensor that is flexible, low profile and high strain per volt performance in the same plane of poled voltage. This paper extends reported data for the performance of these Macrofiber Composite (MFC) Actuators to include 4 progressively narrower Intedigitized electrode configurations with several line widths and spacing ratios. Data is reported for max free strain, average strain per applied volt, poling (alignment of the electric dipoles of the PZT ceramic) voltage vs. strain and capacitance, time to poling voltage 95% saturation. The output strain per volt progressively increases as electrode spacing decreases, with saturation occurring at lower poling voltages. The narrowest spacing ratio becomes prone to voltage breakdown or short circuits limiting the spacing width with current fabrication methods. The capacitance generally increases with increasing poling voltage level but has high sensitivity to factors such as temperature, moisture and time from poling which limit its usefulness as a simple indicator. The total time of applied poling voltage to saturate or fully line up the dipoles in the piezoceramic was generally on the order of 5-20 seconds. Less sensitivity to poling due to the applied rate of voltage increase over a 25 to 500 volt/second rate range was observed.

Overcoming the Challenges of Data Integration and Automation

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are gaining increased attention as a way to leverage the world's data to solve problems. Although AI and ML offer much potential, there are often misconceptions about the application of such techniques. This panel discussion includes speakers from airlines and the research community who will present machine learning approaches they have developed on a variety of aviation data including digital flight data, safety reporting data, and traffic flow data. They will explain the purpose of the application, the data used, and the lessons learned in the development and deployment of their solutions. The panel discussion will focus on common pitfalls in developing and AI solution, the dangers of the current hype around AI, tips for gaining value from a machine learning solution, how to determine whether a machine learning approach is appropriate for a problem, and more.

Description of the TCERT Vetting Reports for Data Release 25

The Q1Q17 DR25 TCERT Vetting Reports are a collection of plots and diagnostics used by the Threshold Crossing Event Review Team (TCERT) to evaluate threshold crossing events (TCEs). While designation of Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) and classification of them as Planet Candidates (PCs) or False Positives (FPs) is completely automated via a robotic vetting procedure (the Robovetter) for the Q1Q17 DR25 planet catalog, as described in Thompson et al. (2017), these reports help to visualize the metrics used by the Robovetter and evaluate those robotic decisions for individual objects. For each Q1Q17 DR25 TCE, these reports include the following products: (a) the DV one-page summary, (b) selected pertinent diagnostics and plots from the full DV report, and (c) additional plots and diagnostics not included in the full DV report, including an alternate means of data detrending.
