Gas-Phase Formation of 1,3,5,7-Cyclooctatetraene (C 8 H 8 ) through Ring Expansion via the Aromatic 1,3,5-Cyclooctatrien-7-yl Radical (C 8 H 9 • ) Transient

Gas-phase 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (C 8 H 8 ) and triplet aromatic 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (C 8 H 8 ) were formed for the first time through the bimolecular methylidyne radicals (CH) - 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene (C 7 H 8 ) reactions under single collision conditions on the doublet surface. The reaction involves methylidyne radical addition to the olefinic pi electron system of 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene followed by isomerization and ring expansion to aromatic 1,3,5-cyclooctatrien-7-yl radical (C 8 H 9 •). The chemically activated doublet radical intermediate undergoes unimolecular decomposition to 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene. Substituted 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene molecules can be prepared in the gas phase with hydrogen atom(s) in the 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene reactant being replaced by organic side groups. Furthermore, these findings are also of potential interest to organometallic chemists by expanding the synthesis of exotic transition metal complexes incorporating substituted 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene dianion (C 8 H 8 2- ) ligands and to untangle the unimolecular decomposition of chemically activated and substituted 1,3,5-cyclooctatrien-7-yl radical eventually gaining a fundamental insight of their bonding chemistry, electronic structures, and stabilities.

Isostructural Phase Transition of Fe 2 ⁢O 3 under Laser Shock Compression

We present in situ x-ray diffraction and velocity measurements of Fe 2⁢ O 3 under laser shock compression at pressures between 38–122 GPa. None of the high-pressure phases reported by static compression studies were observed. Instead, we observed an isostructural phase transition from 𝛼−Fe 2⁢ O 3 to a new 𝛼′−Fe 2 ⁢O 3 phase at a pressure of 50–62 GPa. The 𝛼′−Fe 2⁢ O 3 phase differs from 𝛼−Fe 2 ⁢O 3 by an 11% volume drop and a different unit cell compressibility. We further observed a two-wave structure in the velocity profile, which can be related to an intermediate regime where both 𝛼 and 𝛼′ phases coexist. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations with a Hubbard parameter indicate that the observed unit cell volume drop can be associated with a spin transition following a magnetic collapse.

Effects of annealing temperature on the magnetic properties of highly crystalline biphase iron oxide nanorods

We report on the effects of annealing temperatures ranging from 225 °C to 325 °C on the magnetic properties of high aspect ratio iron oxide nanorods consisting of a ferrimagnetic Fe 3 O 4 phase and an antiferromagnetic α-Fe 2 O 3 phase in an as-prepared state. Annealing at the aforementioned temperatures under a constant flow of O 2 for 3 h leads to an increment of the volume fraction of the antiferromagnetic α-Fe 2 O 3 phase and concomitant enhancement of the crystallinity of the ferrimagnetic Fe 3 O 4 phase. These opposing effects compete with each other, resulting in a decrease in global magnetization with increasing the annealing temperature. The desirable magnetic properties are achieved for the sample annealed at 250 °C. For all samples investigated, we observed an increase in low field magnetization at low temperatures after the sample is field cooled in the presence of a 1T magnetic field, which we attribute to the ordering of macro-spins of the weakly ordered antiferromagnetic α-Fe 2 O 3 phase in the presence of the cooling field. Our study will pave the way for determining the optimal conditions to enhance the magnetic characteristics in iron oxide nanorods, which will enable its use in spintronics and biomedical applications.

Microstructural refinement of an Al-Ce-Mg alloy via Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion

Al-Ce alloys have attracted recent interest because of their high thermal stability due to the low solubility of Ce in the Al matrix. The Al 11 Ce 3 eutectic phase gives excellent strain hardening behavior and moderate high-temperature strength in the as-cast state. However, its strengthening effect is limited by its coarse as-cast structure. Therefore, alternative manufacturing methods such as additive manufacturing or equal channel angular pressing have been applied to refine the Al 11 Ce 3 phase to good effect. However, these techniques are both expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, this study aims to use Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE), an emerging solid phase processing technique that is more easily scalable than the previously mentioned methods. ShAPE can produce useful cross-sections of an Al-8Ce-4Mg alloy while refining the Al 11 Ce 3 phase to produce a higher strength material. It was found that a low temperature ShAPE process can improve the room temperature yield strength by ~60 % compared to a binary Al-4Mg alloy. Additionally, the high-temperature yield strength of the Al-Ce alloys increased by 20%, with a simultaneous 15% improvement in ductility compared to the binary Al-Mg alloy. Finally, these results highlight the potential for ShAPE as a processing technique for Al-Ce alloys.

