Pressure-driven valence increase and metallization in the Kondo insulator Ce 3 Bi 4 Pt 3

We report the results of high-pressure x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, and electrical transport measurements of the Kondo insulator (KI) Ce 3 Bi 4 Pt 3 up to 42 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the study of any Ce-based KI. Here, we observe a smooth decrease in volume and movement toward intermediate Ce valence with pressure, both of which point to increased electron correlations. Despite this, temperature-dependent resistance data show the suppression of the interaction-driven ambient pressure insulating ground state. We also discuss potential ramifications of these results for the predicted topological KI state.

Pressure tuning of the charge density wave and superconductivity in 2 H -TaS 2

Both the vibrational and electrical transport properties of 2 H -TaS 2 have been investigated at high pressures and low temperatures. In this work, the collapse of the charge-density-wave order at pressures above 7.3 GPa has been verified by Raman scattering, resistivity, and Hall coefficient measurements. For pressures above the critical pressure of 7.3 GPa, the superconducting transition temperature continues to increase and reaches its maximum value at 11.5 GPa, suggesting that it is not a simple competition between the charge-density-wave order and superconductivity. Through the standard resistivity fit in the normal state, the decline of the superconducting transition temperature with increasing pressure up to 47.0 GPa is due to the decrease of interaction strength and the increase of the impurity scattering. These results are very important in understanding the superconducting mechanism of transition-metal dichalcogenides.

Pressure-induced suppression of ferromagnetism in the itinerant ferromagnet LaCrSb 3

We have performed an extensive pressure-dependent structural, spectroscopic, and electrical transport study of LaCrSb 3 . The ferromagnetic phase (TC=120 K at p = 0 GPa) is fully suppressed by p = 26.5 GPa and the Cr moment decreases steadily with increasing pressure. The unit-cell volume decreases smoothly up to p = 55 GPa. We find that the bulk modulus and suppression of the magnetism are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, but the Cr moment decreases smoothly with pressure, in contrast to steplike drops predicted by theory. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature appears to be driven by the Cr moment.

Structural, magnetic, and electronic evolution of the spin-ladder system BaFe 2 S 3-x Se x with isoelectronic substitution

We reWe report experimental studies of a series of BaF e 2 S 3 - x Se x ( 0 ≤ $x$ ≤ 3 ) single crystals and powder specimens using x-ray diffraction, neutron-diffraction, muon-spin-relaxation, and electrical transport measurements. A structural transformation from $C$ $mcm$ ( BaFe 2 Se 3 ) to $P$ $nma$ ( BaFe 2 Se 3 ) was identified around $x$ = 0.7 - 1 . Neutron-diffraction measurements on the samples with $x$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7 reveal that the Néel temperature of the stripe antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed from ~120 to 85 K, while the magnitude of the ordered Fe 2+ moments shows very little variation. Similarly, the block antiferromagnetic order in BaFe 2 Se 3 remains robust for 1.5 ≤ $x$ ≤ 3 with negligible variation in the ordered moment and a slight decrease of the Néel temperature from 250 K ( $x$ = 3 ) to 225 K ( $x$ = 1.5 ). The sample with $x$ = 1 near the $C$ $mcm$ and $P$ $nma$ border shows coexisting, two-dimensional, short-range stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations. The system remains insulating for all $x$ , but the thermal activation gap shows an abrupt increase when traversing the boundary from the $C$ $mcm$ stripe phase to the $P$ $nma$ block phase. The results demonstrate that the crystal structure, magnetic order, and electronic properties are strongly coupled in the BaFe 2 S 3-x Se x system.

Tuning of charge density wave transitions in LaAu x Sb 2 by pressure and Au stoichiometry

Two charge density wave transition can be detected in La Au Sb 2 at ~ 110 and ~ 90 K by careful electrical transport measurements. Whereas control of the Au site occupancy in La Au x Sb 2 (for 0.9 ≲ x ≲ 1.0 ) can suppress each of these transitions by ~ 80 K , the application of hydrostatic pressure can completely suppress the lower transition by ~ 7.5 kbar and the upper transition by ~ 17 kbar . Here, clear anomalies in the resistance as well as the magnetoresistance are observed to coincide with the pressures at which the charge density wave transitions are driven to zero.

Theory of oblique-field magnetoresistance from spin centers in three-terminal spintronic devices

Here, we present a general stochastic Liouville theory of electrical transport across a barrier between two conductors that occurs via sequential hopping through a single defect's spin-0 to spin-1/2 transition. We find magnetoconductances similar to Hanle features (pseudo Hanle features) that originate from Pauli blocking without spin accumulation, and also predict that evolution of the defect's spin modifies the conventional Hanle response, producing an inverted Hanle signal from spin center evolution. We propose studies in oblique magnetic fields that would unambiguously determine if a magnetoconductance results from spin-center assisted transport.

