The price of a large electron Yukawa modification

The theoretical implications of an electron Yukawa modification are considered in the context of a possible Higgs pole run at FCC-ee, aimed at bounding this coupling. We start from an effective field theory viewpoint, considering the impact of renormalisation group effects on related observables and also examining assumptions on the broader UV flavour structure. We then give an overview of the landscape of simplified models, investigating phenomenological constraints arising at higher orders. A short discussion of fine-tuning is also included.

A natural mechanism for approximate Higgs alignment in the 2HDM

The 2HDM possesses a neutral scalar interaction eigenstate whose tree-level properties coincide with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson. In light of the LHC Higgs data which suggests that the observed Higgs boson is SM-like, it follows that the mixing of the SM Higgs interaction eigenstate with the other neutral scalar interaction eigenstates of the 2HDM should be suppressed, corresponding to the so-called Higgs alignment limit. The exact Higgs alignment limit can arise naturally due to a global symmetry of the scalar potential. If this symmetry is softly broken, then the Higgs alignment limit becomes approximate (although still potentially consistent with the current LHC Higgs data). In this paper, we obtain the approximate Higgs alignment suggested by the LHC Higgs data as a consequence of a softly broken global symmetry of the Higgs Lagrangian. However, this can only be accomplished if the Yukawa sector of the theory is extended. We propose an extended 2HDM with vector-like top quark partners, where explicit mass terms in the top sector provide the source of the soft symmetry breaking of a generalized CP symmetry. In this way, we can realize approximate Higgs alignment without a significant fine-tuning of the model parameters. We then explore the implications of the current LHC bounds on vector-like top quark partners for the success of our proposed scenario.

Accelerating cosmology from Λ < 0 gravitational effective field theory

A large class of Λ < 0 cosmologies have big-bang/big crunch spacetimes with time-symmetric backgrounds and asymptotically AdS Euclidean continuations suggesting a possible holographic realization. We argue that these models generically have time-dependent scalar fields, and these can lead to realistic cosmologies at the level of the homogeneous background geometry, with an accelerating phase prior to the turnaround and crunch. We first demonstrate via explicit effective field theory examples that models with an asymptotically AdS Euclidean continuation can also exhibit a period of accelerated expansion without fine tuning. We then show that certain significantly more tuned examples can give predictions arbitrarily close to a ΛCDM model. Finally, we demonstrate via an explicit construction that the potentials of interest can arise from a superpotential, thus suggesting that these solutions may be compatible with an underlying supersymmetric theory.

Higgs flavor phenomenology in a supersymmetric left-right model with parity

In this paper, we focus on the supersymmetric model with left-right (LR) symmetry, that is especially proposed in our previous work [ 1 ]. In this model, there are four Higgs doublets in order to realize the Standard Model (SM) fermion masses and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. The heavy Higgs doublets unavoidably have flavor changing couplings to the SM fermions and induce flavor-changing neutral currents at tree level. We study broader parameter space than the previous work with including the renormalization group corrections to the Yukawa couplings between the LR breaking scale, \( \mathcal{O} \) (10 13 ) GeV, and the supersymmetry breaking scales, \( \mathcal{O} \) (100) TeV. The CP violating observable in K – \( \overline{K} \) mixing, ϵ K , strongly constrains the model, so that heavy Higgs mass should be heavier than \( \mathcal{O} \) (100) TeV. We study the lepton flavor violating (LFV) processes setting heavy Higgs masses to be 170 TeV. The branching ratios of μ → 3 e and the μ – e conversion can be larger than 10 - 16 that could be covered by the future experiments. We also study the degree of fine-tuning in the parameter region that predicts testable LFV processes.

