Synchronous pumping of picosecond dye laser using high efficiency second harmonic generation from optical fibres

The stable operation of a mode-locked dye laser synchronously pumped by the second harmonic of an Nd:YAG laser produced in an Nd codoped germanosilicate optical fiber is reported. The optical fiber preparation technique, which results in a second harmonic conversion efficiency of 2 percent, is described. This optical fiber SHG conversion efficiency is the highest reported to date using a continuous-wave mode-locked laser.

Development of a single-phase harmonic power flow program to study the 20 kHz AC power system for large spacecraft

The development of software is described to aid in design and analysis of AC power systems for large spacecraft. The algorithm is an important version of harmonic power flow program, HARMFLO, used for the study of AC power quality. The new program is applicable to three-phase systems typified by terrestrial power systems, and single-phase systems characteristic of space power systems. The modified HARMFLO accommodates system operating frequencies ranging from terrestrial 60 Hz to and beyond aerospace 20 kHz, and can handle both source and load-end harmonic distortions. Comparison of simulation and test results of a representative spacecraft power system shows a satisfactory correlation. Recommendations are made for the direction of future improvements to the software, to enhance its usefulness to power system designer and analysts.

The Ohio State 1991 geopotential and sea surface topography harmonic coefficient models

The computation is described of a geopotential model to deg 360, a sea surface topography model to deg 10/15, and adjusted Geosat orbits for the first year of the exact repeat mission (ERM). This study started from the GEM-T2 potential coefficient model and it's error covariance matrix and Geosat orbits (for 22 ERMs) computed by Haines et al. using the GEM-T2 model. The first step followed the general procedures which use a radial orbit error theory originally developed by English. The Geosat data was processed to find corrections to the a priori geopotential model, corrections to a radial orbit error model for 76 Geosat arcs, and coefficients of a harmonic representation of the sea surface topography. The second stage of the analysis took place by doing a combination of the GEM-T2 coefficients with 30 deg gravity data derived from surface gravity data and anomalies obtained from altimeter data. The analysis has shown how a high degree spherical harmonic model can be determined combining the best aspects of two different analysis techniques. The error analysis was described that has led to the accuracy estimates for all the coefficients to deg 360. Significant work is needed to improve the modeling effort.

Exact solution of a quantum forced time-dependent harmonic oscillator

The Schrodinger equation is used to exactly evaluate the propagator, wave function, energy expectation values, uncertainty values, and coherent state for a harmonic oscillator with a time dependent frequency and an external driving time dependent force. These quantities represent the solution of the classical equation of motion for the time dependent harmonic oscillator.

The influence of higher harmonics on vortex pairing in an axisymmetric mixing layer

Strong forcing was used to produce vortex pairing in a submerged axisymmetric water jet. Phase-averaged hot-wire measurements were combined with phase-averaged flow visualization to identify the relevant nonlinear interactions. The leading resonant interaction was not a subharmonic resonance. Instead, it was a triad resonance involving the subharmonic, the fundamental and the 3/2 harmonic. The profound influence of higher harmonics on the amplification of the fundamental and subharmonic was demonstrated in a systematic way by successive truncation of the Fourier series representation of the excitation waveform.

Real-time obstacle avoidance using harmonic potential functions

This paper presents a new formulation of the artificial potential approach to the obstacle avoidance problem for a mobile robot or a manipulator in a known environment. Previous formulations of artificial potentials for obstacle avoidance have exhibited local minima in a cluttered environment. To build an artificial potential field, harmonic functions that completely eliminate local minima even for a cluttered environment are used. The panel method is employed to represent arbitrarily shaped obstacles and to derive the potential over the whole space. Based on this potential function, an elegant control strategy is proposed for the real-time control of a robot. The harmonic potential, the panel method, and the control strategy are tested with a bar-shaped mobile robot and a three-degree-of-freedom planar redundant manipulator.

Use of non-spherical gravity harmonics for relative motion GN/C (category 2)

Detailed analysis of the Automatic Rendezvous and Capture problem indicate a need for three different regions of mathematical description for the GN&C algorithms: (1) multi-vehicle orbital mechanics to the rendezvous interface point, i.e., within 100 nm; (2) relative motion solutions (such as Clohessy-Wiltshire type) from the far-field to the near-field interface, i.e., within 1 nm and; (3) close proximity motion - the near-field motion where the relative differences in the gravitational and orbit inertial accelerations can be neglected from the equations of motion. Limit boundaries to these regions can be precisely defined by further analysis and will be functions of the tracking measurement accuracies and the computer resources available for the solution of the algorithms. This paper analyzes the relative motion in Regions 2 and 3 above and present the derivation and discussion of the general case of non-spherical gravitational perturbed relative motion. Mathematical deviations from the numerically integrated spherical gravity case and solutions from the Clohessy-Wiltshire equations are presented in the analysis. Based upon this preliminary analysis, it is recommended that further efforts be used to assess the relative position and velocity differences in Region 2 due to non-spherical gravity harmonics and that viable GN&C algorithms be developed to include these gravity perturbations (especially the effects of the first gravity harmonic, J2).

