Board 160: Empowerment in STEM Day: Introducing High School Girls to Careers at National Laboratories (Work in Progress)

In the US, women are still vastly underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers, and various studies have shown that girls' interest in STEM careers wane as high school progresses. With this challenge in mind, Empowerment in STEM Day was organized by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), hosting 47 high school students from 6 public high schools in the area. This one-day event was designed and executed through a collaboration between the Women's Support and Empowerment Council (WSEC) and the K-12 STEM Education and Outreach Program at LBNL. The main goal of this program was to provide high school girls, who have little access to STEM career role-models in their immediate surroundings with insights into how a career in STEM looks like. Invitations to participate in the program were sent out to six local high schools in the Bay area asking educators to identify female students that were interested in STEM. Each high school participant was provided with an opportunity to experience a national laboratory environment, learn more about summer workshops and paid summer research internship opportunities at LBNL for high school students, and engage directly with LBNL's employees through job shadow, career mapping and speed networking sessions. In this paper, we will present an overview of the event organization, challenges faced during planning and execution of the event, discuss the lessons learned from the first Empowerment in STEM Day and suggest strategies for incorporating such events at other national laboratories and academic institutions as part of a vital effort into recruiting and retaining more high school girls in STEM-based careers. Additionally, since this was the first in-person event hosted by LBNL's K-12 Program after the pandemic, we will also share the strategies implemented at the event so as to engage both remote and on-site employees as volunteers.

Progress in the design of the future circular collider FCC-ee interaction region

In this paper we discuss the latest developments for the FCC-ee interaction region layout, which represents one of the key ingredients to establish the feasibility of the FCC-ee. The collider has to achieve extremely high luminosities over a wide range of center-of-mass energies with two or four interaction points. The complex final focus hosted in the detector region has to be carefully designed, and the impact of beam losses and of any type of synchrotron radiation generated in the interaction region, including beamstrahlung, have to be evaluated in detail with simulations. We give an overview of the progress of the whole machine-detector-interface-related studies, among which are the updated mechanical model of the interaction region, the plans for a novel R&D activity of a IR mockup which is just starting, the collimation scheme and evaluation of beam induced backgrounds in the detectors, evaluation of radiation dose in the experimental area, and MDI integration with the detector.

Progress Towards RF Conditioning of Low-Loss Couplers for a Conduction-Cooled Cryomodule

This work presents current progress on the conditioning of two new 25 kW couplers optimized for use in a compact, conduction-cooled SRF cryomodule. A connecting waveguide, previously used for conditioning the 805 MHz SNS couplers, was altered for use at 915 MHz. The necessary modifications were determined via RF modeling, while thermal analysis results identified additional cooling requirements during RF conditioning and provided insight about potential higher-power operation. Initial low-power conditioning will be performed with a 2.5 kW solid-state amplifier, with plans to use an industrial magnetron for RF conditioning at 25 kW in the near future.

Progress towards halo modeling at the SNS Beam Test Facility

The SNS beam test facility is a model of the SNS front end (source through medium-energy transport). On-going work at the BTF focuses on accurate modeling of the beam distribution to enable the prediction of halo losses (>100 parts per million). This presentation will discuss the latest progress towards this goal, including recent results after a reconfiguration of the test beamline. Good agreement within the 90% beam core is shown for a 30 mA beam at 2.5 MeV.

Progress Towards an Expanded Search for Neutral-Current Delta Radiative Decays in MicroBooNE

In this note, we present progress toward an expanded search for neutral current Delta radiative decays (NC $\Delta \rightarrow N\gamma$) in MicroBooNE. We present sensitivities for several tests of the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess (LEE) under NC $\Delta \rightarrow N\gamma$ scaling hypotheses, with significantly enhanced sensitivity relative to previous tests. These selections can also be used for additional single photon searches in the future, including searches which target more specific hadronic final states and particular regions of shower kinematic phase space.

Progressive Hedging Decomposition for Solutions of Large-Scale Process Family Design Problems

In previous work, we have introduced a mathematical model for solving a discretized version of the process family design problem. This involves two sets of decision variables. One set selects which unit module designs are included in the process platform out of a candidate set of options; the other set determines which of these unit module designs are assigned to each variant. In this work, we exploit a parallelized Progressive Hedging (PH) algorithm to solve even larger scale design problems. PH is a well-known algorithm traditionally used to solve stochastic programming problems. While our problem is not a two-stage stochastic programming problem, the structure is similar, and it can be directly mapped to the PH approach, which we employ here to solve this deterministic optimization problem. We decompose our problem by process variant. We treat the platform unit module design variables as first-stage and the assignment of unit module designs to variants as second-stage, solving the problem using mpi-sppy. We demonstrate this approach on case studies of CC, water desalination, and refrigeration.

Current Progress on the High-Field Cable Testing Facility at Fermilab

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) is constructing a new High Field Vertical Magnet Test Facility (HFVMTF) with capabilities comparable to the European facilities EDIPO and FRESCA2. The facility, located at Fermilab, will feature a background magnetic field of 15 T, generated by a magnet provided by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The HFVMTF will support two U.S. national programs under the DOE Office of Science: the U.S. Fusion Energy Science (FES) program and the Magnet Development Program (MDP). It will enable the testing of HTS samples in high magnetic fields across a wide range of temperatures and facilitate the development of hybrid magnets combining LTS and HTS superconductors. This paper presents an overview of the current progress in constructing the facility, including updates on the test cryostat, power supplies, and systems for quench protection and monitoring.

Fusion Materials Semiannual Progress Report for the Period Ending June 30, 2024

This is the seventy-sixth in a series of semiannual technical progress reports on fusion materials science activity supported by the Fusion Energy Sciences Program of the U.S. Department of Energy. It covers the period ending June 30, 2024. This report focuses on research addressing the effects on materials properties and performance of exposure to the neutronic, thermal and chemical environments anticipated in the chambers of fusion experiments and energy systems. This research is a major element of the national effort to establish the materials knowledge base for an economically and environmentally attractive fusion energy source. Research activities on issues related to the interaction of materials with plasmas are reported separately. The results reported are the products of a national effort involving a number of national laboratories and universities. A large fraction of this work, particularly in relation to fission reactor irradiations, is carried out collaboratively with partners in Japan, Russia, and the European Union. The purpose of this series of reports is to provide a working technical record for the use of program participants, and to provide a means of communicating the efforts of fusion materials scientists to the broader fusion community, both nationally and worldwide. This report has been compiled by Stephanie Melton, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Her efforts, and the efforts of the many persons who made technical contributions, are gratefully acknowledged.
