Optical and Mechanical Designs of the Multi-band SWIR Receiver for the Lunar Flashlight CubeSat Mission

Mapping and quantifying lunar water ice addresses one of NASA’s Strategic Knowledge Gaps to understand the lunar resource potential for future human exploration of the Moon. Lunar Flashlight is an innovative NASA CubeSat mission dedicated to mapping water ice in the permanently-shadowed and occasionally-sunlit regions in the vicinity of the lunar South Pole. Lunar Flashlight will acquire these measurements from lunar orbit using a multi-band laser reflectometer composed of an optical receiver aligned with four lasers emitting different wavelengths in the shortwave infrared spectral region between 1 µm and 2 µm. The receiver measures the laser radiance reflected from the lunar surface in each spectral band and continuum/absorption reflectance band ratios are then analyzed to quantify water ice concentration in the illuminated spot. The receiver utilizes a 70×70-mm, aluminum, off-axis paraboloidal mirror with a focal length of 70 mm, which collects the incoming light onto a single, 2 mm diameter InGaAs detector with a cutoff wavelength of 2.4 µm. We present the optical and mechanical designs of the receiver, including its optimization for rejection of solar stray-light from outside its intended field of view. This highly mass- and volume-constrained instrument payload will demonstrate several firsts, including being one of the first instruments onboard a CubeSat performing science measurements beyond low Earth orbit and the first planetary mission to use multi-band active reflectometry from orbit.

C30665L CD3740 Displacement Damage and Total Ionizing Dose Test Report

The purpose of this testing is to provide preliminary characterization of the displacement damage and total ionizing dose effects via 63 MeV protons on InGaAs PIN photodiodes fabricated and assembled by Excelitas for use in a LIDAR system. The testing is being conducted to determine the susceptibility of the component to the radiation environment that it will be exposed to during mission duration.

Generation and enhancement of surface acoustic waves on a highly doped p-type III-V semiconductor substrate

A device employing the generation and enhancement of surface acoustic waves on a highly doped p-type III-V semiconductor substrate (e.g., GaAs, GaSb, InAs, or InGaAs). The device includes two SiO 2 /ZnO islands, each including a SiO 2 buffer layer deposited on the doped p-type III-V semiconductor substrate and a ZnO layer deposited on the SiO 2 buffer layer. An input interdigital transducers (IDT) and an output IDT are each patterned on one of the SiO 2 /ZnO islands. The IDTs generates surface acoustic waves along an exposed surface of the highly doped p-type III-V semiconductor substrate. The surface acoustic waves improve the photoelectric and photovoltaic properties of the device. The device is manufactured using a disclosed technique for propagating strong surface acoustic waves on weak piezoelectric materials. Also disclosed is a photodetector developed using that technique.

A 40 Gbps Optical Transceiver for Particle Physics Experiments

We present the design and the test results of a quad-channel optical transceiver module (QTRx) possibly for future particle physics experiments. The transmitters of QTRx, each at 10 Gbps, are based on a Quad-channel VCSEL Diode array Driver (QLDD) and 1 x 4 VCSEL array. The receivers of QTRx, with data rates of 2.56 Gbps or 10 Gbps per channel, are based on a Quad-channel Trans-Impedance and limiting Amplifier (QTIA) and 1 x 4 photodiode array of GaAs or InGaAs. QTRx is 20 mm x 10 mm x 5 mm and couples to an MT fiber connector. Test results indicate that QTRx achieves the design goals with a power consumption of 124 mW per transmitter channel at 10 Gbps and 120 mW at 2.56 Gbps for the receiver channel with an on-chip charge pump. The sensitivities of QTIA are -17 dBm at 2.56 Gbps and -8 dBm at 10 Gbps, respectively. Further improvements with a gold-finger interface and a more compact optical lens are being designed.

JISEA Annual Meeting: Clean Energy for Oil and Gas Topic Table

Presentation on clean energy for oil and gas topic discussion table at the 2022 JISEA annual meeting. Many refineries may have wind and solar resources and clean energy technology costs are declining. JISEA created an oil and gas consortium including Baker Hughes, Conoco Phillips, Extraction Oil & Gas, INGAA Foundation, and Kinder Morgan to explore potential pathways for integrating clean energy into oil and gas operations. This presentation goes over JISEA case studies that demonstrate reliable and affordable clean power for oil and gas operations. JISEA used the REopt Energy Planning Platform and evaluated several potential future scenarios.

Monolithically Integrated $\varepsilon$-Ge/In x Ga 1-x As Quantum Well Laser Design: Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

Here, we have analyzed the electrical and optical phenomenon occurring in a $\varepsilon$-Ge/In x Ga 1-x -Ge/In x Ga 1-x As quantum well (QW) laser through self-consistent physical solvers calibrated using in-house experimental results. A separate confinement heterostructure QW design is proposed to enable lasing from tensile strained germanium ($\varepsilon$-Ge/In x Ga 1-x -Ge) in the range of 1.55 um to 4 um wavelengths as a function of QW thickness and indium (In) composition. Different recombination mechanisms were analyzed as a function of tensile strain in $\varepsilon$-Ge/In x Ga 1-x -Ge QW. Minority carrier lifetime and band alignment are key attributes of a QW laser, which were measured using microwave photoconductive decay and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (as a function of In composition), respectively. The transition point of Ge to a direct bandgap material is re-affirmed to be at $\varepsilon$-Ge/In x Ga 1-x = 1.6% (In ~24%) and the transition from type I to type II for $\varepsilon$-Ge/In x Ga 1-x -Ge/In x Ga 1-x As QW is found to be at In ~55%. Also, the transition to a TM mode dominant laser is identified at In ~15%. Using a tunable waveguide design to optimize confinement as a function of In composition, strain, wavelength, QW thickness, refractive index, and geometry, the $\varepsilon$-Ge/In x Ga 1-x -Ge QW laser design provided a net material gain of ~2000 cm -1 and a threshold current density of ~5 kA/cm 2 , which is an improvement over existing Ge based lasers. In conclusion, the impact of In composition and QW thickness on the band structure, polarized gain spectra, and various lasing metrics were analyzed to show $\varepsilon$-Ge/In x Ga 1-x -Ge/InGaAs QW lasers as promising for integrated photonics.

Platform for Accurate Efficiency Quantification of > 35% Efficient Thermophotovoltaic Cells

Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) devices convert thermal radiation directly into electricity using semiconductor diodes and have a variety of uses from waste heat recovery to energy storage to primary power conversion. Recent results have demonstrated promising cells nearing and surpassing 30% conversion efficiency. As TPV cells continue to increase in efficiency, they become attractive for a wider range of applications. Their efficiencies must be quantified in a standardized fashion to compare results accurately across research groups. Here, we outline and quantify the most important characteristics of an accurate and precise TPV efficiency measurement. Using a custom-built measurement apparatus that takes these characteristics into account, we report 19 cells with greater than 30% conversion efficiency and 2 cells with greater than 35% conversion efficiency. This confirms that our reported cell efficiencies are not simply those of hero cells but rather of a distribution of cells that can be produced in a consistent, high-quality process.
