Safety moments in chemical safety education.

Chemical safety education is a critical aspect of an integrated culture of safety in academic research settings. Showcasing best practices and sharing practical solutions for recognizing hazards and minimizing risks represent one way of reinforcing a research community's actions, attitudes, and behavior toward safety. For goals of improving chemical safety education with nonformal endeavors, safety moments are similar to 1-2 slides that focus on raising awareness and knowledge for routine safety issues in research laboratories. Intended to catalyze brief discussions at the beginning of meetings and presentations, these materials provide a proactive way for students and faculty to engage in open communication on diverse research safety topics across science and engineering. This commentary provides an overview of designing effective safety moments and tailoring them to highlight practical safety needs and considerations. Key components of model safety moment slides are presented, alongside centralized resources assembled by student-led laboratory safety teams, which can also be extended to posters, social media platforms, online videos, and other forms of scientific communication. Combined with both top-down backing from institution leaders and bottom-up support from student researchers, safety moments remain a low-barrier risk reduction strategy that is easy to implement, encourages local dialogue on safety, combats complacency, and holds potential for facilitating long-term improvements to academic lab safety culture.

Optical Imaging on Z LDRD: Design and Development of Self-Emission and Debris Imagers

We present an overview of the design and development of optical self-emission and debris imaging diagnostics for the Z Machine at Sandia National Laboratories. These diagnostics were designed and implemented to address several gaps in our understanding of visibly emitting phenomenon on Z and the post-shot debris environment. Optical emission arises from plasmas that form on the transmission line that delivers energy to Z loads and on the Z targets themselves; however, the dynamics of these plasmas are difficult to assess without imaging data. Addressing this, we developed a new optical imager called SEGOI (Self-Emission Gated Optical Imager) that leverages the eight gated optical imagers and two streak cameras of the Z Line VISAR system. SEGOI is a low cost, side-on imager with a 1 cm field of view and 30-50 µm spatial resolution, sensitive to green light (540-600 nm). This report outlines the design considerations and development of this diagnostic and presents an overview of the first diagnostic data acquired from four experimental campaigns. SEGOI was fielded on power flow experiments to image plasmas forming on and between transmission lines, on an inertial confinement fusion experiment called the Dynamic Screw Pinch to image low density plasmas forming on return current posts, on an experiment designed to measure the magneto Rayleigh-Taylor instability to image the instability bubble trajectory and self-emission structures, and finally on a Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) experiment to image the emission from the target. The second diagnostic developed, called DINGOZ (Debris ImagiNG on Z), was designed to improve our understanding of the post-shot debris environment. DINGOZ is an airtight enclosure that houses electronics and batteries to operate a high-speed (10-400 kfps) camera in the Z Machine center section. We report on the design considerations of this new diagnostic and present the first high-speed imaging data of the post-shot debris environment on Z.

The ePIC dual-radiator RICH detector

The dual radiator Ring Imaging Cherenkov (dRICH) detector is required to provide continuous hadron identification from ≈3 GeV/c up to ≈50 GeV/c, and to supplement electron and positron identification from a few hundred MeV/c up to about 15 GeV/c, in the forward (ion-side) end-cap of the ePIC experiment. Such an extended momentum range imposes the use of two radiators, gas and aerogel. The common imaging system, that ensures compactness and cost-effectiveness, is based on SiPM sensors to work in a high non-uniform magnetic field. During the R&D phase, the dual radiator principle and the single component performance have been validated. A status overview of the project is presented. The design and technological choices are discussed together with the results obtained from laboratory characterization of the component demonstrators and beam tests of the evolving prototypes.

Radiation Chemistry Research for Improved Nuclear Fuel Cycles

Nuclear energy is a key component of a global, low-carbon energy future. One of the challenges facing large-scale deployment of nuclear power is the long-term disposition of used nuclear fuel. Due to the political and technical challenges of siting deep geologic storage facilities, reprocessing of used nuclear fuel is desirable to reduce the total volume and decay heat of waste requiring long-term storage, enabling efficient usage of geologic storage repositories. However nuclear fuel reprocessing is complicated by intense multi-component radiation fields that degrade solvent systems that are used for this purpose. Resulting radiolytic degradation can result in reduced performance over time, and generation of additional waste. Thus, an understanding of the radiation-induced chemistry of these reprocessing solvent systems is crucial to for the development of new, radiation-resistant processes for efficiently treating used nuclear fuel. Controlled irradiation experiments combined with high-performance chromatography and mass spectrometry have provided comprehensive knowledge of radiolytic degradation pathways and kinetics, which is needed to predict the effect of radiation-induced chemistry on the performance of the nuclear fuel reprocessing technology. This talk will give an overview of recent progress in research on the radiation chemistry of fuel reprocessing molecules conducted by the Idaho National Laboratory Center for Radiation Chemistry Research (CR2) in conjunction with the Molecular Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography group.

Board 160: Empowerment in STEM Day: Introducing High School Girls to Careers at National Laboratories (Work in Progress)

In the US, women are still vastly underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers, and various studies have shown that girls' interest in STEM careers wane as high school progresses. With this challenge in mind, Empowerment in STEM Day was organized by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), hosting 47 high school students from 6 public high schools in the area. This one-day event was designed and executed through a collaboration between the Women's Support and Empowerment Council (WSEC) and the K-12 STEM Education and Outreach Program at LBNL. The main goal of this program was to provide high school girls, who have little access to STEM career role-models in their immediate surroundings with insights into how a career in STEM looks like. Invitations to participate in the program were sent out to six local high schools in the Bay area asking educators to identify female students that were interested in STEM. Each high school participant was provided with an opportunity to experience a national laboratory environment, learn more about summer workshops and paid summer research internship opportunities at LBNL for high school students, and engage directly with LBNL's employees through job shadow, career mapping and speed networking sessions. In this paper, we will present an overview of the event organization, challenges faced during planning and execution of the event, discuss the lessons learned from the first Empowerment in STEM Day and suggest strategies for incorporating such events at other national laboratories and academic institutions as part of a vital effort into recruiting and retaining more high school girls in STEM-based careers. Additionally, since this was the first in-person event hosted by LBNL's K-12 Program after the pandemic, we will also share the strategies implemented at the event so as to engage both remote and on-site employees as volunteers.
