The manufacturing of low loss chalcogenide glasses (ChGs) for optoelectronic applications is ultimately defined by the concentration of impurities present in starting materials or imparted via processing. We describe a rapid method for purifying metallic starting materials in As 2 Se 3 glass where oxide reduction is correlated to optical and physical properties. Specifically, As-O reduction enhances the glass’ dual-band optical transparency proportional to the extent (13-fold reduction) of oxide reduction, and is accompanied by a change in density and hardness associated with changes in matrix bonding. A significant modification of the glass’ index and LWIR Abbe number is reported highlighting the significant impact purification has on material dispersion control required in optical designs.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) contracted the National Ecological Observatory Network Airborne Observation Platform (NEON AOP) to observe watersheds of interest near Crested Butte, CO with remotely sensed data including imaging spectroscopy. The flight box design encompassed the watersheds, and flight design targeted a minimum of 30% overlap between adjacent flight lines. The total area surveyed was 334 km2 across 72 lines. Flight lines were oriented north-south for consistency in solar illumination geometry. Seven days were required to cover the flight area. Some areas were flown additional times to improve data quality or temporal coincidence between airborne acquisitions and field sampling. In total, 102 lines were collected and can be downloaded here: https://portal.nersc.gov/wfsfa/doi-10-15485-1617204/. The instrument used for the acquisition was an Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer - Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG), which records radiance within 426 contiguous spectral bands in the wavelength range from 380 to 2510 nm. The instrument was flown at a target aboveground altitude of 1000 m for a processed data spatial resolution of 1 m. These data are non-orthorectified, radiance data that require further processing prior to use as a surface reflectance data set.
Measurements of full-range (350–2500 nm) canopy spectral reflectance of Arctic plant species, plots, and transects at the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment Arctic (NGEE Arctic) Teller Mile Marker (MM27) and Kougarok Fire Complex (KFC) sites, Seward Peninsula, Alaska. Spectra were collected in July 2022 using a handheld SVC HR-2014i spectroradiometer. All spectra were collected as calibrated surface radiance and converted to surface reflectance using 99.99% reflective Spectralon white reference standard. This data package includes unprocessed instrument output of the spectra signals (.sig) and, for some canopy measurements, photographs of the target taken by the SVC instrument camera or handheld digital camera (.jpg), GPS locations and file metadata (.csv).The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a 15-year research effort (2012-2027) to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska.Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).
This dataset comprises radiocarbon and geochemical measurements from peat and porewater samples collected across various depths at a site in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The study focuses on carbon cycling dynamics in tropical peatlands by examining carbon isotopic signatures (¹⁴C and ¹³C) and elemental compositions of bulk peat, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and methane (CH₄). Key parameters include radiocarbon ages and isotopic ratios (δ¹³C) of bulk peat, concentrations of carbon (%C) and nitrogen (%N), and radiocarbon content of porewater gases and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The data provide insights into the vertical and spatial distribution of carbon sources and possible preservation and decomposition processes within tropical peat profiles, offering critical information for understanding carbon storage and greenhouse gas emissions in these ecosystems. This dataset is comprised of one main data folder containing (1) file-level metadata; (2) data dictionary; (3) field metadata; (4) carbon isotopic signatures (¹⁴C and ¹³C); (5) concentrations of carbon (%C) and nitrogen (%N); (6) radiocarbon content of porewater carbon dioxide (CO₂), and methane (CH₄) ; (7) porewater DOC; (8) bulk peat sampling protocol; (9) porewater sampling protocol; (10) porewater gas collection methods; and (11) gas extraction methods. All files are in .csv format and can be opened with any software that supports this file types.

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how a novel, elusive, and diffuse biological threat can engender uncertainty and misinformation, and it underscored the need for flexible analytical modalities agnostic to the identity of biological material. Yet even before the pandemic recognition of the limitations of the current, list-based approach, which focuses on known pathogens and biotoxins, and of the importance of agent-agnostic biodetection, was growing within the biosecurity community. In a 2018 report on “Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology,” for example, the National Academy of Sciences stated that “an overreliance on the Select Agent List is a systematic weakness affecting many aspects of the United States’ current biodefense mitigation capability." More recently, a group of biodefense researchers proposed the identification and adoption of “bioagent-agnostic signatures (BASs)” as a way of detecting and characterizing not only existing agents but also novel ones, an approach they believe will “enable a more flexible and resilient biodefense posture." Indeed, the future of biodetection requires us to begin developing novel analytics that can identify anomalies and/or characteristics that indicate a potential threat, whether known or unknown, without looking for a specific signature that has been identified previously. To assess potential threats more rapidly, it is critical to develop agnostic artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) systems that can be employed for real-time assessment of the nature and source of a perturbation. Such systems should be multiscale and multi-dimensional, integrating sensor data from a range of biological, chemical, and physical application spaces. Emerging deep learning (DL) models demonstrate exceptional promise for identification of discriminatory features within multi-dimensional datasets. DL models have the capacity to recognize and encode highly complex patterns in a wide range of input data modalities, including images, text, and biological/chemical/physical spectra. As such, they can execute a wide range of assessments and determinations that have traditionally required a human operator.
