Introduction to the Consortium for Monitoring, Technology, and Verification (MTV) [Slides]

Our mission is to develop new technologies that detect and deter nuclear proliferation activities while training the next generation of nuclear professionals. The three technical thrust areas are: 1. Fundamentals of nuclear and particle physics, 2. Signals and source terms for nuclear nonproliferation, and 3. Nuclear explosion. There are opportunities for collaborations with university faculty, possible student and post-doc work, and posting job ads. Further, MTV hosts various workshops, symposiums.

An introduction to neuromorphic computing and its potential impact for unattended ground sensors

Neuromorphic computers are hardware systems that mimic the brain’s computational process phenomenology. This is in contrast to neural network accelerators, such as the Google TPU or the Intel Neural Compute Stick, which seek to accelerate the fundamental computation and data flows of neural network models used in the field of machine learning. Neuromorphic computers emulate the integrate and fire neuron dynamics of the brain to achieve a spiking communication architecture for computation. While neural networks are brain-inspired, they drastically oversimplify the brain’s computation model. Neuromorphic architectures are closer to the true computation model of the brain (albeit, still simplified). Neuromorphic computing models herald a 1000x power improvement over conventional CPU architectures. Sandia National Labs is a major contributor to the research community on neuromorphic systems by performing design analysis, evaluation, and algorithm development for neuromorphic computers. Space-based remote sensing development has been a focused target of funding for exploratory research into neuromorphic systems for their potential advantage in that program area; SNL has led some of these efforts. Recently, neuromorphic application evaluation has reached the NA-22 program area. This same exploratory research and algorithm development should penetrate the unattended ground sensor space for SNL’s mission partners and program areas. Neuromorphic computing paradigms offer a distinct advantage for the SWaP-constrained embedded systems of our diverse sponsor-driven program areas.

Brief Introduction to Gamma Spectroscopy [Slides]

Radiation energy is measured in units of electron volts (eV). Photon energies are like a fingerprint that allow us to identify specific radioisotopes. Radiation interacts with our detector & deposits energy. That deposited energy produces a proportional signal. Signals are sorted and analyzed. Signals are placed in a histogram, making a gamma spectrum. Analyze gamma spectrum and identify the radioactive material.

An Introduction to Los Alamos National Laboratory [Slides]

The Weapon Systems Engineering Division (W) provides the system engineering and program management necessary to sustain the safety, reliability, and security of the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s assets in the active United States nuclear stockpile - the B61, W76, W78 and W88. The Division generates key certification data for Annual Assessment supporting the Laboratory Director's letter to the President on the health of those warheads. This role demands ongoing surveillance of the active stockpile and evaluation of the potential impact of any issues through design, engineering, fabrication, testing using state-of-the-art computational simulation tools and engineering test facilities. The Division works in close liaison with the several production facilities across the nuclear security complex as well as with the customers in the US Navy and Air Force.

A quick introduction to linear transport phenomena

The goal of this report is to provide an introductory-level overview of the linear Boltzmann equation in the context of neutron transport. After deriving the transport equation, we discuss some of its basic applications in reactor theory. Finally, we review several simplifying approximations of the linearized Boltzmann equation that are essential to solving it in many applications. Although the context of neutron transport is called upon to add concreteness to our discussion, many of the concepts and approximations that we discuss remain relevant in other many other phenomena.

8 Ft Vessel Refinishing Contract Introduction [Slides]

LANL utilizes spherical vessels for numerous basic science, materials, and system performance experiments. The 8 ft vessel was fabricated in the early 2000s to ASME B&PVC Section VIII Division 1 using HSLA-100 material. This vessel was not used operationally due to programmatic change in direction. Years of improper maintenance and storage has resulted in deterioration of sealing surfaces and bolt hole threads. New mission needs call for expanded capabilities in terms of vessel sizes, therefore refinishing the 8ft vessel is crucial.

Introduction to Carbon Sensing in Soil. A surface-level review of traditional and alternative methods of soil carbon measurement

Soil carbon can be divided into two categories: organic and inorganic. Soil inorganic carbon (SIC) is present in carbonate minerals in the soil and is often found in dry, arid regions. Examples of SIC include calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO 3 ), both of which play important roles in soil health. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is found in fresh plant matter (available SOC) and as humus or charcoal (inert SOC). Both types of carbon act as storage in the global carbon cycle. As a carbon sink, soil carbon has the potential to store carbon that would otherwise remain in the atmosphere as CO 2 , one of the primary greenhouse emissions. As such, soil is under increasing attention and research to be used as a sequestration (i.e., isolation) method to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. This type of carbon sequestration is called biological sequestration. SOC typically stores carbon for several decades (depending on decomposition rates) while SIC can store carbon for more than 70,000 years. Common sequestration techniques for SOC usually fall under the category of land management: planting perennials, keeping plant residue and composting, reducing tilling, and other agricultural practices that vary by region. SIC sequestration through carbonates naturally takes thousands of years but there have been studies to increase SIC sequestration through the addition of silicates.
