Cycling lithiated metal oxides to high potential (>4.5 V vs Li) is of significant interest for the next generation of lithium ion batteries as this significantly increases the capacity and energy of cells. However, cells cycled to high potential suffer from rapid capacity fade due to a combination of thickening of the anode solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and impedance growth on the cathode. While transition metal catalysed degradation of the anode SEI has been widely proposed as a primary source of capacity loss, a related acid induced degradation of the anode SEI is proposed. A systematic investigation of LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 , and LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathodes cycled to 4.2 and 4.6 V has been conducted and the oxidative generation of the strong acid difluorophosphoric acid (F 2 PO 2 H) has been quantified by solution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Ex-situ surface analysis of the electrodes with X-ray Photo Electron spectroscopy (XPS) suggests that the generation of F 2 PO 2 H correlates with a thickening of the anode SEI and an increase in the fluorophosphate content of the SEI. Changes to the LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 surface for cells cycled to 4.6 V are also consistent with the generation of acidic species. There is good correlation between the concentration F 2 PO 2 H, anode SEI degradation and the capacity loss of the cells.

A survey of 23 commercially available cation exchange membranes was performed for the downselection of membranes for use in a polysulfide-permanganate redox flow battery (pS-Mn RFB). The survey measured the flux of permanganate ions across a 0.1 mol L −1 concentration gradient as well as the membrane resistance in a 0.5 mol L −1 sodium chloride solution. The membranes exhibited the characteristic flux/resistance trade-off observed in most classes of membranes. To connect the individual membrane testing to how the membranes will perform in a device, cell performance data in a pS-Mn RFB was collected for three membranes from the survey. The coulombic, voltaic, and energy efficiency at low cycle counts aligned with the predictions from the membrane flux and resistance survey results. The study also identified three membranes—Fumapem F-930-RFS, Fumapem FS-715-RFS, and Aquivion E98-09S—that outperformed most other membranes regarding their position on the flux-resistance trade-off curve, indicating them to be good candidates for further testing.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a disease in which insulin action is impaired, and an acute bout of strength exercise can improve insulin sensitivity. Current guidelines for strength exercise prescription suggest that 8 to 30 sets could be performed, although it is not known how variations in exercise volume impact insulin sensitivity. Additionally, this means an almost 4-fold difference in time commitment, which might directly impact an individual’s motivation and perceived capacity to exercise. This study will assess the acute effects of high- and low-volume strength exercise sessions on insulin sensitivity. After being thoroughly familiarized, 14 obese individuals of both sexes (>40 year old) will undergo 3 random experimental sessions, with a minimum 4-day washout period between them: a high-volume session (7 exercises, 3 sets per exercise, 21 total sets); a low-volume session (7 exercises, 1 set per exercise, 7 total sets); and a control session, where no exercise will be performed. Psychological assessments (feeling, enjoyment, and self-efficacy) will be performed after the sessions. All sessions will be held at night, and the next morning, an oral glucose tolerance test will be performed in a local laboratory, from which indexes of insulin sensitivity will be derived. We believe this study will aid in strength exercise prescription for individuals who claim not to have time to exercise or who perceive high-volume strength exercise intimidating to adhere to. This trial was prospectively registered.

With support from the US Department of Energy Office of Science, we have developed and utilized extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy and sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy as probes of charge, spin, and solvation structure and dynamics in molecules and at interfaces. This work is crucial to advancing fundamental understanding of the processes that control the efficiency and speed of energy conversion and information processing in molecules and at interfaces. Accordingly, it has important applications for developing next generation technologies for information storage and processing with increasing data storage density and processing rates as well as developing new methods for efficient energy conversion and storage.

It is shown how to embed a critical point in a smooth background equation of state so as to yield the critical exponents and critical amplitude ratios expected of a transition in the same universality class as the liquid–gas phase transition and the 3D Ising model. There are only two independent critical exponents; the relations α + 2β + $\gamma$ = 2 and β(δ - 1) = $\gamma$ arise automatically, as does a new relation between the two critical amplitudes. The resulting equation of state has parameters which may be inferred by hydrodynamic modeling of heavy-ion collisions in the Beam Energy Scan II at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.
