Effect of Ar Post-irradiations on Magnetic Properties of Cu-Implanted ZnO Single Crystals

Ar{sup +} post-irradiation effects on magnetic behavior of Cu{sup +}-implanted ZnO single crystals were studied. It was found that Cu{sup +}-implanted and Ar{sup +}-irradiated samples, even the primary sample, showed a magnetic moment (M{sub M}), but the saturation magnetization (M{sub S}) of Ar{sup +} post-irradiated on Cu{sup +} as-implanted one drastically decreased. Based on the first-principle method, it was drawn to the incomplete filling electronic configuration of the substituted Cu ion whose 3d orbital hybridized with O-2p contributing to the magnetism. The M{sub M} induced by the substituted Cu{sup +} ion was much less than that induced by the substituted Cu{sup 2+} and Cu{sup 3+} ion, so the ratio of Cu{sup 2+,3+}/Cu{sup +} decreased after Ar{sup +} post-irradiation, leading to the decrease of M{sub S}. The excessive concentration of O vacancy induced by post-irradiation also weakened the M{sub M} by their compensating electrons, and decreased the effective magnetic exchange coupling interaction. Cu-related clusters dissolution was also a critical reason for the reduction of M{sub S}.

Effect of Zn, Ga and Gd Doping on Structural and Magnetic Properties of Nanonickel Ferrite Prepared by Two Different Methods

Zn/Ga/Gd-substituted NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} was formed by solid state reaction and citrate methods. The influence of substitutions on phase formation, the strain, crystallize size, cations distribution and magnetic properties have been examined by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer effect spectrometer, Fourier-transform infrared, and vibrating sample magnetometer. Zn/Ga/Gd substituted NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} samples prepared by solid state method showed that as gadolinium introduced into the system, a second phase was formed with a small percentage while samples prepared by citrate method exhibited a single phase. The distributions of different cations between different sites were determined by both Mössbauer effect spectroscopy, modified Bertaut and Rietveld analysis. Mössbauer technique at room temperature showed that samples synthesized by the ceramic method have a magnetic order while samples prepared by citrate method have a superparamagnetic nature. The canting angle between magnetic ions was increased by increased the amount of Zn in samples prepared by both methods.

Contribution of Iron Clusters to the Magnetic Properties of Pb{sub 1– y}Fe{sub y}Te Alloys

The field dependences of the magnetization (temperatures T = 2.0–70 K, magnetic fields B ≤ 7.5 T) of the samples from a single-crystalline Pb{sub 1– y}Fe{sub y}Te ingot (y = 0.02) grown by the Bridgman method are studied. It is established that the sample magnetization contains several major contributions such as the paramagnetism of iron ions, diamagnetism of the crystal lattice, and the contributions of charge carriers and clusters of iron atoms. The field dependences of the paramagnetic contribution of iron ions and the contribution of clusters of iron atoms are approximated by theoretical dependences based on the Brillouin and Langevin functions, respectively. The average concentrations and magnetic moment of clusters as well as the total magnetic momentum of clusters in the volume unit in the samples upon increasing the impurity concentration along the ingot are determined.

Magnetic properties of Fe-substituted NiBr 2 single crystals

NiBr 2 is a multiferroic material with an incommensurate magnetic ground state that has easy-plane anisotropy. This manuscript reports how the magnetic properties evolve with Fe substitution in Ni 1-x Fe x Br 2 single crystals for 0 0.17. A particular emphasis is placed on the = 0.055 crystal, for which magnetic phase diagrams were developed on the basis of anisotropic magnetization measurements. The observed phase evolution reveals a phase transition in the x = 0.055 crystal that is not present in NiBr 2 . The data also demonstrate that the easy-plane anisotropy of NiBr is altered by Fe substitution, with a finite easy-axis anisotropy developing at even the low concentration of x = 0.055. Overall, these results demonstrate that Fe substitution enables a fine-tuning of the magnetism in NiBr 2 , especially the magnetic anisotropy, and may therefore promote complex magnetic phases.

Ferromagnetic liquid droplets with adjustable magnetic properties

Significance Structured functional liquids combine mechanical versatility of fluids with solid-state properties, such as ferromagnetism, and offer a route to synthesize and control magnetic liquids for adaptive liquid robotics. Studies on these intriguing materials are only in their nascent state, and a profound understanding of the physical state is still lacking. We use hydrodynamics experiments to probe how the magnetization of ferromagnetic liquid droplets, governed by the assembly and jamming of magnetic nanoparticles at liquid–liquid interfaces, and their response to external stimuli can be tuned by chemical, structural, and magnetic means. Our results highlight the leading role of structural short-range order on magnetic properties, which provide a path toward nano-patterning structured liquids.

