Thermal fluctuations and carrier localization induced by dynamic disorder in MAPbI 3 described by first-principles based tight-binding model

Halide perovskites are strongly influenced by large amplitude anharmonic lattice fluctuations at room temperature. We develop a tight binding model for dynamically disordered MAPbI$_3$ based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations to calculate electronic structure for finite temperature crystal structures at the length scale of thermal disorder and carrier localization. The model predicts individual Hamiltonian matrix elements and band structures with high accuracy, owing to the inclusion of additional matrix elements and descriptors for non-Coulombic interactions. We apply this model to electronic structure at length and time scales inaccessible to first principles methods, finding an increase in band gap, carrier mass, and the sub-picosecond fluctuations in these quantities with increasing temperature as well as the onset of carrier localization in large supercells induced by thermal disorder at 300 K. Finally, we identify the length scale $L^*= 5$ nm as the onset of localization in the electronic structure, associated with associated with decreasing band edge fluctuations, increasing carrier mass, and Rashba splitting approaching zero.

Role of structural defects in mediating disordering processes at irradiated epitaxial Fe 3 O 4 / Cr 2 O 3 interfaces

Disordering processes in oxide materials are complicated by the presence of interfaces, which can serve as either point defect sinks or accumulation sites; the response depends on factors such as interfacial structure, chemistry, and termination. Here, we have characterized the disordering of epitaxial Fe 3 O 4 (111) / Cr 2 O 3 (0001) thin film heterostructures after 400 keV Ar 2+ radiation at room temperature. The density of misfit dislocations in both the Fe 3 O 4 overlayer and Cr 2 O 3 buffer layer is varied by changing the thickness of Cr 2 O 3 to be pseudomorphically strained to the Al 2 O 3 (0001) substrate (5 nm thick) or partially relaxed (20 nm thick), as confirmed by Bragg filtering analysis of scanning transmission electron microscopy images. In both cases, irradiation leads to damage accumulation on the Fe 3 O 4 side of the heterointerface, as shown by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry measurements in the channeling geometry. However, the interface with more misfit dislocations exhibits disordering at a faster rate than the less-defective interface. Likewise, layer-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy reveals interfacial reduction of Fe after irradiation at the more defective interface. Intermixing of Cr across the interface is observed by atom probe tomography, which is likely facilitated by the generation of Cr interstitials in Cr 2 O 3 under irradiation.

Correlated anharmonicity and dynamic disorder control carrier transport in halide perovskites

Halide pervoskites are an important class of semiconducting materials that hold great promise for optoelectronic applications. In this work we investigate the relationship between vibrational anharmonicity and dynamic disorder in this class of solids. Via a multiscale model parametrized from first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the non-Gaussian lattice motion in halide perovskites is microscopically connected to the dynamic disorder of overlap fluctuations among electronic states. This connection allows us to rationalize the emergent differences in temperature-dependent mobilities of prototypical MAPbI 3 and MAPbBr 3 compounds across structural phase transitions, in agreement with experimental findings. In conclusion, our analysis suggests that the details of vibrational anharmonicity and dynamic disorder can complement known predictors of electronic conductivity and can provide structure-property guidelines for the tuning of carrier transport characteristics in anharmonic semiconductors.

Anisotropic multiband superconductivity in 2 M − WS 2 probed by controlled disorder

The intrinsically superconducting Dirac semimetal 2 M − WS 2 is a promising candidate for realizing proximity-induced topological superconductivity in its protected surface states. A precise characterization of the bulk superconducting state is essential to understand the nature of surface superconductivity in the system. Here, we report a detailed experimental study of the temperature-dependent London penetration depth, λ ( T ) , the upper critical field, H c 2 ( T ) , and the effects of nonmagnetic disorder on these quantities, as well as on the superconducting transition temperature T c in single crystals of 2 M − WS 2 . We observe a power-law variation of λ ( T ) ∝ T 3 at temperatures below 0.35 T c . Nonmagnetic pointlike disorder induced by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation at various doses results in a significant suppression of T c . These observations are markedly different from expectations for a fully gapped isotropic s − wave superconductor. Together with the substantial increase of slope, d H c 2 / d T | T = T c , with increasing disorder, our results suggest a strongly anisotropic s + + multiband superconducting state. These results have direct consequences for the expected proximity-induced superconductivity of the topological surface states. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Disorder-induced spin-cluster magnetism in a doped kagome spin liquid candidate

