Continuous method for applying antireflection coating to solar cells increases efficiency of devices by preventing energy from being reflected away, but adds little to manufacturing cost. Method consists of spraying solution on cells or glass collector plates, drying sprayed layer, and curing it. Solution is formulated to spread evenly over surfaces.
Energy storage cell qualification and related systems, methods, and devices are disclosed. A method of qualifying rechargeable battery cells includes taking measurements on the rechargeable battery cells, determining specific capacity distributions of the rechargeable battery cells as a function of a number of discharge cycles based on the measurements, determining one or more specific capacity thresholds to separate the specific capacity distributions of the rechargeable battery cells into two or more classifications, and qualifying the rechargeable battery cells into the two or more classifications based, at least in part, on the specific capacity distributions and the one or more specific capacity thresholds. A method of implementing rechargeable battery cells into product manufacturing and qualifying the rechargeable battery cells, and deploying those of the rechargeable battery cells qualified into a first classification of the two or more classifications into the product.
A production method and structure for a thin-film GaAs crystal for a solar cell on a single-crystal silicon substrate (10) comprising the steps of growing a single-crystal interlayer (12) of material having a closer match in lattice and thermal expansion with single-crystal GaAs than the single-crystal silicon of the substrate, and epitaxially growing a single-crystal film (14) on the interlayer. The material of the interlayer may be germanium or graded germanium-silicon alloy, with low germanium content at the silicon substrate interface, and high germanium content at the upper surface. The surface of the interface layer (12) is annealed for recrystallization by a pulsed beam of energy (laser or electron) prior to growing the interlayer. The solar cell structure may be grown as a single-crystal n.sup.+ /p shallow homojunction film or as a p/n or n/p junction film. A Ga(Al)AS heteroface film may be grown over the GaAs film.
Disclosed is a method of making an electrochemical cell, comprising: depositing an anode layer on a surface of a porous metal support layer; depositing an electrolyte layer on a surface of the anode layer, wherein the electrolyte layer is deposited via suspension plasma spray, wherein the electrolyte layer conducts protons; and depositing a cathode layer on a surface of the electrolyte layer. Also disclosed is a stack comprising two or more of the electrochemical cell.
Two troubled-cell indicators based on polynomial range estimation methods are used to flag cells that may violate positivity constraints. One method uses interval extension, and the second uses the range enclosure property of the Bernstein polynomial basis. Furthermore, both methods reduce compute time for the positivity preserver by limiting its application to a subset of cells. The Bernstein polynomial method remains effective as the problem dimensionality increases. Interval extension applied to the internal energy equation permits the use of the troubled-cell indicators for rational functions, though performance suffers compared to directly applying the indicators to polynomial functions.
The disclosure provides methods of making a tetracycline inducible expression system in a cell. The methods include providing the cell with a first nucleic acid sequence comprising a first promoter operably linked to a tetracycline repressor gene coding sequence, providing the cell with a second nucleic acid sequence comprising a second promoter operably linked to a coding sequence of a gene of interest wherein the second promoter is modified to include one or more tetracycline repressor protein binding sites, and determining the expression of the gene of interest in the presence or absence of tetracycline. The disclosure further provides nucleic acid sequences, vectors and cells including the tetracycline inducible modified promoter.
A method of growing primary human epithelial cells, in particular human epithelial cells using a basal formula containing individual (a) amino acids, (b) vitamins, (c) trace elements, and (d) other organics such as linoleic acid. The basal medium may be a mixture of amino acids, vitamins, and salts that constitute the basic media that is used to culture epithelial cells over a number of population doublings, e.g., over at least one week, while maintaining a normal phenotype and exerting low stress on the cultured cells, and maintaining lineage heterogeneity.

Predicting failure in a composite can be done with ply level mechanisms and/or micro level mechanisms. This paper uses the Generalized Method of Cells and High-Fidelity Generalized Method of Cells micromechanics theories, coupled with classical lamination theory, as implemented within NASA's Micromechanics Analysis Code with Generalized Method of Cells. The code is able to implement different failure theories on the level of both the fiber and the matrix constituents within a laminate. A comparison is made among maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Hill, and Tsai-Wu failure theories. To verify the failure theories the Worldwide Failure Exercise (WWFE) experiments have been used. The WWFE is a comprehensive study that covers a wide range of polymer matrix composite laminates. The numerical results indicate good correlation with the experimental results for most of the composite layups, but also point to the need for more accurate resin damage progression models.
A method of fabricating a Schottky barrier solar cell is described. The cell consists of a thin substrate of low cost material with at least the top surface of the substrate being electrically conductive. A thin layer of heavily doped n-type polycrystalling germanium is deposited on the substrate after a passivation layer is deposited to prevent migration of impurities into the polycrystalline germanium. The polycrystalline germanium is recrystallized to increase the crystal sizes to serve as a base layer on which a thin layer of gallium arsenide is vapor-epitaxilly grown followed by a thermally-grown oxide layer. A metal layer is deposited on the oxide layer and a grid electrode is deposited to be in electrical contact with the top surface of the metal layer.
An analytical method was developed to predict the heavy-ion-induced upset rate of static random access memory (SRAM) cells. The method was applied to the design of a memory with asymmetrical cells where the goal was to increase the upset rate in order to increase the number of observed upsets in a space environment. The asymmetry is achieved by increasing the drain area of selected transistors in the cell. Results from the analytical model for a space environment indicate the upset rate for the experimental asymmetrical cell (17.2 upsets/1 kbit-year) will be 4.7 times larger than the upset rate for the minimum-geometry balanced cell (3.6 upsets/1 kbit-year). The asymmetrical SRAM was designed into a test chip intended for the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES).
Disclosed herein are induction heating cells and methods of using these cells for processing. An induction heating cell may be used for processing (e.g., consolidating and/or curing a composite layup having a non-planar portion. The induction heating cell comprises a caul, configured to position over and conform to this non-planar portion. Furthermore, the cell comprises a mandrel, configured to position over the caul and force the caul again the surface of the feature. The CTE of the caul may be closer to the CTE of the composite layup than to the CTE of the mandrel. As such, the caul isolates the composite layup from the dimensional changes of the mandrel, driven by temperature fluctuations. At the same time, the caul may conform to the surface of the mandrel, which can be used to define the shape and transfer pressure to the non-planar portion.
A 2-D nodal weighted least-squares gradient method and a related face-averaged nodal gradient approach that were developed for use with triangular grids are extended to 3-D for use with tetrahedral grids. In addition, a method, developed in 2-D, to stabilize the iterative convergence of these methods on quadrilateral cells is described and extended to 3-D and remedies are investigated to determine the nodal gradient averaging approach most suitable for use with grids made up of hexahedral, prismatic, pyramidal and tetrahedral cells. Moreover, due to an interest in hypersonic flow, a robust multidimensional gradient limiter procedure that is consistent with the stencil used to construct the nodal gradients is described. Finally, we demonstrate that the resulting 3-D methods are sufficiently robust for use in scramjet computations through the solution of three canonical turbulent hypersonic flow problems as well as a physically realistic 3-D scramjet inlet geometry.
