Immersive Simulations and Engineering Environment (iSEE): Increasing the Realism of Simulations

The Immersive Simulations and Engineering Environment (iSEE) lab at Kennedy Space Center has been operating with its current team since 2017. The lab provides National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) with simulations that show the stress and strain that a strenuous task can cause on a body. Previously the lab was using software that was efficient in ergonomic analysis of a human body, but limited in creating a realistic simulation. To produce a more realistic simulation, the iSEE invested in new software that could potentially create an environment that could show the viewer a simulation that was closer to reality.

Scattering and Extinction by Spherical Particles Immersed in an Absorbing Host Medium

Many applications of electromagnetic scattering involve particles immersed in an absorbing rather than lossless medium, thereby making the conventional scattering theory potentially inapplicable. To analyze this issue quantitatively, we employ the FORTRAN program developed recently on the basis of the first-principles electromagnetic theory to study far-field scattering by spherical particles embedded in an absorbing infinite host medium. We further examine the phenomenon of negative extinction identified recently for monodisperse spheres and uncover additional evidence in favor of its interference origin. We identify the main effects of increasing the width of the size distribution on the ensemble-averaged extinction efficiency factor and show that negative extinction can be eradicated by averaging over a very narrow size distribution. We also analyze, for the first time, the effects of absorption inside the host medium and ensemble averaging on the phase function and other elements of the Stokes scattering matrix. It is shown in particular that increasing absorption significantly suppresses the interference structure and can result in a dramatic expansion of the areas of positive polarization. Furthermore, the phase functions computed for larger effective size parameters can develop a very deep minimum at side-scattering angles bracketed by a strong diffraction peak in the forward direction and a pronounced backscattering maximum.

Immersive Simulations and Engineering Environment (iSEE): Improving Fidelity of Virtual Reality Simulations

The Immersive Simulation and Engineering Environment (iSEE) provides Kennedy Space Center (KSC) with accurate Human Systems Integration (HSI) analysis of the stresses on a human body incurred from physical work, along with accessibility and reach factors. Human Factors engineers can observe the simulations conducted by iSEE and work with the gathered data to help make the working environment at KSC safer. The software that runs the HSI analysis, however, provides users with a low fidelity virtual environment. Previously, this led to the addition and implementation of other iSEE programs that were capable of higher-fidelity simulations. The difficulties of streamlining the workflow in the lab with these new programs is currently being addressed.

Enhancing Metal Additive Manufacturing Training with the Advanced Vision Language Model: A Pathway to Immersive Augmented Reality Training for Non-Experts

This paper introduces an innovative training system for the Renishaw AM400 metal printer, leveraging the synergy of the advanced Vision Language Model (VLM) with Augmented Reality (AR) within the Digital Twins (DT) framework. Aimed at overcoming the limitations of conventional training methods in metal additive manufacturing (AM), our system integrates AR to provide an immersive learning environment, enhancing the real-world experience with interactive digital overlays. The core of the system lies in its use of VLM, which, pre-trained on diverse datasets, excels in processing multi-modal data, thereby offering nuanced and contextually relevant guidance for trainees. Key experiments demonstrate the system’s effectiveness, particularly highlighting the usage of VLM as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) agent to integrate external tools like YOLO-v7 for valve state classification and CRAFT for control panel text recognition. This approach significantly improves recognition accuracy, operational understanding, and human–machine interaction, especially for non-expert users, making complex metal AM operations more accessible. The research not only showcases the potential of AR and VLM in industrial training but also sets a new standard for smart manufacturing practices, indicating broader applications in various industrial domains.

Exploring the Use of Large Immersive Display Systems in the Nuclear Industry

Large immersive display systems play a critical role in the nuclear industry by enabling advanced training, design reviews, scientific visualization, and safety simulations. These systems, such as CAVE and powerwalls, allow engineers and operators to interact with virtual nuclear environments in real-time, providing a deeper understanding of complex systems. Their ability to simulate real-world scenarios for testing and optimization in a safe, controlled environment ensures that operators and engineers can refine process, enhance safety protocols, and troubleshoot complex challenges. This article outlines key lessons learned from deploying these systems, practical insights into their applications, and considerations for future improvements, aiming to guide their broader adoption and effective use in the nuclear industry.

Mobile Hot Cell Digital Twin using Immersive Virtual Environment

Sealed radioactive sources are utilized for a wide range of applications across nuclear facilities, universities, hospitals, and industry. When these sources reach the end of their serviceable life, they become waste. This radioactive waste then goes through a process of recapture and then transfer to long term storage. With the advancement of technology in conjunction with better accessibility of technology, industries are exploring the use of digital automation to enhance productivity, efficiency, and safety while minimizing operation and maintenance costs, health and environmental risks, and uncertainty in the project life cycles. One area for exploration and the use of Digital Twin for providing a robust, versatile, and safe solution for recapturing spent sources.

Object manipulation in immersive virtual environments: Hand Motion tracking technology and snap-to-fit function

There have been recent efforts to use virtual reality and manipulation to train construction workers and inspection. However, there is a lack of research efforts comparing and evaluating virtual manipulation hardware for construction tasks. Moreover, the current practice of virtual manipulation has limited functionality to guide users with the placement of objects in virtual environments. To address these issues, this paper presents 1) a detailed case study that compares three types of manipulation hardware (image-based, infrared-based, and magnetic-based) for construction applications and 2) a snap-to-fit method that improves the VM through solving limitations of the advanced virtual reality interaction metaphors. The latter enhances the placement process for manipulation by comparing two models (e.g., scan and BIM models) for proper placement in assembly scenarios. Finally, the case study results show that magnetic-based systems outperform others in construction scenarios. Lastly, the snap-to-fit function was validated in terms of accuracy and time performance.
