Enhancing Fluid Flow Pressure and Saturation Prediction Accuracy and Reducing Uncertainty with Committee Machine – Illinois Basin Decatur Project (IBDP) as a Case Study

Presentation at the 17th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies GHGT-17 held in Calgary, Canada, October 20-24, 2024. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a way to play a critical role in the global transition to a low-emission economy. Current progress is hampered by a number of factors, among which the lack of risk-informed design tools and decision support frameworks is seen as a major roadblock. Significant interest exists in using artificial intelligence to accelerate CCS site feasibility studies, as well as to facilitate the permit application process. Existing works commonly train a single deep learning model. This work investigates the feasibility of using a conventional ensemble learning (committee machine) technique to further improve prediction accuracy. Ensemble-based algorithms generally improve over individual base learners in terms of robustness and accuracy. Deep ensembles, however, are time-consuming to create and train. A pragmatic question is whether small-sized ensembles may lead to prediction improvement. Here we evaluated the efficacy of an ensemble learning technique using the latent spectral model (LSM), an efficient deep neural operator algorithm, as base learners. Preliminary results, obtained using the Illinois Basin-Decatur Project (IBDP) carbon sequestration data/model, show that small-sized ensembles can improve prediction over the base learners, achieving prediction accuracy of ~1.6 psi root mean square error (RMSE) on pressure (relative the average reservoir pressure of 3150 psi), and less than 1.3% for saturation.

Comparison of Artificial Compressibility Methods for Coupled Laminar Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer

Artificial compressibility (AC) methods for incompressible flows perturb the mass continuity equation by the time derivative of the pressure field to achieve direct coupling between pressure and velocity without the need for a projection method. Several variations of the original AC method have been proposed (e.g., the entropically damped artificial compressibility [EDAC] method) that can, in some scenarios, improve on the original model. In this paper, we methodically compare the results of the original AC model and the EDAC model for both steady-state and transient problems with coupling between the momentum and energy equations. We demonstrate that the EDAC model and the AC model yield similar numerical results, and the EDAC model is 10%-20% faster than the AC model for a given problem.

Electromechanical flowmeter accurately monitors fluid flow

Electromechanical flowmeter remotely and accurately monitors the flow rate and total volume of a transparent liquid discharged from a dispensing system. A dual dispensing tube system provides a relative reference level which permits compensation for temperature variations.

Studies reveal effects of pipe bends on fluid flow cavitation

Incipient cavitation in liquids flowing in pipes curved in one plane are affected by the pipe bend radii and pipe diameters, but little by pipe bend angles ranging from 60 to 120 degrees. Critical cavitation indices decrease with higher Reynolds number and pressure ratio. Bulk liquid temperature increase lowers the mean critical velocity at which cavitation occurs.

Miniature valve accurately controls small volume fluid flow

Hydraulic or pneumatic actuated valve accurately controls small volume flow of liquids or gases by expanding or relaxing an O-ring within an annular flow space. In one application, 2 such valves were used to accurately meter small volumes of helium under a pressure of 1000 psi.

A temperature-controlled fluid flow regulator

Slide-type valve, constructed of materials having different coefficients of thermal expansion, provides variable flow area as the slides move in relation to each other with temperature changes.

Thermally induced oscillations in fluid flow

Theoretical investigation distinguishes the various mechanisms responsible for oscillations of pressure, temperature, and flow velocity, derives a quantitative description of the most troublesome mechanisms, and develops a capability to predict the occurrence of unstable flow.

Quick calculation method for fluid flow through duct systems

Conditions for subsonic compressible flow through duct systems are quickly and easily calculated using compact series of curves showing dimensionless parametric functions of Mach number and specific heat ratio. Method is directly applicable to analysis and design of compressible flow systems in industrial fields or processes.

Variable-area nozzle automatically controls fluid flow

Simple, passive nozzle requires no active control system to vary injection area. Injection area changes with changing pressure, thereby allowing greater flow as pressure increases. As pressure drop across nozzle is decreased, spring action of segments causes them to move inward, decreasing the flow area.
