Microstructure and heteroatom dictate the doping mechanism and thermoelectric properties of poly(alkyl-chalcogenophenes)

Heteroatom substitution can favorably alter electronic transport in conductive polymers to improve their thermoelectric performance. Here we report the spectroscopic, structural, and thermoelectric properties of poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl) chalcogenophenes) or P3RX doped with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ), where the heteroatom [X = thiophene (T), selenophene (Se), tellurophene (Te)], the doping methodology, and extent of doping are systematically varied. Spectroscopic measurements reveal that while all P3RX polymers are appreciably doped, the doping mechanism is inherently different. Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT, used as a control) and poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl)tellurophene) (P3RTe) are doped primarily via integer charge transfer (ICT), whereas poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl)selenophene) (P3RSe) and poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl)thiophene) (P3RT) are doped via charge transfer complex (CTC) mechanisms. Despite these differences, all polymers saturate with roughly the same number of F4TCNQ counterions (1 dopant per 4 to 6 heterocycles), reinforcing the idea that the extent of charge transfer varies with the doping mechanism. Grazing incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering measurements provide insight into the structural driving forces behind different doping mechanisms—P3RT and P3RSe have similar microstructures in which F4TCNQ intercalates between the π-stacked backbones resulting in CTC doping (localized carriers), while P3HT and P3RTe have microstructures in which F4TCNQ intercalates in the alkyl side chain region, giving rise to ICT doping (delocalized carriers). These structural and spectroscopic observations shed light on why P3HT and P3RTe obtain electrical conductivities ca. 3 S/cm, while P3RT and P3RSe have conductivities <10–3 S/cm under the same thin film processing conditions. Ultimately, this work quantifies the effects of heteroatom, microstructural ordering, extent of doping, and doping mechanism, thereby providing rational guidance for designing future thermoelectric polymer-dopant systems.

Precise equilibrium structures of 1 H - and 2 H -1,2,3-triazoles (C 2 H 3 N 3 ) by millimeter-wave spectroscopy

The 1H- and 2H-1,2,3-triazoles are isomeric five-membered ring, aromatic heterocycles that may undergo chemical equilibration by virtue of intramolecular hydrogen migration (tautomerization). Using millimeter-wave spectroscopy in the 130–375 GHz frequency range, we measured the spectroscopic constants for thirteen 1H-1,2,3-triazole and sixteen 2H-1,2,3-triazole isotopologues. Herein, we provide highly accurate and highly precise semi-experimental equilibrium (r e SE ) structures for the two tautomers based on the spectroscopic constants of each set of isotopologues, together with vibration–rotation interaction and electron-mass distribution corrections calculated using coupled-cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples calculations [CCSD(T)/cc-pCVTZ]. The resultant structures are compared with a “best theoretical estimate” (BTE), which has recently been shown to be in exceptional agreement with the semi-experimental equilibrium structures of other aromatic molecules. Bond distances of the 1H tautomer are determined to <0.0008 Å and bond angles to <0.2°. For the 2H tautomer, bond angles are also determined to <0.2°, but bond distances are less precise (2σ ≤ 0.0015). Finally, agreement between BTE and r e SE values is discussed.

Multistep catalytic abiotic CO2 conversion to sugars through C1 intermediates

Carbon dioxide (CO2) to multicarbon (Cn) upgrading for commodity chemicals, fuel production, or artificial food synthesis using renewable energy input is a golden target for researchers in sustainable carbon emission reduction. Here, we explore and analyze a flexible modular roadmap for the task, utilizing sequential electro-, photo-, and organocatalysis to develop a strategy for CO2 conversion using the key and elusive formaldehyde precursor of interest for sugar generation. We study the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction to methanol in a flow cell and its discontinuous photooxidation to formaldehyde (PMOR) with excellent selectivity. Utilizing a highly active N-heterocyclic carbene catalyst enables tunable generation of C4-C6 aldoses without undesirable byproducts, with carbon conversion yield reaching 60 to 80% for desired pentose, tetrose, and triose product mixtures and over 20% for hexose. This approach presents a roadmap for CO2 valorization, aiming to bridge carbon waste streams with sustainable sugar synthesis and opening broad avenues for green chemical production.

