Energetics of CO 2 and H 2 O adsorption on alkaline earth metal doped TiO 2

The process of CO 2 and H 2 O adsorption on the surface of nano-oxide semiconductors is important in the overall performance of artificial photosynthesis and other applications. In this study, we explored the thermodynamics of CO 2 and H 2 O adsorption on TiO 2 as a function of surface chemistry. We applied gas adsorption calorimetry to investigate the energetics of adsorption of those molecules on the surface of anatase nanoparticles. In an attempt to increase TiO 2 surface affinity to CO 2 and H 2 O, TiO 2 was doped with alkaline earth metals (MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO) by manipulating the chemical synthesis. Adsorption studies using diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy at different temperatures indicate that due to the segregation of alkaline earth metals on the surface of TiO 2 nanoparticles, both CO 2 and subsequent H2O adsorption amounts could be increased. CO 2 adsorbs in two different manners, forming carbonates which can be removed at temperatures lower than 700 °C, and a more stable linear adsorption that remains even at 700 °C. Additionally to the surface energetic effects, doping also increased specific surface area, resulting in further improvement in net gas adsorption.

One-electron redox kinetics of aqueous transition metal couples Zn 2+/+ , Co 2+/+ , and Ni 2+/+ using pulse radiolysis

The one-electron redox potentials for aqueous metal couples Co 2+/+ and Ni 2+/+ have been investigated by using pulse radiolysis using their reactions with a series of reference compounds to establish the most positive upper limits of E 0 . Experiments with Zn + were also carried out to confirm the characteristic shape of the expected reduction kinetics. Both formate ions and t-BuOH were employed to scavenge ˙OH radicals and ˙H atoms. Kinetics and fitted first and second order reaction rates have been reported for reactions with methyl viologen, fluorescein, Ru(NH 3 ) 6 3+ , Co(en) 3 2+ , Co(sepulcrate) 3+ , Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , Cr(bpy)33+, and Ni(Me 6 [14]4,11-dieneN4) 2+ . Previous work demonstrated that both Co 2+ and Ni 2+ can be reduced by CO 2 ˙- radicals, giving a negative E 0 limit of -1.9 V vs. SHE. A definite reaction of Ni + with fluorescein di-anions provides a new upper limit of the Ni 2+/+ couple as -0.906 V vs. SHE. The reaction of Co + with Ru(bpy) 3 2+ has been confirmed, giving E 0 = -1.3 V vs. SHE as a rigorous upper limit of the Co 2+/+ couple. In the case of Co 2+/+ , kinetics were complicated by a self-catalyzed metal clustering phenomenon. Initiation rate constants of this process have also been reported.

Search for η c ( 2 S ) → 2 ( π + π − ) and improved measurement of χ c J → 2 ( π + π − )

We search for the hadronic decay η c ( 2 S ) → 2 ( π + π − ) in the ψ ( 3686 ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) radiative decay using ( 27.12 ± 0.14 ) × 10 8 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. No significant signal is found, and the upper limit of B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → γ η c ( 2 S ) ] B [ η c ( 2 S ) → 2 ( π + π − ) ] is determined to be 1.43 × 10 − 6 at the 90% confidence level. Using ψ ( 3686 ) → γ χ c J transitions, we also measure the branching fractions of B [ χ c J ( J = 0 , 1 , 2 ) → 2 ( π + π − ) ] , which are B [ χ c 0 → 2 ( π + π − ) ] = ( 2.127 ± 0.002 ( stat ) ± 0.101 ( syst ) ) % , B [ χ c 1 → 2 ( π + π − ) ] = ( 0.685 ± 0.001 ( stat ) ± 0.031 ( syst ) ) % , and B [ χ c 2 → 2 ( π + π − ) ] = ( 1.153 ± 0.001 ( stat ) ± 0.063 ( syst ) ) % . Unraveling the Structure and Composition of Li 4 Mn 2 O 4.5 (Li 2 O·Li 0.667 Mn 1.333 O 2 ) Electrodes for Lithium Batteries Using a High-Temperature Synthesis Approach

