Average Cosmological Invariant Parameters of Cosmic Gamma Ray Bursts

Average cosmological invariant parameters (ACIPs) are calculated for six groups of BATSE cosmic gamma-ray bursts selected by their peak fluxes on the 1.024s timescale. The ACIPs represent the average temporal and spectral properties of these events equally in the observer frame of reference and in the co-moving frames of outbursting emitters. The parameters are determined separately for rise fronts and for back slopes of bursts, defined as the time profiles before and after the main peaks, respectively. The ACIPs for the rise fronts are found to be different for different intensity groups, while the ACIPs for the back slopes show no significant dependence on intensity. We conclude that emitters of bursts manifest standard average properties only during the back slopes of bursts.

The influence of vision on susceptibility to acute motion sickness studied under quantifiable stimulus-response conditions

Twenty-four healthy men, 22 to 25 years of age, were exposed to stressful accelerations in a rotating room until acute mild motion sickness was elicited. Thirteen subjects in one group were exposed first with eyes open and later with eyes covered; the reverse order was used with the remaining eleven in the other group. The stressful accelerations were generated by requiring the subject to execute 120 standardized head movements at each 1-rpm increase in angular velocity until the desired endpoint was reached. When susceptibility to motion sickness with eyes open and covered is compared, 19 subjects were more susceptible with eyes open, three with eyes covered, and in the remaining two susceptibility was the same. The maximum difference in velocity between trial 1 and 2 was 7 rpm when susceptibility was greater with eyes open and 3 rpm when it was greater with eyes covered; the means, respectively, were 3.2 and 2.0 rpm. Among subjects manifesting greater susceptibility with eyes open than covered the group differences were small, indicating little or no adaptation effects. The findings are discussed mainly on the basis that vision may act also to decrease susceptibility under the stimulus conditions described.

Early cellular evolution.

Study of the evolutionary developments that occurred subsequent to the origin of ancestral cells. Microbial physiology and ecology are potential sharp tools for shaping concepts of microbial evolution. Some popular unjustified assumptions are discussed. It is considered that certain principles derived mainly from the advances of molecular biology can be used to order the natural groups (genera) of extant prokaryotes and their patterns phylogenetically.

Processes and subdivisions in diogenites, a multivariate statistical analysis

Multivariate statistical techniques used on diogenite orthopyroxene analyses show the relationships that occur within diogenites and the two orthopyroxenite components (class I and II) in the polymict diogenite Garland. Cluster analysis shows that only Peckelsheim is similar to Garland class I (Fe-rich) and the other diogenites resemble Garland class II. The unique diogenite Y 75032 may be related to type I by fractionation. Factor analysis confirms the subdivision and shows that Fe does not correlate with the weakly incompatible elements across the entire pyroxene composition range, indicating that igneous fractionation is not the process controlling total diogenite composition variation. The occurrence of two groups of diogenites is interpreted as the result of sampling or mixing of two main sequences of orthopyroxene cumulates with slightly different compositions.

LEO life testing with different charge control

The effect of charge control on the performance of Nickel-Cadmium batteries is very important. The results of three tests performed in the Battery Test Centre of ESTEC are described. Two techniques were employed: (1) the tapering method well known for space applications, and (2) the temperature derivative technique (TDT) developed by ESTEC. In addition, a comparative study has been made between the behavior of a group of 3 batteries charged and discharged in parallel compared to an identical group discharged in parallel, but charged individually. An approach of evolution laws for the main electrical characteristics of cells is presented.

Acceleration of energetic oxygen (E greater than 137 keV) in the storm-time ring current

Measurements obtained with the medium-energy particle analyzer of the equatorial-orbit AMPTE/CCE satellite during a geomagnetic storm on September 4-7, 1984 are reported and analyzed, with a focus on the high-energy populations (H, He, and CNO-group ions with E greater than 56, 72, and 137 keV, respectively). During the main phase of the storm, ring-current-region increases in O(+) intensity by factors up to 2000 are observed at L = 2.5-7.0, and the component at L = 3.5-5.5 is attributed to a 1.5-earth-radius inward displacement of the prestorm energetic-oxygen population followed by betatron acceleration. Alternative oxygen sources and/or acceleration mechanisms to account for the component at L = 6.5-8 and pitch angle 90 deg are discussed.

