New opportunities for future small civil turbine engines - Overviewing the GATE studies

This paper presents an overview of four independent studies that explore the opportunities for future General Aviation Turbine Engines (GATE) in the 150-1000 SHP class. Detroit Diesel Allison, Garrett/AiResearch, Teledyne CAE, and Williams Research participated along with several airframers. These studies forecasted the potential impact of advanced technology turbine engines in the post-1988 market, identified important aircraft and missions, desirable engine sizes, engine performance and cost goals. Parametric evaluations of various engine cycles, configurations, design features, and advanced technology elements defined baseline conceptual engines for each of the important missions identified by the market analysis. Both fixed-wing and helicopter aircraft, and turboshaft, turboprop, and turbofan engines were considered. All four companies predicted sizable performance gains (e.g., 20% SFC decrease), and three predicted large engine cost reductions of sufficient magnitude to challenge the reciprocating engine in the 300-500 SHP class. Key technology areas were recommended for NASA support in order to realize these improvements.

Combustion technology overview

An overview of combustor technology developments required for use of broadened property fuels in jet aircraft is presented. The intent of current investigations is to determine the extent to which fuel properties can be varied, to obtain a data base of combustion - fuel quality effects, and to determine the trade-offs associated with broadened property fuels. Subcomponents of in-service combustors such as fuel injectors and liners, as well as air distributions and stoichiometry, are being altered to determine the extent to which fuel flexibility can be extended. Finally, very advanced technology consisting of new combustor concepts is being evolved to optimize the fuel flexibility of gas turbine combustors.

An overview of the NASA satellite communications program

This overview sets the framework for five descriptive papers from NASA Field Centers where satellite communications research and development is being conducted. A review of events of 1973-78 in the Federal Government, in industry, and in professional organizations are shown to have contributed to the formulation of new policy supporting the establishment of renewed efforts within NASA toward improved use of the spectrum and orbit for communications. The work will focus on the development of 'frequency re-use' technology, including multi-beam antennas and on-board switching for future spacecraft. This paper treats the planning issues and the approaches taken toward forming a coherent program from the sustaining efforts of the recent past. Companion papers highlight the methods, the technology, and the activities that are assisting in the transition to a new program.

Overview of stall/spin technology

A general overview of the current state of the art in stall/spin technology for highly-maneuverable military configurations and light general aviation configurations is presented. The key areas of predictive methods, aerodynamics, and flight controls are discussed, using illustrations of results obtained during recent studies. In addition, some of the more-pertinent near-term and future challenges and opportunities in stall/spin technology are discussed. This survey of the existing technology shows that rapid progress has been achieved in each of the key technical areas during the last decade, especially for military airplanes. However, a significant amount of innovative research is urgently required in order to improve the productivity and capabilities of existing predictive techniques, and to provide the technology required for advanced, unconventional configurations.

The Earth Radiation Budget Experiment /ERBE/ - An overview

An overview of the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) is presented along with a brief history relative to the evolution of the ERBE science measurement requirements. A description of the ERBE instrument is presented which includes both the non-scanner and scanner instrument packages. In addition, ERBE science investigations are summarized. The ERBE, to be flown on a three-satellite mission in the 1980's will, for the first time, provide radiation measurements with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution to determine the monthly average radiation budget on regional, zonal, and global scales and the diurnal variation on regional and monthly scales.

Science and Applications Space Platforms - A NASA overview

An overview of past, present, and future activities relating to space platforms is presented, with emphasis placed on implementation of the initial platform. It is noted that the challenge at present is to define an initial system that can accommodate high priority science, that possesses the capability of doing multi-discipline science, and that demonstrates on-orbit servicing and payload exchange through use of the Shuttle. The evolution of the Science and Applications Space Platform (SASP), which will provide significantly more time on-orbit for instrument operations without increasing Space Shuttle orbiter time on-orbit, is traced. The importance of completing all required activities to support a new start for the SASP in fiscal year 1983 is stressed. While the initial SASP will support only a limited set of investigations, the program will evolve by replication, upgrading, or the development of new systems to support a broader and generally more demanding set of system requirements.

Quantitative simulation of a magnetospheric substorm. I - Model logic and overview

Results of a comprehensive computer simulation of the behavior of the earth's inner magnetosphere during a substorm-type event are reported. It is pointed out that the computer model self-consistently computes electric fields, currents, and plasma distributions and velocities in the inner-magnetosphere/ionosphere system; parallel electric fields and ionospheric neutral winds, however, are not included. The basic equations of the model are derived, and the inputs are described. An overview of the results is also given. The first appendix contains derivations of general, useful laws of bounce-averaged gradient, curvature, and E x B drifts in a plasma with isotropic pitch angle distribution. The second appendix gives a description of the numerical method used in the simulation.
