This document is an addendum to the NASA Satellite Communications Application Research (SCAR) Phase 2 Final Report, 'Efficient High Power, Solid State Amplifier for EHF Communications.' This report describes the work performed from 1 August 1993 to 11 March 1994, under contract number NASW-4513. During this reporting period an array of transistor amplifiers was repaired by replacing all MMIC amplifier chips. The amplifier array was then tested using three different feedhorn configurations. Descriptions, procedures, and results of this testing are presented in this report, and conclusions are drawn based on the test results obtained.

Highly Efficient Design-of-Experiments Methods for Combining CFD Analysis and Experimental Data

It is the purpose of this study to examine the impact of "highly efficient" Design-of-Experiments (DOE) methods for combining sets of CFD generated analysis data with smaller sets of Experimental test data in order to accurately predict performance results where experimental test data were not obtained. The study examines the impact of micro-ramp flow control on the shock wave boundary layer (SWBL) interaction where a complete paired set of data exist from both CFD analysis and Experimental measurements By combining the complete set of CFD analysis data composed of fifteen (15) cases with a smaller subset of experimental test data containing four/five (4/5) cases, compound data sets (CFD/EXP) were generated which allows the prediction of the complete set of Experimental results No statistical difference were found to exist between the combined (CFD/EXP) generated data sets and the complete Experimental data set composed of fifteen (15) cases. The same optimal micro-ramp configuration was obtained using the (CFD/EXP) generated data as obtained with the complete set of Experimental data, and the DOE response surfaces generated by the two data sets were also not statistically different.

Low cost high efficiency GaAs monolithic RF module for SARSAT distress beacons

Low cost high performance (5 Watts output) 406 MHz beacons are urgently needed to realize the maximum utilization of the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking (SARSAT) system spearheaded in the U.S. by NASA. Although current technology can produce beacons meeting the output power requirement, power consumption is high due to the low efficiency of available transmitters. Field performance is currently unsatisfactory due to the lack of safe and reliable high density batteries capable of operation at -40 C. Low cost production is also a crucial but elusive requirement for the ultimate wide scale utilization of this system. Microwave Monolithics Incorporated (MMInc.) has proposed to make both the technical and cost goals for the SARSAT beacon attainable by developing a monolithic GaAs chip set for the RF module. This chip set consists of a high efficiency power amplifier and a bi-phase modulator. In addition to implementing the RF module in Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) form to minimize ultimate production costs, the power amplifier has a power-added efficiency nearly twice that attained with current commercial technology. A distress beacon built using this RF module chip set will be significantly smaller in size and lighter in weight due to a smaller battery requirement, since the 406 MHz signal source and the digital controller have far lower power consumption compared to the 5 watt power amplifier. All the program tasks have been successfully completed. The GaAs MMIC RF module chip set has been designed to be compatible with the present 406 MHz signal source and digital controller. A complete high performance low cost SARSAT beacon can be realized with only additional minor iteration and systems integration.

Low-cost, Highly Efficient and Fast Thermally Pressed Scalable Carbon-based Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

This Final Technical Report summarizes work completed under Award Number DEEE0009833, titled "Low-cost, Highly Efficient and Fast Thermally Pressed Scalable Carbon-based Planar Perovskite Solar Cells." The project addressed the central technical problem that carbon-electrode perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) can reduce electrode costs and improve environmental durability, but they have historically lagged noble-metalcontact devices due to poor carbon/perovskite contact, high carbon-electrode resistance, imperfect hole extraction, and insufficient operational stability. The Statement of Project Objectives (SOPO), therefore, required systematic engineering of thermally pressed carbon-based planar perovskite solar cells by improving the carbon/perovskite interface quality, improving carbon-electrode conductivity, and further increasing device stability. The work advanced understanding of carbon-based perovskite photovoltaics by connecting device performance to three coupled mechanisms: interfacial recombination at the perovskite/hole-transport-layer/carbon stack; lateral and vertical transport losses in carbon contacts; and instability driven by moisture, heat, illumination, ion migration, and slow/variable manufacturing steps.

High efficiency multifrequency feed

Antenna systems and particularly compact and simple antenna feeds which can transmit and receive simultaneously in at least three frequency bands, each with high efficiency and polarization diversity are described. The feed system is applicable for frequency bands having nominal frequency bands with the ratio 1:4:6. By way of example, satellite communications telemetry bands operate in frequency bands 0.8 - 1.0 GHz, 3.7 - 4.2 GHz and 5.9 - 6.4 GHz. In addition, the antenna system of the invention has monopulse capability for reception with circular or diverse polarization at frequency band 1.

High-efficiency silicon solar cells - Development, current issues and future directions

This paper provides a review of material, process, and design considerations that are essential for achieving high-efficiency silicon solar cells. It describes an approach that resulted in 18.0-18.5-percent-efficient cells on low-resistivity float-zone silicon material. It is shown experimentally that a combination of surface passivation and double-layer antireflection coating can provide 2-3 percent (absolute) improvement in cell efficiency provided the material, process and cell design are carefully selected.

Sonic Wafering of III-V substrates for High Efficiency Cells: A path to <$0.50/W

This project developed and demonstrated Sonic Lift-off, a novel technology that enables the reuse of expensive semiconductor substrates used to manufacture high-efficiency solar cells. By using sound waves to precisely separate thin layers of material, the process significantly reduces manufacturing costs while maintaining the performance of advanced III–V solar cells. These solar cells are among the most efficient in the world and are used in space, aerospace, and emerging terrestrial applications. The results of this work show that substrate reuse can be achieved without degrading device performance, offering a pathway to more affordable, high-performance solar technologies. This advancement supports U.S. clean energy goals by enabling broader deployment of renewable energy systems and strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities in advanced photovoltaics.