Another collision for the Coma cluster

The wavelet transform analysis of the Rosat position sensitive proportional counter (PSPC) images of the Coma cluster are presented. The analysis shows, on small scales, a substructure dominated by two extended sources surrounding the two bright clusters NGC 4874 and NGC 4889. On scales of about 2 arcmin to 3 arcmin, the analysis reveals a tail of X-ray emission originating near the cluster center, curving to the south and east for approximately 25 arcmin and ending near the galaxy NGC 4911. The results are interpreted in terms of a merger of a group, having a core mass of approximately 10(exp 13) solar mass, with the main body of the Coma cluster.

Mirrors Steer NASA in the Right Direction

Left Hand Design completed the production of the fine-steering mirror technology through 1995 Phase I and 1996 Phase II SBIR contracts with JPL's Interferometric Astronomy group. Presently, the work resulting from the collaboration with NASA represents the company's main line of products for the commercial sector. Aerospace-related applications include: image motion compensation; interceptor seekers for the U.S. Army and Navy; Earth observation and resource monitoring from spacecraft and airborne platforms; space astronomy; helicopter-based surveillance; and interferometric metrology. Left Hand Design's fine-steering mirrors have also penetrated the commercial marketplace with non-aerospace applications, including laser communications, video cameras, infrared inspection, solar observatories, and bathymeters. These cost-effective, commercial mirrors perform a variety of functions, such as scanning, alignment, chopping, tracking, pointing, and beam stabilization. Potential future applications include laser surgery and photolithography.

Integrated Spectroscopic Studies of Anhydrous Sulfate Minerals

Sulfates have been identified in Martian soils and bedrock and are emerging as an important indicator for aqueous activity on Mars. Sulfate minerals can form in a variety of low-temperature (evaporitic; chemical-weathering) and high-temperature (volcanic/fumarolic; hydrothermal) environments and their formational environments can range from alkaline to acidic. Although sulfates generally form in the presence of water, not all sulfates are hydrous or contain water in their structures. Many of these anhydrous sulfates (Dana group 28; Strunz class 67A) are minerals that form as accompanying phases to the main minerals in ore deposits or as replacement deposits in sedimentary rocks. However, some form from thermal decomposition of OH or H2O-bearing sulfates, such as from the reaction [1]: jarosite = yavapaiite + Fe2O3 + H2O. Where known, the stability fields of these minerals all suggest that they would be stable under martian surface conditions [2]. Thus, anhydrous sulfate minerals may contribute to martian surface mineralogy, so they must be well-represented in spectral libraries used for interpretation of the Martian surface. We present here the preliminary results of an integrated study of emittance, reflectance, and Mossbauer spectroscopy of a suite of wel-lcharacterized anhydrous sulfates.

adwTools Developed: New Bulk Alloy and Surface Analysis Software for the Alloy Design Workbench

A suite of atomistic modeling software, called the Alloy Design Workbench, has been developed by the Computational Materials Group at the NASA Glenn Research Center and the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI). The main goal of this software is to guide and augment experimental materials research and development efforts by creating powerful, yet intuitive, software that combines a graphical user interface with an operating code suitable for real-time atomistic simulations of multicomponent alloy systems. Targeted for experimentalists, the interface is straightforward and requires minimum knowledge of the underlying theory, allowing researchers to focus on the scientific aspects of the work. The centerpiece of the Alloy Design Workbench suite is the adwTools module, which concentrates on the atomistic analysis of surfaces and bulk alloys containing an arbitrary number of elements. An additional module, adwParams, handles ab initio input for the parameterization used in adwTools. Future modules planned for the suite include adwSeg, which will provide numerical predictions for segregation profiles to alloy surfaces and interfaces, and adwReport, which will serve as a window into the database, providing public access to the parameterization data and a repository where users can submit their own findings from the rest of the suite. The entire suite is designed to run on desktop-scale computers. The adwTools module incorporates a custom OAI/Glenn-developed Fortran code based on the BFS (Bozzolo- Ferrante-Smith) method for alloys, ref. 1). The heart of the suite, this code is used to calculate the energetics of different compositions and configurations of atoms.