Phase of the quantum harmonic oscillator with applications to optical polarization

The phase of the quantum harmonic oscillator, the temporal distribution of a particle in a square-well potential, and a quantum theory of angles are derived from a general theory of complementarity. Schwinger's harmonic oscillator model of angular momenta is modified for the case of photons. Angular distributions for systems of identical and distinguishable particles are discussed. Unitary and antiunitary time reversal operators are then presented and applied to optical polarization states in birefringent media.

Harmonic oscillator states in aberration optics

The states of the three-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator classify optical aberrations of axis-symmetric systems due to the isomorphism between the two mathematical structures. Cartesian quanta and angular momentum classifications have their corresponding aberration classifications. The operation of concatenation of optical elements introduces a new operation between harmonic oscillator states.

Double simple-harmonic-oscillator formulation of the thermal equilibrium of a fluid interacting with a coherent source of phonons

A formulation is given for a collection of phonons (sound) in a fluid at a non-zero temperature which uses the simple harmonic oscillator twice; one to give a stochastic thermal 'noise' process and the other which generates a coherent Glauber state of phonons. Simple thermodynamic observables are calculated and the acoustic two point function, 'contrast' is presented. The role of 'coherence' in an equilibrium system is clarified by these results and the simple harmonic oscillator is a key structure in both the formulation and the calculations.

Numerical Evaluation by Harmonic Analysis of the (Epsilon)-Function of the Theodorsen Arbitrary-Airfoil Potential Theory

Finite trigonometric series is fitted by harmonic analysis as an approximation function to the psi function of the Theodorsen arbitrary-airfoil potential theory. By harmonic synthesis, the corresponding conjugate trigonometric series is used as an approximation to the epsilon function. A set of coefficients of particularly simple form is obtained algebraically for direct calculation of the epsilon values from the corresponding set of psi values. Complete derivation of this process is presented.

A parametric study of harmonic rotor hub loads

A parametric study of vibratory rotor hub loads in a nonrotating system is presented. The study is based on a CAMRAD/JA model constructed for the GBH (Growth Version of Blackhawk Helicopter) Mach-scaled wind tunnel rotor model with high blade twist (-16 deg). The theoretical hub load predictions are validated by correlation with available measured data. Effects of various blade aeroelastic design changes on the harmonic nonrotating frame hub loads at both low and high forward flight speeds are investigated. The study aims to illustrate some of the physical mechanisms for change in the harmonic rotor hub loads due to blade design variations.

Two-dimensional radiative transfer in cloudy atmospheres - The spherical harmonic spatial grid method

A new two-dimensional monochromatic method that computes the transfer of solar or thermal radiation through atmospheres with arbitrary optical properties is described. The model discretizes the radiative transfer equation by expanding the angular part of the radiance field in a spherical harmonic series and representing the spatial part with a discrete grid. The resulting sparse coupled system of equations is solved iteratively with the conjugate gradient method. A Monte Carlo model is used for extensive verification of outgoing flux and radiance values from both smooth and highly variable (multifractal) media. The spherical harmonic expansion naturally allows for different levels of approximation, but tests show that the 2D equivalent of the two-stream approximation is poor at approximating variations in the outgoing flux. The model developed here is shown to be highly efficient so that media with tens of thousands of grid points can be computed in minutes. The large improvement in efficiency will permit quick, accurate radiative transfer calculations of realistic cloud fields and improve our understanding of the effect of inhomogeneity on radiative transfer in cloudy atmospheres.

A possible generalization of the harmonic oscillator potential

A four-parameter potential is analyzed, which contains the three-dimensional harmonic oscillator as a special case. This potential is exactly solvable and retains several characteristics of the harmonic oscillator, and also of the Coulomb problem. The possibility of similar generalizations of other potentials is also pointed out.

An algebraic cluster model based on the harmonic oscillator basis

We discuss the semimicroscopic algebraic cluster model introduced recently, in which the internal structure of the nuclear clusters is described by the harmonic oscillator shell model, while their relative motion is accounted for by the Vibron model. The algebraic formulation of the model makes extensive use of techniques associated with harmonic oscillators and their symmetry group, SU(3). The model is applied to some cluster systems and is found to reproduce important characteristics of nuclei in the sd-shell region. An approximate SU(3) dynamical symmetry is also found to hold for the C-12 + C-12 system.

Euler potentials of current-free fields expressed in spherical harmonics

Given a magnetic field B = -del(vector differential operator)(sub gamma) with gamma expanded in spherical harmonics, it is shown that analytic Euler potentials may be derived for B if gamma is asymmetrical but contains only the contribution of a single index n. This work generalizes a result for sectorial harmonics with n = m, derived by Willis and Gardiner (1988).

Spherical Harmonics Analysis of the ECMWF Global Wind Fields at the 10-Meter Height Level During 1985: A Collection of Figures Illustrating Results

Half-daily global wind speeds in the east-west (u) and north-south (v) directions at the 10-meter height level were obtained from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) data set of global analyses. The data set covered the period 1985 January to 1995 January. A spherical harmonic expansion to degree and order 50 was used to perform harmonic analysis of the east-west (u) and north-south (v) velocity field components. The resulting wind field is displayed, as well as the residual of the fit, at a particular time. The contribution of particular coefficients is shown. The time variability of the coefficients up to degree and order 3 is presented. Corresponding power spectrum plots are given. Time series analyses were applied also to the power associated with degrees 0-10; the results are included.
