Ultra-narrow-linewidth hybrid-integrated self-injection locked laser at 780 nm

Narrow-linewidth lasers are essential across a wide range of applications, including classical and quantum sensing, trapped ion systems, position/navigation/timing systems, optical clocks, and microwave frequency synthesizers. In the visible and near-visible spectrum, low-noise lasers are particularly important for laser trapping and cooling techniques, which are vital for trapped ion quantum computing, sensing, and atomic clocks. In this context, our work showcases a hybrid-integrated narrow-linewidth laser that operates at 780 nm, achieving a self-heterodyne linewidth of 105 Hz. To validate the experimental results, we performed a numerical analysis that combines insights from a many-body theory applied to the gain region with a travelling-wave model to capture the laser dynamics. Our investigation further delves into how the linewidth of the self-injection locked lasers is influenced by the parameters of micro-ring resonators, aiming to assess the potential for achieving Hz-level integrated laser linewidths at 780 nm. This work not only demonstrates the technical feasibility of Hz-level narrow-linewidth lasers but also lays the groundwork for future explorations in the field.

Testing a Hazmatpac Can with Locking Ring as a Secondary Shipping Container for Radium-224/Lead-212 Generators

A Hazmatpac can, paint can style shipping container with locking ring, was tested for use as an alternative shipping configuration for shipment of radium- 224 /lead- 212 generators. 224 Ra ( t 1/2 = 3.63 d) decays by alpha emission to radon-220 ( t 1/2 = 55.6 s). The potential for the radioactive radon gas to escape the generator column and the shipping container is of particular concern for the safe delivery of 224 Ra/ 212 Pb generators to customers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the Hazmatpac can is a suitable shipping configuration, capable of containing the radon gas that may escape the generator column during transit. A 17.3 mCi 224 Ra/ 212 Pb generator was built and packaged into a Hazmatpac can. The can was smeared by a Radiological Control Technician (RCT) every day for seven days to analyze for radioactive contamination on the outside of the can. Over the course of the study, no radioactive contamination was found on the outside of the can. Therefore, the Hazmatpac can was approved as an alternative shipping configuration for shipment of 224 Ra/ 212 Pb generators.

Coiled spring makes self-locking device for threaded fasteners

Coiled spring device provides both easy self-locking and disassembly for screw-threaded fasteners. When the fastener turns in one direction the spring grips one of the fastener threads and releases when the fastener turns in the opposite direction.

A Threshold Theory for Phase-Locked Loops

A model of a phase-locked loop has been developed which is valid for all signal-to-noise ratios. The model is in the form of a nonlinear feedback system with randomly time-varying parameters. The analysis considers two operating regions. In low signal-to-noise ratio regions, the important consideration is stability. We want to study the asymptotic stability in the mean of a nonlinear system. It follows directly that a necessary condition for asymptotic stability of any nonlinear system is that a linearized model about some equilibrium point be asymptotically stable. By considering all possible equilibrium points, we can find an upper bound on the value of noise density which makes the system unstable. This upper bound represents a threshold value for system operation. In high signal-to-noise ratio regions, our results provide an exact statistical. description of system behavior. Therefore, knowledge of the spectrum of the signal and noise may be used to optimize the system configuration.

Electronic phase-locked-loop speed control system is stable

Phase locked-loop circuit is used for playback motors in digital tape recorders where the reproducer output remains in exact synchronism with an external reference clock over extended periods. It removes the motor dynamics from the control loop so that the loop is stable without damping.

An investigation of phase-lock loop swept- frequency synchronization

Rapid synchronization of phase-locked oscillators is best achieved by the swept-frequency acquisition technique, wherein the voltage-controlled oscillator /VCO/ is linearly swept through the uncertainty band. The theoretically predicted sweep rates of this technique and the observed experimental results differ by less than seven percent.

Adjustable, self-locking ladder includes optional work platform

Height-adjustable ladder with a self-locking platform at its top makes elevated locations more accessible, increases the quantity and size of tools handled there, and decreases the risk of disturbance or damage to components. The retractable platform adapts the ladder to normal use.
