Middle and Late-Holocene coastal environments of far Southeastern Russia as inferred from palynological and diatom data

Existing discontinuous palynological records from coastal and river valley exposures, with varying quality of radiocarbon control, suggested that the regional Holocene climate in southern areas of the Russian Far East was characterized by as many as 10 fluctuations in temperature and/or precipitation. In this study, palynological data from Zerkalnoye Lake, located on the western coast of the Sea of Japan, indicate a gradual decline in temperature through the Middle and Late-Holocene with a Holocene thermal maximum between 8800 and 5500 cal yr BP. Three wetter than present intervals, marked by an increase in Pinus koraiensis, occurred c. 3600–3500 cal yr BP, 2340–2050 cal yr BP, and 1830–1800 cal yr BP. The Zerkalnoye record shows the dominance of Quercus-broadleaf forests during the Middle and Early Holocene, although Quercus shows a gradual decrease as climate cooled during this interval. Diatom analysis of the Zerkalnoye sediments documents that the site was a shallow bay or coastal lagoon until c. 3540 cal yr BP. After that time, a freshwater lake was established, which had variable marine influences probably caused by sea level changes following deglaciation. The diatom data indicate a cool water interval between 2900 and 2580 cal yr BP, also noted in other sites in the region. Changes in the basin’s depositional environment do not affect the palynological record, indicating such sites can provide reliable paleovegetational and paleoclimatic records. In conclusion, the discrepancies of the various regional paleoclimatic scenarios indicate the need for the further collection of continuous records from coastal to alpine zones in this region of northeastern Asia.

Techno-Economic Assessment for the Production of Hydrocarbon Fuels via Catalytic Upgrading of Furans

This technical report documents the techno-economic analysis (TEA) implications of a biochemical/catalytic pathway for the production of long-chain hydrocarbon fuels in support to the multi-lab Catalytic Upgrading of Biochemical Intermediates (CUBI) project within the Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium (ChemCatBio). Two distinct conceptual biorefineries centered around the process encompassing sugar dehydration to furans, aldol condensation between furans and a ketone (methyl ethyl ketone [MEK]), and a final step of hydrotreating to obtain hydrocarbons in the C 14 -C 16 range are considered: an integrated plant that simultaneously produces both furans (furfural and HMF) and ketone (MEK via 2,3-butanediol [BDO]) from sugars and a dedicated facility focused on producing furans from corn stover hydrolysate and procuring the ketone externally. In either plant, the main coproducts are adipic acid (derived from lignin) and sodium sulfate. The results from the assessment are quite comparable to those reported in previous design case focused on biological conversion of sugars to fermentation intermediates with subsequent catalytic upgrading of those intermediates to hydrocarbon fuels, thus presenting another viable alternative pathway to achieve similar fuel cost targets through purely catalytic upgrading of sugars. Since this study considers long-term performance targets for the full pathway dedicated to sugar upgrading to fuels, the critical remaining research points needed to achieve future cost goals are also discussed. Finally, this report presents a single-point sensitivity analysis around selected parameters to identify the major cost drivers of the biorefineries and provides a qualitative discussion on additional opportunities for cost reduction within the proposed concepts, namely through adding value to furans, to coproducts that may be obtained following BDO dehydration, and to lignin through alternative pathways.

Bituminous Coal and Natural Gas to Electricity: >90% Capture Cases Technical Note

This technical note provides cost and performance estimates for post combustion carbon capture (PCCC) systems designed for greater than 90 percent capture on conventional PC- and NG-fueled power plants. The cost and performance estimates provided here were developed using the National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL’s) well-documented methodology for conducting technoeconomic analysis of fossil energy conversion systems and leveraging published performance and cost projections for higher capture rate systems. Included in this technical note is a brief description of the method used to adjust select 90 percent capture cases from NETL’s Cost and Performance Baselines for Fossil Energy Systems Volume 1: Bituminous Coal and Natural Gas to Electricity, hereafter referred to as the Baseline Study. This technical note is intended to serve as an interim update to NETL’s Baseline Study cases by providing cost and performance estimates for high capture PCCC technology that can be deployed in the near-term at fossil-fueled electricity generating units.

Experimental Evaluation of Deformation and Fracture Mechanisms in Highly Irradiated Austenitic Steels

The present report documents recent experimental results of analysis using scanning electron microscopy/electron backscatter diffraction (SEM-EBSD) of plastic deformation mechanisms and strain localization phenomena in austenitic steels irradiated by neutrons. Experiments were performed with specimens irradiated to 125 dpa and, additionally, with specimens that experienced radiation-induced swelling up to 3%. Section 1 briefly analyzes the deformation localization in irradiated steels and its consequences on the material performance. The section describes the advantages and importance of the SEM-EBSD approach combined with in situ mechanical testing capability. Section 2 briefly introduces the experimental tools and methods (i.e., SEM/EBSD in situ tensile frame, electric discharge machine to manufacture irradiated specimens) and describes the investigated materials (i.e., element composition, irradiation conditions, and general microstructure). Section 3 describes the key experimental results and provides a brief analysis and comparison with the datasets obtained earlier within the same task (i.e., low-dose specimens). The discussion focuses on EBSD microstructure maps with strain localization features, misorientation evolution as a function of strain, and observed deformation mechanisms. Section 4 evaluates data collected in recent years on highly irradiated steel and estimates the possible misorientation evolution under irradiation. The section introduces and discusses the concept of in-service-induced damage as an irradiation-assisted stress-corrosion cracking precursor. Section 5 summarizes the work performed. As expected, the present work results are beneficial for exploring and understanding degradation mechanisms in highly irradiated in-core materials found in light water reactors after long-term in-service life.

Safety Analysis Report for Packagings – Model 9979 Type AF Shipping Package

This Safety Analysis Report for Packaging (SARP) documents the performance of the Department of Energy (DOE) Model USA/9979/AF-96 shipping package and compliance with the regulatory safety requirements of Title 10 and Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations. The SARP is prepared in accordance with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Order 460.1D. The Model 9979 Type A Fissile shipping package replaces the Department of Transportation (DOT) UN1A2 Specification Packaging. Formerly, the UN1A2 was authorized under Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 173.417 (2004) for transport of Type A quantities of fissile material over public highways. In accordance with the Federal Register, final rule making issued on January 26, 2004, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, in a joint effort with the Department of Transportation, initiated a planned phase out of multiple Specification Packagings from 49 CFR 173, the UN1A2 being one. The rulemaking mandated, by law, removal of these specification packagings from service no later than September 30, 2008. The 9979 is a Performance Packaging and replaces the UN1A2 Specification Packaging. The Packaging Technology and Transportation Engineering (PT&TE) organization of the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is the Design Authority and Design Agency for the 9979.