Ti Capping Layer Effects in Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of Sputter-Deposited FePt Thin Film

Ti/FePt/Fe nano-thin films were fabricated by a DC facing-target magnetron sputtering method onto glass substrates at room temperature and were subsequently annealed in situ in vacuum. The impacts of the Ti capping layer on microstructural and magnetic properties of the FePt films were investigated in detail. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns demonstrate that the film is deposited onto glass substrates and the addition of a Ti layer forms ternary TiFePt, and binary PtTi and FeTi alloys. The results reveal refined granularity, decreased roughness, and enhanced coercivity and degree of squareness after the introduction of a Ti capping layer.

Magnetic properties of the itinerant ferromagnet LaCrGe 3 under pressure studied by La 139 NMR

139 La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements under pressure (p = 0 – 2.64 GPa) have been carried out to investigate the static and dynamic magnetic properties of the itinerant ferromagnet LaCrGe 3 . 139 La -NMR spectra for all measured pressures in the ferromagnetically ordered state show a large shift due to the internal field induction |B int | ~ 4 T at the La site produced by Cr ordered moments. The change in B int by less than 5% with p up to 2.64 GPa indicates that the Cr 3d moments are robust under pressure. The temperature dependence of NMR shift and B int suggest that the ferromagnetic order develops below ~50 K under higher pressures in a magnetic field of ~7.2 T. Based on the analysis of NMR data using the self-consistent-renormalization (SCR) theory, the spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic state well above T C are revealed to be three-dimensional ferromagnetic throughout the measured p region.

Structural, Morphological, Electrical and Magnetic Properties of Yttrium-Substituted Co-Zn Ferrites Synthesized by Double Sintering Technique

A series of rare earth Y{sup 3+} ion substituted Co-Zn ferrites Co{sub 0.5}Zn{sub 0.5}Y{sub x}Fe{sub 2-x}O{sub 4} (x = 0.00 to 0.08 in step of 0.02) have been synthesized by conventional double sintering technique from the oxide powders of Co, Zn, Fe, and Y. The XRD, FESEM, EDS, DC resistivity, dielectric measurements, VSM, and Curie temperature (T{sub c}) analysis have been used to investigate structural, morphological, electrical, and magnetic properties. Single phase of cubic spinel structure has been confirmed up to x < 0.06, and a small amount of secondary phase YFeO{sub 3} has also been detected for x > 0.06. The lattice parameter initially decreases than increases with yttrium concentrations. The FESEM image shows that the grains and grain boundaries are distinct and uniformly distributed and the purity has also been endorsed from the EDS spectra. The average grain size decreases at x = 0.02 and then increases with Y substitution. The long range mobility of charge carriers and presence of localized charge carriers with retreat from the Debye-like behavior in the compositions have been explored using electric modulus and impedance. The magnetic strength diminishes owing to existence of magnetic dilution in the A-B interactions subsequent to the T{sub c} declines with the x contents. The value of saturation magnetization decreases with increasing Y{sup 3+} contents that indicates that the domain wall motion become tougher due to substitution of foreign ions Y{sup 3+} that possess larger ionic radius. Therefore, the Y{sup 3+} substituted Co{sub 0.5}Zn{sub 0.5}Y{sub x}Fe{sub 2-x}O{sub 4} (x = 0.00 to 0.08 in step of 0.02) ferrites with high resistivity and low losses has implications to be used in high frequency and power supply devices applications.

Structural and Magnetic Properties of La{sub 1−x}(Ca,Sr){sub x}MnO{sub 3} Powders Produced by the Hydrothermal Method

La{sub 1−x}(Ca,Sr){sub x}MnO{sub 3} manganites have been produced using the hydrothermal method. The influence of the concentration of La, Ca, and Sr on the structural, morphological, and magnetic properties was studied and analyzed. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that samples crystallized in rhombohedral or trigonal symmetries depending on the stoichiometry. The morphological analyses obtained by using scanning electron microscopy showed cauliflower-type microstructures in all samples. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy studies were also performed, evidencing not only the presence of the constituent elements but an oxygen deficiency and manganese-relative excess in all the samples. This fact is suggested as the cause of the unusual magnetic behavior where a low-temperature re-entrant phase was observed within the ferromagnetic matrix in some of the samples attributed to spin frustration. Furthermore, for some samples, a critical Curie temperature higher than the reported values is attributed to the relative excess of manganese ions, which can occupy other sites in the lattices as interstices or La, Ca, and Sr sites.