Crystal structure of MbnF: an NADPH-dependent flavin monooxygenase from Methylocystis strain SB2

Methanobactins (MBs) are ribosomally produced and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) that are used by methanotrophs for copper acquisition. The signature post-translational modification of MBs is the formation of two heterocyclic groups, either an oxazolone, pyrazinedione or imidazolone group, with an associated thioamide from an X -Cys dipeptide. The precursor peptide (MbnA) for MB formation is found in a gene cluster of MB-associated genes. The exact biosynthetic pathway of MB formation is not yet fully understood, and there are still uncharacterized proteins in some MB gene clusters, particularly those that produce pyrazinedione or imidazolone rings. One such protein is MbnF, which is proposed to be a flavin monooxygenase (FMO) based on homology. To help to elucidate its possible function, MbnF from Methylocystis sp. strain SB2 was recombinantly produced in Escherichia coli and its X-ray crystal structure was resolved to 2.6 Å resolution. Based on its structural features, MbnF appears to be a type A FMO, most of which catalyze hydroxylation reactions. Preliminary functional characterization shows that MbnF preferentially oxidizes NADPH over NADH, supporting NAD(P)H-mediated flavin reduction, which is the initial step in the reaction cycle of several type A FMO enzymes. It is also shown that MbnF binds the precursor peptide for MB, with subsequent loss of the leader peptide sequence as well as the last three C-terminal amino acids, suggesting that MbnF might be needed for this process to occur. Finally, molecular-dynamics simulations revealed a channel in MbnF that is capable of accommodating the core MbnA fragment minus the three C-terminal amino acids.

Is the Chemisorbed CO 2 in Ionic Liquid Electrolytes Active for Electrochemical Utilization? A Case Study on Carboxylate and Carbamate Speciation

This study examines the activity of chemisorbed CO 2 species in the microenvironment formed by bifunctional ionic liquids (ILs) in the reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO 2 to CO on silver. Comparative electroanalytical measurements with imidazolium based ILs were performed to probe the impact of electrostatic interactions, anion and cation basicity, and hydrogen bonding on RCC. Particularly, ILs with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([EMIM]+) and 1-ethyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium ([EMMIM]+) cations and aprotic heterocyclic anions of 2-cyanopyrrolide ([2-CNpyr]) and 1,2,4-triazolide ([124-Triz]) were examined for RCC. It was found that anion–CO 2 carbamate complexes facilitate RCC at significantly lower overpotentials compared to cation–CO 2 carboxylate complexes. Additionally, [EMIM]+ was found to better stabilize anion–CO 2 complexes at the interface than [EMMIM]+. Furthermore, it was found that 2-CNpyrH that naturally forms during CO 2 absorption competes for electrode surface adsorption with the anion–CO 2 carbamate complex, thereby reducing the electrochemical activity of the anion–CO 2 complex. These results highlight the importance of IL structure in tuning the interfacial interactions and suggest that ILs with anion-dominated CO 2 chemisorption enhances CO 2 utilization in RCC applications.

Preparation of 1,3-Dihydroxyphenazine

The ability to effectively store energy produced by intermittent renewable sources is a critical challenge for chemists and materials scientists. Redox flow batteries (RFB), which generate current by the flow of electrons between dissolved redox active compounds in separate solutions, are envisioned as a method to store renewable energy at the electrical grid scale. The best known examples of RFBs are driven by redox active metal or main group complexes. Within the past decade, redox active organic molecules have begun to be used in the construction of RFBs with high cell potential and cycle stability, at economical price points. Of particular interest are substituted dihydroxy phenazines, a class of heterocycles, that have recently been used as an anolyte for aqueous organic RFBs. Recent work indicates that different regioisomers of dihydroxyphenazine show dramatically different solubility and stability under electrochemical cycling conditions. Of particular interest was 1,3-dihydroxyphenazine (1,3-DHP), which showed greater than 1.5 M solubility in 2M KOH and excellent electrochemical stability. Current methods of producing 1,3-DHP, however, are low yielding and cumbersome. In the article proposal that follows, we offer an improved method of producing 1,3-DHP at high purity and moderate yield. The method detailed below was used by the Materials Engineering Research Facility (MERF) at Argonne National Lab to deliver more than 1.5 kg of this compound for use in the construction of aqueous organic RFBs.