A realistic theory of E6 unification through novel intermediate symmetries

Abstract We propose a non-supersymmetric E 6 GUT with the scalar sector consisting of650⨁351′ ⨁27. Making use of the first representation for the initial symmetry breaking to an intermediate stage, and the latter two representations for second-stage breaking to the Standard Model and a realistic Yukawa sector, this theory represents the minimal E 6 GUT that proceeds through one of the intermediate stages that are novel compared to SU(5) or SO(10) GUT: trinification SU(3) C × SU(3) L × SU(3) R , SU(6) × SU(2) and flipped SO(10) × U(1). We analyze these possibilities under the choice of vacuum that preserves a ℤ 2 “spinorial parity”, which disentangles the chiral and vector-like fermions of E 6 and provides a dark matter candidate in the form of a (scalar) inert doublet. Three cases are shown to consistently unify under the extended survival hypothesis (with minimal fine-tuning): trinification symmetry SU(3) C × SU(3) L × SU(3) R with eitherLRorCRparity, and SU(6) CR × SU(2) L . Although the successful cases give a large range for proton lifetime estimates, all of them include regions consistent with current experimental bounds and within reach of forthcoming experiments. The scenario investigated in this paper essentially represents the unique (potentially) viable choice in the class of E 6 GUTs proceeding through a novel-symmetry intermediate stage, since non-minimal alternatives seem to be intrinsically non-perturbative.

Leptogenesis in parity solutions to the strong CP problem and Standard Model parameters

We study the simplest theories with exact spacetime parity that solve the strong CP problem and successfully generate the cosmological baryon asymmetry via decays of right-handed neutrinos. Lower bounds are derived for the masses of the right-handed neutrinos and for the scale of spontaneous parity breaking, v R . For generic thermal leptogenesis, v R ≳ 10 12 GeV, unless the small observed neutrino masses arise from fine-tuning. We compute v R in terms of the top quark mass, the QCD coupling, and the Higgs boson mass and find this bound is consistent with current data at 1σ. Future precision measurements of these parameters may provide support for the theory or, if v R is determined to be below 10 12 GeV, force modifications. However, modified cosmologies do not easily allow reductions in v R — no reduction is possible if leptogenesis occurs in the collisions of domain walls formed at parity breaking, and at most a factor 10 reduction is possible with non-thermal leptogenesis. Standard Model parameters that yield low values for v R can only be accommodated by having a high degree of degeneracy among the right-handed neutrinos involved in leptogenesis. If future precision measurements determine v R to be above 10 12 GeV, it is likely that higher-dimensional operators of the theory will yield a neutron electric dipole moment accessible to ongoing experiments. This is especially true in a simple UV completion of the neutrino sector, involving gauge singlet fermions, where the bound from successful leptogenesis is strengthened to v R ≳ 10 13 GeV.

TwInflation

The general structure of Hybrid Inflation remains a very well-motivated mechanism for lower-scale cosmic inflation in the face of improving constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio. However, as originally modeled, the “waterfall” field in this mechanism gives rise to a hierarchy problem (η–problem) for the inflaton after demanding standard effective field theory (EFT) control. We modify the hybrid mechanism and incorporate a discrete “twin” symmetry, thereby yielding a viable, natural and EFT-controlled model of non-supersymmetric low-scale inflation, “Twinflation”. Analogously to Twin Higgs models, the discrete exchange-symmetry with a “twin” sector reduces quadratic sensitivity in the inflationary potential to ultra-violet physics, at the root of the hierarchy problem. The observed phase of inflation takes place on a hilltop-like potential but without fine-tuning of the initial inflaton position in field-space. We also show that all parameters of the model can take natural values, below any associated EFT-cutoff mass scales and field values, thus ensuring straightforward theoretical control. We discuss the basic phenomenological considerations and constraints, as well as possible future directions.

