Materials processing in space - A strategy for commercialization

Major aerospace companies are talking about space factories manufacturing billions of dollars worth of high technology materials per year. On the other hand, a recent National Academy of Sciences study team saw little prospect for space manufacturing because, in their opinion, most of the disturbing effects of gravity in the processes they considered could be overcome on the ground for much less expenditure. This paper presents a current assessment of the problems and promises of the Materials Processing in Space Program and outlines a strategy for developing the first products of commercial value. These early products are expected to serve as paradigms of what can be accomplished by manufacturing in space and should stimulate industry to develop space manufacturing to whatever degree is economically justifiable.

The velocity dispersion in Saturn's rings

The collisional dynamics of a differentially rotating disk of particles are considered. The investigation is to some extent an analytic counterpart of the numerical studies of Brahic (1977). Following Brahic, it is assumed that the particles are identical, indestructible, imperfectly elastic, smooth spheres. Gravitational interactions between the particles are neglected. The main result of the reported analysis is the derivation of the relation between the coefficient of restitution and the optical depth for a differentially rotating disk of identical, inelastic, smooth spheres. Questions concerning the applicability of the obtained results to Saturn's rings are studied. It is felt that the calculations should give accurate quantitative results if the rings' filling factor is small. If this assumption is not justified, the calculations should be at least qualitatively correct.

Orbiting Deep Space Relay Station (ODSRS): DSN feasibility study report

Future tracking requirements and advantages over earth based stations justify the design of an orbiting, free flying very long base interferometry system to provide high resolution maps of celestial radio sources. Moderate technology development is required for the following: 30 meter to 60 meter diameter deployable parabolic antennas with less than 2 millimeters surface tolerance; a momentum wheel attitude control system with few arc/second accuracy; solar power design; a hydrogen maser atomic frequency standard; and the cryogenic receivers. The system must meet current Deep Space tracking capabilities as a minimum, and the technology must be compatible with system performance growth in the future. System lifetime must be ten years without major refurbishing.

Recommendations

Significant progress was made in the development of remote sensing techniques for estimating soil moisture, and some useful applications for soil moisture information was demonstrated. However, there is an array of questions that must be answered before an operational program is appropriate. A substantial research-oriented program is justified. A summary of recommendations made by participants in the workshop concerning future research and development is presented. These recommendations represent a consensus of opinions from the Workshop participants, but are not necessarily unanimous views.

Atmospheric disturbance modelling requirements for flying qualities applications

Flying qualities are defined as those airplane characteristics which govern the ease or precision with which the pilot can accomplish the mission. Some atmospheric disturbance modelling requirements for aircraft flying qualities applications are reviewed. It is concluded that some simplifications are justified in identifying the primary influence on aircraft response and pilot control. It is recommended that a universal environmental model be developed, which could form the reference for different applications. This model should include the latest information on winds, turbulence, gusts, visibility, icing and precipitation. A chosen model would be kept by a national agency and updated regularly by feedback from users. A user manual is believed to be an essential part of such a model.

A new basis for the determination of fracture toughness

A study is presented which shows that the growth of the plastic zone and the constraint in a compact tension specimen depends significantly on specimen width. The analysis permits the estimation of the contribution of the growth of plastic zone to the deviation from linearity. The contribution of the crack growth to the deviation from linearity is evaluated from the analysis of a typical R-curve data. A combination of these two analyses enables one to define a very simple procedure for the determination of fracture toughness. The fracture toughness is defined as the stress intensity value at which the crack extension starts. The good agreement between analytical results and experimental KQ and KIC values determined over a wide range of thicknesses, widths, and materials justifies the proposed procedures. The KIC determined according to this procedure is independent of specimen width and such a procedure enhances the range of applicability of the K concept to a wider combination of configurations and materials.

Modeling of premixing-prevaporizing fuel-air mixing passages

The development of a computer program for the analytical prediction of the distribution of liquid and vapor fuel in the premixing-prevaporizing passage by the direct injection method is described. The technical approach adopted for this program is to separate the problem into three parts each with its own computer code. These three parts are: calculation of the two-dimensional or axisymmetric air flow; calculation of the three-dimensional fuel droplet evaporation; and calculation of the fuel vapor diffusion. This method of approach is justified because premixing passages operate at lean equivalence ratios. Hence, a weak interaction assumption can be made wherein the airflow can affect the fuel droplet behavior but the fuel droplet behavior does not affect the airflow.

Natural resources inventory system ASVT project

The author has identified the following significant results. One of the main advantages, both cost-wise and time-wise, of the natural resource inventory system involved the use of LANDSAT-acquired digital data for the land cover information component; thereby, eliminating the need to digitize such dynamic information from a map or aerial photo base. It was thought that the utility and the cost of information as derived from LANDSAT data for the various applications justified the operational use of data generated by LANDSAT.