Magnetic phase transition, magnetoresistance, and anomalous Hall effect in Ga-substituted Y Mn 6 Sn 6 with a ferromagnetic kagome lattice

The HfFe 6 Ge 6- type RMn 6 Sn 6 , a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic kagome planes of Mn, has been recently shown to be a candidate hosting topological electronic properties. In this paper, we report magnetic and electronic properties in Y Mn 6 Sn 6-x Ga x single crystals via magnetic susceptibility, electrical transport, and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. We show that the magnetic ground state of Y Mn 6 Sn 6-x Ga x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.61 ) evolves from incommensurate antiferromagnet to ferromagnet with increasing Ga substitution x, a feature which is accompanied by the decrease in magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the topological Hall effect observed in the pristine compound is absent in the Ga-substituted ones; instead, the anomalous Hall effect persists which may be associated with the Berry curvature of gapped Dirac bands near the Fermi energy. These results suggest strong correlation between electronic properties and magnetism in this topological magnet that can be readily tuned via Ga substitution.

Magnetic dilution effect and topological phase transitions in (Mn 1- x Pb x )Bi 2 Te 4

We report, as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator, MnBi 2 Te 4 has provided a material platform to realize various emergent phenomena arising from the interplay of magnetism and band topology. Here, by investigating (Mn 1-x Pb x )Bi 2 Te 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.82) single crystals via the x-ray, electrical transport, magnetometry and neutron measurements, chemical analysis, external pressure, and first-principles calculations, we reveal the magnetic dilution effect on the magnetism and band topology in MnBi 2 Te 4 . With increasing x, both lattice parameters a and c expand linearly by around 2%. All samples undergo the paramagnetic to A-type antiferromagnetic transition with the Néel temperature decreasing lineally from 24 K at x = 0 to 2 K at x = 0.82. Our neutron data refinement of the x = 0.37 sample indicates that the ordered moment is 4.3(1)μ B /Mn at 4.85 K and the amount of the Mn Bi antisites is negligible within the error bars. Isothermal magnetization data reveal a slight decrease of the interlayer plane-plane antiferromagnetic exchange interaction and a monotonic decrease of the magnetic anisotropy due to diluting magnetic ions and enlarging the unit cell. For x = 0.37, the application of external pressures enhances the interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling, boosting the Néel temperature at a rate of 1.4 K/GPa and the saturation field at a rate of 1.8 T/GPa. Furthermore, our first-principles calculations reveal that the band inversion in the two end materials, MnBi 2 Te 4 and PbBi 2 Te 4 , occurs at the Γ and Z point, respectively, while two gapless points appear at x = 0.44 and x = 0.66, suggesting possible topological phase transitions with doping.

Interplay of itinerant electrons and Ising moments in a hybrid honeycomb quantum magnet TmNi 3 Al 9

The interplay between itinerant electrons and local magnetic moments in quantum materials brings about rich and fascinating phenomena and stimulates various developments in the theoretical framework. In this work, thermodynamic, electric transport, and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on a newly synthesized honeycomb lattice magnet TmNi 3 Al 9 . Based on the experimental data, a magnetic-field–temperature phase diagram was constructed, exhibiting three essentially different magnetic regions. Below T N =2.97±0.02KTm 3+ , moments order antiferromagnetically in zero field. We found that the Tm 3+ ions form a pseudodoublet ground state with the Ising-like moments lying normal to the two-dimensional honeycomb layers. Application of a magnetic field along the easy axis gradually suppresses the antiferromagnetic order in favor of an induced ferromagnetic state above the critical field B c =0.92±0.05T. In the vicinity of B c , a strong enhancement of the quantum spin fluctuations was observed. The quantum Ising nature of the local moments and the coupling to itinerant electrons are discussed.

Field-Induced Magnetic States in the Metallic Rare-Earth Layered Triangular Antiferromagnet TbAuAl 4 Ge 2

Magnetic frustration in metallic rare- earth lanthanides (Ln) with 4f electrons is crucial for producing interesting magnetic phases with high magnetic anisotropy where intertwined charge and spin degrees of freedom lead to novel phenomena. Here we report on the magnetic, thermodynamic, and electrical transport properties of TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 . Tb ions form two-dimensional triangular lattice layers which stack along the crystalline c axis. The magnetic phase diagram reveals multiple nearly degenerate ordered states upon applying field along the magnetically easy ab-plane before saturation. The magnetoresistance in this configuration exhibits intricate field dependence that closely follows that of the magnetization while the specific heat reveals a region of highly enhanced entropy, suggesting the possibility of a nontrivial spin textured phase. For fields applied along the c axis (hard axis), we find linear magnetoresistance over a wide range of fields. Further, we compare the magnetic properties and magnetoresistance with an isostructural GdAuAl 4 Ge 2 single crystal. These results identify TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 as an environment for complex quantum spin states and pave the way for further investigations of the broader LnAuAl 4 Ge 2 family of materials.

