Equation of state at neutron-star densities and beyond from perturbative QCD

We explore the consequences of imposing robust thermodynamic constraints arising from perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) when inferring the dense-matter equation-of-state (EOS). We find that the termination density, up to which the EOS modeling is performed in an inference setup, strongly affects the constraining power of the QCD input. This sensitivity in the constraining power arises from EOSs that have a specific form, with drastic softening immediately above the termination density followed by a strong stiffening. Here we also perform explicit modeling of the EOS down from perturbative-QCD densities to construct a new QCD likelihood function that incorporates additional perturbative-QCD calculations of the sound speed and is insensitive to the termination density, which we make publicly available.

Dust stars in the minimal exponential measure model

Here, we report the existence of horizonless compact object solutions supported by dust in the minimal exponential measure (MEMe) model, a theory which modifies the couplings between gravity and matter without introducing dynamical degrees of freedom. For a perfect fluid source, the field equations for the MEMe model can be rewritten as the Einstein field equations sourced by a perfect fluid with a transformed equation of state, which can endow a sufficiently dense cloud of dust with an effective pressure. The resulting dust-supported horizonless compact objects can have masses below ∼10 −11 ⁢𝑀 ⊙ , making them suitable as massive compact halo objects comprising a significant mass fraction for dark matter. A necessary condition for the existence of these compact object solutions is that the single free parameter in the MEMe model is positive valued. Additionally, we find that this positive sign for the parameter can provide a mechanism for suppressing the formation of (primordial) black holes from the gravitational collapse of matter below a certain mass scale.

Re-Assembly and Test of a COMB Dipole Magnet With STAR Wires

Rare-Earth Barium Copper Oxide (REBCO) coated conductors are an attractive option for application in high field accelerator magnets due to their high critical field and the convenience of fabrication without heat treatment compared to some other superconductors. A small REBCO accelerator magnet was previously fabricated and tested in liquid nitrogen, demonstrating over 90% critical current retention in the coils. This paper describes the magnet re-assembly with a different support structure and its test in liquid helium at 1.8–4.5 K. The magnet quench history along with the instrumentation data is presented and discussed.

From reactors to stars

This Eur. Phys. J. A volume 58 is dedicated to the life and work of Dr. Franz Käppeler from Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) who died on 20 November 2021, after a short illness. He was one of the leading experimentalists in the field of experimental nuclear astrophysics in Germany and worldwide for decades. Many of the authors of this volume knew Franz personally and many others were directly or indirectly inspired by his work and personality. All references in this introductory article refer to publications in this volume, not necessary to actual work by Dr. Käppeler.

Fabrication and test of COMB dipole magnet with STAR® wires

Fermilab is working on superconducting accelerator magnet R&D under the framework of the U.S. MagnetDevelopment Program (USMDP). An integral part of that program is High Temperature Superconducting (HTS)accelerator magnet development to- demonstrate HTS self‐fields of 5 T or greater- be compatible with operation in hybrid LTS/HTS configuration• to probe fields beyond 16 T for future High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments
