An indium-based microporous metal–organic framework with unique three-way rod-shaped secondary building units for efficient methane and hydrogen storage

A novel microporous indium-based MOF material with unique 3-way rod-shaped secondary building units (SBUs), UTSA-22, was reported and exhibited high methane (CH 4 ) and hydrogen (H 2 ) storage. At 298 K and 65 bar, the total CH 4 volumetric uptake of UTSA-22 is 174 cm 3 (STP) cm -3 . Moreover, UTSA-22 shows a high CH 4 working capacity of 146 cm 3 (STP) cm -3 in a pressure range of 5–65 bar at 298 K. Additionally, UTSA-22 shows a high H 2 gravimetric storage capacity (1.2 wt%) at 298 K and 100 bar.

Moderate-temperature solution-processed synthesis of incommensurate Sr 8/7 TiS 3 thin films and rod-shaped nanocrystals

The chalcogenide perovskite family has been steadily gaining increasing attention from the research community due to its optoelectronic properties and potential for diverse applications. While BaZrS 3 and BaTiS 3 have been the most extensively studied, other promising compounds in this family, such as Sr x TiS 3 (1.05 < x < 1.22), are now being explored for various optical, optoelectronic, and energy storage applications. However, challenges remain in achieving the low-temperature synthesis of Sr x TiS 3 . In this study, we report, for the first time, the synthesis of Sr x TiS 3 nanocrystals at temperatures below 400 °C. The synthesized nanocrystals exhibit a rod-like morphology. Additionally, we have developed solution-processing routes to synthesize phase-pure Sr x TiS 3 thin films, marking the first reported instance of such films, at temperatures below 600 °C. We also demonstrate the solid-state synthesis of Sr x TiS 3 powder below 600 °C. Our work paves the way for new and exciting application avenues for Sr x TiS 3 .

The advancing wave front on a sloping channel covered by a rod canopy following an instantaneous dam break

The drag coefficient Cd for a rigid and uniformly distributed rod canopy covering a sloping channel following the instantaneous collapse of a dam was examined using flume experiments. The measurements included space x and time t high resolution images of the water surface h(x, t) for multiple channel bed slopes So and water depths behind the dam Ho along with drag estimates provided by sequential load cells. Using these data, an analysis of the Saint-Venant equation (SVE) for the front speed was conducted using the diffusive wave approximation. An inferred Cd=0.4 from the h(x, t) data near the advancing front region, also confirmed by load cell measurements, is much reduced relative to its independently measured steady-uniform flow case. This finding suggests that drag reduction mechanisms associated with transients and flow disturbances are more likely to play a dominant role when compared to conventional sheltering or blocking effects on Cd examined in uniform flow. The increased air volume entrained into the advancing wave front region as determined from an inflow–outflow volume balance partly explains the Cd reduction from unity.

Crystal truncation rods from miscut surfaces with alternating terminations

Miscut surfaces of layered crystals can exhibit a stair-like sequence of terraces having periodic variation in their atomic structure. For hexagonal close-packed and related crystal structures with an αβαβ stacking sequence, there have been long-standing questions regarding how the differences in adatom attachment kinetics at the steps separating the terraces affect the fractional coverage of α vs. β termination during crystal growth. To demonstrate how surface X-ray scattering can help address these questions, we develop a general theory for the intensity distributions along crystal truncation rods (CTRs) for miscut surfaces with a combination of two terminations. We consider half-unit-cell-height steps, and variation of the coverages of the terraces above each step. Example calculations are presented for the GaN (0001) surface with various reconstructions. These show which CTR positions are most sensitive to the fractional coverage of the two terminations. We compare the CTR profiles for exactly oriented surfaces to those for vicinal surfaces having a small miscut angle, and investigate the circumstances under which the CTR profile for an exactly oriented surface is equal to the sum of the intensities of the corresponding family of CTRs for a miscut surface.

Ultrafast dense DNA functionalization of quantum dots and rods for scalable 2D array fabrication with nanoscale precision

Scalable fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) arrays of quantum dots (QDs) and quantum rods (QRs) with nanoscale precision is required for numerous device applications. However, self-assembly–based fabrication of such arrays using DNA origami typically suffers from low yield due to inefficient QD and QR DNA functionalization. In addition, it is challenging to organize solution-assembled DNA origami arrays on 2D device substrates while maintaining their structural fidelity. Here, we reduced manufacturing time from a few days to a few minutes by preparing high-density DNA-conjugated QDs/QRs from organic solution using a dehydration and rehydration process. We used a surface-assisted large-scale assembly (SALSA) method to construct 2D origami lattices directly on solid substrates to template QD and QR 2D arrays with orientational control, with overall loading yields exceeding 90%. Our fabrication approach enables the scalable, high fidelity manufacturing of 2D addressable QDs and QRs with nanoscale orientational and spacing control for functional 2D photonic devices.

Power distribution estimation method for SMR using ex-core detectors: experimental demonstration by plural control rod patterns at KUCA

The power distribution estimation method based on the ex-core detectors, or PHOEBE, was demonstrated at Kyoto University Critical Assembly, KUCA. Generally, core monitoring systems use in-core neutron detectors. Since inside the core is a harsh environment, the maintainability and reliability of the detectors are deteriorated. On the other hand, the environment outside the core is milder: core monitoring by the ex-core detectors improves the maintainability and reliability especially for small modular reactors and micro-reactors. However, neutron information from the inner region of the core is lost at the ex-core detectors. To recover the information, the authors proposed to utilize the power correlation between the fuel regions. PHOEBE concept was demonstrated at KUCA with distorted power distributions simulated by control rod patterns. The relative power distribution estimated by PHOEBE agreed with that calculated by Monte Carlo simulation code MVP. PHOEBE approximately reproduced the trend of the distorted power distributions calculated by MVP code. By contrast, the case of without power correlation between fuel regions produced significant different power distributions. Therefore, the advantage of considering the power correlation between fuel regions was also demonstrated. (authors)

Initial Conditioning of the Rod-style RFQ

The RFQ test stand will allow new sources to be tested and will provide information on the performance of our RFQ designs. The RFQ must sustain the high peak power that will be necessary for bunching and accelerating beam, and that peak power must be sustained at a duty factor that is higher than other facilities that use similar rod-style RFQs. The conditioning of the RFQ allows both requirements to be tested, and in addition the intricacies of its operation are discovered and can be corrected for future work. In addition, the conditioning procedure was able to be done concurrently with the source development.

Sister Rod Destructive Examinations (FY23): Appendix H: Instron Uncertainty Calculations

This document discusses the uncertainty of measurements associated with the Instron system and the resulting uncertainty in the acquired measurements and calculated information. The primary parameters measured during the Instron test include the applied load and specimen deflection. The associated primary calculated parameters are the maximum beam deflection at the rod’s axial center and modulus of elasticity. Secondary calculated parameters include specimen stress and strain amplitudes, as well as flexural rigidity. The uncertainty associated with the primary and secondary calculated parameters was investigated based on the known uncertainty in the measured parameters.

Reassessment of Boiling Water Reactor Rod Cusping Capability of VERA-MPACT

This technical report assesses the current modeling capabilities of the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) for minimizing control rod cusping in boiling water reactors. Assessment is performed on a 10 × 10 General Electric (GE)-14 assembly as well as a simplified version of the same assembly. Runs were performed using VERA for three available cusping treatments in the Michigan PArallel Characteristics Transport (MPACT) code: no treatment, subplane treatment, and fitted polynomial correction treatment. Subplane treatment is discussed, but specific results are not provided because of failures in the method of implementation for boiling water reactors.
