Interactive handling of TV and range data for remotely controlled systems

The sensory subsystem of the JPL robotics project is described. The first sensory instrument is a pair of TV cameras, which provides a stereo view of the area of interest. The second is a laser range finder, which can be aimed in a requested direction and measure distance to a surface point that reflects the beam back. Both instruments are controlled by and are interfaced to computer. The calibration process and basic applications to obtain measurements of the external environment are described.

Analytical formulation of selected activities of the remote manipulator system

Existing analysis of Orbiter-RMS-Payload kinematics were surveyed, including equations dealing with the two body kinematics in the presence of a massless RMS and compares analytical explicit solutions with numerical solutions. For the following operational phases of the RMS numerical demonstration, problems are provided: (1) payload capture; (2) payload stowage and removal from cargo bay; and (3) payload deployment. The equation of motion provided accounted for RMS control forces and torque moments and could be extended to RMS flexibility and control loop simulation without increasing the degrees of freedom of the two body system.

Inferring nutrient loading of estuarine systems by remote sensing of aquatic vegetation

THe use of remote sensing to record algal and vascular aquatic plant growths in estuarine waters is discussed. A technique is proposed that uses a combination of data to hierarchically classify watersheds with regard to severity of potential pollution. Specific nonpoint sources of nutrients in tributaries of the watershed are identified with lower altitude photography of vegetation and selected ground sampling. It is concluded that excessive growths of some aquatic plants may be related to nutrient pollution.

Analytical techniques for the study of some parameters of multispectral scanner systems for remote sensing

The author has identified the following significant results. The concept of average mutual information in the received spectral random process about the spectral scene was developed. Techniques amenable to implementation on a digital computer were also developed to make the required average mutual information calculations. These techniques required identification of models for the spectral response process of scenes. Stochastic modeling techniques were adapted for use. These techniques were demonstrated on empirical data from wheat and vegetation scenes.

Adaptive guidance and control for future remote sensing systems

A unique approach to onboard processing was developed that is capable of acquiring high quality image data for users in near real time. The approach is divided into two steps: the development of an onboard cloud detection system; and the development of a landmark tracker. The results of these two developments are outlined and the requirements of an operational guidance and control system capable of providing continuous estimation of the sensor boresight position are summarized.

Prime agricultural land monitoring and assessment component of the California Integrated Remote Sensing System

The use of digital LANDSAT techniques for monitoring agricultural land use conversions was studied. Two study areas were investigated: one in Ventura County and the other in Fresno County (California). Ventura test site investigations included the use of three dates of LANDSAT data to improve classification performance beyond that previously obtained using single data techniques. The 9% improvement is considered highly significant. Also developed and demonstrated using Ventura County data is an automated cluster labeling procedure, considered a useful example of vertical data integration. Fresno County results for a single data LANDSAT classification paralleled those found in Ventura, demonstrating that the urban/rural fringe zone of most interest is a difficult environment to classify using LANDSAT data. A general raster to vector conversion program was developed to allow LANDSAT classification products to be transferred to an operational county level geographic information system in Fresno.

Radiometric considerations in remote sensing systems

All sensors systems designed to acquire quantitative data undergo radiometric calibration. The types and potential accuracies of calibration are discussed as well as the needs for calibration in the practical application of sensors. The recent and ongoing experience with the shuttle multispectral infrared radiometer is used as a reference.

The human role in space. Volume 3: Generalizations on human roles in space

The human role in space was studied. The role and the degree of direct involvement of humans that will be required in future space missions, was investigated. Valid criteria for allocating functional activities between humans and machines were established. The technology requirements, ecnomics, and benefits of the human presence in space were examined. Factors which affect crew productivity include: internal architecture; crew support; crew activities; LVA systems; IVA/EVA interfaces; and remote systems management. The accomplished work is reported and the data and analyses from which the study results are derived are included. The results provide information and guidelines to enable NASA program managers and decision makers to establish, early in the design process, the most cost effective design approach for future space programs, through the optimal application of unique human skills and capabilities in space.

Track and capture of the orbiter with the space station remote manipulator system

Results of the first study using the real-time, man-in-the-loop Systems Engineering Simulator (SES) for track and capture of the Space Shuttle Orbiter with the space station manipulator are presented. The objectives include evaluation of the operational coordination required between the orbiter pilot and the space station manipulator operator, evaluation of the locations and required number of closed-circuit television cameras, and evaluation of the orbiter grapple fixture clearance geometry. The SES is a premium quality real-time facility with full fidelity orbiter and space station crew workstations and cockpits.

Standard remote manipulator system docking target augmentation for automated docking

A docking target is provided for use in automated docking of a first vehicle on which the target is located. The target comprises a pair of laterally extending arm portions lying in substantially the same plane and a central post extending outwardly from the plane of the arm portions. At least three reflectors are located on the target. Two of the reflectors are located at the outboard ends of the arms portions and another reflector is located at the end of the central post. In an important embodiment, the reflectors comprise individual pieces of retroreflective tape. The reflectors, when viewed from the front of the target, are aligned along the longitudinal center line of the target, and can take a number of different shapes including circular or square.
