Y-shaped tricatenar azobenzenes – functional liquid crystals with synclinic–anticlinic transitions and spontaneous helix formation

A series of achiral tricatenar rod-like molecules with a 3,5-disubstitution pattern at one end and a single alkyl chain at the other end of a rod-like azobenzene derived core is reported. Depending on temperature and alkyl chain length, these Y-shaped compounds self-assemble into different types of liquid crystalline (LC) phases, ranging from non-tilted and synclinic tilted hexatic, via non-tilted and anticlinic tilted smectic and bicontinuous cubic LC phases, to a spontaneous mirror symmetry broken isotropic liquid (Iso 1 [*]) or a related achiral liquid network phase (Iso 1 ). An additional tilted, but uniaxial smectic phase was observed at the transition between anticlinic and synclinic tilt correlation and was investigated by soft resonant X-ray scattering with respect to possible helix formation. This work provides a new concept for the design of technological interesting azobenzene based LC materials with anticlinic tilted smectic C phases (SmC a ) and with azobenzene units organized in the long range or short range helical network structures of bicontinuous cubic and chiral isotropic liquid phases, respectively. Core fluorination removes all lamellar phases, leaving only the cubic phase over wide temperature ranges, even at ambient temperature.

Giant spontaneous polarization for enhanced ferroelectric properties of biaxially oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) by mobile oriented amorphous fractions

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its random copolymers exhibit the most distinctive ferroelectric properties; however, their spontaneous polarization (60–105 mC m -2 ) is still inferior to those (>200 mC m -2 ) of the ceramic counterparts. In this work, we report an unprecedented spontaneous polarization ( P s = 140 mC m -2 ) for a highly poled biaxially oriented PVDF (BOPVDF) film, which contains a pure β crystalline phase. Given the crystallinity of ~0.52, the P s for the β phase ( P s,β ) is calculated to be 279 mC m -2 , if a simple two-phase model of semicrystalline polymers is assumed. This high P s,β is invalid, because the theoretical limit of P s,β is 185 mC m -2 , as calculated by density functional theory. To explain such a high P s for the poled BOPVDF, a third component in the amorphous phase must participate in the ferroelectric switching to contribute to the P s . Namely, an oriented amorphous fraction (OAF) links the lamellar crystal and the mobile amorphous fraction. From the hysteresis loop study, the OAF content was determined to be ~0.28, more than 50% of the amorphous phase. Because of the high polarizability of the OAFs, the dielectric constant of the poled BOPVDF reached nearly twice the value of conventional PVDF. Overall, the fundamental knowledge obtained from this study will provide a solid foundation for the future development of PVDF-based high performance electroactive polymers for wearable electronics and soft robotic applications.

Selective sequential infiltration synthesis of ZnO in the liquid crystalline phase of silicon-containing rod-coil block copolymers

The combination of block copolymer (BCP) thin film self-assembly and selective infiltration synthesis of inorganic materials into one BCP block provides access to various organic–inorganic hybrids. Here, we apply sequential infiltration synthesis, a vapor-phase hybridization technique, to selectively introduce ZnO into the organic microdomains of silicon-containing rod-coil diblock copolymers and a triblock terpolymer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-b-poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)-oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PDMS-b-PMPCS) and PDMS-b-polystyrene-b-PMPCS (PDMS-b-PS-b-PMPCS), in which the PMPCS rod block is a liquid crystalline polymer. The in-plane cylindrical PDMS-b-PMPCS and core–shell cylindrical and hexagonally perforated lamellar PDMS-b-PS-b-PMPCS films were infiltrated with ZnO with high selectivity to the PMPCS. The etching contrast between PDMS, PS and the ZnO-infused PMPCS enables the fabrication of ZnO/SiO x binary composites by plasma etching and reveals the core–shell morphology of the triblock terpolymer.

