A survey of leeside flow and heat transfer on delta planform configurations

The dominant feature of hypersonic leeside flow fields is the presence of coiled vortices which are generated as the leeside boundary layer responds to the inviscid flow field. Depending on geometric and stream parameters, the vortices can be completely maintained within the boundary layer or can lie outside which is the more familiar case of rolled-up vortices associated with separated flow. Three main areas are covered: (1) fundamental leeside flow phenomena associated with inviscid flows, separation and vortex phenomena involving viscid-inviscid interactions on sharp-edged delta wings and cones; (2) the application of these fundamental concepts to delta-wing bodies such as the space shuttle; and (3) the opportunity and a proposed approach to use early shuttle orbiter entry flights to obtain leeside data.

The effect of delta ray production on Cerenkov counter response

Light generated by delta rays in Cerenkov counters contributes to the mean counter signal in addition to producing fluctuations in this signal. The dependence of this contribution on the energy of the primary particle deviates significantly from the Cerenkov formula. When using such a counter to measure the index of a typical cosmic ray power law spectrum, neglect of this effect can yield a value for the spectral index which is too high by 0.3. This paper presents calculations of this delta ray contribution as a function of the energy of the primary particle. It points out the need for accurate and independent determination of such experimental parameters as counter resolution (intrinsic and statistical), linearity, and normalization.

On high-velocity interstellar gas toward Delta Sco

Independent observations of the Na I D2 line toward Delta Sco are described which show that the two high-velocity absorption components reported by Hicks et al. (1975) are not of normal interstellar origin. A portion of the spectrum of Delta Sco near the D2 line is presented, and it is proposed that the two absorption components may have been of atmospheric origin, although their separation and relative intensities do not suggest any obvious counterparts within the observed telluric spectrum.

Techniques for correcting transmission errors in video adaptive delta modulation channels

We investigated the effects of channel errors on an adaptive delta modulator used to encode video signals. The investigation revealed that channel errors caused a permanent shift in the dc level of the delta modulator's estimate. Errors in the step size, on the other hand, were transitory and had no noticeable effect on the received pictures. We then presented three error correction schemes to minimize the visibility of the channel errors in the received picture. The first scheme required the transmitter to periodically send the correct dc level of the estimate to the receiver. The second method employed a leaky integrator, and the third method used line-to-line interpolation

Quaternary and quinary modifications of the eutectic superalloy gamma/gamma prime-delta

Quaternary modifications and quinary additions from the elements Co, Ti, Mo, W, Re, B, Si, and Ta to the baseline quaternary alloy gamma/gamma prime-delta Ni-19.7 at.% Nb-6.0 at.% Cr-2.5 at.% Al are examined for various concentrations. From modification studies five alloys were chosen for detailed mechanical property characterization: Ni-19.7 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-1.0 W; Ni-19.7 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-1.0 Mo; Ni-18.6 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-0.87 Ti; Ni-20.2 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-2.0 Co; and Ni-17.9 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-3.0 Ta. It is shown that extensive alloying of the baseline quaternary alloy is possible for elements exhibiting a wide solubility range in both phases, and that limited substitution of W, Mo, Re, Si, and B is possible for elements with restricted solid solubility especially in the delta phase. Improvement of creep rupture strength and cyclic oxidation resistance at 1100 C is discussed.

Resistance of a directionally solidified gamma/gamma prime-delta eutectic alloy to recrystallization

A lamellar nickel-base directionally-solidified eutectic gamma/gamma prime-delta alloy has potential as an advanced gas turbine blade material. The microstructural stability of this alloy was investigated. Specimens were plastically deformed by uniform compression or Brinell indentation, then annealed between 750 and 1120 C. Microstructural changes observed after annealing included gamma prime coarsening, pinch-off and spheroidization of delta lamellae, and appearance of an unidentified blocky phase in surface layers. All but the first of these was localized in severely deformed regions, suggesting that microstructural instability may not be a serious problem in the use of this alloy.

