Elastic Plastic Fracture Analysis of an Aluminum COPV Liner

Onboard any space-launch vehicle, composite over-wrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) may be utilized by propulsion or environmental control systems. The failure of a COPV has the potential to be catastrophic, resulting in the loss of vehicle, crew or mission. The latest COPV designs have reduced the wall-thickness of the metallic liner to the point where the material strains plastically during operation. At this time, the only method to determine the damage tolerance lifetime (safe-life) of a plastically responding metallic liner is through full-scale COPV testing. Conducting tests costs substantially more and can be far more time consuming than performing an analysis. As a result of this cost, there is a need to establish a qualifying process through the use of a crack growth analysis tool. This paper will discuss fracture analyses of plastically responding metallic liners in COPVs. Uni-axial strain tests have been completed on laboratory specimens to collect elastic-plastic crack growth data. This data has been modeled with the crack growth analysis tool, NASGRO 6.20 to predict the response of laboratory specimens and subsequently the complexity of a COPV.

Initial Study of Friction Pull Plug Welding

Pull plug friction welding is a new process being developed to conveniently eliminate defects from welded plate tank structures. The general idea is to drill a hole of precise, optimized dimensions and weld a plug into it, filling the hole perfectly. A conically-shaped plug is rotated at high angular velocity as it is brought into contact with the plate material in the hole. As the plug is pulled into the hole, friction rapidly raises the temperature to the point at which the plate material flows plastically. After a brief heating phase, the plug rotation is terminated. The plug is then pulled upon with a forging force, solidly welding the plug into the hole in the plate. Three aspects of this process were addressed in this study. The transient temperature distribution was analyzed based on slightly idealized boundary conditions for different plug geometries. Variations in hole geometry and ram speed were considered, and a program was created to calculate volumes of displaced material and empty space, as well as many other relevant dimensions. The relation between the axially applied forging force and the actual forging pressure between the plate and plug surfaces was determined for various configurations.

Simplified method for nonlinear structural analysis

A simplified inelastic analysis computer program was developed for predicting the stress-strain history of a thermomechanically cycled structure from an elastic solution. The program uses an iterative and incremental procedure to estimate the plastic strains from the material stress-strain properties and a simulated plasticity hardening model. The simplified method was exercised on a number of problems involving uniaxial and multiaxial loading, isothermal and nonisothermal conditions, and different materials and plasticity models. Good agreement was found between these analytical results and nonlinear finite element solutions for these problems. The simplified analysis program used less than 1 percent of the CPU time required for a nonlinear finite element analysis.

Development of a Printable Prill Formulation Technique and Demonstration of Monomodal Prill Size on Compaction Density and Compressive Strength

Polymer-bonded explosive molding powder, or “prills,” are relied on for the fabrication of pressed high explosives since the 1950's. The wet granulation technique, also known as “slurry coating,” that is used to formulate prills, is a complex process that results in polydisperse and variable yields. This makes it difficult to study the mesoscale effect that prills have on the microstructure of a pressed article. The following study introduces a novel approach to energetic granulation that leverages techniques used in the additive manufacturing of paste-like energetic materials. This extrusion granulation, or prill printing technique, makes it possible to tailor the sizes and shapes of prills, allowing for their morphological influences to be studied in a controlled manner. The following work details the fabrication and characterization of four monomodal size lots of prills using an inert formulation (95 wt.% melamine, 5 wt.% polymer binder). Prills from each size lot were die-pressed using a fixed recipe to investigate how prill size impacts compaction density and therefore compressive strength. It was found that larger prills influence the pressing density by creating larger defects within the microstructure of a pressed article, resulting in a decrease in compressive strength.

Using Data Science Tools to Reveal and Understand Subtle Relationships of Inhibitor Structure in Frontal Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

The rate of frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) using the Grubbs generation II catalyst is impacted by both the concentration and choice of monomers and inhibitors, usually organophosphorus derivatives. Herein we report a data-science-driven workflow to evaluate how these factors impact both the rate of FROMP and how long the formulation of the mixture is stable (pot life). Using this workflow, we built a classification model using a single-node decision tree to determine how a simple phosphine structural descriptor (V bur-near ) can bin long versus short pot life. Additionally, we applied a nonlinear kernel ridge regression model to predict how the inhibitor and selection/concentration of comonomers impact the FROMP rate. Furthermore, the analysis provides selection criteria for material network structures that span from highly cross-linked thermosets to non-cross-linked thermoplastics as well as degradable and nondegradable materials.

Characterization of ablator dynamics initiated by picket-pulse conditions

Direct-drive laser-fusion targets may include low-cost plastic ablator material. Here, this work describes a tabletop experimental system designed to enable the investigation of the interaction of such ablator material as a function of the laser wavelength and the associated excitation mechanism. This experimental system offers time-resolved imaging of the material response with subpicosecond temporal resolution and ≈1-μm spatial resolution. The system involves synchronized femtosecond and picosecond lasers to initiate and characterize the dynamics of polystyrene planar targets irradiated by conditions similar to a “picket” prepulse from a direct-drive pulse shape. Ultrafast imaging of the initial excitation process followed by the resulting critical plasma formation, shock-wave propagation, and blowoff plasma expansion is used to compare the impact of excitation wavelength, 355 nm or 266 nm, on the ensuing dynamics. This work aims to investigate fundamental laser material interactions to help advance physics models that can inform the development of laser driver and target designs.

The Role of Biofuels and Biomass Feedstocks for Decarbonizing the U.S. Economy by 2050 - (DECARB) Decarbonizing Energy Through Collaborative Analysis of Routes and Benefits

Utilizing biomass resources, such as cellulosic biomass and waste, can greatly contribute to decarbonization efforts in the U.S. economy. The U.S. bioenergy sector includes corn ethanol production, biodiesel, renewable diesel production, and the utilization of biomass wastes for electricity generation being the primary applications. Within the electricity sector, biopower can play a crucial role as a stable low-carbon resource. Enhancing the electricity mix's diversity could enhance grid reliability. If the issues regarding hot gas cleanup can be resolved, flexible biopower resources like biomass gasification facilities could complement the integration of variable renewable energy sources due to their quick ramp-up and ramp-down times. The criticality of bioenergy deployment lies in its ability to decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors, such as aviation, where alternative decarbonization options may not be viable in the short term. Moreover, bioenergy has the potential to be converted into process heating, building materials, and plastics, which are not considered in this study. A set of pathways was carefully chosen to represent viable options for converting ample herbaceous and woody cellulosic feedstocks into fuels, chemicals, and electricity in this study. In conclusion, biomass pathways provide flexibility by generating various types of bioenergy and bioproducts, including electricity, hydrogen, liquid fuels, biochemicals, and bioplastics. When paired with carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), specific bioenergy approaches can effectively extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus providing an effective decarbonization option for the transportation sector.