Satellite-Model-Ground-based Inter-Comparisons (WG-3)

AERO-SAT is an international consortium of experts on aerosol remote sensing from ground and space. This initiative was established in 2013 (1) to accelerate the exchange of ideas and concepts and (2) to elevate the capabilities of satellite sensorsretrieval (aerosol) products, which are needed to constrain aerosol processing in and assist in evaluations of global modeling. The main goal of the meeting is to substantiate and invigorate the five AEROSAT working groups. On each of those five topics dedicated working groups are building up and will report on their initial activities followed by further related presentations and ample time for discussions. Organizers of the meeting held September 27-28, 2014 would like to post the presentations to a website.

Einstein Observatory coronal temperatures of late-type stars

The results are presented of a survey of the coronal temperatures of late-type stars using the Einstein Observatory IPC. The spectral analysis shows that the frequently found one- and two-temperature descriptions are mainly influenced by the SNR of the data and that models using continuous emission measure distributions can provide equally adequate and physically more meaningful and more plausible descriptions. Intrinsic differences in differential emission measure distributions are found for four groups of stars. M dwarfs generally show evidence for high-temperature gas in conjunction with lower-temperature material, while main-sequence stars of types F and G have the high-temperature component either absent or very weak. Very hot coronae without the lower-temperature component appearing in dwarf stars are evident in most of the giant stars studied. RS CVn systems show evidence for extremely hot coronae, sometimes with no accompanying lower-temperature material.

Neurogenic orthostatic hypotension: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with midodrine

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of midodrine for treatment of patients with orthostatic hypotension due to autonomic failure. PATIENTS: Ninety-seven patients with orthostatic hypotension were randomized in a 4-week, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study with a 1-week placebo run-in period. Patients ranged in age from 22 to 86 years (mean: 61 years). METHODS: After a 1-week run-in phase, either placebo or midodrine at a dose of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, or 10 mg was administered three times a day for 4 weeks. Both the placebo group and the 2.5-mg midodrine group received constant doses throughout the double-blind phase. The patients receiving 5 mg or 10 mg of midodrine were given doses that were increased at weekly intervals by 2.5-mg increments until the designated dose was reached. Efficacy evaluations were based on an improvement at 1-hour postdose in standing systolic blood pressure and in symptoms of orthostatic hypotension (syncope, dizziness/lightheadedness, weakness/fatigue, and low energy level). RESULTS: Midodrine (10 mg) increased standing systolic blood pressure by 22 mm Hg (28%, p < 0.001 versus placebo). Midodrine improved (p < 0.05) the following symptoms of orthostatic hypotension compared to placebo: dizziness/lightheadedness, weakness/fatigue, syncope, low energy level, impaired ability to stand, and feelings of depression. The overall side effects were mainly mild to moderate. One or more side effects were reported by 22% of the placebo group compared with 27% of the midodrine-treated group. Scalp pruritus/tingling, which was reported by 10 of 74 (13.5%) of the midodrine-treated patients, was most frequent. Other reported side effects included supine hypertension (8%) and feelings of urinary urgency (4%). CONCLUSION: We conclude that midodrine is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for moderate-to-severe orthostatic hypotension associated with autonomic failure.