On Proton Defects and the Phase Transformation of NiO 2

One approach to high-capacity Li-ion battery cathodes is to increase the Ni content. Unfortunately, Ni-rich materials undergo a phase transition and volume collapse at a high state of charge (SOC), which degrades battery performance. At a high SOC, NiO 2 undergoes a phase transition from the O 3 to the O 1 phase. The O 1 phase appears to be more thermodynamically stable than the O 3 phase. However, density functional theory (DFT) often predicts higher stability for O 3 , depending on the DFT approximation. The energy difference between the O 1 and O 3 phases is on the order of 10 meV/atom. Furthermore, we find that proton defects are more stable in the O 1 phase than in the O 3 phase by about 90 meV per proton. Defects in NiO 2 energetically favor the O 3 -O 1 phase transition observed in a high SOC in Li $x$ NiO 2 .

High-pressure phase transition in 3-D printed nanolamellar high-entropy alloy by imaging and simulation insights

Abstract We report on the high-resolution imaging and molecular dynamics simulations of a 3D-printed eutectic high-entropy alloy (EHEA) Ni 40 Co 20 Fe 10 Cr 10 Al 18 W 2 consisting of nanolamellar BCC and FCC phases. The direct lattice imaging of 3D-printed samples shows the Kurdjumov–Sachs (K–S) orientation relation {111} FCC parallel to {110} BCC planes in the dual-phase lamellae. Unlike traditional iron and steels, this alloy shows an irreversible BCC-to-FCC phase transformation under high pressures. The nanolamellar morphology is maintained after pressure cycling to 30 GPa, and nano-diffraction studies show both layers to be in the FCC phase. The chemical compositions of the dual-phase lamellae after pressure recovery remain unchanged, suggesting a diffusion-less BCC–FCC transformation in this EHEA. The lattice imaging of the pressure-recovered sample does not show any specific orientation relation between the two resulting FCC phases, indicating that many grain orientations are produced during the BCC–FCC phase transformation. Molecular dynamics simulations on phase transformation in a nanolamellar BCC/FCC in K–S orientation show that phase transformation from BCC to FCC is completed under high pressures, and the FCC phase is retained on decompression aided by the stable interfaces. Our work elucidates the irreversible phase transformation under static compression, providing an understanding of the orientation relationships in 3-D printed EHEA under high pressures.

Gas–Phase Synthesis of 3–Vinylcyclopropene via the Crossed Beam Reaction of the Methylidyne Radical (CH; X 2 Π) with 1,3–Butadiene (CH 2 CHCHCH 2 ; X 1 Ag)

The crossed molecular beam reactions of the methylidyne radical (CH; X 2 Π) with 1,3-butadiene (CH 2 CHCHCH 2 ; X 1 Ag) along with their (partially) deuterated counterparts were performed at collision energies of 20.8 kJ mol -1 under single collision conditions. Combining our laboratory data with ab initio calculations, we reveal that the methylidyne radical may add barrierlessly to the terminal carbon atom and/or carbon-carbon double bond of 1,3-butadiene, leading to doublet C 5 H 7 intermediates with life times longer than the rotation periods. Furthermore, these collision complexes undergo non-statistical unimolecular decomposition through hydrogen atom emission yielding the cyclic cis- and trans-3-vinyl-cyclopropene products with reaction exoergicities of 119±42 kJ mol -1 . Since this reaction is barrierless, exoergic, and all transition states are located below the energy of the separated reactants, these cyclic C 5 H 6 products are predicted to be accessed even in low-temperature environments, such as in hydrocarbon-rich atmospheres of planets and cold molecular clouds such as TMC-1.