Aerodynamic characteristics at Mach 6 of a hypersonic research airplane concept having a 70 deg swept delta wing

The hypersonic aerodynamic characteristics of an air-launched, delta-wing research aircraft concept were investigated at Mach 6. The effect of various components such as nose shape, wing camber, wing location, center vertical tail, wing tip fins, forward delta wing, engine nacelle, and speed brakes was also studied. Tests were conducted with a 0.021 scale model at a Reynolds number, based on model length, of 10.5 million and over an angel of attack range from -4 deg to 20 deg. Results show that most configurations with a center vertical tail have static longitudinal stability at trim, static directional stability at angles of attack up to 12 deg, and static lateral stability throughout the angle of attack range. Configurations with wing tip fins generally have static longitudinal stability at trim, have lateral stability at angles of attack above 8 deg, and are directionally unstable over the angle of attack range.

Diffusion welding of a directionally solidified gamma/gamma prime - delta eutectic alloy

Hot-press diffusion welding parameters were developed for a directionally solidified, gamma/gamma prime-delta eutectic alloy. Based on metallography, a good diffusion weld was achieved at 1100 C under 34.5 MPa (5 ksi) pressure for 1 hour. In addition, a dissimilar metal weld between gamma/gamma prime-delta and IN-100 was successfully made at 1100 C under 20.7 MPa (3 ksi) pressure for 1 hour.

Three level delta modulation

The basic concept of three-level delta modulation (TLDM) is to quantize the error signal of a delta modulator into three levels instead of the usual two levels as in ordinary DM. A TLDM system must be able to transmit three different signals, corresponding to three possible states of the quantizer, whereas the ordinary DM system has to transmit only two signals. The problem of transmitting these signals over a noisy channel is examined, where the input signal is band-limited Gaussian noise. Two parameters that can be adjusted to optimize the performance of the system with respect to quantizing noise are considered: step size and quantizer threshold setting. The effect of additive channel noise on the performance of a TLDM system is assessed in terms of baseband transmission, probability of error, FSK and PSK transmission, transmission bandwidth, and baseband pulse transmission. It is concluded that TLDM can provide a 5 to 6 dB improvement in quantizing signal to noise ratio over ordinary DM for band-limited Gaussian signals. This improvement can be achieved without increasing the channel bandwidth and with an increase in system threshold of less than 2 dB.

Aerodynamic characteristics of a hypersonic research airplane concept having a 70 deg swept double-delta wing at Mach number 0.2

A wind-tunnel of the static longitudinal, lateral and directional stability characteristics of a hypersonic research airplane concept having a 70 deg swept double-delta wing was conducted in the Langley low-turbulence pressure tunnel. The configuration variables included wing planform, tip fins, center fin, and scramjet engine modules. A mach number of 0.2 was investigated over a Reynolds number (based on fuselage length) range of 2,200,000 to 19.75 x 1,000,000 (with a majority of tests at 10.0 x 1,000,000. Tests were conducted through an angle-of-attack range from about -2 deg to 34 deg at angles of sideslip of 0 deg to 5 deg, and at elevon deflection of 0 deg, -5 deg, -10 deg, -15 deg, and -20 deg. The drag coefficient of the integrated scramjet engine appears relatively constant with Reynolds number at the test Mach number of 0.2. Mild pitch-up was exhibited by the models equipped with tip fins. The forward delta, a highly swept forward portion of the wing, was destabilizing. The center fin model has a higher trimmed maximum lift-drag ratio and a wider trim lift and angle-of-attack range than the tip fin model. Both the tip fin models and center fin models exhibited positive dihedral effect and positive directional stability. Roll control was positive for the tip fin model, but yaw due to roll control was unfavorable.

The radii of Uranian rings alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, eta, 4, 5, and 6 from their occultations of SAO 158687

All available timing data for the occultations of SAO 158687 on March 10, 1977, by the cited rings of Uranus are analyzed. Least-squares fits to the data are performed using a model which postulates that rings alpha, beta, gamma, and delta are circular and coplanar. A solution obtained under the assumption that the ring plane coincides with the plane of the satellite orbits is adopted which yields radii of 44,844 km for ring alpha, 45,799 km for ring beta, 47,746 km for ring gamma, and 48,423 km for ring delta. The uncertainties in these values are discussed along with the apparent shapes and inclinations of these main rings. The mean radii estimated for the other rings are: 47,323 km for ring eta, 42,663 km for ring 4, 42,360 km for ring 5, and 41,980 km for ring 6.

