Magnetospheric-ionospheric Poynting flux

Over the past three years of funding SRI, in collaboration with the University of Texas at Dallas, has been involved in determining the total electromagnetic energy flux into the upper atmosphere from DE-B electric and magnetic field measurements and modeling the electromagnetic energy flux at high latitudes, taking into account the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. This effort has been very successful in establishing the DC Poynting flux as a fundamental quantity in describing the coupling of electromagnetic energy between the magnetosphere and ionosphere. The DE-B satellite electric and magnetic field measurements were carefully scrutinized to provide, for the first time, a large data set of DC, field-aligned, Poynting flux measurement. Investigations describing the field-aligned Poynting flux observations from DE-B orbits under specific geomagnetic conditions and from many orbits were conducted to provide a statistical average of the Poynting flux distribution over the polar cap. The theoretical modeling effort has provided insight into the observations by formulating the connection between Poynting's theorem and the electromagnetic energy conversion processes that occur in the ionosphere. Modeling and evaluation of these processes has helped interpret the satellite observations of the DC Poynting flux and improved our understanding of the coupling between the ionosphere and magnetosphere.

The BigBite Calorimeter for the Super Bigbite Spectrometer Program at Jefferson Lab

Here, we report features of the design, construction, installation, and performance of the BigBite Calorimeter (BBCal), a lead-glass electromagnetic calorimeter constructed as part of the BigBite Spectrometer (BBS), which served as the electron arm for the Super Bigbite Spectrometer (SBS) program of high-precision neutron electromagnetic form factor measurements in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. As a total-absorption calorimeter, BBCal provided the primary electron trigger for BBS, detecting quasi-elastically scattered electrons in the 1–4 GeV energy range with an energy resolution of approximately 6.2%, position resolution of 1.2 cm, and timing resolution of 0.5 ns.

Error field identification through torque balance on a saturated island in DIII-D

Measurement of the electromagnetic torque on a magnetic island could be an attractive method for error field identification in the early phase of ITER operation. Previous DIII-D experiments (Strait 2014 Nucl. Fusion 54 073004; Shiraki et al 2015 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 57 025016) have demonstrated the principle of this approach using a stationary or slowly rotating island, while recent developments in magnetic data analysis (Sweeney and Strait 2019 Phys. Plasmas 26 012509) allow the field of a rapidly rotating island to be readily distinguished from that of the wall currents induced by its rotation. In a recent experiment, a rotating n = 1 magnetic perturbation forced a saturated magnetic island to rotate, thus sampling all toroidal phases periodically in a single discharge. The phase and amplitude of the error field are inferred from analysis of the time-dependent torque balance on the island, including torques from the error field, the applied magnetic perturbation, and the wall currents induced by rotation of the applied perturbation and the island. Furthermore, results agree well with those from more conventional methods.

Theoretical frameworks for testing relativistic gravity: A review

Metric theories of gravity are presented, including the definition of metric theory, evidence for its existence, and response of matter to gravity with test body trajectories, gravitational red shift, and stressed matter responses. Parametrized post-Newtonian framework and interpretations are reviewed. Gamma, beta and gamma, and varied other parameters were measured. Deflection of electromagnetic waves, radar time delay, geodetic gyroscope precession, perihelion shifts, and periodic effects in orbits are among various studies carried out for metric theory experimentation.

Electric propulsion interactive effects with spacecraft science payloads.

Interactive effects between electric thruster units and a Solar Electric Pioneer (SEP) spacecraft science payload are investigated. Studied effects include magnetic contamination (steady state), electric contamination (steady state and time varying) and particle contamination of regions in and around the spacecraft. Conducted electromagnetic interference is measured for thrusters powered with prototype power processing units and radio frequency interference effects between the thruster and the omnidirectional low gain antenna are determined. Material deposition and transport of thruster propellant ions and atoms and charge exchange metal ions and atoms are also experimentally determined. Large scale environmental effects between the plasma thrust beam and the particles and fields in interplanetary space are discussed. Contaminant reduction techniques are proposed, and both laboratory and in-space interactive effects tests are suggested.