Baryogenesis from decaying magnetic helicity in axiogenesis

Generating axion dark matter through the kinetic misalignment mechanism implies the generation of large asymmetries for Standard Model fermions in the early universe. Even if these asymmetries are washed out at later times, they can trigger a chiral plasma instability in the early universe. Similarly, a direct coupling of the axion with the hypercharge gauge field can trigger a tachyonic instability. These instabilities produce helical magnetic fields, which are preserved until the electroweak phase transition. At the electroweak phase transition, these become a source of baryon asymmetry, which can be much more efficient than the original axiogenesis proposal. We discuss constraints on axion dark matter production from the overproduction of the baryon asymmetry as well as a minimal, albeit fine-tuned setup, where both the correct dark matter abundance and baryon asymmetry can be achieved. For a given axion decay constant, this leads to a sharp prediction for the mass of the radial direction of the Peccei Quinn field, which is a soft mass scale in supersymmetric theories.

Superadditivity at large charge

The weak gravity conjecture has been invoked to conjecture that the dimensions of charged operators in a CFT should obey a superadditivity relation (sometimes referred to as convexity). In this paper, we study superadditivity of the operator spectrum in theories expanded about the semi-classical saddle point that dominates correlators of large charge operators. We explore this in two contexts. The first is a model with two scalar fields that carry different charges, at a non-trivial Wilson-Fisher fixed point. A careful analysis of the semi-classics for this two field model demonstrates that ‘quantum’ violations of superadditivity (those not forbidden by the conjecture) persist in the large charge regime. We then turn to study the general properties of CFTs at large charge as bottom-up EFTs. By a trial and error procedure we come up with a seemingly consistent family of examples violating the conjecture. In so doing the presence of a genuine dilaton field appears necessary. On the one hand our result demonstrates that the superadditivity conjecture cannot be proven purely on the basis of a bottom-up analysis. On the other hand, the need for a dilaton, with the corresponding infinite fine tuning, indicates the conjecture-violating EFTs are unlikely to be UV completable.

Residual symmetries and scalar multiplet vacuum alignment in non-Abelian flavour models

We demonstrate that, upon minimizing a renormalizable, single-scalar potential invariant under a non-Abelian symmetry, special orientations in the associated vacuum alignment of the scalar multiplet correspond to the preservation of a discrete residual flavour symmetry in the broken phase of the theory. Conversely, we show that these special scalar alignments are perturbed when additional Lagrangian operators (e.g. renormalizable, multi-flavon operators and/or effective, higher-dimensional operators) are present that break said residual symmetry, leading to a vacuum reorientation and phenomenological consequences. We therefore construct a one-to-one correspondence principle between broken residual symmetries and vacuum alignment corrections, providing a mechanism to identify (and correct) a subtle but persistent form of phenomenologically relevant fine-tuning embedded in — but often ignored by — most successful non-Abelian flavour models. We first establish this correspondence in a set of toy models based on the S4 permutation symmetry, and then apply the lessons learned to the more realistic A4 Altarelli-Feruglio and ∆(27) Universal Texture Zero models.

Naturalness and the muon magnetic moment

We study a predictive model for explaining the apparent deviation of the muon anomalous magnetic moment from the Standard Model expectation. There are no new scalars and hence no new hierarchy puzzles beyond those associated with the Higgs; the only new particles at the TeV scale are vector-like singlet and doublet leptons. Interestingly, this simple model provides a calculable example violating the Wilsonian notion of naturalness: despite the absence of any symmetries prohibiting its generation, the coefficient of the naively leading dimension-six operator for (g – 2) vanishes at one-loop. While effective field theorists interpret this either as a surprising UV cancellation of power divergences, or as a delicate cancellation between matching UV and calculable IR corrections to (g – 2) from parametrically separated scales, there is a simple explanation in the full theory: the loop integrand is a total derivative of a function vanishing in both the deep UV and IR. The leading contribution to (g – 2) arises from dimension-eight operators, and thus the required masses of new fermions are lower than naively expected, with a sizeable portion of parameter space already covered by direct searches at the LHC. The viable parameter space free of fine-tuning for the muon mass will be fully covered by future direct LHC searches, and all of the parameter space can be probed by precision measurements at planned future lepton colliders.