The search for new quantum spin liquid materials relies on systems with strong frustration such as spins on an ideal kagome lattice. However, lattice imperfections can have substantial effects which are as yet not well understood. In recent work, the two-dimensional kagome system YCu 3 ⁢(OH) 6 ⁢[(Cl 𝑥 ⁢Br (1−𝑥) ) 3−𝑦 ⁢(OH) 𝑦 ] has emerged as a leading candidate hosting a Dirac spin liquid which appears to survive at least for 𝑥 < 0.4, associated with alternating-bond-hexagon (ABH) disorder. Here in magnetic samples with 𝑥 = 0.58, 𝑦 = 0.1 we report unusual in-plane ferromagnetic canting (FM) of the in-plane antiferromagnet (AFM), with an unusually wide regime of short-ranged order, and propose theoretical models to explain this behavior. First, we show that Kitaev-type exchanges naturally arise on the kagome lattice to second order in the known Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchanges, and that these interactions can produce the unusual in-plane FM canting from antichiral AFM. Second, we propose a phenomenological model of weakly FM-canted spin clusters to describe the short-ranged regime and analyze quantum fluctuations in an ABH toy model to show how ABH disorder can stabilize this regime. Here, the combination of experimental observation and theory suggests that kagome-Kitaev interactions and ABH disorder are necessary for describing the magnetic fluctuations in this family of materials, with potential implications for the proposed proximate spin liquid phase.

Site Disorder as a Predictor for Compositionally Complex 5RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 Ceramic Phase Stability

Here, phase formation and stability of five component compositionally complex rare earth zirconates (5RE 2 Zr 2 O 7 ) were investigated by X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. Zirconates with different rare earth compositions (LaNdSmEuDy, LaNdSmEuYb, LaNdEuErYb, LaNdDyErYb, SmEuDyYHo, LaYHoErYb, and DyYHoErYb) were synthesized at 1700°C and 2000°C by the solid-state method to investigate the effect of A-site site disorder (δ A ) on phase stability. Increased site disorder results from mixed cation occupancy with localized crystallographic strain and bond disorder. Compositions LaNdSmEuDy (δ A = 4.6) and LaNdSmEuYb (δ A = 6.0) produced a single pyrochlore phase and compositions SmDyYHoErYb (δ A = 2.8), LaYHoErYb (δ A = 6.2), and DyYHoErYb (δ A = 1.7) produced a single fluorite phase. High δ A compositions LaNdEuErYb (δ A = 6.9) and LaNdDyErYb (δ A = 7.2) produced a pyrochlore and fluorite phase mixture at 1700°C. Single phase was obtained for the latter composition at 2000°C. Of the single phase compositions calcined at 1700°C, LaNdSmEuYb and LaYHoErYb (both with largest δ A ) showed decomposition to mixed fluorite and pyrochlore phases during lower temperature anneals, indicating entropic stabilization. Comparison with prior work shows a temperature dependence of the critical δ A for phase stability, and compositions near it are expected to be entropy stabilized.

Disordered topological graphs enhancing nonlinear phenomena

Complex networks play a fundamental role in understanding phenomena from the collective behavior of spins, neural networks, and power grids to the spread of diseases. Topological phenomena in such networks have recently been exploited to preserve the response of systems in the presence of disorder. We propose and demonstrate topological structurally disordered systems with a modal structure that enhances nonlinear phenomena in the topological channels by inhibiting the ultrafast leakage of energy from edge modes to bulk modes. We present the construction of the graph and show that its dynamics enhances the topologically protected photon pair generation rate by an order of magnitude. Disordered nonlinear topological graphs will enable advanced quantum interconnects, efficient nonlinear sources, and light-based information processing for artificial intelligence.