Superconducting properties and gap structure of the topological superconductor candidate Ti 3 Sb

Here, we present a study of the superconducting properties of the candidate topological superconductor Ti 3 Sb. Electrical transport measurements show zero resistance with a T c,onset of ≈ 5.9 K with a transition width ΔT c ≈ 0.6 K. The superconducting phase boundaries as derived from magnetotransport and magnetic susceptibility measurements agree well. We estimate an upper critical field B c2 (0) ≈ 4.5 T. A Ginzburg-Landau (GL) analysis yields values of the coherence length and penetration depth of ξ = 6.2 nm and λ = 340 nm, respectively, and a GL parameter κ ≈ 55, indicating extreme type-II behavior. Furthermore, we observe a step height in the specific heat $\frac{Δ C_e}{γ T_c}$ ≈ 1.61 ± 0.24 (with T c = 4.8 ± 0.4 K), a value larger than the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer value of 1.43, suggesting modest coupling. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth via the tunnel-diode oscillator technique down to ≈ 450 mK show a full superconducting gap, consistent with a conventional s-wave gap structure.

Interplay of structure and magnetism in LuFe 4 ⁢Ge 2 tuned by hydrostatic pressure

Lu⁢Fe 4 ⁢Ge 2 crystallizes in the Zr⁢Fe 4 ⁢Si 2 -type structure, hosting chains of Fe tetrahedra giving rise to geometric frustration and low dimensionality. The compound orders antiferromagnetically at around 36 K accompanied by a simultaneous structural transition from a tetragonal phase to an orthorhombic phase. The hydrostatic pressure dependence of the magnetic and structural transitions is investigated using electrical transport, AC magnetic susceptibility, AC calorimetry, M⁢össbauer, muon-spin relaxation (μ⁢SR), and x-ray-diffraction measurements. External pressure suppresses the first-order transition to the antiferromagnetic phase (AFM1) around 1.8 GPa. The structural transition is largely unaffected by pressure and remains between 30 to 35 K for pressures up to 2 GPa. A second antiferromagnetic phase (AFM2) is observed at higher pressures. The transition from the paramagnetic to the AFM2 phase is of second-order nature and appears to be connected to the structural transition. The magnetic volume fraction obtained from μ⁢SR and M⁢össbauer measurements reveal that the entire sample undergoes magnetic ordering in both magnetic phases. In addition, similar low-temperature muon-precession frequencies in AFM1 and AFM2 phases point at similar ordered moments and magnetic structures in both phases. Our results further indicate enhanced magnetic fluctuations in the pressure-induced AFM2 phase. The experimental observations together with density functional theory calculations suggest that the magnetic- and structural-order parameters in Lu⁢Fe 4 ⁢Ge 2 are linked by magnetic frustration, causing the simultaneous magnetostructural transition.

Intrinsic Berry curvature driven anomalous Nernst thermopower in the semimetallic Heusler alloy CoFeVSb

Understanding of spin-heat coupling mechanisms and magnetothermoelectric phenomena, including the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), in emergent quaternary Heusler alloys is of practical importance for applications in thermal management and energy harvesting. Here, we demonstrate an intrinsic Berry curvature mediated anomalous Nernst thermopower in CoFeVSb, which orders magnetically at high temperature ( T C ≈ 850 K ) with a large saturation magnetization of ≈ 2.2 μ B / f . u . at room temperature. We show that the electron-electron elastic and electron-magnon inelastic scattering dominate longitudinal electrical transport at low temperatures ( T ≤ 50 K ), whereas the electron-phonon and electron-magnon scatterings govern it at higher T . The longitudinal thermopower is resulted mainly from the diffusive contribution with a very large longitudinal Seebeck coefficient ( 42 μ V K - 1 at 395 K). The value of the anomalous Nernst coefficient ( S ANE ) for CoFeVSb at room temperature is 0.039 μ V K - 1 which is higher than the compressively strained SrRu O 3 film ( 0.03 μ V K - 1 ) as well as the spin gapless semiconductor CoFeCrGa ( 0.018 μ V K - 1 ). On lowering T , both the ordinary Nernst coefficient and carrier mobility increase but an opposite trend is found for S ANE . Our ab initio simulations reveal the topological semimetallic nature of CoFeVSb with a pair of Weyl points. These Weyl crossings result in a significant contribution to the Berry curvature, leading to an intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity ( σ x y AHE ) of ≈ 85 S/cm, which matches well with experiment (77 S/cm at 2 K). Our experimental findings and ab initio calculations support the dominance of the intrinsic Berry curvature in the observed ANE. The ratio of σ x y AHE to the transverse anomalous thermoelectric conductivity ( α x y ANE ) shows an increasing trend with T attaining a sizable fraction of k B e ( ≈ 0.35 k B e ) at room temperature.