Initiator-dependent kinetics of lyotropic liquid crystal-templated thermal polymerization

In this study, we examine the polymerization kinetics with different thermal initiators in lamellar and hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) structures directed by Pluronic L64. Ammonium persulfate is used to initiate the polymerization from the water phase, whereas azobisisobutyronitrile and benzoyl peroxide are employed to commence the reaction through the monomer phase. While the mesophase structure remains intact for all the initiation systems, the kinetics of polymerization and conversion vary significantly. The obtained differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results reveal that, under same conditions, initiation from water (IFW) system results in enhanced reaction rates as well as higher monomer conversions compared to initiation from oil (IFO) one. Higher termination rate in LLC nanoconfinements induces lower reaction rates in IFO system. Moreover, our work on different LLC structures show that the effect of nanoconfinement on polymerization rate can be minimized through IFW. Chemorheology not only confirms the results obtained from DSC, but also shows that, in similar monomer conversions, the polymers obtained from IFW system exhibit an improved mechanical properties over the samples produced though IFO process.

Hybrid gels via bulk interfacial complexation of supramolecular polymers and polyelectrolytes

Hierarchical self-assembly leading to organized supramolecular structures across multiple length scales has been of great recent interest. Earlier work from our laboratory reported the complexation of peptide amphiphile (PA) supramolecular polymers with oppositely charged polyelectrolytes into a single solid membrane at a macroscopic interface. We report here the formation of bulk gels with many internal interfaces between the covalent and supramolecular polymer components formed by the rapid chaotic mixing of solutions, one containing negatively charged PA nanofibers and the other the positively charged biopolymer chitosan. We found that formation of a contact layer at the interface of the solutions locks the formation of hydrogels with lamellar microstructure. The nanofiber morphology of the supramolecular polymer is essential to this process since gels do not form when solutions of supramolecular assemblies form spherical micelles. Here, we found that rheological properties of the gels can be tuned by changing the relative amounts of each component. Furthermore, both positively and negatively charged proteins are easily encapsulated within the contact layer of the gel, which provides an interesting biomedical function for these systems.

A visible to near-infrared nanocrystalline organic photodetector with ultrafast photoresponse

Organic photoelectron conversion devices, due to their solution process and wide use in portable devices, have attracted intensive interest. In this work, a newly developed active layer of D18:Y6 is used to fabricate an organic photodetector and the device of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/D18:Y6/Phen-NaDPO/Ag shows a responsivity of 680 mA W –1 and a detectivity of 6.35 × 10 13 Jones (1 Jones = 1 cm Hz 1/2 W –1 ) at a wavelength of 850 nm. Additionally, this device shows a wide linear dynamic range of 120 dB, indicating a potential near-infrared region (NIR) detector system. Owing to the minimal exciton binding energy of 37.6 meV for Y6, a desirable energy offset for efficient electron–hole pair dissociation and an ultrafast charge transfer of ~58 ps at the interface of D18:Y6, the obtained organic photodetector has demonstrated a photoresponse time as fast as 1.8 μs upon laser light excitation without an external driven voltage. More importantly, D18 shows a preferred out-of-plane orientation with strong intensities and Y6 exhibits a preferred orientation along the in-plane direction on lamellar stacking, which facilitates charge transport. This work has demonstrated significant progress in exploring D18:Y6 NIR organic devices with a wide photosensitivity linearity and ultrafast photoresponse.

High- χ diblock copolymers containing poly(vinylpyridine- N -oxide) segments

Block copolymers exhibiting an enhanced segregation strength due to an underlying high Flory–Huggins interaction parameter (high χ) have attracted considerable attention because of their potential of forming microphase-separated domains with very small feature sizes (<10 nm) useful for next-generation lithography. Here, we report the synthesis, characterization, and self-assembly of poly(styrene)- block -poly(2-vinylpyridine N -oxide) (PS- b -P2VPNO) and poly(styrene)- block -poly(4-vinylpyridine N -oxide) (PS- b -P4VPNO) block copolymers. These PS- b -PVPNOs were obtained from the oxidation of their precursors, poly(styrene)- block -poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS- b -P2VP) and poly(styrene)- block -poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS- b -P4VP), respectively. The PS- b -PVPNOs exhibit an enhanced segregation as revealed by ordered cylindrical and lamellar structures in the sub-10 nm scale from copolymers with relatively low molecular weight. The morphologies and periodicities of the ordered structures were determined by small-angle X-ray scattering, while atomic-force microscopy was used to image the self-assembly in thin films. Estimates of the changes in disorder–order transition temperature and domain spacing are derived from a theory based on the effects of dipolar interactions. All the experimentally observed morphological changes resulting from the oxidation of P2VP and P4VP precursors can be qualitatively explained in terms of an increased dipole moment of vinylpyridine N -oxide segments. Therefore, our results demonstrate that PVPNO based block copolymers are versatile candidates toward nanopatterned structures with small feature sizes critical for the future microelectronics industry and beyond.