Multi-mode THz quantum-cascade VECSELs based on disordered metasurfaces

Quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting-lasers (VECSELs) based on disordered amplifying metasurfaces are demonstrated and explored as potential broadband, multi-mode THz sources. The disorder is introduced along one spatial axis of the metasurface by pseudo-randomly varying the width of its resonant ridge antennas. Compared to a quantum-cascade (QC) VECSEL based on a uniform metasurface, the disordered structure supports much more localized transverse modes with reduced spatial overlap within the QC gain material. This localization is hypothesized to facilitate the spatial hole burning of the gain material and, therefore, enable multi-mode lasing, particularly for short cavities on the order of a few wavelengths. Several devices have been fabricated and shown to differ from uniform QC-VECSELs in a few key ways, possessing highly nonlinear light-current characteristics, angle-dependent emission spectra and broadband multi-mode lasing. At most, 17 modes are simultaneously observed, spanning 680 GHz. The number of VECSEL modes is shown to have an inverse relationship with the cavity length, which is attributed to increased diffractive losses in the open plano-plano cavity. As the cavity length is tuned, the device emits over a quasi-continuous band from 3.15 to 3.97 THz or up to 4.24 THz with a longitudinal mode hop.

Designing order–disorder transformation in high-entropy ferritic steels

Order–disorder transformations hold an essential place in chemically complex high-entropy ferritic steels (HEFSs) due to their critical technological application. The chemical inhomogeneity arising from mixing of multi-principal elements of varying chemistry can drive property altering changes at the atomic scale, in particular short-range order. Using density-functional theory-based linear-response theory, we predict the effect of compositional tuning on the order–disorder transformation in ferritic steels—focusing on Cr–Ni–Al–Ti–Fe HEFSs. We show that Ti content in Cr–Ni–Al–Ti–Fe solid solutions can be tuned to modify short-range order that changes the order–disorder path from BCC-B2 (Ti atomic-fraction = 0) to BCC-B2-L2 1 (Ti atomic-fraction > 0) consistent with existing experiments. Our study suggests that tuning degree of SRO through compositional variation can be used as an effective means to optimize phase selection in technologically useful alloys.

High-Efficiency Solar-To-Fuel Photoelectrochemistry in Disordered Photonic Glass Electrodes (Final Technical Report)

This project investigated how photonic glass (PG) photoelectrodes—disordered arrangements of dielectric scatterers—can serve as scalable, tunable platforms for light trapping in photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar-to-fuel systems. By leveraging disorder-driven optical phenomena such as multiple scattering resonances and light localization, PG structures offer an alternative to conventional photonic crystals and inverse opals that require high structural precision. The scientific goals were to twofold: (1) develop approaches to predictive models for high performance PG electrodes based on light absorption simulations, and (2) fabricate, characterize, and optimize PG-based photoelectrodes for solar-to-hydrogen and solar-to-fuel photoelectrochemical applications. To overcome the complexity of ensemble optical simulations for disordered materials, the researchers developed a machine-learning-accelerated emulation of all configurations in the design space. With this approach, PG photoelectrodes based on a TiO2 semiconductor were designed to enhance PEC currents of up to one hundred times higher than the equivalent ultra-thin film photoanodes and several times higher than the equivalent photonic crystal. The research also explored integrated systems for electrochemical hydrogen production based on replacing water oxidation with the specific glycerol oxidation electrocatalysis. Overall, the project outlined an approach to a simple-to-fabricate photoelectrode system to drive photoelectrochemical reactions relevant to solar photochemical energy conversion.

Reduced Graphene Oxide Aerogels with Functionalization-Mediated Disordered Stacking for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Surface modified reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogels were synthesized using the hydrothermal method. Ethylene diamine (EDA) and α-cyclodextrin (CD) were used to functionalize the surface of the graphene oxide layers. The oxygen reduction and surface modification occurred in-situ during the hydrothermal self-assembly process. The chemical functionality and structure of the resulting ethylene diamine modified (rGO-EDA) and cyclodextrin modified (rGO-CD) aerogels as well as of the pristine unmodified rGO aerogel were studied using XPS, SEM, XRD, and SANS techniques. The overall surface composition showed a significant decrease in the oxygen content for all synthesized aerogels. The surface modified aerogels were characterized by a disordered stacking of the assembled rGO layers. The surface functionalities resulted in a broad distribution of the interlayer spacing and introduced structural heterogeneities. Such disordered structures can enable a better adsorption mechanism of the sodium ions. Coin cells based on the synthesized aerogels and sodium metal were assembled and tested at several charge and discharge rates. The correlation between the surface functionality of the rGO, the induced structural heterogeneities due to the disordered stacking, and the electrochemical performance of sodium-ion batteries were investigated. Operando XRD measurements were carried out during the battery cycling to investigate the adsorption or intercalation nature of the sodiation mechanism.

