Tracking antenna arrays for near-millimeter waves

A two-dimensional monolithic array has been developed that gives the elevation and azimuth of point source targets. The array is an arrangement of rows and columns of antennas and bismuth bolometer detectors on a fused quartz substrate. Energy is focused onto the array through a lens placed on the back side of the substrate. At 1.38 mm with a 50 mm diameter objective lens, the array has demonstrated a positioning accuracy of 26 arcmin. In a differential mode this precision improves to 9 arcsec, limited by the mechanics of the rotating stage. This tracking could be automated to a fast two-step procedure where a source is first located to the nearest row and column, and then precisely located by scanning. With signal processing the array should be able to track multiple sources.

Definition Study for Space Shuttle Experiments Involving Large, Steerable Millimeter-Wave Antenna Arrays

The potential uses and techniques for the shuttle spacelab Millimeter Wave Large Aperture Antenna Experiment (MWLAE) are documented. Potential uses are identified: applications to radio astronomy, the sensing of atmospheric turbulence by its effect on water vapor line emissions, and the monitoring of oil spills by multifrequency radiometry. IF combining is preferable to RF combining with respect to signal to noise ratio for communications receiving antennas of the size proposed for MWLAE. A design approach using arrays of subapertures is proposed to reduce the number of phase shifters and mixers for uses which require a filled aperture. Correlation radiometry and a scheme utilizing synchronous Dicke switches and IF combining are proposed as potential solutions.

MSAT mobile electronically steered phased array antenna development

The Mobile Satellite Experiment (MSAT-X) breadboard antenna design demonstrates the feasibility of using a phased array in a mobile satellite application. An electronically steerable phased array capable of tracking geosynchronous satellites from anywhere in the Continental United States has been developed. The design is reviewed along with the test data. Cost analysis are presented which indicate that this design can be produced at a cost of $1620 per antenna.

Sidelobe Reduction and Mode-Purity Enhancement of Vortex Beams from a Programmable, Rectangular Phased Array Antenna

Tapering the magnitude of the electric field excitation of a programmable, rectangular phased array has been employed to achieve sidelobe reduction and enhancement of mode purity in vortex beams, which carry non-zero orbital angular momentum. Far-field radiation patterns pertaining to a commercial-off-the-shelf, 256-element antenna were generated via electromagnetic simulation. The patterns were decomposed into weighted sums of Laguerre-Gaussian modes. The extracted coupling coefficients were used to gauge mode purity. In comparison to a uniform excitation of the phased array elements, our studies indicate that employing a tapering technique can result in a 10.7 dB reduction of sidelobe power and a 7.22 dB improvement in worst-case, mode-to-mode cross-talk.

Control of small phased-array antennas

Series of reports, patent descriptions, calculator programs, and other literature describes antenna control and steering apparatus for seven-element phased array. Though series contains information specific to particular system, it illustrates methods that can be applied to antennas with greater or fewer numbers of elements. Included are programs for calculating beam parameters and design functions and information to interfacing digital controller to beam-steering apparatus.

Multibeam Phased Array Antennas

In this study, a new architecture for Ka-band multi-beam arrays was developed and demonstrated experimentally. The goal of the investigation was to demonstrate a new architecture that has the potential of reducing the cost as compared to standard expensive phased array technology. The goals of this specific part of the project, as stated in the yearly statement of work in the original proposal are: 1. Investigate bounds on performance of multi-beam lens arrays in terms of beamwidths, volume (size), isolation between beams, number of simultaneous beams, etc. 2. Design a small-scale array to demonstrate the principle. The array will be designed for operation around 3OGHz (Ka-band), with two 10-degree beamwidth beams. 3. Investigate most appropriate way to accomplish fine-tuning of the beam pointing within 5 degrees around the main beam pointing angle.

Performance evaluation of antenna arrays with noisy carrier reference

The performance evaluation of coherent receivers with noisy carrier references and multiple antennas is presented. The received signal is assumed to be residual carrier BPSK, with a PLL used for extracting the carrier. Explicit relationships between the error probabilities and the various system parameters are given. Specific results are given for the performance gain of combined carrier referencing over baseband only combining when the channel alignment process is ideal. A simple asymptotic expression for the performance gain is determined when the number of antennas used is increased without bound. Examples using Deep Space Network receivers illustrate the performance of each arraying structure.

System and method for controlling the phase of an antenna array

A system and method for controlling power transferred to an aircraft. The system includes a master antenna and a plurality of slave antennas on the ground. Each slave antenna transmits an uplink signal of a unique phase modulated frequency. The master antenna transmits a master uplink signal. The aircraft receives all the uplink signals and modulates a composite of those signals to produce a downlink beacon that has multiple phase components, each of which corresponds to one of the slave antennas and has a unique frequency. Each of the slave antennas receives the downlink beacon and uses the corresponding phase component to adjust the phase of the slave uplink signal relative to the master uplink signal.

An efficient technique for the performance evaluation of antenna arrays with noisy carrier reference

An efficient computational technique is developed to evaluate the performance of coherent receivers with noisy carrier reference and multiple antennas. The received signal is assumed to be uncoded residual carrier BPSK (binary phase shift keying), with a PLL (phase locked loop) used for extracting the carrier. An example using a Block 3 Deep Space Network PLL illustrates the performance of each arraying structure. The technique used is applicable to the performance evaluation for other receivers having similar decision statistics.

DSN Antenna Array Architectures Based on Future NASA Mission Needs

A flexible method of parametric, full life-cycle cost analysis has been combined with data on NASA's future communication needs to estimate the required number and operational dates of new antennas for the Deep Space Network (DSN). The requirements were derived from a subset of missions in the Integrated Mission Set database of NASA's Space Communications Architecture Working Group. Assuming that no new antennas are 'constructed', the simulation shows that the DSN is unlikely to meet more than 20% of mission requirements by 2030. Minimum full life-cycle costs result when antennas in the diameter range, 18m-34m, are constructed. Architectures using a mixture of antenna diameters produce a slightly lower full life-cycle cost.