Using a recirculating anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor to treat hydrothermal liquefaction aqueous by-product

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has the potential to improve resource recovery at water resource recovery facilities (WRRF), but the production of a high-strength aqueous by-product (HTL-aq) is hampering HTL implementation. The formation of biofilms in anaerobic digestion have been shown to be useful when degrading recalcitrant compounds present in HTL-aq due to the promotion of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) and increase in the microbial activity of syntrophic and methanogenic populations. The Recirculating Anaerobic Dynamic Membrane Bioreactor (RAnDMBr) was able to degrade 65% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) at 1.5 ± 0.2 g COD LR −1 day −1 and 5.6 ± 2.3 days producing 0.19 ± 0.02 LCH4 gCOD fed −1 . However, adding a solution rich in nutrients on a daily basis was necessary. The system presented microbial populations able to degrade aromatic compounds (i.e., Anaerolinaceae) to perform DIET and syntrophy (i.e., Syntrophus) and methanogens (i.e., Methanobacterium and Methanosarcina) with the biofilm having a higher relative abundance of methanogens than the suspended biomass. Increasing the organic loading rate to 2 g COD LR −1 day −1 caused inhibition in the system by accumulation of volatile fatty acids, probably due to an increase in phenol, N-heterocyclic and aromatic compounds. Overall, this research shows that the RAnDMBr can be used to treat HTL-aq in WRRF without inhibition at OLRs of 1.5 ± 0.2 g COD LR −1 day −1 or lower, making HTL-aq treatment more feasible. Future research should focus co-digestion of HTL-aq with a co-substrate rich in nutrients and on fouling mitigation strategies that will allow to increase the recirculation ratio to promote advective substrate transport through the biofilm.

Tracing priming effects in palsa peat carbon dynamics using a stable isotope-assisted metabolomics approach

Introduction: Peatlands store up to a third of global soil carbon, and in high latitudes their litter inputs are increasing and changing in composition under climate change. Although litter significantly influences peatland carbon and nutrient dynamics by changing the overall lability of peatland organic matter, the physicochemical mechanisms of this impact—and thus its full scope—remain poorly understood. Methods: We applied multimodal metabolomics (UPLC-HRMS, 1 H NMR) paired with 13 C Stable Isotope-Assisted Metabolomics (SIAM) to track litter carbon and its potential priming effects on both existing soil organic matter and carbon gas emissions. Through this approach, we achieved molecule-specific tracking of carbon transformations at unprecedented detail. Results: Our analysis revealed several key findings about carbon dynamics in palsa peat. Microbes responded rapidly to litter addition, producing a short-term increase in CO 2 emissions, fueled nearly exclusively by transformations of litter carbon. Litter inputs significantly contributed to the organic nitrogen pool through amino acids and peptide derivatives, which served as readily accessible nutrient sources for microbial communities. We traced the fate of plant-derived polyphenols including flavonoids like rutin, finding evidence of their degradation through heterocyclic C-ring fission, while accumulation of some polyphenols suggested their role in limiting overall decomposition. The SIAM approach detected subtle molecular changes indicating minimal and transient priming activity that was undetectable through conventional gas measurements alone. This transient response was characterized by brief microbial stimulation followed by rapid return to baseline metabolism. Pre-existing peat organic matter remained relatively stable; significant priming of its consumption was not observed, nor was its structural alteration. Discussion: This suggests that while litter inputs temporarily increase CO 2 emissions, they don’t sustain long-term acceleration of stored carbon decomposition or substantially decrease peat’s carbon store capacity. Our findings demonstrate how technological advancements in analytical tools can provide a more detailed view of carbon cycling processes in complex soil systems.