Verbal Learning and Memory Deficits across Neurological and Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Insights from an ENIGMA Mega Analysis

Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15–90. The effects of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder on immediate, short-, and long-delay verbal learning and memory (VLM) scores were estimated relative to matched healthy individuals. Random forest models identified age, years of education, and site as important VLM covariates. A Bayesian harmonization approach was used to isolate and remove site effects. Regression estimated the adjusted association of each clinical group with VLM scores. Memory deficits were strongly associated with dementia and schizophrenia (p < 0.001), while neither depression nor ADHD showed consistent associations with VLM scores (p > 0.05). Differences associated with clinical conditions were larger for longer delayed recall duration items. By comparing VLM across clinical conditions, this study provides a foundation for enhanced diagnostic precision and offers new insights into disease management of comorbid disorders.

Superfluidity in Disordered Neutron Stars Crusts

Nonequilibrium conditions imposed by neutrino cooling through the liquid-solid transition lead to disorder in the solid crust of neutron stars. Disorder reduces the superfluid fraction, $\rho_s/\rho$, at densities above that of neutron drip, $\rho_d \approx 4\times 10^{11}\,g/cm^3$. For an amorphous solid crust the suppression of $\rho_s$ is small, except in the highest density regions of the crust. In contrast to the strong reduction in neutron conduction predicted for coherent Bragg scattering in a crystalline crust, the disordered solid crust supports sufficient neutron superfluid density to account for pulsar glitches.

Cross‐Cultural Validation of the Binge Eating Disorder Screener‐7 ( BEDS ‐7) Across 42 Countries

ABSTRACT Objective This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Binge Eating Disorder Screener‐7 (BEDS‐7) across 42 countries and 26 languages, assessing its reliability and validity as a screening tool for binge‐eating disorder (BED) in diverse cultural contexts. Specifically, it sought to enhance early recognition of BED symptoms in primary care settings globally, contributing to a standardized framework for assessing BED. Method The International Sex Survey, a cross‐sectional online study, was conducted in 42 countries and 26 languages. A diverse community sample of 82,243 participants, aged 18 years or older, completed the BEDS‐7 and measures of sexuality, mental health, substance use, and sociodemographic characteristics. Confirmatory factor analyses and tests of measurement invariance were employed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the BEDS‐7 across languages, countries, genders, and sexual orientations. Results The BEDS‐7 demonstrated scalar factorial invariance across languages and countries, indicating consistent factor loadings and item intercepts. In contrast, the screener showed residual invariance across gender and sexual orientation groups, supporting its robustness across these demographics. Kruskal–Wallis tests revealed significant differences in BED symptoms across languages, countries, genders, and sexual orientations, with the highest BED scores observed among queer, pansexual, and gender‐diverse individuals. The BEDS‐7 also demonstrated adequate reliability (Cronbach's alpha > 0.80) and moderate criterion validity. Discussion The findings provide further evidence of the reliability and validity of the BEDS‐7 as a potential screening tool for identifying probable cases of BED globally, facilitating early intervention in primary care settings.

