Upper boundaries of active galactic nucleus regions in optical diagnostic diagrams

The distribution of galaxies in optical diagnostic diagrams can provide information about their physical parameters when compared with ionization models under proper assumptions. By using a sample of central emitting regions from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey (MaNGA), we find evidence of the existence of upper boundaries for narrow-line regions (NLRs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in optical Baldwin, Phillips & Terlevich (BPT) diagrams, especially in diagrams involving [Sii]λλ6716, 6731/Hα. Photoionization models can reproduce the boundaries well, as a consequence of the decrease of [Sii]λλ6716, 6731/Hα and [Oiii]λ5007/Hβ ratios at very high metallicity. Whilst the exact location of the upper boundary in the [Sii] BPT diagram depends only weakly on the electron density of the ionized cloud and the secondary nitrogen prescription, its dependence on the shapes of the input spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is much stronger. This allows us to constrain the power-law index of the AGN SED between 1 Ryd and ~100 Ryd to be less than or equal to -1.40 ± 0.05. The coverage of photoionization models in the [Nii] BPT diagram has a stronger dependence on the electron density and the secondary nitrogen prescription. With the density constrained by the [Sii] doublet ratio and the input SED constrained by the [Sii] BPT diagram, we find that the extent of the data in the [Nii] BPT diagram favours those prescriptions with high N/O ratios. Furthermore, although shock-ionized clouds can produce line ratios similar to those from photoionization, the resulting shapes of the upper boundaries, if they exist, would likely be different from those of photoionizing origin.

A thirty-four billion solar mass black hole in SMSS J2157–3602, the most luminous known quasar

ABSTRACT From near-infrared spectroscopic measurements of the Mg ii emission line doublet, we estimate the black hole (BH) mass of the quasar, SMSS J215728.21–360215.1, as being (3.4 ± 0.6) × 1010 M⊙ and refine the redshift of the quasar to be z = 4.692. SMSS J2157 is the most luminous known quasar, with a 3000 Å luminosity of (4.7 ± 0.5) × 1047 erg s−1 and an estimated bolometric luminosity of 1.6 × 1048 erg s−1, yet its Eddington ratio is only ∼0.4. Thus, the high luminosity of this quasar is a consequence of its extremely large BH – one of the most massive BHs at z > 4.

Discovery of multiple p-mode pulsation frequencies in the roAp star, HD 86181

ABSTRACT We report the frequency analysis of a known roAp star, HD 86181 (TIC 469246567), with new inferences from Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data. We derive the rotation frequency to be νrot = 0.48753 ± 0.00001 d−1. The pulsation frequency spectrum is rich, consisting of two doublets and one quintuplet, which we interpret to be oblique pulsation multiplets from consecutive, high-overtone dipole, quadrupole, and dipole modes. The central frequency of the quintuplet is 232.7701 d−1 (2.694 mHz). The phases of the sidelobes, the pulsation phase modulation, and a spherical harmonic decomposition all show that the quadrupole mode is distorted. Following the oblique pulsator model, we calculate the rotation inclination, i, and magnetic obliquity, β, of this star, which provide detailed information about the pulsation geometry. The i and β derived from the best fit of the pulsation amplitude and phase modulation to a theoretical model, including the magnetic field effect, slightly differ from those calculated for a pure quadrupole, indicating the contributions from ℓ = 4, 6, 8,... are small. Non-adiabatic models with different envelope convection conditions and physics configurations were considered for this star. It is shown that models with envelope convection almost fully suppressed can explain the excitation at the observed pulsation frequencies.

Coordinated time variability of multi-phase ultra-fast outflows in J132216.25 + 052446.3

ABSTRACT We present a time variability analysis of broad absorption lines (BAL; spread over the velocity range of 5800–29 000 km s−1) seen in the spectrum of J132216.25 + 052446.3 (zem = 2.04806) at ten different epochs spanning over 19 yr. The strongest absorption component (BAL-A; spread over 5800–9900 km s−1) is made up of several narrow components having velocity separations close to C iv doublet splitting. The C iv, N v, and Si iv absorption from BAL-A show correlated optical depth variability without major changes in the velocity structure. A very broad and shallow absorption (BAL-C; spread over the velocity range 15 000–29 000 km s−1) emerged during our monitoring period coinciding with a dimming episode of J1322 + 0524. All the identified absorption lines show correlated variability with the equivalent widths increasing with decreasing flux. This together with the C iv emission line variability is consistent with ionization being the main driver of the correlated variability. The observed UV-continuum variations are weaker than what is required by the photoionization models. This together with a scatter in the C iv equivalent width at a given continuum flux can be understood if variations of the C iv ionizing photons are much larger than that of the UV continuum, the variations in the ionizing photon and UV fluxes are not correlated and/or the covering factor of the flow varies continuously. We suggest BAL-A is produced by a stable clumpy outflow located beyond the broad emission line region and BAL-C is a newly formed wind component located near the accretion disc and both respond to changes in the ionizing continuum.