Thiourea-Derived Chelating Ligands and Their Organometallic Compounds: Investigations into Their Anticancer Activity

Thiones have been investigated as ligands in metal complexes with catalytic and biological activity. We report the synthesis, characterization, and biological evaluation of a series of MII/III complexes of the general formulae [M II (cym)(L)Cl]X (cym = η 6 -p-cymene) or [M III (Cp*)(L)Cl]X (Cp* = η 5 -pentamethylcyclopentadienyl), where X = Cl - or PF 6 - , and L represents heterocyclic derivatives of thiourea. The thiones feature a benzyl-triazolyl pendant and they act as bidentate ligands via N,S-coordination to the metal centers. Several derivatives have been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. NMR investigations showed a counterion-dependent shift of several protons due to the interaction with the counterions. These NMR investigations were complemented with X-ray diffraction analysis data and the effects of different counterions on the secondary coordination sphere were also investigated by DFT calculations. In biological studies, the Ir benzimidazole derivative was found to accumulate in the cytoplasm and it was the most cytotoxic derivative investigated.

Detection of Cyclopropenylidene on Titan with ALMA

We report the first detection on Titan of the small cyclic molecule cyclopropenylidene (c-C{sub 3}H{sub 2}) from high-sensitivity spectroscopic observations made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Multiple lines of cyclopropenylidene were detected in two separate data sets: ∼251 GHz in 2016 (Band 6) and ∼352 GHz in 2017 (Band 7). Modeling of these emissions indicates abundances of 0.50 ± 0.14 ppb (2016) and 0.28 ± 0.08 (2017) for a 350 km step model, which may either signify a decrease in abundance, or a mean value of 0.33 ± 0.07 ppb. Inferred column abundances are (3–5) × 10{sup 12} cm{sup −2} in 2016 and (1–2) × 10{sup 12} cm{sup −2} in 2017, similar to photochemical model predictions. Previously the C{sub 3}H{sub 3}{sup +} ion has been measured in Titan’s ionosphere by Cassini’s Ion and Neutral Mass Spectrometer (INMS), but the neutral (unprotonated) species has not been detected until now, and aromatic versus aliphatic structure could not be determined by the INMS. Our work therefore represents the first unambiguous detection of cyclopropenylidene, the second known cyclic molecule in Titan’s atmosphere along with benzene (C{sub 6}H{sub 6}) and the first time this molecule has been detected in a planetary atmosphere. We also searched for the N-heterocycle molecules pyridine and pyrimidine finding nondetections in both cases, and determining 2σ upper limits of 1.15 ppb (c-C{sub 5}H{sub 5}N) and 0.85 ppb (c-C{sub 4}H{sub 4}N{sub 2}) for uniform abundances above 300 km. These new results on cyclic molecules provide fresh constraints on photochemical pathways in Titan’s atmosphere, and will require new modeling and experimental work to fully understand the implications for complex molecule formation.

Composite seals for liquid hydrogen and nuclear radiation environments.

Description of plastic composite seals for service in a liquid-hydrogen and nuclear-radiation environment. The radiation-resistant aromatic heterocyclic class of polymers, including polyimide, polybenzimidazole, and polyquinoxaline, were evaluated for this application. The seal developed is based on a design involving a resin-starved laminate consisting of alternating layers of woven glass fabric and polymer film. This design imparts a mechanical spring characteristic to the seal, resulting in essentially complete elastic recovery when unloaded, and eliminates cold flow. Encapsulating techniques employing the polyquinoxaline polymer were developed which rendered the seal impervious to liquid hydrogen. The seals were tested before and after gamma irradiation up to 10 to the 10th ergs/g. Load/deflection and leakage tests were performed over a temperature range from -423 through +500 F.