This paper addresses the debate about the composition and structure of a lithium-rich manganese oxide electrode with a fully disordered rock salt component, Li 4 Mn 2 O 5 (or Li 2 O·2LiMnO 2 ), first reported by Freire et al. in 2016; it is typically prepared by a high-energy ball milling procedure. It has now been demonstrated that, when prepared at 800°C, the formula of this compound is Li 4 Mn 2 O 4.5 , alternatively Li 2 O·Li 0.667 Mn 1.333 O 2 , or close thereto. The cubic, disordered Li 0.667 Mn 1.333 O 2 (or Li 0.333 Mn 0.667 O) rock salt component, in which the manganese ions adopt an average oxidation state of 2.5+, transforms to a clearly-defined spinel configuration during electrochemical cycling. The electrochemical activation process that occurs during the initial charge reaction includes the oxidation of the manganese ions by oxygen released by the Li 2 O component between 4.5 and 4.6 V. In complete contrast, nickel- and nickel-cobalt-substituted electrodes, such as Li 2 O·2LiMn 0.5 Ni 0.5 O 2 (Li 4 MnNiO 5 ) and Li 2 O·2LiMn 0.475 Ni 0.475 Co 0.050 O 2 (Li 4 Mn 0.95 Ni 0.95 Co 0.10 O 5 ), in which the manganese ions adopt a tetravalent state, have completely disordered rock salt components that are electrochemically inactive.

Substituted 1,1,1-triaryl 2,2,2-trifluoroethanes and processes for their synthesis

Synthetic procedures to tetraalkyls, tetraacids, and dianhydrides substituted 1,1,1-triaryl 2,2,2-trifluoroethanes which comprises: (1) 1,1-bis(dialkylaryl) 1-aryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, (2) 1,1-bis(dicarboxyaryl) 1-aryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, or (3) cyclic dianhydride or diamine of 1,1-bis(dialkylaryl) 1-aryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethanes. The synthesis of (1) is accomplished by the condensation reaction of an aryltrifluoromethyl ketone with a dialkylaryl compound. The synthesis of (2) is accomplished by oxidation of (1). The synthesis dianhydride of (3) is accomplished by the conversion of (2) to its corresponding cyclic dianhydride. The synthesis of the diamine is accomplished by the similar reaction of an aryltrifluoromethyl ketone with aniline or alkyl substituted or disubstituted anilines. Also, other derivatives of the above are formed by nucleophilic displacement reactions.

Interactions Between Oxygen and Nitrogen: O[Single Bond]N, O[Single Bond]N (sub 2), and O (sub 2)[Single Bond]N (sub 2)

Potential energy curves for 0-N interactions corresponding to the X (sup 2) II (sub t/2), X (sup 2) II (sub 3/2), A (sup 2) Eta (sup plus), B (sup 2) II, C (sup 2) II, D (sup 2) Eta (sup plus), E (sup 2) Eta (sup plus), and B prime (sup 2 delta) states of nitric oxide have been calculated from spectroscopic data by the Rydberg- Klein-Rees method. Curves for the (sup 4) II, (sup 2) Eta, (sup 4) Eta, (sup 6) Eta, and (sup 6) II states have been obtained from limited spectroscopic results and from relations derived from approximate quantum-mechanical calculations. Two semi-independent calculations have been made, and are in good agreement with each other. The quantum-mechanical relations also lead to approximate curves for the O[Single Bond]N, and O[Single Bond]N (sub 2) interactions over a limited range. The O (sub 2)[Single Bond]N (sub 2) interaction is consistent with one valid at larger separation distances which has been derived from high-temperature gas viscosity data.

A Metal‐Organic Framework with Nonpolar Pore Surfaces for the One‐Step Acquisition of C 2 H 4 from a C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 Mixture

Abstract Because C 2 H 4 plays an essential role in the chemical industry, economical and energy‐efficient separation of ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) from ethane (C 2 H 6 ) is extremely important. With the exception of energy‐intensive cryogenic distillation, there are few one‐step methods to obtain polymer‐grade (≥99.95 % pure) C 2 H 4 from C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 mixtures. Here we report a highly stable metal‐organic‐framework (MOF) FJI‐H11‐Me(des) (FJI‐H=Hong's group in Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter) which features one‐dimensional hexagonal nonpolar pore surfaces constructed by aromatic rings and alkyl groups. This FJI‐H11‐Me(des) adsorbs C 2 H 6 rather than C 2 H 4 between 273 and 303 K. Practical breakthrough experiments with C 2 H 4 containing 1 % C 2 H 6 have shown that FJI‐H11‐Me(des) can realize the acquisition in one‐step of polymer‐grade, 99.95 % pure C 2 H 4 under various conditions including different gas flow rates, temperatures and relative humidity.