Mechanochemical α to β phase transition of U 3 O 8

Recognized as the most stable phase of uranium oxide, α-U 3 O 8 is widely used throughout the nuclear fuel cycle for safe storage and transportation. There is, however, a lack of understanding of the thermodynamic relationship between α-U 3 O 8 and its polymorph, β-U 3 O 8 . This research contributes new knowledge regarding the kinetics and mechanism of a previously described mechanochemical phase transition between the α- and β-U 3 O 8 polymorphs to improve the understanding of their thermodynamic relationship. In this work, tumble milling of α-U 3 O 8 using different milling media shows an ingrowth of the β-phase over time, with an observed correlation between media density, percent conversion and lattice strain. Anisotropic peak broadening observed within collected X-ray diffraction powder patterns suggests the preservation of uranium polyhedral layered sheets throughout the milling process. Preservation of the sheets implies a shear-induced slip mechanism occurring through in-plane shifting of uranium polyhedra along lattice planes perpendicular to the polyhedral sheets.

Coexisting Phases in NaNbO 3 Thin Films Influenced by Epitaxial Strain and Size Effects

Coherently strained NaNbO 3 thin films are synthesized across a range of thicknesses, enabling the study of size effects under epitaxial strain in antiferroelectric thin films without relaxation. Competing antiferroelectric‐ferroelectric phases are observed, leading to the stabilization of phase coexistence, multistate switching with strong retention and fatigue performance, and potential avenues to boost energy storage properties.

Thermal Conductivity of β-Phase Ga 2 O 3 and (Al x Ga 1– x ) 2 O 3 Heteroepitaxial Thin Films

Heteroepitaxy of β-phase gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 ) thin films on foreign substrates shows promise for the development of next-generation deep ultraviolet solar blind photodetectors and power electronic devices. In this work, the influences of the film thickness and crystallinity on the thermal conductivity of ($\bar{2}01$)-oriented β-Ga 2 O 3 heteroepitaxial thin films were investigated. Unintentionally doped β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were grown on c-plane sapphire substrates with off-axis angles of 0° and 6° toward $\langle$$11\bar{2}0$$\rangle$ via metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) and low-pressure chemical vapor deposition. The surface morphology and crystal quality of the β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The thermal conductivities of the β-Ga 2 O 3 films were measured via time-domain thermoreflectance. The interface quality was studied using scanning transmission electron microscopy. The measured thermal conductivities of the submicron-thick β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were relatively low as compared to the intrinsic bulk value. The measured thin film thermal conductivities were compared with the Debye–Callaway model incorporating phononic parameters derived from first-principles calculations. The comparison suggests that the reduction in the thin film thermal conductivity can be partially attributed to the enhanced phonon-boundary scattering when the film thickness decreases. They were found to be a strong function of not only the layer thickness but also the film quality, resulting from growth on substrates with different offcut angles. Growth of β-Ga 2 O 3 films on 6° offcut sapphire substrates was found to result in higher crystallinity and thermal conductivity than films grown on on-axis c-plane sapphire. However, the β-Ga 2 O 3 films grown on 6° offcut sapphire exhibit a lower thermal boundary conductance at the β-Ga 2 O 3 /sapphire heterointerface. In addition, the thermal conductivity of MOVPE-grown ($\bar{2}01$)-oriented β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 thin films with Al compositions ranging from 2% to 43% was characterized. Because of phonon-alloy disorder scattering, the β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 films exhibit lower thermal conductivities (2.8–4.7 W/m∙K) than the β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films. The dominance of the alloy disorder scattering in β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 is further evidenced by the weak temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity. This work provides fundamental insight into the physical interactions that govern phonon transport within heteroepitaxially grown β-phase Ga 2 O 3 and (Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 thin films and lays the groundwork for the thermal modeling and design of β-Ga 2 O 3 electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Phase transition mechanism and bandgap engineering of Sb2S3 at gigapascal pressures