Effective and asymptotic criticality of structurally disordered magnets

Changes in magnetic critical behaviour of quenched structurally-disordered magnets are usually exemplified in experiments and in MC simulations by diluted systems consisting of magnetic and non-magnetic components. In our study we aim to show that similar effects can be observed not only for diluted magnets with non-magnetic impurities but may be implemented, e.g., by the presence of two (and more) chemically different magnetic components as well. Therefore we consider a model of the structurally-disordered quenched magnet where all lattice sites are occupied by Ising-like spins of different lengths L. In such a random spin length Ising model, the length L of each spin is a random variable governed by the distribution function p (L). We demonstrate that this model belongs to the universality class of the site-diluted Ising model. This proves that both models are described by the same values of asymptotic critical exponents. However, their effective critical behaviour differs. As a case study, we consider a quenched mixture of two different magnets with values of elementary magnetic moments L 1 = 1 and L 2 = s, and of concentration c and 1 - c, correspondingly. We apply field-theoretical renormalization group approach to analyse the renormalization group flow for different initial conditions, triggered by s and c, and to calculate effective critical exponents further away from the fixed points of the renormalization group transformation. We show how the effective exponents are governed by difference in properties of the magnetic components.

Tackling Disorder in γ‐Ga 2 O 3

Abstract Ga 2 O 3 and its polymorphs are attracting increasing attention. The rich structural space of polymorphic oxide systems such as Ga 2 O 3 offers potential for electronic structure engineering, which is of particular interest for a range of applications, such as power electronics. γ‐Ga 2 O 3 presents a particular challenge across synthesis, characterization, and theory due to its inherent disorder and resulting complex structure–electronic‐structure relationship. Here, density functional theory is used in combination with a machine‐learning approach to screen nearly one million potential structures, thereby developing a robust atomistic model of the γ‐phase. Theoretical results are compared with surface and bulk sensitive soft and hard X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy experiments representative of the occupied and unoccupied states of γ‐Ga 2 O 3 . The first onset of strong absorption at room temperature is found at 5.1 eV from spectroscopic ellipsometry, which agrees well with the excitation maximum at 5.17 eV obtained by photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, where the latter shifts to 5.33 eV at 5 K. This work presents a leap forward in the treatment of complex, disordered oxides and is a crucial step toward exploring how their electronic structure can be understood in terms of local coordination and overall structure.

Over-Stoichiometric Metastabilization of Cation-Disordered Rock Salts

Cation-disordered rock salts (DRXs) are well known for their potential to realize the goal of achieving scalable Ni- and Co-free high-energy-density Li-ion batteries. Unlike in most cathode materials, the disordered cation distribution may lead to more factors that control the electrochemistry of DRXs. An important variable that is not emphasized by research community is regarding whether a DRX exists in a more thermodynamically stable form or a more metastable form. Moreover, within the scope of metastable DRXs, over-stoichiometric DRXs, which allow relaxation of the site balance constraint of a rock salt structure, are particularly underexplored. In this work, these findings are reported in locating a generally applicable approach to “metastabilize” thermodynamically stable Mn-based DRXs to metastable ones by introducing Li over-stoichiometry. Further, the over-stoichiometric metastabilization greatly stimulates more redox activities, enables better reversibility of Li deintercalation/intercalation, and changes the energy storage mechanism. The metastabilized DRXs can be transformed back to the thermodynamically stable form, which also reverts the electrochemical properties, further contrasting the two categories of DRXs. This work enriches the structural and compositional space of DRX families and adds new pathways for rationally tuning the properties of DRX cathodes.

Reduced Energetic Disorders in Dion–Jacobson Perovskites for Efficient and Spectral Stable Blue LEDs

Metal halide perovskites have witnessed great success in green, red, and near-infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs), yet blue LEDs still lag behind. Reducing undesired energetic disorders – broad n -phases and halide segregation – is considered as the most critical strategy to further improve the performances. Here, the study reports a newly designed and synthesized di-ammonium ligand with rigid π -conjugated rings and additional methyl groups to construct Dion–Jacobson (DJ) structure. Augmented coordination from the extra ammonium site and increased effective bulkiness from methyl groups lead to better distribution control over conventional mono-ammonium ligands. This enhances the radiative recombination of blue emissions in the film with homogeneous energy landscape and improved surface morphology, as evidenced by a series of imaging and mapping techniques. As a result, it demonstrates DJ perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) with peak external quantum efficiencies of ≈4% at 484 nm and ≈11% at 494 nm, which are among the top reported for pure DJ phase-based PeLEDs in the corresponding wavelength regions. The results deepen the understanding of regulating energetic disorders in perovskite materials via molecular engineering.