A study of course deviations during cross-country soaring

Several models are developed for studying the impact of deviations from course during cross country soaring flights. Analyses are performed at the microstrategy and macrostrategy levels. Two types of lift sources are considered: concentrated thermals and thermal streets. The sensitivity of the optimum speed solutions to various model, piloting and performance parameters is evaluated. Guides are presented to provide the pilot with criterions for making in-flight decisions. In general, course deviations are warranted during weak lift conditions, but are less justifiable with moderate to strong lift conditions.

Feature selection via entropy minimization: An example using LANDSAT satellite data

The author has identified the following significant results. The minimum entropy model may provide several useful advantages over traditional techniques for processing LANDSAT data. Total computer time to conduct a complete pattern recognition process is reduced. Subjective (transformed image), as well as statistically derived information is made available to the analyst/user much earlier in the analysis process. A rapid feedback loop in which numerous training set combinations can be tested for difference and representativeness is available. Additional tests of LANDSAT data processing using the minimum entropy model are clearly justified.

Evaluation of a new concept for reducing free-stream turbulence in wind tunnels

The feasibility of using a 45 deg-honeycomb for improving the flow quality in wind tunnels was investigated. The results of the experiments indicate that the turbulence levels in a wind tunnel using the 45 deg-honeycomb would be comparable to those obtainable using a conventional honeycomb, i.e., a honeycomb which is positioned normal to the mean flow in the settling chamber. However, this is true only when a 45 deg-screen is mounted immediately downstream of the honeycomb, and when some distance is provided between the trailing edges of the corner turning vanes and the upstream side of the 45 deg-honeycomb. This distance is required for adequate decay of the turning-vane wakes, thereby providing a reasonably uniform mean flow entering the honeycomb. Results demonstrate that this distance should be at least twice the spacing between the turning vanes. Even though the resulting turbulence intensity is the same downstream of both the 45 deg-honeycomb and the conventional honeycomb, there would have to be a significant improvement in the test-section turbulence intensity using the 45 deg-honeycomb to justify the additional expense in fabricating and installing this type of honeycomb.

World helicopter market study

The extent of the threat to the US helicopter industry posed by a determined effort by foreign manufacturers, European companies in particular, to supply their own domestic markets and also to penetrate export markets, including the USA is assessed. Available data on US and world markets for civil and military uses are collated and presented in both graphic and tabular form showing the past history of production and markets and, where forecasts are available, anticipated future trends. The data are discussed on an item-by-item basis and inferences are drawn in as much depth as appears justified.

20/30 GHz satellite systems technology needs assessment

The paper surveys the system and market work done at NASA-Lewis with regard to exploring the potential of the 20/30 GHz bands for domestic satellite communications. The 20/30 GHz bands appear attractive economically and, with certain technology advances, appear to offer a virtually unlimited spectrum resource. This attractiveness is especially relevant to high density trunking where there is sufficient traffic to justify dual-station site diversity. Ongoing system and market studies actively involve satellite system suppliers and carriers as well as the government in a cooperative, mutually beneficial effort. It is considered that this is the approach most likely to result in a spectrum-efficient acceptable-risk high-capacity 30/30 GHz satellite system which is relevant to anticipated markets.

Molecular collisions in a laser field - Effect of the laser linewidth

The effect of the laser linewidth on molecular collision processes taking place in a laser field is studied, using an approximation scheme that replaces the actual frequency distribution of the field by a finite number of frequencies and weights. The choice of the frequencies and weights is conveniently accomplished by the method of Gaussian quadrature. Close-coupling calculations are performed on model systems, and the results indicate that the neglect of the laser linewidth may be justified in most collision processes in a laser field.

Developing closed life support systems for large space habitats

In anticipation of possible large-scale, long-duration space missions which may be conducted in the future, NASA has begun to investigate the research and technology development requirements to create life support systems for large space habitats. An analysis suggests the feasibility of a regeneration of food in missions which exceed four years duration. Regeneration of food in space may be justified for missions of shorter duration when large crews must be supported at remote sites such as lunar bases and space manufacturing facilities. It is thought that biological components consisting principally of traditional crop and livestock species will prove to be the most acceptable means of closing the food cycle. A description is presented of the preliminary results of a study of potential biological components for large space habitats. Attention is given to controlled ecosystems, Russian life support system research, controlled-environment agriculture, and the social aspects of the life-support system.

Technology requirements for an orbital navigation/position finding system

The concept of an orbiting personal navigation system as a possible application for a large space structure is considered. The navigation system would have to be part of a large, integrated, multifunction Information Service Platform to justify its complexity and assured use by a large segment of the civilian population. The navigation configuration is a large cruciform which utilizes a linear phased array antenna design. The two antenna arms generate narrow, orthogonal beam patterns on the ground which are electrically scanned east to west and south to north. A passive ground receiver detecting the beam passage determines the user's position in earth longitude and latitude coordinates.