Abstract Earth-abundant antimony trisulfide (Sb 2 S 3 ), or simply antimonite, is a promising material for capturing natural energies like solar power and heat flux. The layered structure, held up by weak van-der Waals forces, induces anisotropic behaviors in carrier transportation and thermal expansion. Here, we used stress as mechanical stimuli to destabilize the layered structure and observed the structural phase transition to a three-dimensional (3D) structure. We combined in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations to study the evolution of structure and bandgap width up to 20.1 GPa. The optical band gap energy of Sb 2 S 3 followed a two-step hierarchical sequence at approximately 4 and 11 GPa. We also revealed that the first step of change is mainly caused by the redistribution of band states near the conduction band maximum. The second transition is controlled by an isostructural phase transition, with collapsed layers and the formation of a higher coordinated bulky structure. The band gap reduced from 1.73 eV at ambient to 0.68 eV at 15 GPa, making it a promising thermoelectric material under high pressure.

Phonon spectrum in the spin-Peierls phase of CuGeO 3

CuGeO 3 has long been studied as a prototypical example of the spin-Peierls transition in a 𝑆 = 1/2 Heisenberg chain. Despite intensive investigation of this quasi-one-dimensional material, systematic measurements and calculations of the phonon excitations in the dimerized phase have not to date been possible, leaving certain aspects of the spin-Peierls phenomenon unresolved. We perform state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) calculations to compute the electronic structure and phonon dynamics in the low-temperature dimerized phase. We also perform high-resolution neutron spectroscopy to measure the full phonon spectrum over multiple Brillouin zones. We find excellent agreement between our numerical and experimental results that extend to all measurement temperatures. Notable features of our phonon spectra include a number of steeply dispersive modes, nonmonotonic dispersion features, and specific phonon anticrossings, which we relate to the mode eigenvectors. By calculating the magnetic interactions within DFT and studying the effects of different phonon modes on the superexchange paths, we discuss the possibility of observing spin-phonon hybridization effects in experiments performed both in and out of equilibrium.

Possible continuous transition from fractional quantum Hall to stripe phase at ν e = 7 / 3

We study the phase diagram of the ν e = 7/3 state in the N=1 Landau level in the presence of band mass anisotropy. Using the density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder geometry, we find a continuous transition from the topologically ordered Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state to a stripe phase with a period of approximately five and a half magnetic lengths. The transition is driven by the condensation of the magnetoroton mode which becomes gapless at the critical point. We interpret the transition within the composite-boson theory as the onset of stripe order in a superfluid background, resulting from the roton mode going soft.

An Extratropical Pathway for the Madden–Julian Oscillation’s Influence on North Atlantic Tropical Cyclones

Abstract This study investigates the combined impacts of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and extratropical anticyclonic Rossby wave breaking (AWB) on subseasonal Atlantic tropical cyclone (TC) activity and their physical connections. Our results show that during MJO phases 2–3 (enhanced Indian Ocean convection) and 6–7 (enhanced tropical Pacific convection), there are significant changes in basinwide TC activity. The MJO and AWB collaborate to suppress basinwide TC activity during phases 6–7 but not during phases 2–3. During phases 6–7, when AWB occurs, various TC metrics including hurricanes, accumulated cyclone energy, and rapid intensification probability decrease by ∼50%–80%. Simultaneously, large-scale environmental variables, like vertical wind shear, precipitable water, and sea surface temperatures become extremely unfavorable for TC formation and intensification, compared to periods characterized by suppressed AWB activity during the same MJO phases. Further investigation reveals that AWB events during phases 6–7 occur in concert with the development of a stronger anticyclone in the lower troposphere, which transports more dry, stable extratropical air equatorward, and drives enhanced tropical SST cooling. As a result, individual AWB events in phases 6–7 can disturb the development of surrounding TCs to a greater extent than their phases 2–3 counterparts. The influence of the MJO on AWB over the western subtropical Atlantic can be attributed to the modulation of the convectively forced Rossby wave source over the tropical eastern Pacific. A significant number of Rossby waves initiating from this region during phases 5–6 propagate into the subtropical North Atlantic, preceding the occurrence of AWB events in phases 6–7.
