An Eccentric Debris Ring Around the Nearby G Star HD 202628

A new debris disk has been imaged in visible light around the G2V star HD 202628 using the STIS coronagraph on the Hubble Space Telescope. The broad ring is inclined 61 deg from face-on and extends as far as 260 AU from the star. The star is noticeably displaced from the apparent ring center by 20 AU. The ring inner edge is sharp and well-described by an inclined ellipse with a= 158 AU, e= 0.18, and the star at one focus. These properties are similar to the Fomalhaut debris ring and likewise suggest ring sculpting by a planetary-mass companion with semi-major axis approx.> 100 AU. The presence of a planet so widely separated from a solar-type star poses a new challenge for planet formation theories.

Spin-orbit Resonance and Stability in Eccentric, Low Altitude Mars Orbits

Low altitude orbit perturbations derive from mass concentrations and show high sensitivity to spin-orbit resonance conditions and initial configuration relative to the central body. Here we focus on low, polar, non-circular orbits of Mars. The method uses analytical derivations to identify regimes of interest and computational modeling and graphical design aids for detailed investigation. Evaluation of spin-orbit resonance and gravity perturbation effects are important in mission design applications. The obtained results indicate the presence of unstable regions to avoid for potential future Mars orbiters.

Examination of Spin-Orbit Resonance in Eccentric and Low Altitude Mars Orbits

Low orbit perturbations derive from mass concentrations and show high sensitivity to certain initial orbit parameters and spin-orbit resonance con-ditions. Comets: Very Eccentric Characters!

Comets occasionally appear in our night skies. We see them as bright or faint fuzzy balls of light, with one or two long tails streaming out. They look nothing like the stars, the moon, or any other object we see in the sky. That is because they really are quite different!