Insights into the copolymerization of metal–organic nanotubes from ligand mixtures using small angle neutron scattering

Metal–organic nanotubes (MONTs) are porous, tunable 1D nanomaterials akin to metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). MONTs are synthesized via metal salts and coordinating ligands akin to MOFs, but crucially they are anisotropic, unlike most MOFs. Recently, MONTs have been shown to form statistically random copolymers; however, their mechanism of growth remains largely unexplored. Full realization of the potential of MONTs necessitates a thorough understanding of the mechanism of MONT growth. Herein, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was employed to investigate the copolymerization mechanism of two 1,2,4-ditriazole ligands and to quantify the inclusion of a solvent within the MONT pores. The results show parallelepiped-shaped structures are initially formed, which then aggregate to form larger lamellar structures. Additional experimentation with a deuterated ligand showed that the reactivities of all ligands are approximately equal, causing random ligand distribution within the resulting MONT. Finally, the results quantify the amount of solvent incorporated within the nanostructure pores at different stages of the formation process. These results show that early in the reaction the MONTs contain ca. 45% solvent, and they contain ca. 55% solvent late in the reaction when the MONTs are nearly fully formed.

Impact of surface hydrophilicity on the ordering and transport properties of bicontinuous microemulsions

Microemulsions (MEs) have many industrial applications, where recent developments have shown that MEs can be utilized for electrochemical applications, including potentially in redox flow batteries. However, understanding the structure and dynamics of these systems, including at a surface, is needed to direct and rationally control their electrochemical behavior. While bulk solution measurements have provided insight into their structure, their assembly at an interface also impacts the electron (to the electrode) and ion (across the surfactant) charge transfer processes in the system. To address this shortcoming, neutron reflectivity experiments and molecular simulations have been completed that document the near surface structure of a series of deuterated water (D 2 O)/polysorbate-20/toluene MEs on hydrophilic and amphiphilic surfaces. These results show that the microemulsions form complex layered structures near a hard electrode surface, where most layers are not purely one component. Decreasing the D 2 O concentration in the ME increases the number of and purity of the layers established on the solid surface. These lamellar-type layers transition from the surface to the bulk microemulsion as a series of mixed layers (i.e., containing oil, water, and surfactant) that are consistent with perforated lamellae. Additionally, these mixed lamellae appear to become more perforated with oil and water pathways on an amphiphilic surface. Furthermore, the purity and thickness of these layers will influence the accessibility of an electrode by redox active species, as well as ion transport required to satisfy the electroneutrality condition.

Trade-off between processability and device performance in donor–acceptor semiconductors revealed using discrete siloxane side chains

Donor–acceptor polymeric semiconductors are crucial for state-of-the-art applications, such as electronic skin mimics. The processability, and thus solubility, of these polymers in benign solvents is critical and can be improved through side chain engineering. Nevertheless, the impact of novel side chains on backbone orientation and emerging device properties often remains to be elucidated. Here, we investigate the influence of elongated linear and branched discrete oligodimethylsiloxane (oDMS) side chains on solubility and device performance. Thereto, diketopyrrolopyrrole–thienothiophene polymers are equipped with various oDMS pendants (PDPPTT-Si n ) and subsequently phase separated into lamellar domains. The introduction of a branching point in the siloxane significantly enhanced the solubility of the polymer, as a result of increased backbone distortion. Simultaneously, the charge carrier mobility of the polymers decreased by an order of magnitude upon functionalization with long and/or branched siloxanes. This work unveils the intricate balance between processability and device performance in organic semiconductors, which is key for the development of next-generation electronic devices.

Charge state-dependent ion condensation near conjugated polymer backbones

Despite the technological appeal of polymeric organic mixed ionic/electronic conductors (OMIECs) for diverse applications, a deep understanding of the fundamentals of mixed charge transport in these materials, especially regarding the complex interplay between polymer, ion and solvent structure in determining transport, is lacking. Herein, extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a model OMIEC representing various electrochemically gated states are reported that reveal charge state-dependent counterion condensation. X-ray diffraction simulations based on the MD data predict a measurable change in the scattering intensity at the counterion absorption edge, indicative of counterion repositioning with charging. We leverage an operando resonant X-ray scattering technique to experimentally corroborate the simulated scattering and report excellent agreement between predicted and experimental data, confirming that counterions preferentially reside in the lamellar mid-plane of crystallites at low doping, and near the polymer backbone at higher doping. Driving forces for ion type-dependent spatial repositioning and implications thereof are discussed.