Magnetic properties of (Mo 2/3 Dy 1/3 ) 2 AlC arc melted polycrystalline samples

Here, this study investigates the structural and magnetic properties of arc-melted (Mo 2/3 Dy 1/3 ) 2 AlC polycrystalline samples, a member of the i-MAX phase family. Temperature-dependent magnetization and specific heat measurements confirm the low-temperature antiferromagnetic transitions around 14 K and 17 K. Neutron diffraction data collected at 4 K reveal the emergence of magnetic Bragg peaks that are not allowed in the paramagnetic space group C2/c, further confirming the presence of antiferromagnetic ordering. The detection of a secondary phase, DyAl 2 , is complicated by overlapping Bragg peaks with the monoclinic phase of (Mo 2/3 Dy 1/3 ) 2 AlC in powder XRD patterns. However, magnetization and neutron diffraction data suggest the presence of DyAl 2 , evidenced by a ferromagnetic phase transition around 62 K.

The dielectric and magnetic properties of mixed magnetoelectric (x)Mn{sub 0.4}Zn{sub 0.6}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4}–(1 – x) · PbZr{sub 0.53}Ti{sub 0.47}O{sub 3} (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.8) composites have been studied in the temperature range near the ferroelectric and magnetic phase transitions. The influence of the composite compositions on the thermodynamic parameters of the initial phases of the composites has been revealed. It is found that the reason for this influence is the mutual doping of the composite phases that takes place during high-temperature sintering of powders of ferrite Mn{sub 0.4}Zn{sub 0.6}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4} and ferroelectric PbZr{sub 0.53}Ti{sub 0.47}O{sub 3}.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties in semiconducting Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 with Eu-Eu dimers

Magnetic structure and crystal symmetry, which primarily determine the time-reversal and inversion symmetry, may give rise to numerous exotic quantum phenomena in magnetic semiconductors and semimetals when arranged in different patterns. Here, a new layered magnetic semiconductor, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 , was discovered and high-quality single crystals were grown using the Sn flux. According to structural characterization by x-ray diffraction and atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is found to crystallize in a hexagonal symmetry with the space group P6 3 /mmc (No. 194). After examining different specimens, we conclude that their stoichiometry is fixed at ~Eu 2.6 Zn 0.65 Sn 0.85 As 3 , which meets the chemical charge balance. Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is composed of septuple (Eu 1-δ Sn y As 2 )-Eu-(Zn x As)-Eu sequences. The shortest Eu–Eu distance in the system is between two Eu layers separated by Zn x As along the c-axis. Magnetization measurement shows an antiferromagnetic ordering in Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 at T N ~ 12 K, where the magnetic easy-axis is along the c-axis, and Mössbauer spectroscopy observes magnetic hyperfine splitting on Eu and Sn at 6 K. Magnetic anisotropy is significantly different from the ones along the ab-plane in other layered Eu-based magnetic semimetals. Heat capacity measurements confirm the magnetic transition around 12 K. Electrical resistivity measurement indicates semiconductor behavior with a band gap of ~0.86 eV. Finally, various Eu-based magnetic semiconductors could provide a tunable platform to study potential topological and magnetic properties.

Electrical and Magnetic Properties of Pb and In Nanofilaments in Asbestos near the Superconducting Transition

Bulk nanocomposites based on superconducting metals Pb and In embedded into matrices of natural chrysotile asbestos with the nanotube internal diameter d ~ 6 nm have been fabricated and studied. The low-temperature electrical and magnetic properties of the nanocomposites demonstrate the superconducting transition with the transition critical temperature T{sub c} ≈ (7.18 ± 0.02) K for the Pb–asbestos nanocomposite (this temperature is close to T{sub c} {sub bulk} = 7.196 K for bulk Pb). The electrical measurements show that In nanofilaments in asbestos have T{sub c} ~ 3.5–3.6 K that is higher than T{sub c} {sub bulk} = 3.41 K for bulk In. It is shown that the temperature smearing of the superconducting transition in the temperature dependences of the resistance R(T) ΔT ≈ 0.06 K for the Pb–asbestos and ΔT ≈ 1.8 K for the In–asbestos are adequately described by the fluctuation Aslamazov–Larkin and Langer–Ambegaokar theories. The resistive measurements show that the critical magnetic fields of the nanofilaments extrapolated to T = 0 K are H{sub c}(0) ~ 47 kOe for Pb in asbestos and H{sub c}(0) ~ 1.5 kOe for In in asbestos; these values are significantly higher than the values for the bulk materials (HH{sub c}{sup bulk} = 803 Oe for Pb and H{sub c}{sup bulk} = 285 Oe for In). The results of the electrical measurements for Pb‒asbestos and In–asbestos agree with the data for the magnetic-field dependences of the magnetic moment in these nanocomposites.

Magnetic Properties and Critical Current of Superconducting Nanocomposites (1 −x)YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7−δ} + xCuO

The aim of this paper was to study the effect of nanoscale inclusions of CuO as the second ingredient of composites on transport properties of superconducting YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} polycrystals. The samples of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7−δ} with different content of CuO nanoparticles were synthesized. The analysis of the magnetic properties was carried out within the extended critical state model. It was found that the addition of 0.5 and 1% of CuO nanoparticles leads to an increase in the intragranular density of the critical current at T= 4.2 K. A further increase of x from 2 to 15% and more than 40% decreases the critical current density. The critical current density higher than in the reference sample was also found in the samples with x= 20% and x= 24%.

