Jupiter's radiation belts and the sweeping effect of its satellites

Jupiter's electron and proton radiation belts were analyzed, with particular reference to the effect of its five inner satellites, located within its magnetosphere. The characteristics of trapped electrons and protons with a magnetic moment of 50 MeV/gauss, considered typical at Jupiter, were calculated. The mean absorption time before impact was calculated for particles located at the radial distance of each of the satellites. A characteristic diffusion time near each satellite was calculated, assuming violation of the third invariant due to magnetic fluctuations associated with fluctuations in the solar wind. This diffusion time was found to be long compared with the absorption lifetimes at Europa and Amalthea.

Low-speed wind-tunnel investigation of the longitudinal characteristics of a large-scale variable wing-sweep fighter model in the high-lift configuration

The low-speed characteristics of a large-scale model of the U. S. Navy/Grumman F-14A aircraft were studied in tests conducted in the Ames Research Center 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel. The primary purpose of the program was the determination of lift and stability levels and landing approach attitude of the aircraft in its high-lift configuration. Tests were conducted at wing angles of attack between minus 2 deg and 30 deg with zero yaw. Data were taken at Reynolds numbers ranging from 3.48 million to 9.64 million based on a wing mean aerodynamic chord of 7.36 ft. The model configuration was changed as required to show the effects of glove slat, wing slat leading-edge radius, cold flow ducting, flap deflection, direct lift control (spoilers), horizontal tail, speed brake, landing gear and missiles.

Low-speed wind tunnel investigation of the lateral-directional characterisitcs of a large-scale variable wing-sweep fighter model in the high-lift configuration

The low-speed characteristics of a large-scale model of the F-14A aircraft were studied in tests conducted in the Ames Research Center 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel. The primary purpose of the present tests was the determination of lateral-directional stability levels and control effectiveness of the aircraft in its high-lift configuration. Tests were conducted at wing angles of attack between minus 2 deg and 30 deg and with sideslip angles between minus 12 deg and 12 deg. Data were taken at a Reynolds number of 8.0 million based on a wing mean aerodynamic chord of 2.24 m (7.36 ft). The model configuration was changed as required to show the effects of direct lift control (spoilers) at yaw, yaw angle with speed brake deflected, and various amounts and combinations of roll control.

Feasibility study of a swept frequency electromagnetic probe (SWEEP) using inductive coupling for the determination of subsurface conductivity of the earth and water prospecting in arid regions

Techniques developed for electromagnetic probing of the lunar interior, and techniques developed for the generation of high power audio frequencies were combined to make practical a magnetic inductive coupling system for the rapid measurement of ground conductivity profiles which are helpful when prospecting for the presence and quality of subsurface water. A system which involves the measurement of the direction, intensity, and time phase of the magnetic field observed near the surface of the earth at a distance from a horizontal coil energized so as to create a field that penetrates the earth was designed and studied to deduce the conductivity and stratification of the subsurface. Theoretical studies and a rudimentary experiment in an arid region showed that the approach is conceptually valid and that this geophysical prospecting technique can be developed for the economical exploration of subterranean water resources.

Vector sweep

Program is numerical procedure for calculating radiation/geometrical configuration factors and/or space-environmental heat-flux histories. System can accomodate complex systems of diverse geometric shapes residing in unlimited variety of mutual shadow conditions. Basic analytical device is finite-difference employment of unit-sphere method of calculating configuration factors.

Subsonic and supersonic aerodynamic characteristics of a supersonic cruise fighter model with a twisted and cambered wing with 74 deg sweep

A wind tunnel investigation has been conducted to determine the longitudinal and lateral aerodynamic characteristics of a model of a supersonic cruise fighter configuration with a design Mach number of 2.60. The configuration is characterized by a highly swept arrow wing twisted and cambered to minimize supersonic drag due to lift, twin wing mounted vertical tails, and an aft mounted integral underslung duel-engine pod. The investigation also included tests of the configuration with larger outboard vertical tails and with small nose strakes.

The effect of blade sweep on propeller performance

The advanced propeller developed for high Mach number cruise incorporates swept blades to reduce compressibility losses. In order to evaluate the induced flow-field vortex lattice methods are applied to a swept propeller blade. The blade is modeled by a radial distribution of helical horseshoe vortices with a single swept bound vortex at the quarter chord and the control point at the three-quarter chord of each radial section. The results of numerical calculations show that the power coefficient decreases as the blade is swept and the power loading distribution shifts inboard.
