Inverse FEM for Full-Field Reconstruction of Elastic Deformations in Shear Deformable Plates and Shells

The inverse problem of real-time reconstruction of full-field structural displacements is addressed through the application of a new variational formulation leading to versatile, robust and computationally efficient inverse shell finite element analysis. Utilizing surface strain measurements from strain sensors mounted on the load-carrying structural components, the methodology enables accurate computations of the three-dimensional displacement field. This high fidelity computational technology is essential for providing feedback to the actuation and control systems of the next generation of aerospace vehicles.

Polynomial Expressions for Estimating Elastic Constants From the Resonance of Circular Plates

Two approaches were taken to make convenient spread sheet calculations of elastic constants from resonance data and the tables in ASTM C1259 and E1876: polynomials were fit to the tables; and an automated spread sheet interpolation routine was generated. To compare the approaches, the resonant frequencies of circular plates made of glass, hardened maraging steel, alpha silicon carbide, silicon nitride, tungsten carbide, tape cast NiO-YSZ, and zinc selenide were measured. The elastic constants, as calculated via the polynomials and linear interpolation of the tabular data in ASTM C1259 and E1876, were found comparable for engineering purposes, with the differences typically being less than 0.5 percent. Calculation of additional v values at t/R between 0 and 0.2 would allow better curve fits. This is not necessary for common engineering purposes, however, it might benefit the testing of emerging thin structures such as fuel cell electrolytes, gas conversion membranes, and coatings when Poisson s ratio is less than 0.15 and high precision is needed.

Critical Compressive Stress for Flat Rectangular Plates Supported Along All Edges and Elastically Restrained Against Rotation along the Unloaded Edges

A chart is presented for the values of the coefficient in the formula for the critical compressive stress at which buckling may be expected to occur in flat rectangular plates supported along all edges and, in addition, elastically restrained against rotation along the unloaded edges. The mathematical derivations of the formulas required in the construction of the chart are given.

Transient wave propagation in composite plates due to impact

Stress-wave propagation in a composite plate due to an impact has been examined using anisotropic elasticity theory. The plate is modelled as a number of identical anisotropic layers whose elastic moduli are given. Mindlin's (1959) approximate theory of plates is then applied to each layer to obtain a set of difference-differential equations of motion by using the interlaminar stresses and displacements as explicit variables. Dispersion relationships for harmonic waves are found when traction-free boundary conditions are applied to both surfaces of the plate. The difference-differential equations are reduced to difference equations via integral transforms. With given impact boundary conditions these equations are solved for an arbitrary number of layers in the plate, and the transient propagation of a stress wave is calculated by means of a fast Fourier transform algorithm.

Mechanism of underthrusting in southwest Japan: A model of convergent plate interactions

An elastic rebound mechanism consistent with underthrusting at the time of the magnitude 8.2 Nankaido earthquake of 21 December, 1946 accounts for a reversal in sense between seismic and preseismic changes in elevation throughout a large portion of southwest Japan. It is shown that the seismic movements during the earthquake were generated by slip on a complex thrust fault that is inferred to intersect the surface near the base of the continental slope. The preseismic deformation is explained by strain accumulation equivalent to a virtual dislocation with the same orientation as the fault surface but a sense opposite to that of the real dislocation that occurred at the time of the earthquake. Adjustments by slip along the fault surface and extensions of that surface can account for postseismic movements.

On the strain energy of laminated composite plates

The present effort to obtain the asymptotically correct form of the strain energy in inhomogeneous laminated composite plates proceeds from the geometrically nonlinear elastic theory-based three-dimensional strain energy by decomposing the nonlinear three-dimensional problem into a linear, through-the-thickness analysis and a nonlinear, two-dimensional analysis analyzing plate formation. Attention is given to the case in which each lamina exhibits material symmetry about its middle surface, deriving closed-form analytical expressions for the plate elastic constants and the displacement and strain distributions through the plate's thickness. Despite the simplicity of the plate strain energy's form, there are no restrictions on the magnitudes of displacement and rotation measures.

Elastic Buckling Under Combined Stresses of Flat Plates with Integral Waffle-like Stiffening

Theory and experiment were compared and found in good agreement for the elastic buckling under combined stresses of long flat plates with integral waffle-like stiffening in a variety of configurations. For such flat plates, 45 degree waffle stiffening was found to be the most effective of the configurations for the proportions considered over the widest range of combinations of compression and shear.

Contact stresses in pin-loaded orthotropic plates

The effects of pin elasticity, friction, and clearance on the stresses near the hole in a pin-loaded orthotropic plate are described. The problem is modeled as a contact elasticity problem using complex variable theory, the pin and the plate being two elastic bodies interacting through contact. This modeling is in contrast to previous works which assumed that the pin is rigid or that it exerts a known cosinusoidal radial traction on the hole boundary. Neither of these approaches explicitly involves a pin. A collocation procedure and iteration were used to obtain numerical results for a variety of plate and pin elastic properties and various levels of friction and clearance. Collocation was used to enforce the boundary and iteration was used to find the contact and no-slip regions on the boundary. Details of the numerical scheme are discussed.

Impact on multilayered composite plates

Stress wave propagation in a multilayer composite plate due to impact was examined by means of the anisotropic elasticity theory. The plate was modelled as a number of identical anisotropic layers and the approximate plate theory of Mindlin was then applied to each layer to obtain a set of difference-differential equations of motion. Dispersion relations for harmonic waves and correction factors were found. The governing equations were reduced to difference equations via integral transforms. With given impact boundary conditions these equations were solved for an arbitrary number of layers in the plate and the transient propagation of waves was calculated by means of a Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. The multilayered plate problem was extended to examine the effect of damping layers present between two elastic layers. A reduction of the interlaminar normal stress was significant when the thickness of damping layer was increased but the effect was mostly due to the softness of the damping layer. Finally, the problem of a composite plate with a crack on the interlaminar boundary was formulated.

Elastic and plastic buckling of simply supported solid-core sandwich plates in compression

A solution is presented for the problem of the compressive buckling of simply supported, flat, rectangular, solid-core sandwich plates stressed either in the elastic range or in the plastic range. Charts for the analysis of long sandwich plates are presented for plates having face materials of 24s-t3 aluminum alloy, 76s-t6 alclad aluminum alloy, and stainless steel. A comparison of computed and experimental buckling stresses of square solid-core sandwich plates indicates fair agreement between theory and experiment.

Stresses around holes in pin-loaded orthotropic plates

The effects of pin elasticity, pin/hole friction, and pin/hole clearance on the stresses around a hole in a pin-loaded orthotropic plate were studied. The problem was modeled as a planar problem, the pin and plate being two elastic bodies interacting through contact. Complex variable elasticity, a collocation scheme to enforce the pin/hole boundary conditions, and an iteration procedure to find the contact, slip, and no-slip regions were used to obtain numerical results. The results indicate that pin elasticity is not as important a variable as friction and clearance are. A rigid pin assumption, as opposed to the popular cosinusoidal radial traction, can be used without much error but clearance and friction should not be ignored.

Propagation and scattering of elastic waves in fiber-reinforced plates

The objectives of this program are as follows: modelling of guided waves in fiber-reinforced plates in terms of different modes; and analysis of scattering by transverse cracks using modal representation. A hybrid numerical method combining the finite element representation of a region around the crack with the modal representation in the exterior region will be used in this program. Modes will be obtained using the through-the-thickness discretization of the displacement field.