SU(3) Polyakov Linear-Sigma Model: Magnetic Properties of QCD Matter in Thermal and Dense Medium

The linear-sigma model, in which information about confining gluons is included through the Polyakov-loop potential (PLSM), is considered in order to perform a systematic study for various magnetic properties of QCD matter under extreme conditions of high temperatures and densities and finite magnetic field strengths. The introduction of magnetic field to the PLSM Lagrangian requires suitable utilization of Landau quantization, modification in the dispersion relations, and momentum-space dimension-reduction. We observed that increasing the magnetic field leads to filling-up lower Landau levels first and decreasing the number of occupied levels. We conclude that the population of Landau levels is most sensitive to the magnetic field and to the quark charges. The influences of finite magnetic field on the temperature dependence of chiral and deconfinement order-parameter(s) are studied. We present estimations for the magnetization, the magnetic susceptibility, the permeability, and the catalytic properties of QCD matter as functions of temperature. The dependences of the resulting freeze-out parameters, temperatures, and baryon chemical potentials on the corresponding magnetic field strengths have been analyzed, as well. These calculations are compared with recent lattice QCD simulations, whenever available. We conclude that the QCD matter seems to have paramagnetic property at temperatures greater than the critical one. There is an evidence for weak diamagnetic property at low temperatures. Last but not least, we observe that the magnetic catalysis is inverse, namely, the critical temperatures decrease with increasing the magnetic field.

Magnetic properties of the low-dimensional Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 system ( M = Cu , Co , Mn )

Here, we explored the magnetic properties of the low-dimensional Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 (M = Cu, Co, and Mn) system using both experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. Magnetization, specific heat, and single crystal neutron diffraction measurements have been performed on single crystal Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 . The spin structure was determined and a magnetic phase diagram with applied field along the b axis was constructed, which contains a spin flop transition around 6 T. Magnetization and specific heat measurements confirmed the presence of weak ferromagnetism in Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 . Furthermore, we performed local-spin density approximation with on-site Coulomb energy (LSDA+U) calculations for the Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 (M = Cu, Co, and Mn) system. Due to the first-principles calculations, the origin of the magnetic differences of the three materials is discussed.

The finite size effect on the transport and magnetic properties of epitaxial Fe 3 O 4 thin films

Here, magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) has great potential for use in the new field of spintronics due to its interesting physical properties, e.g., half-metallic ferromagnetic nature and metal–insulator transition (Verwey transition). Therefore, a basic understanding of these properties is essential for applications in spintronics devices, especially as the film thickness is reduced. In this work, the transport and magnetic properties of stoichiometric ultrathin epitaxial Fe 3 O 4 films have been investigated. The Fe 3 O 4 films were grown on MgO (001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy under optimal growth conditions. Low energy electron diffraction and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy confirmed that the films are single phase Fe 3 O 4 . The Verwey transition has been investigated using both transport and magnetization measurements. The magnetization measurements show a sharp Verwey transition in all of these films, which indicates that the films have properties comparable to the bulk. Furthermore, the magnetization measurements at room temperature show that the ultrathin films with thickness t < 20 nm are ferromagnetic with magnetization values greater than those for bulk magnetite. Such enhanced magnetization in ultrathin Fe 3 O 4 films is very promising for spin injection and other applications.

Magnetic properties of the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ capped-kagome antiferromagnet (CsBr)Cu 5 V 2 O 10

Here, the structural and magnetic properties of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ averievite (CsBr)⁢Cu 5⁢ V 2 ⁢O 10 are investigated by means of temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and 51 V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The crystal structure (trigonal, $P\bar{3}$) features a frustrated capped-kagome lattice of the magnetic Cu 2+ ions. Magnetic susceptibility analysis indicates a large Curie-Weiss temperature of $\theta$ CW ≃ -175K. Heat capacity signals the onset of a magnetic long-range-order (LRO) at T N ≃21.5K at zero magnetic field due to the presence of significant inter-planer coupling in this system. The magnetic LRO below 27 K is further evident from the drastic change in the 51 V NMR signal intensity and rapid enhancement in the 51 V spin-lattice relaxation rate in a magnetic field of 6.3 T. The frustration index ƒ=|⁢$\theta$ CW ⁢|/⁢T N ≃ 8 ascertains strong magnetic frustration in this compound. From the high-temperature value of the 51 V NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate, the leading antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the Cu 2+ ions is calculated to be J/k B ≃ 136K.