A Shuttle/SpaceLab RF environment survey facility

This paper describes some of the basic system considerations of a proposed experiment for monitoring and measuring the global electromagnetic radiation environment. RF spectrum coverage for this spaceborne survey facility is anticipated to be quite broad and will include selected frequency bands ranging from UHF to millimeter waves. By establishing this RF environment survey facility, a broad data base of useful electromagnetic field intensity information will be developed. This, in turn, should help both the regulatory agencies and user community in terms of future frequency planning and system design by avoiding unwarranted interference. It is proposed that this experiment be flown as a future test bed during the Shuttle/Spacelab era for continuously gathering and updating information on earth-emitted electromagnetic emissions on a global scale.

Localization of non-stationary sources of electromagnetic radiation with the aid of phasometry

The possibility of localizing sources of electromagnetic radiation by measurement of the time of passage of the radiation or the measurement of its phase at various points of cosmic space, at which are located satellite observatories is examined. Algorithms are proposed for localization using two, three, and four astronomical observatories. The precision of the localization and several partial results of practical significance are deduced.

Expanded interleaved solid-state memory for a wide bandwidth transient waveform recorder

An interleaved, solid state expanded memory for a 100 MHz bandwidth waveform recorder is described. The memory development resulted in a significant increase in the storage capacity of a commercially available recorder. The motivation for the memory expansion of the waveform recorder, which is used to support in-flight measurement of the electromagnetic characteristics of lightning discharges, was the need for a significantly longer data window than that provided by the commercially available unit. The expanded recorder provides a data window that is 128 times longer than the commercial unit, while maintaining the same time resolution, by increasing the storage capacity from 1024 to 131 072 data samples. The expanded unit operates at sample periods as small as 10 ns. Sampling once every 10 ns, the commercial unit records for about 10 microseconds before the memory is filled, whereas, the expanded unit records for about 1300 microseconds. A photo of the expanded waveform recorder is shown.

Characteristics of RF resulting from dielectric discharges

This paper presents measurements of the electromagnetic radiation pulses and the replacement current pulses which result from the breakdown of Mylar and Kapton samples. The observed dependence of the characteristics of the replacement current pulse as a function of electron beam energy is discussed. The characteristics of the electromagnetic radiation pulses are also analyzed in the text of this paper. The source of the irradiating electrons is a monoenergetic electron beam whose energy was varied from 12.5 KeV to 25 KeV.

Optimization technique for improved microwave transmission from multi-solar power satellites

An optimization technique for generating antenna illumination tapers allows improved microwave transmission efficiencies from proposed solar power satellite (SPS) systems and minimizes sidelobe levels to meet preset environmental standards. The cumulative microwave power density levels from 50 optimized SPS systems are calculated at the centroids of each of the 3073 counties in the continental United States. These cumulative levels are compared with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) measured levels of electromagnetic radiation in seven eastern cities. Effects of rectenna relocations upon the power levels/population exposure rates are also studied.

High vacuum facility for hydrazine thruster testing

An ongoing modification is described of a large vacuum chamber to accommodate the ignition of an arcjet hydrazine thruster while maintaining a vacuum level of 1 x 10(exp -5) torr or less. The vacuum facility consists of a 20 ft stainless steel vacuum tank with an internal LN2 shroud, four 35 in. cryopumps and an 8 in. turbopump. To maintain a vacuum level of 1 x 10(exp -5) torr or less, 900 sq ft of liquid helium (LHe) shroud surface was installed to maintain the vacuum level and pumping requirements. A vacuum level of 1 x 10(exp -5) torr or less will allow the hydrazine thrust to exit the thruster nozzle and radiate into a space type environment so that the plume flow field can be analyzed and compared to the analytical model density distribution profile. Some other arcjet thruster characteristics measured are the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and exhaust contamination. This data is used to evaluate if the arcjet thruster with its high specific impulse in comparison to current chemical propulsion thruster can be used for the next generation of communication satellites.

Single element magnetic suspension actuator

The invention, a single element magnetic suspension actuator with bidirectional force capability along a single axis, includes an electromagnet and a nonmagnetic suspended element. A permanent magnet mounted on the suspended element interacts with a magnetic field established by the electromagnet to produce bidirectional forces in response to a variable force command voltage V (sub FC) applied to the electromagnet. A sensor measures the position of the suspended element on the single axis which is a function of force command voltage V (sub FC).
