Nuclear Thermal Propulsion for Advanced Space Exploration

The fundamental capability of Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) is game changing for space exploration. A first generation Nuclear Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (NCPS) based on NTP could provide high thrust at a specific impulse above 900 s, roughly double that of state of the art chemical engines. Characteristics of fission and NTP indicate that useful first generation systems will provide a foundation for future systems with extremely high performance. The role of the NCPS in the development of advanced nuclear propulsion systems could be analogous to the role of the DC-3 in the development of advanced aviation. Progress made under the NCPS project could help enable both advanced NTP and advanced Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP).

Development of a multikilowatt ion thruster power processor

A feasibility study was made of the application of silicon-controlled, rectifier series, resonant inverter, power conditioning technology to electric propulsion power processing operating from a 200 to 400 Vdc solar array bus. A power system block diagram was generated to meet the electrical requirements of a 20 CM hollow cathode, mercury bombardment, ion engine. The SCR series resonant inverter was developed as a primary means of power switching and conversion, and the analog signal-to-discrete-time-interval converter control system was applied to achieve good regulation. A complete breadboard was designed, fabricated, and tested with a resistive load bank, and critical power processor areas relating to efficiency, weight, and part count were identified.

The measurement and facilitation of cooperative task performance

Experiments were conducted to determine under what conditions jaw clenching will occur in humans as a response to stress exposure. The method for measuring reactions to stress involves a series of electrical recordings of the masseter and temporalis muscles. A high fixed-ratio response requirement in the first series of experiments shows that jaw clenching in humans occurs in situations analogous to those which produce biting in infrahuman subjects. In the second series, reduction in the amounts of money recieved by subjects is shown to cause increases in the jaw clench response and other negative effect motor behaviors. The third series demonstrates that perception of more favorable conditions existing for another person can increase anger and hostility in the subject.

The Pinhole/Occulter Facility

Scientific objectives and requirements are discussed for solar X-ray observations, coronagraph observations, studies of coronal particle acceleration, and cosmic X-ray observations. Improved sensitivity and resolution can be provided for these studies using the pinhole/occulter facility which consists of a self-deployed boom of 50 m length separating an occulter plane from a detector plane. The X-ray detectors and coronagraphic optics mounted on the detector plane are analogous to the focal plane instrumentation of an ordinary telescope except that they use the occulter only for providing a shadow pattern. The occulter plane is passive and has no electrical interface with the rest of the facility.

Low-Thrust Trajectory Maps (Bacon Plots) to Support a Human Mars Surface Expedition

Planning the logistics of multiple launches to support a Mars surface expedition requires good trajectory design tools. Traditional ballistic transfers are well characterized by performance maps known as pork-chop plots. However, the transportation of cargo can benefit from the use of low-thrust solar electric propulsion, both in terms of mass delivered and the flexibility of flight durations and dates. This paper describes the design and use of bacon plots (the low-thrust analog to pork-chop plots) and their application to the architectural design of a human Mars surface expedition.

Investigation of Venus Surface Properties

Strong localized radar echoes have been observed at decimeter wavelengths from the highlands of Venus since the earliest radar maps were obtained over 30 years ago. These echoes are some five to ten times stronger than those from the presumably basaltic rocks seen at lower altitudes elsewhere on Venus. Observations of thermal emission from the visible disk of Venus at wavelengths corresponding to those used in the radar mapping confirm that the regions of high reflectivity also exhibit low emissivity, as expected from considerations of detailed thermodynamic balance. Two possibilities have been put forward to explain this unexpected aspect of the Venus highlands: 1) surface materials of high effective dielectric constant, probably associated with finite electrical conductivity, and 2) volume scattering associated with multiple scattering from a layer of very-low-loss material containing voids and extending down a few hundred wavelengths beneath the surface. Analogs to these two mechanisms are found elsewhere in the solar system, and each is capable of explaining the basic observations. as of the early 1990's. In 1993, however, it became possible to carry out a bistatic observation of the anomalous highland regions using the Magellan spacecraft, then in orbit about Venus. In this experiment the on-board telemetry transmitter was aimed at the planet's surface with its linear S-band polarization vector oriented at 45 deg to the spacecraft-Venus-Earth scattering plane. The pointing of the transmitting antenna was adjusted so that the spacecraft-to-illuminated-surface incidence angle equalled the Earth-to-Venus-surface incidence angle. In this way, the experiment emphasized the specular scattering component. A full Stokes-Vector analysis of the reflected signal as received on Earth was carried out as the illuminated region scanned across the highland regions of Venus. From the observed position angle of the echo, it was possible to calculate the Fresnel reflectivity of a number of regions on Venus, including the high-altitude Maxwell Montes, and to show unequivocally that the complex dielectric constant of that anomalous area was 100 +/- 50i, as compared to 4.0 (real) for the typical lowland area. Thus this experiment was able to rule out definitively an hypothesis of volume scattering as the explanation for the anomalous scattering in the Venus highlands.

