Sierra/SolidMechanics 5.2 Example Problems Manual

Presented in this document are tests that exist in the Sierra/SolidMechanics example problem suite, which is a subset of the Sierra/SM regression and performance test suite. These examples showcase common and advanced code capabilities. A wide variety of other regression and verification tests exist in the Sierra/SM test suite that are not included in this manual.

The Rodinia Benchmarks in SYCL

The Rodinia Benchmark Suite in SYCL was first published as a technical report at Argonne National Laboratory in June 2020. While porting more programs to SYCL, the Rodinia benchmark suites were merged into the heterogenous computing benchmarks (HeCBench). Since then, the source codes and scripts of the benchmark suite have been updated to fix compile- and run-time issues that users encountered. With the recent SYCL compilers from Codeplay and Intel, this report presents the experimental results of evaluating these benchmarks on the Intel CPU and GPU devices.

Sierra/SolidMechanics 5.4 Verification Tests Manual

Presented in this document is a small portion of the tests that exist in the Sierra/SolidMechanics (Sierra/SM) verification test suite. Most of these tests are run nightly with the Sierra/SM code suite, and the results of the test are checked versus the correct analytical result. For each of the tests presented in this document, the test setup, a description of the analytic solution, and comparison of the Sierra/SM code results to the analytic solution is provided. Mesh convergence is also checked on a nightly basis for several of these tests. This document can be used to confirm that a given code capability is verified or referenced as a compilation of example problems. Additional example problems are provided in the Sierra/SM Example Problems Manual. Note, many other verification tests exist in the Sierra/SM test suite, but have not yet been included in this manual.

Nuclear Data Adjustment with Whisper for Criticality Safety Applications [Slides]

Nuclear data adjustment is used by Whisper to compute residual nuclear data uncertainties within a full suite of benchmarks; in order to do so, a complete set of nuclear data covariances, benchmarks and k-effective sensitivity profiles (for both benchmarks and applications) is required. For applications that are similar to the full benchmark suite, the residual uncertainties add a small margin to the overall USL calculation. For applications that are dissimilar to the full benchmark suite, the residual uncertainties add a reasonable margin to the overall USL calculation (more conservative). This methodology helps to overcome any issues in the released covariance libraries where nuclear data uncertainties appear to be too large.

Plans for Expanded Data Testing at ORNL [Slides]

VALID expansion is on-going and should provide coverage over a wider range of systems in the future. Adding additional application types beyond critical experiments can also be used in expanded data testing. Two other test suites have been developed at ORNL for other purposes, but never waste a good test suite. These suites are more likely to be relevant to testing differences in data as compared to assessing accuracy of evaluations.

MCNP ® Code Version 6.3.0 Verification & Validation Testing

This report describes the verification and validation testing performed on MCNP ® code version 6.3.0. The purpose of this report is to act as a compendium of test suite descriptions and results. Accordingly the document is divided into two parts. Part I (this part) describes each test suite in the following sections. Part II provides the results of testing each suite and comparisons to experimental and/or alternative computational results, as appropriate.

Canonical Vegetation Simulations

LANL employed the FIRETEC model to produce a suite of simulations of flow around trees and forests. The purpose of this suite of simulations is to provide detailed simulations of the effects of various types of trees and groups of trees including the mean velocity and turbulence fields. This suite includes various tree densities ranging from individual trees, wind breaks (i.e., lateral rows of trees), orchards, and forests of various densities. In addition to the simulations that we have already run, we have developed tools to facilitate more simulations in the future.

Verification and Performance Impact of the New Parallel MCNP6.3 Particle Track Output Capability for Subcritical Multiplication Simulations [Slides]

A separate MCNP6.3 V&V document reports on all the default calculations for all test suites. This report does not include the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite. After some additional clean-up and finalizing the post-processing and documentation steps, the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite will be released in the next version of our vnvstats repository. We tested the new HDF5 PTRAC feature in MCNP6.3 and found encouraging outcomes. Identical results coming out of the simulation with respect to the legacy PTRAC results. The overall runtime for all simulations is reduced by ~20% with the new HDF5 PTRAC capability. We consider giving the new HDF5 PTRAC features a try and using it for all subcritical multiplication and any other relevant (PTRAC) calculations.