Constraining IGM enrichment and metallicity with the C iv forest correlation function

ABSTRACT The distribution and abundance of metals in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) have implications for galaxy formation and evolution models, and has been argued to be sensitive to the Universe’s reionization history. However, reduced sensitivity in the near-IR implies that probing IGM metals at z > 4 is currently out of reach with the traditional method of detecting individual absorbers. We present a new technique based on clustering analysis that enables the detection of these weak IGM absorbers. We investigate the two-point correlation function (2PCF) of the ${\rm C\, {\small IV}}$ forest as a probe of IGM metallicity and enrichment topology by simulating the z = 4.5 IGM with models of inhomogeneous metal distributions. The 2PCF of the ${\rm C\, {\small IV}}$ forest demonstrates a clear peak at a characteristic separation corresponding to the doublet separation of the ${\rm C\, {\small IV}}$ line. The peak amplitude scales quadratically with metallicity, while enrichment topology affects both the shape and amplitude of the 2PCF. For models consistent with the distribution of metals at z ∼ 3, we find that we can constrain [C/H] to within 0.2 dex, log$\, M_{\rm {min}}$ to within 0.4 dex, and R to within 15 per cent. We show that CGM absorbers can be reliably identified and masked, thus recovering the underlying IGM signal. The auto-correlation of the metal-line forest presents a compelling avenue to constrain the IGM metallicity and enrichment topology with high precision at z > 4, thereby pushing such measurements into the Epoch of Reionization.

Calibrating the absolute magnitude of type Ia supernovae in nearby galaxies using [O II ] and implications for H 0

The present state of cosmology is facing a crisis where there is a fundamental disagreement in measurements of the Hubble constant ($H_{0}$), with significant tension between the early and late Universe methods. Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are important to measuring $H_{0}$ through the astronomical distance ladder. However, there remains potential to better standardize SN Ia light curves by using known dependencies on host galaxy properties after the standard light curve width and colour corrections have been applied to the peak SN Ia luminosities. To explore this, we use the 5-yr photometrically identified SNe Ia sample obtained by the Dark Energy Survey, along with host galaxy spectra obtained by the Australian Dark Energy Survey. Using host galaxy spectroscopy, we find a significant trend with the equivalent width (EW) of the [O II ] $\lambda \lambda$ 3727, 29 doublet, a proxy for specific star formation rate, and Hubble residuals. We find that the correlation with [O II ] EW is a powerful alternative to the commonly used mass step after initial light-curve corrections. Applying this [O II ] EW correction to 20 SNe Ia in calibrator galaxies observed with WiFeS, we examined the impact on SN Ia absolute magnitudes and $H_{0}$. Our [O II ] EW corrections result in $H_{0}$ values ranging between 73.04 and 73.51 $km$ $s^{-1} \, Mpc^{-1}$, with a combined statistical and systematic uncertainty of $\sim 1.31$ $km$ $s^{-1} \, Mpc^{-1}$. However, even with this additional correction, the impact of host galaxy properties in standardizing SNe Ia appears limited in reducing the current tension ($\sim 5\sigma$) with the cosmic microwave background result for $H_{0}$.

Hidden frustration in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdCd 3 ⁢P 3

We report a study of the magnetic ground state and crystal electric field (CEF) scheme in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdCd 3 ⁢P 3 . Combined neutron scattering, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements demonstrate that the Nd 3+ moments occupying the triangular lattice in this material harbor hidden signs of frustration not detected in typical Curie-Weiss-based parametrization of the frustration index (𝑓 = Θ 𝐶⁢𝑊 /𝑇 𝑁 ). This is evidenced by a zero-field splitting of the Kramers' ground state and first excited state doublets at temperatures far in excess of 𝑇 𝑁 as well as signatures of low-energy fluctuations for 𝑇 ≫ 𝑇 𝑁 . As a result, a suppression of the zero-field ordered moment relative to its field saturation value is observed, and the impacts of this magnetic frustration as well as the coexisting bond frustration in the CdP honeycomb network on the physical properties of NdCd 3 ⁢P3 are discussed.