Comparisons of Selected Atmospheric Escape Mechanisms on Venus, Mars and Titan

The similarities and differences of the escape mechanisms for H+ and D+ from Venus, H+ and D+ from Mars, and heavier ions (approximately 17 and approximately 28 amu) from Titan are described. The dominant escape process for hydrogen and deuterium on Venus is thought to originate in the night side ionosphere, located in the night side H and D bulge region, where the polarization electric field is the dominant force accelerating ionospheric H+ and D+ upward into the induced magnetic tail of Titan. The resulting loss rates approximately 8.6 x 10(exp26)/s and approximately 3.2 x 10(exp 23)/s for H+ and D+, respectively, are consistent with the large observed D/H ratio - 160 times that of terrestrial water and an ancient ocean more than 10 m of liquid uniformly distributed on the surface. In contrast, Jeans escape is the dominant loss mechanism for H and D on Mars, which has a D/H ratio approximately 5.3 times that of terrestrial water. The resulting loss rates for H and D of approximately 3.7 x 10(exp 26/s and approximately 10(exp 22)/s, respectively, can be related to possible ancient water reservoirs below the surface. When horizontal atmospheric winds are taken into account, the Jeans escape rates for H and D are enhanced considerably, as are the corresponding water reservoirs. On Titan, 28 amu ions were observed to escape along its induced magnetic tail by the Voyager 1 Plasma Science Instrument (PLS). In analogy with Venus, the escaping ions were thought to originate in the ionosphere. The Cassini mission permits a test of this principle due to the numerous flybys of Titan through both the ionosphere and the tail. A polarization electric field is obtained in the ionosphere of the TA flyby, yielding an upward acceleration of 17 and 28 amu ionospheric ions that is consistent with the flux of heavy ionospheric ions observed escaping along the magnetic tail by the Cassini Ion Mass Spectrometer (CAPS) during the T9 flyby.

Fluid Flow Nozzle Energy Harvesters

Power generation schemes that could be used downhole in an oil well to produce about 1 Watt average power with long-life (decades) are actively being developed. A variety of proposed energy harvesting schemes could be used to extract energy from this environment but each of these has their own limitations that limit their practical use. Since vibrating piezoelectric structures are solid state and can be driven below their fatigue limit, harvesters based on these structures are capable of operating for very long lifetimes (decades); thereby, possibly overcoming a principle limitation of existing technology based on rotating turbo-machinery. An initial survey identified that spline nozzle configurations can be used to excite a vibrating piezoelectric structure in such a way as to convert the abundant flow energy into useful amounts of electrical power. This paper presents current flow energy harvesting designs and experimental results of specific spline nozzle/ bimorph design configurations which have generated suitable power per nozzle at or above well production analogous flow rates. Theoretical models for non-dimensional analysis and constitutive electromechanical model are also presented in this paper to optimize the flow harvesting system.

Advanced dc motor controller for battery-powered electric vehicles

A motor generation set is connected to run from the dc source and generate a voltage in the traction motor armature circuit that normally opposes the source voltage. The functional feasibility of the concept is demonstrated with tests on a Proof of Principle System. An analog computer simulation is developed, validated with the results of the tests, applied to predict the performance of a full scale Functional Model dc Controller. The results indicate high efficiencies over wide operating ranges and exceptional recovery of regenerated energy. The new machine integrates both motor and generator on a single two bearing shaft. The control strategy produces a controlled bidirectional plus or minus 48 volts dc output from the generator permitting full control of a 96 volt dc traction motor from a 48 volt battery, was designed to control a 20 hp traction motor. The controller weighs 63.5 kg (140 lb.) and has a peak efficiency of 90% in random driving modes and 96% during the SAE J 227a/D driving cycle.