Impact of particle arrays on phase separation composition patterns

We examine the symmetry-breaking effect of fixed constellations of particles on the surface-directed spinodal decomposition of binary blends in the presence of particles whose surfaces have a preferential affinity for one of the components. Our phase-field simulations indicate that the phase separation morphology in the presence of particle arrays can be tuned to have a continuous, droplet, lamellar, or hybrid morphology depending on the interparticle spacing, blend composition, and time. In particular, when the interparticle spacing is large compared to the spinodal wavelength, a transient target pattern composed of alternate rings of preferred and non-preferred phases emerges at early times, tending to adopt the symmetry of the particle configuration. We reveal that such target patterns stabilize for certain characteristic length, time, and composition scales characteristic of the pure phase-separating mixture. To illustrate the general range of phenomena exhibited by mixture-particle systems, we simulate the effects of single-particle, multi-particle, and cluster–particle systems having multiple geometrical configurations of the particle characteristic of pattern substrates on phase separation. Our simulations show that tailoring the particle configuration, or substrate pattern configuration, a relative fluid-particle composition should allow the desirable control of the phase separation morphology as in block copolymer materials, but where the scales accessible to this approach of organizing phase-separated fluids usually are significantly larger. Limited experiments confirm the trends observed in our simulations, which should provide some guidance in engineering patterned blend and other mixtures of technological interest.

In situ imaging of three dimensional freeze printing process using rapid x-ray synchrotron radiography

Three dimensional freeze printing (3DFP) combines the advantages of freeze casting and additive manufacturing to fabricate multifunctional aerogels. Freeze casting is a cost-effective, efficient, and versatile method capable of fabricating micro-scale porous structures inside the aerogels for many different applications. The 3DFP provided the capability of fabricating highly customized geometries with controlled microporous structures as well. However, there are still many unexplained phenomena and features because of the complexity of post-processes and indirect observation methods. This study demonstrates the design and construction of the in situ imaging systems, which use the x-ray synchrotron radiography to observe freeze casting and 3DFP processes. With the advantages provided by the in situ x-ray imaging techniques, the ice crystal growth with its unique lamellar structures can be observed during the freeze casting process. Here, the movement of freeze front, material deposition, and growth of ice crystals can also be visualized during the inkjet-based 3DFP process.

Intrinsic polarization-sensitive organic photodetector with self-assembled all-polymer heterojunction

Intrinsic polarization-sensitive photodetectors (IPPDs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their simplicity in configuration, making them ideal candidates for compact and integrated polarization-sensitive sensing and imaging systems. Photoactive films with intrinsic optical anisotropy are necessary for IPPDs. This study reports an achievement of photoactive films based on all-polymer heterojunction films with in-plane optical anisotropy using a simple bottom-up self-assembly method. Both the donor (TQ1) and acceptor (N2200) polymers have the same spatial orientation with distinct anisotropy, approaching a dichroic ratio (DR) of 8. Polarization-sensitive light absorption is due to the uniaxially oriented polymer chains, which are dominated by lamellar packing with edge-on orientation. For IPPDs based on this anisotropic all-polymer heterojunction film, a photocurrent anisotropy was found with a polarized photocurrent ratio of 2.6. The detectivity of these IPPDs was found to be 1.9 × 1011 Jones (@ ∼600 nm, 0 V bias). Our work shows that oriented polymer donor–acceptor films fabricated using bottom-up self-assembly have great potential in applications, such as polarization detection.