Decay of the proton-unbound superradiant state in 13 N

Here, the 12 C ( 3 He, 𝑑)⁢ 13 N* reaction is studied in an experiment with a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph, in coincidence with protons detected in silicon detectors near the target. This allows for the observation of angular correlation patterns between the proton transfer and proton decays from populated unbound resonances. A formalism describing the spin polarization of direct reactions is developed to analyze these correlations, and is verified on the known directionally asymmetric decay distributions arising from parity mixing in the 13 N ⁡($\frac{3}{2}$ − , $\frac{5}{2}$ + ) doublet. The same formalism is used to study the decays from the continuum-aligned, broad 3/2 + resonance at 7.9 MeV excitation energy, which arises from superradiant coupling. The observed asymmetric angular correlation patterns are approximately reproduced by adding an “artificial” 3/2 − resonance with strength equal to that of the reaction formalism. This parity-mixing approach serves as a first approximation to a more advanced reaction model of rapid reaction and decay sequences.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for dark matter particles produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a bottom quark-antiquark pair in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is presented. The data, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb −1 . The analysis is performed in exclusive categories targeting both Lorentz-boosted (merged) and resolved 𝑏 jet pair topologies, covering a wide range of Higgs boson transverse momentum. A statistical combination is made with a previous search using data collected in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 . The observed data agree with the standard model background predictions. Constraints are placed on models predicting new particles or interactions, such as those in the simplified frameworks of baryonic-𝑍′ and 2⁢HDM + 𝑎, where the latter is a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model featuring a heavy pseudoscalar with an additional light pseudoscalar. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section for these models. For the baryonic-𝑍′ model, 𝑍′ boson masses below 2.25 TeV are excluded for a dark matter particle candidate mass of 1 GeV. In the 2⁢HDM + 𝑎 model, heavy pseudoscalar masses between 850 and 1300 GeV are excluded for a light pseudoscalar mass of 350 GeV.

Level structure of light neutron-rich La isotopes beyond the 𝑁 = 82 shell closure

Here, the high spin excited states of Lanthanum isotopes 140–143 La, above the 𝑁 = 82 closed shell, were populated in fission reactions. The prompt 𝛾-ray transitions were measured using two complementary methods: (a) in coincidence with the isotopically identified fragments produced in the fission of the 238 U + 9 Be system using the Variable Mode Spectrometer (VAMOS++) and the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) spectrometer, and (b) high statistics threefold 𝛾−𝛾−𝛾 and fourfold 𝛾−𝛾−𝛾−𝛾 coincidence data from the spontaneous fission of 252 Cf using the Gammasphere. This work reports the first identification of a pair of parity doublet structures in 143 La and the new high spin level structure in 140–142 La from prompt 𝛾-ray spectroscopy. The level structures are interpreted in terms of the systematics of neighboring odd-𝑍 nuclei above the 𝑍 = 50 shell closure and large-scale shell model calculations. The present results indicate the presence of stable octupole deformation in 143 La. The excitation energy pattern and their comparison with neighboring isotones, moving away from the 𝑁 = 82 closed shell, point towards a transition from single-particle structures to an alternating parity rotational band structure in the La isotopic chain.

Isolated spin ladders in 𝐿⁢𝑛 2 ⁢Ti 9 ⁢Sb 11 (𝐿⁢𝑛 :La–Nd) metals

Here we present the discovery and characterization of a series of antimonides 𝐿⁢𝑛 2 ⁢Ti 9⁢ Sb 11 (Ln: La–Nd) that exhibit well-isolated, 𝑛 = 2 rare-earth spin ladders. We discuss the structure of these compounds, with a particular focus on the magnetic Ln spin ladders. Nd 2 ⁢Ti 9 ⁢Sb 11 and Ce 2 ⁢Ti 9 ⁢Sb 11 exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions and a well-defined doublet ground state, whereas Pr 2 ⁡Ti 9⁢ Sb 11 exhibits a weakly magnetic singlet ground state. Nd 2 ⁢Ti 9 ⁢Sb 11 is a poor metal with an electrical resistivity of 0.1m⁢Ω cm at 300 K and weak temperature dependence. The thermal conductivity along the ladder exhibits significant field dependence even at 40 K, considerably higher than the magnetic ordering temperature of 1.1 K. Compared to compounds with transition metal spin ladders, the rare-earth elements impart much lower energy scales, making these compounds highly tunable with external stimuli like magnetic fields. In conclusion, the diverse magnetism of the rare-earth ions and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions further contribute to the potential for a wide array of rich magnetic ground states, positioning these materials as a rare example of an inorganic square spin-ladder platform.