Electron irradiation reveals robust fully gapped superconductivity in LaNiGa 2

The effects of 2.5-MeV electron irradiation were studied in the superconducting phase of single crystals of LaNiGa 2 , using measurements of electrical transport and radio-frequency magnetic susceptibility. The London penetration depth is found to vary exponentially with temperature, suggesting a fully gapped Fermi surface. The inferred superfluid density is close to that of a single-gap weak-coupling isotropic s – wave superconductor. Superconductivity is extremely robust against nonmagnetic point-like disorder induced by electron irradiation. Our results place strong constraints on the previously proposed triplet pairing state by requiring fine-tuned impurity scattering amplitudes and are most naturally explained by a sign-preserving, weak-coupling, and approximately momentum-independent singlet superconducting state in LaNiGa 2 , which does not break time-reversal symmetry. Finally, we discuss how our findings could be reconciled with previous measurements that indicated magnetic signatures in the superconducting phase.

Double-domed temperature-pressure phase diagram of CePd 3 S 4

CePd 3 S 4 exhibits interplay between ferromagnetism (FM), quadrupolar order, and the Kondo effect at low temperatures with a FM transition temperature that is much higher than the value expected from the de Gennes scaling of the heavier RPd 3 S 4 compounds. In this work, we investigated the electrical transport and magnetic properties of CePd 3 S 4 under pressure up through 12 GPa so as to better understand the interplay between electronic and magnetic phases in this material. Our findings show that the low pressure FM state is suddenly replaced by a new magnetically ordered phase that is most likely antiferromagnetic that spans from ~ 7 GPa to ~ 11 GPa. Whereas this could be described as an example of avoided quantum criticality, given that clear changes in resistance and Hall data are detected near 6.3 GPa for all temperatures below 300 K, it is also possible that the change in ground state is a response to a pressure induced change in structure. Furthermore, the lack of any discernible change in the pressure dependence of the room temperature unit cell parameter/volume across this whole pressure range suggests that this change in structure is either more subtle than could be detected by our measurements (i.e. development of weak, new wave vector) or the transition is electronic (such as a Lifshitz transition).

Observation of cupratelike nonlinear terahertz responses in superconducting infinite-layer nickelates via two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy

The 𝑑-wave pairing symmetry in newly discovered infinite-layer nickelates remains highly debated compared to the widely accepted 𝑑-wave superconductivity in cuprates, despite recent intense efforts using equilibrium optical and electrical transport measurements. A complementary approach involves characterizing THz coherent nonlinear responses, which is currently lacking but needed, as it would offer new insights into the superconducting gap structure by characterizing Higgs modes and quasiparticle excitations. Here, in this study, we report THz 2D coherent spectroscopy (THz-2DCS) responses from the superconducting state in an infinite-layer nickelate. The 2D spectra clearly demonstrate the absence of hallmark signatures of 𝑠-wave pairing symmetry, such as resonant 2⁢Δ peaks at superconducting gaps. Instead, we observe gapless 2D spectra in the nickelate, centered around the THz driving frequency, with no noticeable shift as the temperature increases. These findings closely resemble the nodal superconductivity behavior expected in cuprates. Together with our simulations, these findings suggest that 2⁢Δ signatures in the 2D spectra of 𝑑-wave gap structures can be obscured by significant nodal quasiparticle excitations at arbitrarily low energies. This contrasts with the long-lived Higgs modes, observed as distinct 2⁢Δ peaks in a controlled THz-2DCS experiment on niobium, a representative example of dirty-limit s-wave superconductors. Our results have implications for understanding the unconventional superconductivity in nickelates and highlight the need to explore their coherent nonlinear dynamics.

Superconducting dome and structural changes in LaRu 3 ⁢Si 2 under pressure

LaRu 3 ⁢Si 2 is of current research interest as a kagome metal with a superconducting transition temperature, 𝑇 𝑐 ∼7 K, and higher-temperature charge density wave orders. Here we report on electrical transport and x-ray diffraction measurements on LaRu 3 ⁢Si 2 under pressure up to 65 GPa and 35 GPa, respectively. The superconducting transition temperature 𝑇 𝑐 first gets slightly enhanced and reaches a maximum ∼8.7 K at ∼8.5 GPa. With further applied pressure, 𝑇 𝑐 is initially gradually suppressed, then more rapidly suppressed, followed by gradual suppression, revealing a superconducting dome. Two possible pressure-induced structural phase transitions are also observed at room temperature, from the original hexagonal phase to another hexagonal structure above ∼11.5 GPa, and further to a structure with lower symmetry above ∼23.5 GPa. These transition pressures roughly correlate with features found in our pressure-dependent transport data.
