Surface Temperature Effect on Convective Heat Transfer Coefficients for Jet Impingement Cooling of Electric Machines with Automatic Transmission Fluid: Preprint

In this study, the results of NREL's continued work on experimental characterization of the thermal performance of free-surface jets of automatic transmission fluid impinged on a heated target surface are presented. The measured heat transfer coefficients are useful for understanding factors influencing performance of driveline fluid-based cooling systems for electric machines and help designers in developing high-performance, power-dense and reliable machines. Experiments were carried out for different fluid and target surface temperatures (50 degrees C, 70 degrees C, and 90 degrees C for the fluid and 90 degrees C, 100 degrees C, 110 degrees C, and 120 degrees C for the target surface). Impinging jet velocities (0.5 m/s to 7.5 m/s) and the jet position on the target surface (center versus edge) were also varied. The impinging angle was kept at 90 degrees relative to the target surface. It was found that higher target surface temperature increased heat transfer coefficients, namely, increasing surface temperature from 90 degrees C to 120 degrees C enhanced heat transfer coefficient values at higher impinged jet velocities (7.5 m/s) by up to 15%.

Combined Dimensional and Topology Optimization of Synchronous Machine Rotors Using a Material Density Interpolation Method

This article presents a magneto-structural combined dimensional and topology optimization technique for interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) and wound field synchronous machine (WFSM) rotors. Dimensional changes to the permanent magnet (PM) and rotor winding location or size are accomplished by interpolating or projecting a smoothed Heaviside rectangular function representing the presence of PM material onto the IPMSM rotor design domain mesh, whereas the presence of copper material for WFSM rotor is interpolated in the same manner. A density based Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) topology optimization approach is then used to vary the presence of electrical steel in mesh elements to form flux barriers around the PM. The proposed method enforces a defined shape for the PM without requiring the mesh in the design domain to be deformed. Four examples are presented to demonstrate the technique: Two flat bar IPMSM, one V-shaped IPMSM, and a WFSM. Here, a comparative study is performed on one of the flat bar IPMSMs using Metamodel of Optimal Prognosis (MOP) based method.

Cast or Additively Manufactured Coils with End Turn Enhanced Heat Transfer Surfaces for Spray or Jet Cooling

Cast or additively manufactured coils present a new opportunity for creativity in thermal management of electric machines. Improvements to the heat transfer of spray or jet cooling of coil end turns through the incorporation of pins or enhanced heat transfer surfaces in the cast end turn surfaces is explored. The thermal response of cast copper half-turns is measured for a range of spray/jet volumetric flow rates and ohmic loss heat fluxes. A significant reduction, ~30%, in the steady state temperature and increased spray cooling heat transfer coefficients was experimentally measured when the pins or enhanced heat transfer surfaces are incorporated.

Systemwide Considerations for Electrification of Transportation in Islands and Remote Locations

Electric vehicles (EVs) represent an important socio-economic development opportunity for islands and remote locations because they can lead to reduced fuel imports, electricity storage, grid services, and environmental and health benefits. This paper presents an overview of opportunities, challenges, and examples of EVs in islands and remote power systems, and is meant to provide background to researchers, utilities, energy offices, and other stakeholders interested in the impacts of electrification of transportation. The impact of uncontrolled EV charging on the electric grid operation is discussed, as well as several mitigation strategies. Of particular importance in many islands and remote systems is taking advantage of local resources by combining renewable energy and EV charging. Policy and economic issues are presented, with emphasis on the need for an overarching energy policy to guide the strategies for EVs growth. The key conclusion of this paper is that an orderly transition to EVs, one that maximizes benefits while addressing the challenges, requires careful analysis and comprehensive planning.

Quantifying Time to Charge

This work presents analysis aimed at quantifying and improving the time between the start of an electric vehicle (EV) charging session and the start of actual energy transfer. This is achieved by analyzing EV charge session communication logs. The data from these logs are used to identify the longest-duration phases within charge initialization. Paths for future work are presented with a focus on the areas most likely to deliver overall time-to-charge improvements.

The Triple Effect: Unraveling the Joint Impact of Electric Vehicles, Solar Panels, and Work-From-Home Patterns on Household Electricity Costs

Solutions for deep decarbonization need to be sustainable as well as affordable to garner widespread adoption. The past two decades have seen the introduction of new technologies and paradigms such as electric vehicles (EVs), solar photovoltaics (PVs), and increased work-from-home (WFH), which impact the overall energy consumption and cost of a household in different ways. However, much attention has not been paid to explore the joint impact these technologies have on a household's energy (electricity cost) burden. Leveraging Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS), this study presents an integrated model to unravel the extent to which the bundled adoption of EV-PV and stay-at-home decisions impact the total electricity cost of households. RECS data revealed that, compared to the baseline (i.e., households that did not own any of these technologies), households that own EVs, PVs, and engage in WFH observed a 13.5% decline in their electricity bills, despite a 25% increase in electricity consumption. The model results indicated that bundled adoption of EVs-PVs reduces electricity costs more significantly for a household, compared to the increased costs imposed by more household members staying at home. This holistic assessment presents an opportunity for decision makers to contextualize the changing energy costs and design effective strategies to foster a sustainable and affordable future. Policies such as bundled incentivization to motivate co-adoption, education about energy-management strategies, and add-on subsidies to adopt energy-efficient appliances, will not only accelerate decarbonization but increase household financial savings.

Large-scale scenarios of electric vehicle charging with a data-driven model of control

Transportation electrification is forecast to bring millions of new electric vehicles to roads worldwide this decade. Planning to support those vehicles depends on detailed scenarios of their electricity demand in both uncontrolled and controlled or smart charging scenarios. In this work, we present a novel modeling approach to enable rapid generation of demand estimates that represent the impact of controlled charging for large-scale scenarios with millions of individual drivers. To model the effect of load modulation control on aggregate charging profiles, we propose a novel machine learning approach that replaces traditional optimization approaches. We demonstrate its performance modeling workplace charging control under a range of electricity rate schedules, achieving small errors (2.5%–4.5%) while accelerating computations by more than 4000 times. To generate the uncontrolled charging demand for scenarios with residential, workplace, and public charging we use statistical representations of a large data set of real charging sessions. We demonstrate the methodology by generating diverse sets of scenarios for California's charging demand in 2030 which consider multiple charging segments and controls, each run locally in under 50 s. We further demonstrate support for rate design by modeling the large-scale impact of a new, custom rate schedule for workplace charging.

A Review of the Customer Experience at Public Charging Stations and its Effects on Electric Vehicle Purchase and Use

The electric vehicle (EV) market in the U.S. has grown rapidly. However, poor public charging reliability could challenge achieving widespread adoption. We reviewed peer-reviewed articles and market research reports to understand how the public charging experience affects the willingness to purchase EVs among first-time buyers and current owners. Ample literature identifies the measures of the public charging experiences, characterizes the current public charging experience, and identifies the effect of infrastructure availability on EV purchase decisions. However, there is no causal evidence linking the customer experience at public chargers to purchase decisions or intentions for current EV owners or prospective buyers.
