Least-Squares Frequency-Acquisition Algorithm

Algorithm finds frequency and phase of sinudoidal signal in presence of noise. Algorithm is special case of more-general, adaptive-paramenter-estimation techniques. Computational requirements of algorithm comparable to corresponding fast-Fourier-transform (FFT) algorithm. Algorithm works directly in time domain, whereas FFT algorithm transforms data into frequency domain for estimation and detection and requires secondary algorithm to interpolate between frequencies.

Least squares linear lags and limited memory filters

Pure autoregressive (AR) models which are linear in the short term, that is when a variable can be predicted by linear regression on a limited number of past observations, are discussed. When evenly spaced observations are available, a fixed set of AR coefficients can be calculated independent of the data. For filtering purposes, such a lag structure can be implemented recursively with an efficient algorithm. The method of computing variance recursively is also derived. A complete algorithm is presented in the appendix.

Multiple point least squares equalization in a room

Equalization filters designed to minimize the mean square error between a delayed version of the original electrical signal and the equalized response at a point in a room have previously been investigated. In general, such a strategy degrades the response at positions in a room away from the equalization point. A method is presented for designing an equalization filter by adjusting the filter coefficients to minimize the sum of the squares of the errors between the equalized responses at multiple points in the room and delayed versions of the original, electrical signal. Such an equalization filter can give a more uniform frequency response over a greater volume of the enclosure than can the single point equalizer above. Computer simulation results are presented of equalizing the frequency responses from a loudspeaker to various typical ear positions, in a room with dimensions and acoustic damping typical of a car interior, using the two approaches outlined above. Adaptive filter algorithms, which can automatically adjust the coefficients of a digital equalization filter to achieve this minimization, will also be discussed.

Further evaluation of the constrained least squares electromagnetic compensation method

Technologies exist for construction of antennas with adaptive surfaces that can compensate for many of the larger distortions caused by thermal and gravitational forces. However, as the frequency and size of reflectors increase, the subtle surface errors become significant and degrade the overall electromagnetic performance. Electromagnetic (EM) compensation through an adaptive feed array offers means for mitigation of surface distortion effects. Implementation of EM compensation is investigated with the measured surface errors of the NASA 15 meter hoop/column reflector antenna. Computer simulations are presented for: (1) a hybrid EM compensation technique, and (2) evaluating the performance of a given EM compensation method when implemented with discretized weights.

Aerodynamic design of axisymmetric hypersonic wind-tunnel nozzles using least-squares/parabolized Navier-Stokes procedure

A new procedure unifying the best of present classical design practices, CFD and optimization procedures, is demonstrated for designing the aerodynamic lines of hypersonic wind tunnel nozzles. This procedure can be employed to design hypersonic wind tunnel nozzles with thick boundary layers where the classical design procedure has been demonstrated to break down. Advantages of this procedure allow full utilization of powerful CFD codes in the design process, solves an optimization problem to determine the new contour, may be used to design new nozzles or improve sections of existing nozzles, and automatically compensates the nozzle contour for viscous effects as part of the unified design procedure.

Comparative mapping of Pluto's sub-Charon hemisphere - Three least squares models based on mutual event lightcurves

Observations of Charon transits are used here to derive preliminary maps of Pluto's sub-Charon hemisphere. Three models are used to describe the brightness of Pluto's surface as functions of latitude and longitude. Mapping results are presented using spherical harmonic functions, polynomial functions, and finite elements. A smoothing algorithm applied to the maps is described and the validity and resolution of the maps is tested by reconstruction from synthetic data. A preliminary finding from the maps is that the south polar region has the highest albedo of any location on the planet.

Least-Squares Spectral Element Solutions to the CAA Workshop Benchmark Problems

This paper presents computed results for some of the CAA benchmark problems via the acoustic solver developed at Rocketdyne CFD Technology Center under the corporate agreement between Boeing North American, Inc. and NASA for the Aerospace Industry Technology Program. The calculations are considered as benchmark testing of the functionality, accuracy, and performance of the solver. Results of these computations demonstrate that the solver is capable of solving the propagation of aeroacoustic signals. Testing of sound generation and on more realistic problems is now pursued for the industrial applications of this solver. Numerical calculations were performed for the second problem of Category 1 of the current workshop problems for an acoustic pulse scattered from a rigid circular cylinder, and for two of the first CAA workshop problems, i. e., the first problem of Category 1 for the propagation of a linear wave and the first problem of Category 4 for an acoustic pulse reflected from a rigid wall in a uniform flow of Mach 0.5. The aim for including the last two problems in this workshop is to test the effectiveness of some boundary conditions set up in the solver. Numerical results of the last two benchmark problems have been compared with their corresponding exact solutions and the comparisons are excellent. This demonstrates the high fidelity of the solver in handling wave propagation problems. This feature lends the method quite attractive in developing a computational acoustic solver for calculating the aero/hydrodynamic noise in a violent flow environment.

Least-Squares Deconvolution of Compton Telescope Data with the Positivity Constraint

We describe a Direct Linear Algebraic Deconvolution (DLAD) approach to imaging of data from Compton gamma-ray telescopes. Imposition of the additional physical constraint, that all components of the model be non-negative, has been found to have a powerful effect in stabilizing the results, giving spatial resolution at or near the instrumental limit. A companion paper (Dixon et al. 1993) presents preliminary images of the Crab Nebula region using data from COMPTEL on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory.

How to Train Your Jacobian: Least-Squares System Identification for Space-Based Coronagraphy

Stellar coronagraphs use closed-loop focal-plane wavefront sensing and control algorithms to create high-contrast dark zones suitable for imaging exoplanets and exozodiacal dust clouds around nearby stars. Model-based algorithms are susceptible to model mismatch, wherein a departure of the coronagraph's true optical characteristics from the assumed model causes reduced control loop performance. Here, we describe a simple technique for empirically tuning the wavefront control Jacobian matrix using applied deformable mirror commands and observed images. This mitigates model mismatch and recovers near-optimal control loop performance.