The Crystal Structure of BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 Featuring Brownmillerite‐Type Layers

Abstract A bimetallic hydroxychalcogenide, BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 , was synthesized through hydrothermal pouch methods. The single crystal X‐ray diffraction and electron diffraction indicates that the phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma and is composed of anionic layers [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] − that are separated and charged balanced by Ba 2+ cations. The [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] – layer comprises two unique Zn sites, which form interpenetrating zigzag chains with an in‐plane dipole moment and adopts a brownmillerite‐type structural motif. The adjacent layers contain tetrahedrally coordinated Zn chains of opposite handedness related by an inversion center, which cancel the microscopic dipoles to minimize the macroscopic electric polarization. The adoption of a brownmillerite structural motif in BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 can be rationalized by the distinct charge difference between Se 2− and OH − anions, which creates a sufficient dipole moment in the ZnSe 3 (OH) tetrahedra to allow the occurrence of twisted chains. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the existence of OH − anions and DFT calculations indicate that BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap. This work expands the chemistry of the brownmillerite family from traditional homoanionic oxides to multianion hydroxychalcogenides, offering a new opportunity to explore tunable structural complexity for better design of functional materials.

Local Environment of Superoxide Radical Formed on the TiO 2 Surface Produced From Ti(OiPr) 4 Exposed to H 2 O 2

A selective heterogeneous catalyst with the superoxide anion O 2 •– stable at room temperature, generated by treating Ti(OR) 4 (R=iPr, nBu) with H 2 O 2 , was previously reported and used for the oxidation of organic compounds. Furthermore, it was proposed that exceptional stability of the O 2 •– is resulted from its stabilization near Ti +4 cation on the TiO 2 surface with participation of water molecules and/or OH groups. In this article, we performed high-resolution pulsed EPR study on the O 2 •– in this catalyst with the aim to obtain quantitative information about its interactions with the surrounding molecules. Our data has shown that the O 2 •– is involved in weak hyperfine interactions with protons in the nearest environment, which do not exceed a value of 2 MHz. It corresponds to an Os…H distance of ≥ 3 Å that exclude the formation of hydrogen bonds. The analysis of possible structures of O 2 •– adsorption on TiO 2 surface taking into account our results and lack of radical mobility at room temperature previously observed in EPR spectra led us to suggest that the O 2 •– is stabilized in the form of superoxo bridge coordinated with two titanium atoms.

Synthesis and structural characterization of the new Zintl phases Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 . Rare example of small gap semiconducting behavior with negative thermopower within the range 300 K-700 K

The new Zintl phases Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 have been synthesized using Pb flux, which allowed for the growth of 4-5 mm large crystals. The structures were determined utilizing single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Both compounds crystalize in the monoclinic crystal system (space group C2/m (No. 12)) and their structures are closely related. The structure of Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 can be seen as being comprised of divalent Ba atoms and conjoined CdP 4 tetrahedra in the form of [Cd 2 P 4 ] 6- layers. Within the layers, homoatomic P–P bonds are present, which if cleaved, leave two infinite [CdP 3 ] 7- chains running along the crystallographic b-axis. The other structure, that of Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 , can be rationalized as also having divalent Ba atoms and conjoined CdP4 tetrahedra in the form of [Cd 2 P 3 ] 6- layers. These layers, again, can be visualized as chains that run down the crystallographic b-axis, which are further connected by P-P dimers. Electronic band structure calculations show that each structure has an optimal number of valence electrons, and therefore conform to the Zintl-Klemm concept. Accordingly, the two compounds can be considered small band gap semiconductors, with band gaps of ca. 0.1 eV and 0.6 eV for Ba3Cd2P4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 , respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements show that Ba3Cd2P4 displays a large resistivity value at room temperature and an experimental band gap of ca. 0.05 eV, which fits reasonably well with the theoretical predictions. Thermopower measurements show that throughout the temperature range 300 K-700 K, Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 displays a negative Seebeck coefficient. Here, the extremum value of -84 μV is reached at 630 K, suggestive of an n-type semiconductor, a rarity among Zintl phases.

Structure and Dynamics of Aqueous Electrolytes Confined in 2D-TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T 2 MXene Heterostructures

