Chlorine isotope separations using thermal diffusion

In a chloride molten salt fast reactor (Cl-MSFR), the fuel salt might be comprised of a specific eutectic composition of alkali and alkaline chlorides that solubilize major and minor actinide chlorides as the fertile component(s). Each of the chloride species contain the natural abundance ( 35 Cl ~76% and 37 Cl ~24%) of the two stable isotopes of chlorine 35 Cl and 37 Cl. There has been an ongoing controversy for the operation of the Cl-MSFRs concerning the potential of the 35 Cl(n,γ) 36 Cl, 35 Cl(n,p) 35 S, 35 Cl(n,α) 32 S reactions to produce 36 Cl, 32 S, and 32 P at relevant energies [Bulmer 1956]. The undesirable attributes of irradiated 35 Cl are enumerated further below.

A Novel Dynamic Polymer Synthesis via Chlorinated Solvent Quenched Depolymerization

Dynamic polymers with both physical interactions and dynamic covalent bonds exhibit superior performance while achieving such dry polymers in an efficient manner remains a challenge. Herein, we report a novel organic solvent quenched polymer synthesis using a natural molecule, i.e., thioctic acid (TA), which has both dynamic disulfide bond and carboxylic acid. The effects of the solvent types and concentrations along with reaction times on the proposed reaction have been thoroughly explored for polymer synthesis. Solid-state proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) and first-principles simulations are carried out to investigate the reaction mechanism. It shows that the chlorinated solvent can efficiently stabilize and mediate the depolymerization of poly(TA) which is more kinetically favorable upon lowering the temperature. Attributed to the numerous dynamic covalent disulfide bonds and noncovalent hydrogen bonding, the obtained poly(TA) shows high extensibility, self-healable and re-processable properties. It can also be employed as an efficient adhesive even on a Teflon surface and 3D printed using the fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique. This new polymer synthesis approach on using organic solvents as catalysts along with the unique reaction mechanism provides a new pathway for efficient polymer synthesis, especially for those multi-functional dynamic polymers.

Structural Assessment of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, and Hydroxide Substitutions in Lead Arsenate Apatites (Mimetites)–Pb 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 X

Five lead-arsenate apatites (mimetites)-Pb 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 X—where X denotes fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and hydroxide (OH)—were synthesized via precipitation from aqueous solutions. The crystal structures were determined through Rietveld refinement of powder synchrotron X-ray data. All the compounds crystallized in the hexagonal class symmetry (space group P6 3 /m). The Rietveld refinement indicated that mimetite-Cl, -Br, -I, and -OH had an anion deficiency at position X. Substitution of halogens in a mimetite structure brought about systematic changes in unit-cell parameters, interatomic distances, and metaprism twist angles φ, proportional to the substituted halogen’s ionic radius. Mimetite-OH did not follow the linear correlations determined within the series. Twist angle φ, a useful device for monitoring changes in apatite topology, ranged from 20.34° for mimetite-F to 11.42° for mimetite-I. The geometric method has been proposed for determining the diameter of hexagonal channels hosting halogens in apatites. A comparison of the results with halogenated pyromorphites showed similar systematic trends: the substitutions in mimetites have comparable effect on the interatomic distances as in their phosphorous analogues.

Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins Measurements, SGP GIF, May 2023

This dataset contains measurements of medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) at 5-minute time resolution. The 6 most abundant ones are reported as well as the sum of all MCCPs measured. MCCPs were measured using a nitrate chemical ionization mass spectrometer at the ARM Southern Great Plains Guest Instrumentation Facility. Reported concentrations represent lower limit concentrations.

Process produces chlorinated aromatic isocyanate in high yield

Tetrachloreterephthaloyl chloride reacts with sodium azide in an atmosphere of nitrogen to form a high yield of tetrachloro-p-phenylene diisocyanate. The chlorinated diisocyanate should have application as an intermediate in the preparation of polyurethane foams. The high halogen content would impart added flame resistance to these foams.

Effect of chlorine purification on oxidation resistance of some mechanical carbons

Oxidation experiments were conducted with some experimental and commercial mechanical carbons at 650 C in dry air flowing at 28 cc/sec (STP). In general, purification of these carbon-graphites with chlorine at 2800 C improved oxidation resistance. Additional improvements in oxidation resistance were obtained from purification followed by an antioxidant (zinc phosphate) treatment. For the commercial materials, purification alone gave greater oxidation resistance than the antioxidant treatment alone. The reverse, however, was the case for the experimental materials.

Chlorine-bearing molecules in interstellar clouds

The reaction Cl(+) + H2 yielding HCl(+) + H is rapid, and it leads to the formation of the molecules HCl(+), H2Cl(+), and HCl. It may be possible to detect HCl(+) near 3600 A, and HCl may be observable at 1291 A. Also, photodissociation of HCl(+) may be a significant source of protons within clouds, and chemical heating resulting from the destruction of chlorine-bearing molecules may account for perhaps 1-10 per cent of the expected cooling from diffuse interstellar clouds.-

Effect of adsorbed chlorine and oxygen on shear strength of iron and copper junctions

Static friction experiments were performed in ultrahigh vacuum at room temperature on copper, iron, and steel contacts selectively contaminated with oxygen and chlorine in submonolayer amounts. The concentration of the adsorbates was determined with Auger electron spectroscopy and was measured relative to the saturation concentration of oxygen on iron (concentration 1.0). The coefficient of static friction decreased with increasing adsorbate concentration. It was independent of the metal and the adsorbate. The results compared satisfactorily with an extension of the junction growth theory to heterogeneous interfaces. The reduction in interfacial shear strength was measured by the ratio sub a/sub m where sub a is the shear strength of the interface with an adsorbate concentration of 1.0, and sub m is the strength of the clean metal interface. This ratio was 0.835 + or - 0.012 for all the systems tested.