Lipid sponge droplets as programmable synthetic organelles

Living cells segregate molecules and reactions in various subcellular compartments known as organelles. Spatial organization is likely essential for expanding the biochemical functions of synthetic reaction systems, including artificial cells. Many studies have attempted to mimic organelle functions using lamellar membrane-bound vesicles. However, vesicles typically suffer from highly limited transport across the membranes and an inability to mimic the dense membrane networks typically found in organelles such as the endoplasmic reticulum. Here, we describe programmable synthetic organelles based on highly stable nonlamellar sponge phase droplets that spontaneously assemble from a single-chain galactolipid and nonionic detergents. Due to their nanoporous structure, lipid sponge droplets readily exchange materials with the surrounding environment. In addition, the sponge phase contains a dense network of lipid bilayers and nanometric aqueous channels, which allows different classes of molecules to partition based on their size, polarity, and specific binding motifs. The sequestration of biologically relevant macromolecules can be programmed by the addition of suitably functionalized amphiphiles to the droplets. We demonstrate that droplets can harbor functional soluble and transmembrane proteins, allowing for the colocalization and concentration of enzymes and substrates to enhance reaction rates. Droplets protect bound proteins from proteases, and these interactions can be engineered to be reversible and optically controlled. Our results show that lipid sponge droplets permit the facile integration of membrane-rich environments and self-assembling spatial organization with biochemical reaction systems.

Enhancing ion transport in charged block copolymers by stabilizing low symmetry morphology: Electrostatic control of interfaces

Recently, the interest in charged polymers has been rapidly growing due to their uses in energy storage and transfer devices. Yet, polymer electrolyte-based devices are not on the immediate horizon because of the low ionic conductivity. In the present study, we developed a methodology to enhance the ionic conductivity of charged block copolymers comprising ionic liquids through the electrostatic control of the interfacial layers. Unprecedented reentrant phase transitions between lamellar and A15 structures were seen, which cannot be explained by well-established thermodynamic factors. X-ray scattering experiments and molecular dynamics simulations revealed the formation of fascinating, thin ionic shell layers composed of ionic complexes. The ionic liquid cations of these complexes predominantly presented near the micellar interfaces if they had strong binding affinity with the charged polymer chains. Therefore, the interfacial properties and concentration fluctuations of the A15 structures were crucially dependent on the type of tethered acid groups in the polymers. Overall, the stabilization energies of the A15 structures were greater when enriched, attractive electrostatic interactions were present at the micellar interfaces. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that block copolymer interfaces act as “dead zone” to significantly deteriorate ion transport, this study establishes a prospective avenue for advanced polymer electrolyte having tailor-made interfaces.

A twist grain boundary phase in aqueous solutions of the nucleic acid tetramer GTAC

At high concentration, long Watson/Crick (WC) double-helixed DNA forms columnar crystal or liquid crystal phases of linear, parallel duplex chains packed on periodic lattices. This can also be a structural motif of short NA oligomers such as the 5’-GTAC-3’ studied here, which makes four-base WC duplexes having hydrophobic blunt ends. End-to-end aggregation then assembles these duplexes into columns and columnar phases are stabilized, in spite of breaks in the double helix every four bases. But the new degrees of freedom introduced by such breaks also enable opportunities for a more diverse palette of self-assembly modes, producing striking self-assemblies of DNA that would not be achievable with contiguous polymers. These include recently reported three-dimensional (3D) periodic low-density nanoscale networks of GCCG, and the twist grain boundary (TGB) phase presented here. In the TGB, columns of GTAC pairs assemble into monolayer sheets in which the duplex columns are mutually parallel. However, unlike in the columnar crystals, these sheets stack in helical fashion into lamellar arrays in which the column axis of each layer is rotated through a 60° angle with respect to the columns in neighboring layers. This assembly of DNA is unique in that it the fills a 3D volume wherein the major grooves of columns in each layer mutually enter and interlock with the major grooves of columns in neighboring layers. This locking is optimized by small adjustments in structure enabled by the breaks in the duplex backbones.

Beyond the eutectic paradigm: nanolamellar patterns in a rapidly solidified peritectic alloy

Peritectic transformations are central to many structural alloys, yet pattern formation remains poorly understood due to complex growth dynamics and limited three-dimensional data. Here, we report an unusual two-phase microstructure in a Zn–Ag peritectic alloy subjected to rapid solidification by laser surface remelting. Synchrotron X-ray nanotomography reveals a lamellar structure of primary 𝜀-AgZn 3 and peritectic Zn with ∼700 nm spacing. Although resembling a eutectic morphology, this pattern forms without a eutectic reaction through non-steady coupled growth from the liquid. SEM and TEM-EDS confirm interface shapes and phase compositions. These findings expand the design space of peritectics for refined microstructural control.