The synthesis of heterostructures of different two-dimensional (2D) materials offers an approach to combine advantages of different materials constituting the heterostructure and ultimately enhance their performance for applications such as electrochemical energy storage, achieving high energy, and high-power densities. Understanding the behavior of ions and solvents in confinement between these dissimilar layers is critical to understand their performance and control. Considering aqueous electrolytes, we explore the heterostructure of 2D lepidocrocite-type TiO 2 (2D-TiO 2 ) and hydroxylated or O-terminated Ti 3 C 2 MXene using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations and elastic/quasielastic neutron scattering techniques. Simulating a bilayer water intercalation, we find that the extent of interlayer hydration is impacted most by the surface terminations on the MXene and is marginally affected by 2D-TiO 2 . However, the introduction of 2D-TiO 2 decreases the water self-diffusion due to the notch sites (i.e., surface oxygen ridges) entrapping water molecules. Intercalating alkali cations into the heterostructures, we find that Li + is predominantly adsorbed at the 2D-TiO 2 surface instead of the MXenes with the preferential occupation of the notch sites. In contrast, Na+ forms a planar solvation with water, while K + is adsorbed both at the O-terminated MXene and 2D-TiO 2 . This behavior is altered when OH-terminated MXene is involved—the repulsion from the protons on the MXene surface forces the K + ions to be adsorbed exclusively to 2D-TiO 2 , while Na + retains some of its solvation in the water layer due to its smaller size. In OH-terminated MXenes, we see a consistent transfer of protons from the MXene surface toward 2D-TiO 2 , implying a greater capacity to store protons in the heterostructures. Of the three cations simulated, Na + hinders the proton migration the least and Li + the most because of its position near the 2D-TiO 2 surface. Furthermore, 2D-TiO 2 /MXene heterostructures are likely to exhibit a higher energy density but lower power density, especially with Na + intercalation.

Elucidating the Role of Water on Limonene Oxidation with H 2 O 2 over γ -Al 2 O 3

Limonene oxide, which is produced from limonene epoxidation, is a valuable molecule that can be applied in flavor, fragrance, and renewable polymer applications. A catalytic reaction system using H 2 O 2 with γ-Al 2 O 3 and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) as the solvent has been explored as an effective system for this reaction. In these previous studies, a number of postulates have been proposed as to how water affects the reaction; therefore, the focus of this work is to elucidate the role of water in limonene epoxidation. While not impacting the selectivity to limonene oxide, the amount of water in the reaction system is shown to significantly impact the limonene reactivity. Furthermore, through both addition of excess water and removal of water with a Dean–Stark apparatus, the control of the H 2 O 2 /H 2 O ratio is demonstrated to be the primary factor controlling reactivity. In contrast, changes in limonene concentrations for a specific H 2 O 2 /H 2 O ratio are shown to have little impact on the reaction rate. This study shows that the competitive adsorption of H 2 O 2 and water on the catalyst surface is key in explaining the water impact on the reaction performance.

Side-On N 2 Binding and Reduction by a Heterotetrametallic Zr 2 Co 2 Cluster

In multimetallic compounds, N 2 typically bridges late transition metals in an end-on (η 1 :η 1 ) fashion while early transition metals often bind N 2 side-on (η 2 ), with the latter resulting in more significant N–N bond elongation. In this work, N 2 fixation is accomplished by using a well-defined scaffold featuring a heterobimetallic combination of Zr and Co. We report a heterotetrametallic Zr 2 Co 2 cluster in which N 2 is bound side-on to the two Co centers and end-on to Zr in a μ 3 -η 1 :η 2 :η 2 binding mode that defies established paradigms for N 2 binding. The heterometallic approach is shown to facilitate catalytic reductive silylation of N 2 with turnover numbers far exceeding those of reported cobalt catalysts.

Ultra-stable and poison tolerant oxygen evolution activity enabled by surface In 2 O 3- x (OH) y of Co 3 In 2 S 2 large single crystals

Water is an earth-abundant source for clean hydrogen production via electrochemical water electrolysis (WE). However, the surface poisoning that occurs in aqueous electrolytes drastically deactivates the electrocatalytic performance of electrodes. Here, in this study, we report electrochemically formed In 2 O 3-x (OH) y on the surface of a large (1–1.5 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide and 0.3–0.5 mm thick) single crystal of Weyl semimetal Co 3 In 2 S 2 (Co 3 In 2 S 2 /In 2 O 3-x (OH) y ) as an ultra-stable and poison tolerant electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH, addressing a bottleneck in WE. The OER activity of the powder form of Co 3 In 2 S 2 is limited by its aerophilic nature. Remarkably, the single-crystal electrodes maintained their high activity for a continuous operational period of 5 h in 1 M KOH electrolyte with/without 10 mM strong surface-poisoning ligands i.e., potassium cyanide, bipyridine, and ethylenediaminetetraacetate disodium salt. The electrodes exhibited stable OER activity for 1000 h at 100 mA cm -2 (1.73 V vs. RHE). The temperature-dependent OER polarization curves (10–70 °C) unambiguously revealed surface poisoning through the suppression of precatalytic Co-redox peaks on the bipyridine poisoned electrode, which led to the stabilization of surface Co-sites. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of pristine, poisoned and post-electrocatalytic single-crystal Co 3 In 2 S 2 electrodes revealed the existence of an In 2 O 3-x (OH) y surface phase, which could be the potential heterostructure for the origin of ultra-stable and poison tolerant OER activity.

