A high-power dual-directional coupler

A dual-directional loop coupler in WR 430 waveguide was installed at DSS 14 as part of the system to measure station range delay. This installation was necessary to provide special test translator signal injection ports for the Voyager near-earth calibration sequence, which required that the SPD maser be bypassed to prevent saturation of the receivers. The design of the dual coupler and testing of this device at high power is discussed.

A demonstration of dual spacecraft tracking conducted with the Viking spacecraft during the approach phase

In the case of interplanetary space missions involving two spacecraft, such as Viking, significant navigation advantages may sometimes be achieved (at least for the trailing vehicle) by determining the orbit of one relative to the other, or otherwise combining the data from the two spacecraft. Dual spacecraft navigation concepts have been investigated by Chao et al. (1976). New analytical models for the dual spacecraft data types are presented and results are reported from a more recent demonstration conducted during the approach phase of the Viking mission. The demonstration was based on data taken two weeks before Mars orbit insertion of the second Viking spacecraft. The demonstration was designed to show that the approaching probe could be tied accurately to the planet through the orbiter. Attention is given to the geometry of the Viking B approach trajectory, the accuracy of the delivered estimates for midcourse maneuvers, and an algorithm of data processing.

Specific-optimal control with a dual minimal-order observer-based compensator

The steady-state optimal control of a linear time-invariant stochastic system by means of a minimal-order dual-observer-based compensator is considered in this paper. The structure of the compensator is fixed while the associated gains are to be chosen so as to minimize a quadratic penalty on the plant state. Necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality are given, and an explicit solution is displayed. Salient features pertaining to the optimal system are: a decoupling property, a projection property, and an innovation property. Finally, it is shown that this design corresponds to a singular LQG problem, which is precisely the dual of another singular LQG problem: namely Newmann's problem. A complete picture is then given showing clearly the correspondence between the two designs.

Efficiency enhancement of dual-mode traveling wave tubes at saturation and in the linear range by use of spent-beam refocusing and multistage depressed collectors

An axisymmetric, multistage depressed collector of fixed geometric design was evaluated in conjunction with an octave-bandwidth, dual-mode TWT. The TWT was operated over a wide range of conditions to simulate different applications. The collector was operated in three-, four-, and five-stage configurations, and its performance was optimized (within the constraint of fixed geometric design) over the range of TWT operating conditions covered. For operation of the dual-mode TWT at and near saturation, the collectors increased the TWT overall efficiency by a factor of 2 1/2 to 3 1/2. Collector performance was relatively constant for both the high and low TWT modes and for operation of the TWT across an octave bandwidth. For operation of the TWT in the linear, low-distortion range, collector efficiencies of 90 percent and greater were obtained, leading to a five- to twelvefold increase in the TWT overall efficiency for the range of operating conditions covered and reasonably high (greater than 25 percent) overall efficiencies well below saturation.

Testing and analysis of dual-mode adaptive landing gear, taxi mode test system for YF-12A

The effectiveness of a dual mode adaptive landing gear system in reducing the dynamic response of an airplane during ground taxiing was studied. The dynamic taxi tests of the YF-12A research airplane are presented. A digital computer program which simulated the test conditions is discussed. The dual mode system as tested provides dynamic taxi response reductions of 25 percent at the cg and 30 to 45 percent at the cockpit.

Discrimination of geologic units in Death Valley using dual frequency and polarization imaging radar data

A simultaneous analysis of dual-frequency and dual-polarization radar imagery of an area located in the central part of Death Valley, Calif., is discussed. The radar imagery analyzed consists of like-polarized L-band, cross-polarized L-band, and like-polarized X-band imagery digitally combined and ratioed to enhance the variation in the backscatter cross section of different geologic units. It is shown that simultaneous analysis of such radar imagery leads to a synergism effect which, in the case of the area studied in Death Valley, allows nearly complete discrimination of surficial geologic units. Radar backscatter is found generally to increase with roughness from smooth Quaternary sand facies to rough and extremely rough Quaternary silty rock salt.

A dual-amplifier hot-wire anemometer

The conceptual design of a dual-amplifier constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer is described. This hot-wire anemometer consists of three basic independent modules: a Wheatstone bridge in which the hot wire is one of its arms, an error-correction amplifier, and a voltage-controlled current source. The last two modules constitute the feedback network of this hot-wire anemometer. Thus the output voltage across the wire is a true function of the instantaneous changes in the wire resistance induced by the cooling effect of the flow. The dual-amplifier is capable of reaching relatively high frequency response through adequate selection of its active elements. Suitable gain of the error-correction amplifier and proper choice of the transfer function of the current source has yielded a frequency bandwidth up to 200 kHz.