Mixed field theory

We consider scalar field theory defined over a direct product of the real and p-adic numbers. An adjustable dynamical scaling exponent z enters into the microscopic lagrangian, so that the Gaussian theories provide a line of fixed points. We argue that at z = 1/3, a branch of Wilson-Fisher fixed points joins onto the line of Gaussian theories. We compute standard critical exponents at the Wilson-Fisher fixed points in the region where they are perturbatively accessible, including a loop correction to the dynamical critical exponent. We show that the classical propagator contains oscillatory behavior in the real direction, though the amplitude of these oscillations can be made exponentially small without fine-tuning parameters of the theory. Similar oscillatory behavior emerges in Fourier space from two-loop corrections, though again it can be highly suppressed. We also briefly consider compact p-adic extra dimensions, showing in non-linear, classical, scalar field theories that a form of consistent truncation allows us to retain only finitely many Kaluza-Klein modes in an effective theory formulated on the non-compact directions.

Synthetic feed-forward loop circuit boosts transgene expression in sugarcane

Bio-based products derived from natural plant-derived materials offer a promising alternative to petroleum-based products, which are essential for achieving global sustainability (Gupta et al. 2022). Sugarcane provides 40% of the world’s biofuel (Brant et al. 2025). Recently, metabolic engineering of sugarcane for hyperaccumulation of biomass oil is emerging as a strategy to elevate the crop’s energy content (Cao et al. 2023; Maitra et al. 2024). Synthetic transcription factors offer a powerful tool for modulating entire metabolic pathways by enabling fine-tuned activation or repression of specific genes (Liu and Stewart 2016; Hooghvorst and Altpeter 2023). However, the application of these technologies faces challenges, including the availability of well-characterized genetic building blocks for precise manipulation of gene expression, and the inherently challenging properties of gene expression in highly polyploid crops like sugarcane (Liu and Stewart 2016).

Computational analysis of the tryptophan cation radical energetics in peroxidase Compound $\mathrm{I}$

Three well-characterized heme peroxidases (cytochrome c peroxidase = CCP, ascorbate peroxidase = APX, and Leishmania major peroxidase = LMP) all have a Trp residue tucked under the heme stacked against the proximal His heme ligand. The reaction of peroxidases with H 2 O 2 to give Compound I results in the oxidation of this Trp to a cationic radical in CCP and LMP but not in APX. Considerable experimental data indicate that the local electrostatic environment controls whether this Trp or the porphyrin is oxidized in Compound I. Attempts have been made to place the differences between these peroxidases on a quantitative basis using computational methods. These efforts have been somewhat limited by the approximations required owing to the computational cost of using fully solvated atomistic models with well-developed forcefields. This now has changed with available GPU computing power and the associated development of software. Here we employ thermodynamic integration and multistate Bennett acceptance ratio methods to help fine-tune our understanding on the energetic differences in Trp radical stabilization in all three peroxidases. These results indicate that the local solvent structure near the redox active Trp plays a significant role in stabilization of the cationic Trp radical.

Multiple pathways mediate chloroplast singlet oxygen stress signaling

Chloroplasts can respond to stress and changes in the environment by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS). Aside from being cytotoxic, ROS also have signaling capabilities. For example, the ROS singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) can initiate nuclear gene expression, chloroplast degradation, and cell death. Here to unveil the signaling mechanisms involved, researchers have used several 1 O 2 -producing Arabidopsis thaliana mutants as genetic model systems, including plastid ferrochelatase two (fc2), fluorescent in blue light (flu), chlorina 1 (ch1), and accelerated cell death 2 (acd2). Here, we compare these 1 O 2 -producing mutants to elucidate if they utilize one or more signaling pathways to control cell death and nuclear gene expression. Using publicly available transcriptomic data, we demonstrate fc2, flu, and ch1 share a core response to 1 O 2 accumulation, but maintain unique responses, potentially tailored to respond to their specific stresses. Subsequently, we used a genetic approach to determine if these mutants share 1 O 2 signaling pathways by testing the ability of genetic suppressors of one 1 O 2 producing mutant to suppress signaling in a different 1 O 2 producing mutant. Our genetic analyses revealed at least two different chloroplast 1 O 2 signaling pathways control cellular degradation: one specific to the flu mutant and one shared by fc2, ch1, and acd2 mutants, but with life-stage-specific (seedling vs. adult) features. Overall, this work reveals chloroplast stress signaling involving 1 O 2 is complex and may allow cells to finely tune their physiology to environmental inputs.