Composite quarks and leptons with embedded QCD

We construct a model of quark and lepton compositeness based on an 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) gauge interaction that confines chiral preons, which are also charged under the weakly coupled 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐿 ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝑅 gauge group. The breaking of the latter, down to the Standard Model group, is achieved by scalar 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) bound states at a scale in the 30–100 TeV range. The embedding of the QCD gauge group in 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS slows down the running of 𝛼 𝑠 in the UV. We estimate the effects of the strongly coupled 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(15) dynamics on the running of the 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(4) PS ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐿 ×𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝑅 gauge couplings, which likely remain perturbative beyond the compositeness scale of about 10 3 –10 4 TeV, and even above a unification scale. A composite vectorlike lepton doublet acquires a mass in the TeV range probed at future colliders, and an extended Higgs sector arises from six-preon bound states.

Anisotropic magnetism and Kondo-lattice behavior in the frustrated antiferromagnet Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5

Here, we report the synthesis and physical characterization of single-crystalline Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5 , a previously unexplored member of the Ce 3 ⁢𝑀⁢𝑃⁢𝑛 5 family. This compound crystallizes in the hexagonal 𝑃⁢6 3 /𝑚⁢𝑐⁢𝑚 structure, featuring an anisotropic Ce sublattice composed of zigzag chains along the 𝑐 axis and a distorted kagome-like network in the basal plane. Magnetization measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below 𝑇 𝑁 ≈ 4.2K with strong magnetic anisotropy and multiple field-induced metamagnetic transitions for fields applied perpendicular to [001], leading to a dome-shaped 𝐻–𝑇 phase diagram. Electrical transport exhibits characteristic signatures of a Ce-based Kondo lattice, including broad resistivity maxima and pronounced field-dependent anomalies in the magnetoresistance and Hall response that track the magnetic phase boundaries. Specific-heat measurements confirm the magnetic transition and show that the full R ⁢ln⁡ 2 entropy expected for a Ce 3+ Kramers doublet is recovered by 20 K, indicating an extended temperature range of magnetic fluctuations consistent with Kondo correlations. Our results establish Ce 3 ⁢MgBi 5 as a platform within the Ce 3 ⁢𝑀⁢𝑃⁢𝑛 5 family for exploring the interplay of geometric frustration, magnetic anisotropy, and Kondo-lattice physics under applied magnetic fields.

Emergent quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetism in the distorted kagome magnet CePtPb

CePtPb hosts a distorted kagome lattice of Ce 3+ ions, providing a clean platform to investigate how reduced local symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling reshape frustrated magnetism. Magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric effect measurements, combined with a symmetry analysis of the single-ion anisotropy, demonstrate that the local 𝑚⁢2⁢𝑚 site symmetry selects a nearly Ising-like Kramers doublet with easy axes lying within the 𝑎⁢𝑏 plane. This results in three distinct in-plane Ising directions and an overall easy-plane anisotropy. The low-energy magnetic response is well captured by a three-sublattice Ising model, which quantitatively reproduces the saturation magnetization for arbitrary in-plane field orientations, including $[110]$ and $[1\bar{⁢1}⁢0]$, as well as the ratio of the field-induced critical fields. For 𝐵∥$[110]$, the phase diagram exhibits two quantum critical points at 𝐵 c⁢1 = 0.25T and 𝐵 c⁢2 = 0.55T, arising from the sequential polarization of the three Ising sublattices. In conclusion, these results reveal that the system develops quasi-one-dimensional spin chains along the 𝑐 axis, emerging from the nominally three-dimensional crystal structure composed of stacked kagome layers, and illustrate how reduced local symmetry can drive effective dimensional reduction in rare-earth Ising magnets.