Topotactic Phase Transformation of Lithiated Spinel to Layered LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2: The Interaction of 3-D and 2-D Li-ion Diffusion

This study investigates the structural evolution of LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2 cathode materials for Li-ion batteries as a function of synthesis temperature and its effect on electrochemical performance. It is demonstrated that, as the synthesis temperature increases from 400 to 900 ?C, a gradual topotactic transformation occurs between a lithiated spinel structure, denoted herein as “lithium-excess spinel” LxS-LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2 (or LxS-LMNO), and the well-known layered LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2 structure prepared at high temperature, HT-LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2 (HT-LMNO). The electrochemical capacity of the LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2 electrodes follows a parabolic trend with increasing synthesis temperature, which is attributed primarily to the gradual transformation of 3-dimensional (3-D) to 2-dimensional (2-D) diffusion pathways for the Li ions. When synthesized at 400 °C, LxS-LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2 electrodes perform well, benefitting from the 3-D network of channels within the LxS structure. By contrast, when prepared at 500-700 °C, LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2 electrodes operate poorly, which is attributed to the formation of locally disordered structural arrangements that impede Li-ion diffusion. Such an increase in local disorder in the mid-temperature synthesis range is attributed to the structural frustration between the lithium-excess spinal and layered end-members. The transformation from the locally disordered to more ordered layered components between 700 °C and 900 °C enhances electrochemical performance. The study opens new avenues for designing next-generation Mn-rich cathode materials by fine-tuning the synthesis conditions as well as the composition and structure of LxS-LMNO electrodes.

Robust low-temperature (350 °C) ferroelectric Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 fabricated using anhydrous H 2 O 2 as the ALD oxidant

Here, in this Letter, the robust ferroelectric properties of low-temperature (350 °C) Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 (HZO) films are investigated. We demonstrate that the lower crystallization temperature of HZO films originates from a densified film deposition with an anhydrous H 2 O 2 oxidant in the atomic layer deposition process. As a consequence of this densification, H 2 O 2 -based HZO films showed completely crystallinity with fewer defects at a lower annealing temperature of 350 °C. This reduction in the crystallization temperature additionally suppresses the oxidation of TiN electrodes, thereby improving device reliability. The low-temperature crystallization process produces an H 2 O 2 -based HZO capacitor with a high remanent polarization ( P r ), reduced leakage current, high breakdown voltage, and better endurance. Furthermore, while an O 3 -based HZO capacitor requires wake-up cycling to achieve stable P r , the H 2 O 2 -based HZO capacitor demonstrates a significantly reduced wake-up nature. Anhydrous H 2 O 2 oxidant enables the fabrication of a more reliable ferroelectric HZO device using a low process thermal budget (350 °C).

Metabolic engineering of β-oxidation to leverage thioesterases for production of 2-heptanone, 2-nonanone and 2-undecanone

Medium-chain length methyl ketones are potential blending fuels due to their cetane numbers and low melting temperatures. Biomanufacturing offers the potential to produce these molecules from renewable resources such as lignocellulosic biomass. Here, we designed and tested metabolic pathways in Escherichia coli to specifically produce 2-heptanone, 2-nonanone and 2-undecanone. We achieved substantial production of each ketone by introducing chain-length specific acyl-ACP thioesterases, blocking the β-oxidation cycle at an advantageous reaction, and introducing active β-ketoacyl-CoA thioesterases. Using a bioprospecting approach, we identified fifteen homologs of E. coli β-ketoacyl-CoA thioesterase (FadM) and evaluated the in vivo activity of each against various chain length substrates. The FadM variant from Providencia sneebia produced the most 2-heptanone, 2-nonanone, and 2-undecanone, suggesting it has the highest activity on the corresponding β-ketoacyl-CoA substrates. We further tested enzyme variants, including acyl-CoA oxidases, thiolases, and bi-functional 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydratases to maximize conversion of fatty acids to β-keto acyl-CoAs for 2-heptanone, 2-nonanone, and 2-undecanone production. In order to address the issue of product loss during fermentation, we applied a 20% (v/v) dodecane layer in the bioreactor and built an external water cooling condenser connecting to the bioreactor heat-transferring condenser coupling to the condenser. Finally, using these modifications, we were able to generate up to 4.4 g/L total medium-chain length methyl ketones.