A decision-directed network for dual-polarization crosstalk cancellation

Frequency reuse in the specific form of dual-polarized microwave communication systems has grown in importance in recent years as a practical means of radio spectrum conservation. Ideally the capacity of a given frequency allocation can be doubled through dual-polarization. However, hardware imperfections and propagation effects, particularly rain depolarization, prevent the achievement of this doubling without severe system performance degradation. A decision-directed cross-polarization correction network is presented whose operation depends on only simple base-band signal processing. No pilot tones or frequency offsets are required. The loop can work with any two-dimensional signal set for digital data transmission. The loop has been experimentally verified and provides a means of doubling the data capacity with little performance degradation.

Dual-Alloy Disks are Formed by Powder Metallurgy

High-performance disks have widely varying properties from hub to rim. Dual property disk is fabricated using two nickel-base alloys, AF-115 for rim and Rene 95 for hub. Dual-alloy fabrication may find applications in automobiles, earth-moving equipment, and energy conversion systems as well as aircraft powerplants. There is potential for such applications as shafts, gears, and blades.

Scan performance of dual offset reflector antennas for satellite communications

The basic numerical steps of a method to analyze dual offset reflector antennas are reviewed. The technique employs an alternative approach to calculating the secondary pattern of an arbitrarily shaped offset dual reflector antenna, and is based on the application of the geometrical theory of diffraction from the subreflector and physical optics (PO) scattering from the main reflector. The PO integral is evaluated using the Jacobi-Bessel series expansions, and numerical results are presented for the off-axis scan performance of an offset clear aperture Cassegrain antenna. Results indicate that the equivalent paraboloid concept can be used to determine the location of displaced feed and define the local optimal focal plane, and the scan performance of the Cassegrain reflector can be improved if the feed is located on the true opimal surface.

Satellite borne dual millimetric wave length radar

The failure of attempts to accurately measure precipitation by using a single quality that is used to deduce the desired precipitation parameter through a derived relationship is discussed. A number of dual measurement techniques for the accurate determination of instantaneous rainfall rates from space are proposed. It is concluded that dual measurement techniques show high promise for measuring precipitation parameters with greater accuracy than that which was possible in the past.

Fatigue of graphite/epoxy /0/90/45/-45/s laminates under dual stress levels

A model for the prediction of loading sequence effects on the statistical distribution of fatigue life and residual strength in composite materials is generalized and applied to (0/90/45/-45)s graphite/epoxy laminates. Load sequence effects are found to be caused by both the difference in residual strength when failure occurs (boundary effect) and the effect of previously applied loads (memory effect). The model allows the isolation of these two effects, and the estimation of memory effect magnitudes under dual fatigue loading levels. It is shown that the material memory effect is insignificant, and that correlations between predictions of the number of early failures agree with the verification tests, as do predictions of fatigue life and residual strength degradation under dual stress levels.

Jet trajectories and surface pressures induced on a body of revolution with various dual jet configurations

A jet in a cross flow is of interest in practical situations including jet-powered VTOL aircraft. Three aspects of the problem have received little prior study. First is the effect of the angle of the jet to the crossflow. Second is the performance of dual-jet configurations. The third item for further study is a jet injected from a body of revolution as opposed to a flat plate. The Test Plan for this work was designed to address these three aspects. The experiments were conducted in the 7 x 10 tunnel at NASA Ames at velocities 14.5 - 35.8 m/sec (47.6 - 117.4 ft/sec). Detailed pressure distributions are presented for single and dual jets over a range of velocity ratios from 3 to 8, spacings from 2 to 6 diameters and injection angles of 90, 75 and 60 degrees. Some flowfield measurements are also presented, and it is shown that a simple analysis is capable of predicting the trajectories of the jets.

Surface pressures induced on a flat plate with in-line and side-by-side dual jet configurations

A jet in a crossflow is of interest in numerous practical situations including jet-powered VTOL aircraft. Two aspects of the problem have received little prior study. First is the effect of the angle of the jet to the crossflow. Second is the performance of dual-jet configurations both in-line and side-by-side. The test plan for this work was designed to address these two aspects. The experiments were conducted in the 7 x 10 tunnel at NASA Ames at velocities from 14.5 - 35.8 m/sec (47.6 - 117.4 ft/sec.). Detailed pressure distributions are presented for single and dual jets over a range of velocity ratios from 3 to 8, spacings from 2 to 6 diameters and injection angles of 90, 75, and 105 degrees. The effects of the various parameters and the differences between the axisymmetric and flat plate geometries on the nature, size, shape, and strength of the interaction regions on the body surfaces are shown.

Equivalent-circuit consideration of dual-gate MESFETs at high frequency

The simplified high-frequency equivalent circuit of a dual-gate FET is described. It is shown that the input impedance is similar to that of a single-gate FET but the output resistance and capacitance (parallel equivalent circuit) are higher. The output resistance and the transconductance decrease as frequency increases. The unilateral gain of a dual-gate FET rolls off 12 dB/octave.

The dual-frequency scatterometer reexamined

The utility of dual frequency scatterometers in measuring ocean wave directional spectra can be increased by adding third frequency to the system. The background which effectively limits signal detectability in dual frequency operation can be made a part of the signal through the addition of this third frequency. Signal detectability is limited only by system thermal noise and space based operation becomes more feasible.
