A curve-fitting technique for the determination of gain and saturation intensity in homogeneously-broadened gas lasers: Application to a waveguide CO2 laser

A least squares curve-fitting algorithm is derived which allows the simultaneous estimation of the small signal gain and the saturation intensity from an arbitrary number of data points relating power output to the incidence angle of an internal coupling plate. The method is used to study the dependence of the two parameters on tube pressure and discharge current in a waveguide CO2 laser having a 2 mm diameter capillary. It is found that, at pressures greater than 28 torr, rising CO2 temperature degrades the small signal gain at current levels as low as three milliamperes.

Remote measurement utilizing NASA's scanning laser Doppler systems. Volume 1. Laser Doppler wake vortex tracking at Kennedy Airport

Test operations of the Scanning Laser Doppler System (SLDS) at Kennedy International Airport (KIA) during August 1974 through June 1975 are reported. A total of 1,619 data runs was recorded with a totally operational system during normal landing operations at KIA. In addition, 53 data runs were made during cooperative flybys with the C880 for a grand total of 1672 recorded vortex tracks. Test crews were in attendance at KIA for 31 weeks, of which 25 weeks were considered operational and the other six were packing, unpacking, setup and check out. Although average activity equates to 67 recorded landing operations per week, two periods of complete runway inactivity spanned 20 days and 13 days, respectively. The operation frequency therefore averaged about 88 operations per week.

High-precision laser distance measurement in support of lunar laser ranging at Haleakala, Maui, 1976-1977

The Hawaii Institute of Geophysics has implemented a comprehensive geodetic-geophysical support program to monitor local and regional crustal deformation on the island of Maui. Presented are the actual laser-measured line lengths and new coordinate computations of the line terminals, and the internal consistency of the measured line lengths is discussed. Several spacial chord lengths have been reduced to a Mercator plane, and conditioned adjustments on that plane have been made.

Discovery of natural gain amplification in the 10 muon m CO2 laser bands on Mars: The first definite natural laser

Fully resolved intensity profiles of various lines in the CO2 bands at 9.4 micrometers and 10.4 micrometers were measured on Mars using an infrared heterodyne spectrometer. Analysis of the line shapes shows that the Mars atmosphere exhibits positive gain on these lines, providing the first definite detection of natural optical gain amplification and enabling identification of these lines as the first definite natural laser ever discovered.

Lead salt diode lasers and development of tunable solid state lasers for remote sensing

Extensive studies of the output characteristics of single quantum well lead-telluride lasers developed at the General Motors Research Laboratories were carried out. Threshold currents, output powers and line structures were measured as a function of temperature. Very low-current lasing thresholds, record high operating temperatures and over 30% tuning ranges were achieved. Excellent reproducibilities, good far-field patterns and reasonable linewidths (approx. 500 kHz) were found.

In situ stratospheric measurements of HNO3 and HCl near 30 km using the balloon-borne laser in situ sensor tunable diode laser spectrometer

In situ stratospheric measurements of the concentrations of the reservoir species HNO3 and HCl made during two flights of the high-resolution (0.0005/cm) balloon-borne laser in situ sensor instrument from Palestine, Texas, are reported. A measured HNO3 volume mixing ratio of 4.3 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) at 31 km altitude is about 1 ppbv larger than previously reported measurements at 32 deg N. An HCl mixing ratio of 1.6 ppbv at 29 km is in agreement with values obtained from earlier remote sensing techniques within the experimental uncertainties. Upper limits at 31 km of 0.4 ppbv for H2O2 and 0.2 ppbv for HOCl are also derived from analyses of spectra recorded near 1252/cm.

Receiver design, performance analysis, and evaluation for space-borne laser altimeters and space-to-space laser ranging systems

This interim report consists of two reports: 'Space Radiation Effects on Si APDs for GLAS' and 'Computer Simulation of Avalanche Photodiode and Preamplifier Output for Laser Altimeters.' The former contains a detailed description of our proton radiation test of Si APD's performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The latter documents the computer program subroutines which were written for the upgrade of NASA's GLAS simulator.

Laser Doppler velocimeter measurements and laser sheet imaging in an annular combustor model

An experimental study was conducted in annular combustor model to provide a better understanding of the flowfield. Combustor model configurations consisting of primary jets only, annular jets only, and a combination of annular and primary jets were investigated. The purpose of this research was to provide a better understanding of combustor flows and to provide a data base for comparison with computational models. The first part of this research used a laser Doppler velocimeter to measure mean velocity and statistically calculate root-mean-square velocity in two coordinate directions. From this data, one Reynolds shear stress component and a two-dimensional turbulent kinetic energy term was determined. Major features of the flowfield included recirculating flow, primary and annular jet interaction, and high turbulence. The most pronounced result from this data was the effect the primary jets had on the flowfield. The primary jets were seen to reduce flow asymmetries, create larger recirculation zones, and higher turbulence levels. The second part of this research used a technique called marker nephelometry to provide mean concentration values in the combustor. Results showed the flow to be very turbulent and unsteady. All configurations investigated were highly sensitive to alignment of the primary and annular jets in the model and inlet conditions. Any imbalance between primary jets or misalignment of the annular jets caused severe flow asymmetries.

Near-Infrared Laser Pumped Intersubband THz Laser Gain in InGaAs-AlAsSb-InP Quantum Wells

We investigate the possibility of using InGaAs-AlAsSb-InP coupled quantum wells to generate THz radiation by means of intersubband optical pumping. We show that large conduction band offsets of these quantum wells make it possible to use conventional near-infrared diode lasers around 1.55 micron as pump sources. Taking into account the pump-probe coherent interaction and the optical nonlinearity for the pump field, we calculate the THz gain of the quantum well structure. We show that resonant Raman scattering enhances the THz gain at low and moderate optical pumping levels. When the pump intensity is strong, the THz gain is reduced by pump-induced population redistribution and pump-probe coherent interactions.

The Effect of Laser Scan Strategy on Distortion and Residual Stresses of Arches Made With Selective Laser Melting

The NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is developing Additive Manufacturing (AM) - both in-space AM for on-demand parts, tools, or structures, and on-earth AM for rapid, reduced-cost, small volume production of complex space-flight hardware. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is an on-earth AM technology that MSFC is using to build Alloy 718 rocket engine components. An understanding of the SLM-718 material properties is required to design, build, and qualify these components for space flight. Residual stresses and are of particular interest for this AM process, since SLM is a series of approximately 100 micron-wide welds, where highly non-linear heating and cooling, severe thermal gradients and repeated thermal cycling can result in high residual stresses within the component. These stresses may cause degraded material properties, and warp or distort the geometry of the SLM component. The distortions can render the component out-of-tolerance when inspected, and even interrupt or halt the build process if the warped material prevents the SLM machine from operating properly. The component must be scrapped and re-designed, which is time consuming and costly. If residual stresses are better understood, and can be predicted, these effects can be mitigated early in the component's design. the compressive residual stresses in the z-direction were highest in the chess sample, followed by island then continuous. This may be due to the binding nature of the segments