Neutron scattering in photosynthesis research: recent advances and perspectives for testing crop plants

The photosynthetic performance of crop plants under a variety of environmental factors and stress conditions, at the fundamental level, depends largely on the organization and structural flexibility of thylakoid membranes. These highly organized membranes accommodate virtually all protein complexes and additional compounds carrying out the light reactions of photosynthesis. Most regulatory mechanisms fine-tuning the photosynthetic functions affect the organization of thylakoid membranes at different levels of the structural complexity. In order to monitor these reorganizations, non-invasive techniques are of special value. On the mesoscopic scale, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has been shown to deliver statistically and spatially averaged information on the periodic organization of the thylakoid membranes in vivo and/or, in isolated thylakoids, under physiologically relevant conditions, without fixation or staining. More importantly, SANS investigations have revealed rapid reversible reorganizations on the timescale of several seconds and minutes. In this paper, we give a short introduction into the basics of SANS technique, advantages and limitations, and briefly overview recent advances and potential applications of this technique in the physiology and biotechnology of crop plants. We also discuss future perspectives of neutron crystallography and different neutron scattering techniques, which are anticipated to become more accessible and of more use in photosynthesis research at new facilities with higher fluxes and innovative instrumentation.

Synergic regulation of mechanically interlocked molecules via lanthanide-contraction-based metal modulation and constituent ratios

A set of mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) can be synthesized efficiently using a one-pot procedure by selecting different trivalent lanthanide metal cations (M 3+ , M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, or Lu) and adjusting the proportion of the reaction components. In this system, a flexible tetracationic macrocycle, often referred to as the “Texas-sized molecular box”, interacts with terephthalate dianions and trivalent lanthanide metal cations to form various structures. The transition from metal-organic rotaxane frameworks (MORFs) to metal-containing rotaxane supramolecular organic frameworks (RSOFs) is largely dictated by the lanthanide contraction effect, which leads to a decrease in the coordination number of the lanthanide ions. In addition, the nature of the MIMs within the MORFs can be fine-tuned by varying the ratio of the cation to the other components, allowing for additional control over the interlocked system. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate that the choice of metal cation and adjustments in the building block ratios component represent promising strategies for controlling the structures of MIM-based frameworks.

Development of Aluminum Scandium Nitride Molecular Dynamics Force Fields with Scalable Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimization

Scandium (Sc)-doped aluminum nitride (AlN) exhibits improved piezoelectric properties, which is favorable for sensor applications. Although many experimental studies exist to fine tune the material properties for design purposes, an atomistic level understanding of the structure-property (S-P) relationships is needed, which is the aim of this work. Molecular dynamics can be used to understand the S-P relationships. However, the limited availability of suitable force fields has been a major challenge for accurate property predictions. In this article, a robust force field calibration method using a scalable multi-objective Bayesian optimization approach is presented. Optimizations with three, six, and eight objectives are applied to calibrate aluminum scandium nitride force fields based on the piezoelectric characteristics, modulus of elasticity, and lattice parameters at different Sc-doped levels. Furthermore, the performances of the different force fields are compared, and the performance of the higher dimensional objective problems is discussed. The highly scalable molecular dynamics force field development method is successfully implemented, resulting in the creation of several aluminum scandium nitride molecular dynamics force fields for piezoelectric applications at varying Sc dope levels.
