SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria Thermal Theory Manual - Version 4.58

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process flows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number (R e < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newtons method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic-adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Arias more advanced capabilities.

SCEPTRE 2.2 Quick Start Guide

This report provides a summary of notes for building and running the Sandia Computational Engine for Particle Transport for Radiation Effects (SCEPTRE) code. SCEPTRE is a general- purpose C++ code for solving the li near Boltzmann transport equation in serial or parallel using unstructured spatial finite elements, multigroup energy treatment, and a variety of angular treatments including discrete ordinates and spherical harmonics. Either the first-order form of the Boltzmann equation or one of the second-order forms may be solved. SCEPTRE requires a small number of open-source Third Part y Libraries (TPL) to be available, and example scripts for building these TPLs are provided. The TPLs needed by SCEPTRE are Trilinos, boost, and netcdf. SCEPTRE uses an autotools build system , and a sample configure script is provided. Running the SCEPTRE code requires that the user provide a spatial finite-elements mesh in Exodus format and a cross section library in a format that will be described. SCEPTRE uses an xml-based input, and several examples will be provided.

Transport in Stochastic Media with Random Chord Length Distributions

Thermal radiation transport computations in binary Markovian random mixtures rely almost exclusively on the Levermore-Pomraning (LP) model which is obtained by applying a heuristic closure to the ensemble averaged random medium transport equation. The validity of this model has been extensively tested by comparing numerical results over a broad parameter range (material types and mixing parameters) against benchmark solutions in planar geometry. The conditions under which the LP-model provides useful results and when it breaks down are now well established, but work to date has been largely restricted to homogeneous mixing statistics, i.e., the mean chord lengths of both materials are taken to be spatially constant. In recent work, this limitation was relaxed by allowing the mean chord lengths and, in a consistent fashion, the volume fractions in the LP-model to vary spatially and in a follow-up investigation benchmark solutions were obtained by ensemble averaging results over material realizations sampled from a nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). Numerical experiments in rod geometry with specifically linear and quadratic spatial dependence of chord lengths showed that the material averaged radiation intensities vary nonmonotonically with depth into the medium, in stark contrast to solutions obtained assuming uniform chord lengths. Moreover, depending on the local optical thickness and strength of scattering, the LP-model results showed locally more nuanced deviations from the benchmark solutions than was the case with constant chord lengths. These limited numerical investigations highlight the nontrivial qualitative and quantitative consequences of nonhomogeneous mixing statistics, in particular that closure approximations may not be uniformly valid or invalid over the problem domain.

Physics of the Serrano Sn Transport Package

Serrano is a software package for simulating photon transport in moving material. It presently supports 1-D, unstructured 2-D for a wide variety of element types, and 3-D for tetrahedra and hexahedra. The package is designed to be a component of larger codes, such as radiation hydrodynamics codes. Only the radiation transport equations are solved by Serrano itself.

Eigenmode Analysis of Pulsed Neutron Transport Simulations

We discuss the time dependent behavior of some simple pulsed neutron simulations of subcritical problems in slab geometry. Our intent is to investigate the eigenvalue structure of the discretized neutron transport equation and to show under some reasonable assumptions that a dominant time eigenvalue exists that has a nonnegative eigenvector that determines the long time dependent behavior of the solution.