Magnetic field induced modification of a first-order ferromagnetic transition in Eu 2 ⁢In

Here, we present a comprehensive study of the temperature-and magnetic-field-dependent magnetization, specific heat, and local crystal structure across the first-order ferromagnetic–paramagnetic transition in Eu 2 ⁢In. Anomalies in the magnetocaloric response are observed near 𝐻 ≈ 25 kOe, including changes in field scaling of magnetic entropy, local entropy exponent, and universal master curve, which suggest an apparent weakening of the first-order character of the transition. However, quantitative analysis of the magnetocaloric parameters together with modified Arrott plots demonstrates that the transition remains first order up to at least 70 kOe. Specific-heat measurements reveal a field-induced splitting of the sharp zero-field anomaly into a doublet, providing a natural explanation for the change in the magnetocaloric response. Magnetic-field-dependent extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements show no detectable field-induced changes in the local coordination environment of Eu. We therefore attribute these observations to a magnetic-field-induced two-step transition process in Eu 2 ⁢In.

High-resolution spectroscopy of neutral Yb atoms in a solid Ne matrix

Here, we present an experimental and theoretical study of the absorption and emission spectra of Yb atoms in a solid Ne matrix at a resolution of 0.025 nm. Five absorption bands were identified as due to transitions from the 4 f 14 5 d 0 6 s 2 1 S 0 ground-state configuration to 4 f 14 5 d 0 6 s 6 p and 4 f 13 5 d 1 6 s 2 configurations. The two lowest-energy bands were assigned to outer-shell transitions to 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 and 1 P 1 atomic states and displayed the structure of a broad doublet and an asymmetric triplet, respectively. The remaining three higher-frequency bands were assigned to inner-shell transitions to distinct J = 1 states arising from the 4 f 13 5 d 1 6 s 2 configuration and were highly structured with narrow linewidths. A classical simulation was performed to identify the stability and symmetry of possible trapping sites in the Ne crystal. It showed that the overarching 1 + 2 structure of the high-frequency bands could be predominantly ascribed to crystal-field splitting in the axial field of a 10-atom vacancy of C 4 v symmetry. Their prominent substructures were shown to be manifestations of phonon sidebands associated with the zero-phonon lines on each crystal-field state. Unprecedented for a metal–rare-gas system, resolution of individual phonon states on an allowed electronic transition was possible under excitation spectroscopy which reflects the semiquantum nature of solid Ne. In contrast to the absorption spectra, emission spectra produced by steady-state excitation into the 1 P 1 absorption band consisted of simple, unstructured fluorescence bands.

Rephasing spectral diffusion in time-bin spin-spin entanglement protocols

Generating high-fidelity spin-spin entanglement is an essential task of quantum repeater networks for the distribution of quantum information across long distances. Solid-state-based spin-photon interfaces are promising candidates to realize nodes of a quantum network, but are often limited by spectral diffusion of the optical transition, which results in phase errors on the entangled states. Here, we introduce a method to correct phase errors from quasi-static frequency fluctuations after the entangled state is generated, by shelving the emitters in the excited state to refocus the unknown phase. For quasi-static frequency fluctuations, the fidelity is determined only by the lifetime of the excited state used for shelving, making it particularly suitable for systems with a long-lived shelving state with correlated spectral diffusion. Such a shelving state may be found in Kramers doublet systems such as rare-earth emitters and color centers in Si or SiC interfaced with nanophotonic cavities with a strongly frequency-dependent Purcell enhancement. Furthermore, the protocol can be used to generate high-fidelity entangled spin pairs without reducing the rate of entanglement generation.

Low-energy magnons in the chiral ferrimagnet Cu 2 OSeO 3 : A coarse-grained approach

We report a comprehensive neutron scattering study of low energy magnetic excitations in the breathing pyrochlore helimagnetic Cu2OSeO3. Fully documenting the four lowest energy magnetic modes that leave the ferrimagnetic configuration of the “strong tetrahedra” intact (| ℏ ω| < 13 meV), we find gapless quadratic dispersion at the Γ point for energies above 0.2 meV, two doublets separated by 1.6(2) meV at the R point, and a bounded continuum at the X point. Our constrained rigid spin cluster model relates these features to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and the incommensurate helical ground state. Combining conventional spin wave theory with a spin cluster form factor accurately reproduces the measured equal time structure factor through multiple Brillouin zones. An effective spin Hamiltonian describing complex anisotropic intercluster interactions is obtained.
