A Unifying Framework to Enable Artificial Intelligence in High-Performance Computing Workflows

Current trends point to a future where large-scale scientific applications are tightly coupled high-performance computing/artificial intelligence (HPC/AI) hybrids. Hence, we urgently need to invest in creating a seamless, scalable framework where HPC and AI/machine learning can efficiently work together and adapt to novel hardware and vendor libraries without starting from scratch every few years. Finally, the current ecosystem and sparsely connected community are not sufficient to tackle these challenges, and we require a breakthrough catalyst for science similar to what PyTorch enabled for AI.

Random Walks With Tweedie: A Unified View of Score-Based Diffusion Models [In the Spotlight]

We present a concise derivation for several influential score-based diffusion models that relies on only a few textbook results. Diffusion models have recently emerged as powerful tools for generating realistic, synthetic signals—particularly natural images—and often play a role in state-of-the-art algorithms for inverse problems in image processing. While these algorithms are often surprisingly simple, the theory behind them is not, and multiple complex theoretical justifications exist in the literature. Here, in this study, we provide a simple and largely self-contained theoretical justification for score-based diffusion models that is targeted towards the signal processing community. This approach leads to generic algorithmic templates for training and generating samples with diffusion models. We show that several influential diffusion models correspond to particular choices within these templates and demonstrate that alternative, more straightforward algorithmic choices can provide comparable results. This approach has the added benefit of enabling conditional sampling without any likelihood approximation.

Trigger-based Incremental Data Processing with Unified Sync and Async Model

In recent years, more and more applications in the cloud have needs to process large-scale on-line datasets, which evolve over time as new entries are added and existing entries are modified. Several programming frameworks, such as Percolator and Oolong, are proposed for such incremental data processing and can achieve efficient processing with an event-driven abstraction. However, these frameworks are inherently asynchronous, leaving the heavy burden of managing synchronization to applications' developers, which further significantly restricts their usabilities. In this study, we propose a trigger-based incremental computing framework in the cloud, called Domino, with both synchronous and asynchronous mechanisms to coordinate parallel triggers. With this new framework, both synchronous and asynchronous applications can be seamlessly developed. Use cases and extensive evaluation results confirm that it can deliver sufficient performance, and also is easy to use for incremental applications in large-scale distributed computing.

Eddy Current Loss Model Unifying the Effects of Reaction Field and Non-Homogeneous 3-D Magnetic Field

In this article, a new analytical method is proposed to estimate eddy currents inside linear conductive materials. The novel closed-form formulation takes into account the effects of both conductor reaction field that dominates at high frequencies as well as the spatially non-homogeneous nature of the magnetic field penetrating the material. Although the model is suitable for most kinds of permanent magnet machines, it is particularly useful for Surface-mounted Permanent Magnet (SPM) machines where both of these phenomena are prominent. The numerical implementation of the proposed model, which consists of a combination of the method of images and 4-D Fourier transform, is presented. The model is then validated against 2-D and 3-D finite element models (FEMs) for a simple magnetic circuit, showing good agreement. Finally, the eddy current magnet loss in an SPM synchronous machine is evaluated and results are discussed.

Unified epigenomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic taxonomy of Alzheimer’s disease progression and heterogeneity

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a heterogeneous disorder with abnormalities in multiple biological domains. In an advanced machine learning analysis of postmortem brain and in vivo blood multi-omics molecular data ( N = 1863), we integrated epigenomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic profiles into a multilevel biological AD taxonomy. We obtained a personalized multilevel molecular index of AD dementia progression that predicts severity of neuropathologies, and identified three robust molecular-based subtypes that explain much of the pathologic and clinical heterogeneity of AD. These subtypes present distinct patterns of alteration in DNA methylation, RNA, proteins, and metabolites, identifiable in the brain and subsequently in blood. In addition, the genetic variations that predispose to the various AD subtypes in brain predict distinct spatial patterns of alteration in cell types, suggesting a unique influence of each putative AD variant on neuropathological mechanisms. These observations support that an individually tailored multi-omics molecular taxonomy of AD may represent distinct targets for preventive or treatment interventions.

A two-phase model that unifies and extends the classical models of membrane transport

Two models describe solvent transport through swollen, nonporous membranes. The pore-flow model, based on fluid mechanics, works for porous membranes, whereas the solution-diffusion model invokes molecular diffusion to treat nonporous membranes. Both approaches make valid arguments for swollen polymer membranes, but they disagree in their predictions of intramembrane pressure and concentration profiles. Using a fluid-solid model that treats the solvent and membrane matrix as separate phases, we show both classical models to be valid, to represent complementary approaches to the same phenomenon, and to make identical predictions. The fluid-solid model clarifies recent reverse osmosis measurements; provides a predictive and mechanistic basis for empirical high-pressure limiting flux phenomena, in quantitative agreement with classic measurements; and gives a framework to treat nonporous but mechanically heterogeneous membrane materials.

Unified description of the coupled-channels and statistical Hauser-Feshbach nuclear reaction theories for low energy neutron incident reactions

We incorporate the coupled-channels optical model into the statistical Hauser-Feshbach nuclear reaction theory, where the scattering matrix is diagonalized by performing the Engelbrecht-Weidenmüller transformation. This technique has been implemented in the coupled-channels optical model code ECIS by J. Raynal, and we extend this method so that all the open channels in a nucleon-induced reaction on a deformed nucleus can be calculated consistently.