The Space Shuttle Ground Terminal Delta Modulation System

Shuttle voice processing uses a Variable Slope Delta Modulation scheme which is a variant of the ABATE algorithm. This paper summarizes the ground terminal subsystem which processes the multiplexed voice and telemetry data digital sequence in the downlink processing and digitizes the voice signal in the uplink processing. The Delta Modulation System (DMS) performance characteristics are given in terms of an intelligibility test score and in terms of time and frequency responses measured on a production system developed for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Implementation details of the encoder and decoder algorithms are given in terms of the circuit logic used to implement them.

The ratio of deuterium to hydrogen in interstellar space. IV - The lines of sight to Delta, Epsilon, and Iota Orionis

Deuterium absorption features in spectra of Delta, Epsilon, and Iota Ori obtained with Copernicus are analyzed. The Iota Ori line-of-sight analysis, which is quite detailed because of the high-velocity H I components superposed on the deuterium features, gives a D/H ratio (which is uncertain because of a complex profile) of 0.000014. A D/H ratio of the order of 7 millionths is determined for Delta and Epsilon Ori. For the complex line profiles involved, one may regard this as a formal lower limit. Several attempts were made to increase the ratio N(D I)/N(H I) in the context of reasonable models for the line of sight, but with no success; the derived values are therefore regarded as actual values, not lower limits. Since the derived value is an average on the line of sight, the possibility cannot be ruled out that the true ratios N(D I)/N(H I) in individual nearby components differ from the mean values. The mean value for these two directions is lower by a factor of 4 than the best value for the Zeta Pup line of sight (the highest yet derived for path lengths greater than 50 pc).

A vortex-lattice method for the calculation of the nonsteady separated flow over delta wings

An analysis is made of the wake structure and the forces on a delta wing as it undergoes nonsteady motion, wherein the flow separates at the leading edge. Comparisons of these predictions with existing experimental and theoretical data for the nonsteady linear and nonlinear motions indicate good agreement. It was found that the time-dependent, wake-shedding numerical procedure applied here for the wake rollup and the lift force calculation resulted in considerable saving of computer time over methods using the iterative wake rollup procedure. Calculated results for various motions of the delta wing, including the plunging motion, are presented for both the separated and the attached flow cases.

Delta V errors due to attitude correction maneuvers of a spinning spacecraft

A statistical error analysis has been performed to evaluate the change in velocity of a spin stabilized spacecraft due to thruster induced attitude correction maneuvers. Analytical expressions were developed to determine the mean and variance of the velocity in terms of the nominal values and uncertainties of key spacecraft parameters. These parameters include thrust, thruster timing, thruster alignment, plume impingement force and estimated spacecraft mass. Typical values of these parameters and their uncertainties for NASA's Galileo spacecraft were used to evaluate these expressions. The results of the analysis allow the effect of attitude correction maneuvers to be evaluated with respect to the functional requirements on nongravitational acceleration. Other results include the identification of major sources of delta V error and studies of the sensitivity of delta V to variations in the error sources.

Atmospheric quenching of vibrationally excited O2/1 Delta/

The paper presents photolysis absorption spectroscopy experimental results which show rapid vibrational quenching of O2(1 Delta, v not less than 1) molecular oxygen fragments in an atmospheric environment. The reactions of this species were determined by flash photolysis of ozone in the Hartley band combined with absorption spectroscopic detection of O2(1 Delta v equals 0) fragments and resonance fluorescence detection of O(3P). It was shown that rapid vibrational deactivation occurs under atmospheric conditions; in addition, an upper limit was determined for the photolytic channel of the O(1D) + O3 yields O2(1 Sigma) reaction.