An ALMA Study of the Massive Molecular Clump N159W-North in the Large Magellanic Cloud: A Possible Gas Flow Penetrating One of the Most Massive Protocluster Systems in the Local Group

Massive dense clumps in the Large Magellanic Cloud can be an important laboratory to explore the formation ofpopulous clusters. We report multiscale ALMA observations of the N159W-North clump, which is the most CO-intense region in the galaxy. High-resolution CO isotope and 1.3 mm continuum observations with an angularresolution of∼025(∼0.07 pc)revealed more thanfive protostellar sources with CO outflows within the mainridge clump. One of the thermal continuum sources, MMS-2, shows an especially massive/dense nature whosetotal H2mass and peak column density are∼104Meand∼1024cm−2, respectively, and harbors massive(∼100Me)starless core candidates identified as its internal substructures. The main ridge containing this sourcecan be categorized as one of the most massive protocluster systems in the Local Group. The CO high-resolutionobservations found several distinctfilamentary clouds extending southward from the star-forming spots. The CO(1–0)data set with a largerfield of view reveals a conical,∼30 pc long complex extending toward the northerndirection. These features indicate that a large-scale gas compression event may have produced the massive star-forming complex. Based on the striking similarity between the N159W-North complex and the other twopreviously reported high-mass star-forming clouds in the nearby regions, we propose a“teardrops inflow model”that explains the synchronized, extreme star formation across>50 pc, including one of the most massiveprotocluster clumps in the Local Group.

Deciphering the X-ray Emission of the Nearest Herbig Ae Star

In this research program, we obtained and analyzed an X-ray observation of the young nearby intermediate mass pre-main sequence star HD 104237 using the XMM-Newton space-based observatory. The observation was obtained on 17 Feb. 2002. This observation yielded high-quality X-ray images, spectra, and timing data which provided valuable information on the physical processes responsible for the X-ray emission. This star is a member of the group of so-called Herbig Ae/Be stars, which are young intermediate mass (approx. 2 - 4 solar masses) pre-main sequence (PMS) stars a few million years old that have not yet begun core hydrogen burning. The objective of the XMM-Newton observation was to obtain higher quality data than previously available in order to constrain possible X-ray emission mechanisms. The origin of the X-ray emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars is not yet known. These intermediate mass PMS stars lie on radiative tracks and are not expected to emit X-rays via solar-like magnetic processes, nor are their winds powerful enough to produce X-rays by radiative wind shocks as in more massive O-type stars. The emission could originate in unseen low-mass companions, or it may be intrinsic to the Herbig stars themselves if they still have primordial magnetic fields or can sustain magnetic activity via a nonsolar dynamo.

Cloud and haze properties from Pioneer Venus polarimetry

Linear polarization measurements made by the Pioneer Venus orbiter cloud photopolarimeter determined that the low and midlatitude visible clouds mainly contain small H2SO4 droplets with an extensive haze of submicron particles above the cloud group. The polarization of the bright areas poleward of the 55 deg latitude results from the haze which exhibits large spatial and temporal variations. Significant diurnal differences are observed at low latitudes, with more haze close to the morning terminator than near the noon meridian.

Database activity in the Italian Astronet: DIRA 2

The development and utilization of informational archives and databases started, in the Italian Astronet Project, in the middle of 1983. In that year, a small group of astronomers and some more technical people met together in an Astronet working group, with a common, painful experience in managing astronomical catalogues and archives with computers. Nowadays, some years later, some software packages and the contents of both, a relative general database and several local databases represent the work and the effort of the group. The systems have been conceived and developed keeping in mind the original goal of the group: to allow the single atronomer to make a free use of original data. The main package (DIRA) was rewritten, after some years of use, to fully take advantage of the several suggestions of the astronomer that used it and gathered experiences in the astronomical catalog's management. A more technical goal was to install the whole system, born and developed in the vms environment, on unix and unix-like systems. This new version, DIRA2, has a new user interface, a query language with SQL style commands supporting numerical and character functions also and a set of commands to create new catalogues from existing data. The graphics commands are also more powerful with respect to the previous version. DIRA (and DIRA2 of course) philosophy and design are very simple and proved to be very appreciated by astronomers, namely, to normalize and homogenize, at minimum, astronomical catalogues, to collect satisfactory astronomical documentation on their contents and, finally, to allow an astronomical approach to the dialogue with the database. DIRA2 is currently used in most Italian astronomical institutes to retrieve data from a still growing database of about 140 well documented and controlled astronomical catalogues, for the identification of objects and the preparation of a 'medium size' survey, in astrometry and in the creation of new catalogues.
