The effects of the Asselin time filter on numerical solutions to the linearized shallow-water wave equations

In the present investigation, a one-dimensional linearized analysis is used to determine the effect of Asselin's (1972) time filter on both the computational stability and phase error of numerical solutions for the shallow water wave equations, in cases with diffusion but without rotation. An attempt has been made to establish the approximate optimal values of the filtering parameter nu for each of the 'lagged', Dufort-Frankel, and Crank-Nicholson diffusion schemes, suppressing the computational wave mode without materially altering the physical wave mode. It is determined that in the presence of diffusion, the optimum filter length depends on whether waves are undergoing significant propagation. When moderate propagation is present, with or without diffusion, the Asselin filter has little effect on the spatial phase lag of the physical mode for the leapfrog advection scheme of the three diffusion schemes considered.

Cellular monotectic model solidification

Succinonitrile (sn) was purified to a superior level using a fractional recrystallization method. The melting point of the best twice recrystallized sn was not raised by following with double distillation. This was tested using differential scanning calorimetry. The peak shape on melting also proved that double distillation after double recrystallization did not improve the quality. Stability and phase diagrams for succinonitrile and glycerol are presented.

Effect of Zn additions on precipitation during aging of alloy 8090

Precipitation events have been observed by TEM under two different aging conditions in three 'stretched' alloys, whose compositions are encompassed by the 8090 composition window but contain Zn additions of up to 1.07 wt pct. DSC was also used to obtain deeper insight of the precipitation-event effects obtainable through Zn content variation; it was thereby revealed that Zn is incorporated into the delta-prime phase, perhaps stabilizing it. Coarse, Zn-containing precipitates can form on the boundaries and within the interiors of the grains, when the Zn content reaches the presently investigated maximum of 1.07 wt pct.

Stability of the ordered orthorhombic phase in Ti-24Al-11Nb

The ordered orthorhombic 'O' phase in the Ti-Al-Nb ordered alloy system emerges either through slow cooling from above 1200 C or through isothermal aging after quenching from that temperature regime. An experimental investigation is presently conducted of the structural relationship between the O and alpha(2) phases, in order to clarify the mechanism of transition between the two. The transition occurs with the formation of a platelike alpha(2) phase within the O matrix, and may be characterized as due to a shape-deformation mechanism associated with diffusion of excess Nb away from the O/alpha(2) interface.

Spacecraft signal sources portable test system

There is a frequent need to measure the frequency stability and phase noise levels of very high performance signal sources that are required for certain spacecraft missions. These measurements need to be done at different locations as the spacecraft subsystems progress through the various stages of development, assembly, test, and integration. Allan Deviation and Phase Noise of high performance sources are generally measured by comparing the unit under test to a reference standard. Five basic requirements are associated with making these kind of measurements: (1) the reference standard performance needs to be equal or better than the unit under test; (2) the measurement system needs to accommodate odd, nonstandard measurement frequencies that can range from 4 MHz to 35 GHz; (3) warm-up frequency drift and aging can corrupt a measurement and must be dealt with; (4) test equipment generated noise must be understood and prevented from limiting the measurements; (5) test equipment noise performance must be verifiable in the field as needed. A portable measurement system that was built by JPL and used in the field is described. The methods of addressing the above requirements are outlined and some measurement noise floor values are given. This test set was recently used to measure state of the art crystal oscillator frequency standards on the TOPEX and MARS OBSERVER spacecraft during several stages of acceptance tests.

Pulsed acceleration in solar flares

We study the nonlinear dynamics of particle acceleration in solar flares by analyzing the time series of various quasi-periodic radio signatures during flares. In particular we present the radio and hard X-ray data of three flares which suppport the following tentative conclusions: (1) Particle acceleration and injection into magnetic structures occurs intrinsically in a pulsed mode (with a typical period of 1-2 s), produced by a single, spatially coherent, nonlinear system, rather than by a stochastic system with many spatially independent components ('statistical flare' produced by a fragmented primary energy release). (2) The nonlinear (quasi-periodic) mode of pulsed particle acceleration and injection into a coronal loop can be stabilized by phase locking with an MHD wave (oscillation) mode, if both periods are close to each other. (3) Pulsed injection of electron beams into a coronal loop may trigger nonlinear relaxational oscillations of wave-particle interactions. This is particularly likely when the limit cycles of both systems are similar.

MgSiO3-FeSiO3-Al2O3 in the Earth's lower mantle: Perovskite and garnet at 1200 km depth

Natural pyroxene and garnet starting material are used to study the effects of joint Fe and Al substitution into MgSiO3 perovskite at approxmiately 50 GPa. Garnet is found to coexist with perovskite in samples containing both Fe and Al to pressures occurring deep into the lower mantel (approximately 1200 km depth). The volume of the perovskite unit cell is V(sub o(Angstrom(exp 3)) = 162.59 + 5.95x(sub FeSiO3) + 10.80x(sub Al2O3) with aluminum causing a significant increase in the distortion from the ideal cubic cell. On the basis of a proposed extension of the MgSiO3-Al2O3 high-pressure phase diagram toward FeSiO3, Fe is shown to partition preferentially into the garnet phase. The stability of garnet deep into the lower mantel may hinder the penetration of subducted slabs below the transition zone.

Thermal Stability Analysis for a Heliocentric Gravitational Radiation Detection Mission

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission is designed for detailed studies of low-frequency gravitational radiation. The mission is currently a candidate for ESA's post-Horizon 2000 program. Thermal noise affects the measurement in at least two ways. Thermal variation of the length of the optical cavity to which the lasers are stabilized introduces phase variations in the interferometer signal, which have to be corrected for by using data from the two arms separately.

Equilibria bearing on the behavior of titanate phases during crystallization of iron silicate melts under strongly reducing conditions

Titanate phase relations at liquidus temperatures are determined for the CaAl2Si2O8-Fe2TiO4-FeTi2O5 system in contact with metallic iron by reflected- and transmitted-light microscopy, electron microprobe, and X-ray diffraction analyses. Results of critical equilibration runs are presented, various primary phase areas and liquidus isotherms are illustrated, and the geometry of the system is described. Three piercing points are determined, and it is noted that the compositional interrelations among coexisting crystalline and liquid phases as well as the sequence of the various titanate phases are indicative of the significant effects of the various cations on the relative stability of these phases. It is found that Al2O3 exerts a strong stabilizing effect on the phase assemblage of ulvospinel plus ferropseudobrookite relative to ilemite.

Storage Stability and Improvement of Intermediate Moisture Foods, Phase 3

Methods were determined for the improvement of shelf-life stability of intermediate moisture foods (IMF). Microbial challenge studies showed that protection against molds and Staphylococcus aureus could be achieved by a combination of antimicrobial agents, humectants and food acids. Potassium sorbate and propylene glycol gave the best results. It was also confirmed that the maximum in heat resistance shown by vegetative pathogens at intermediate water activities also occurred in a solid food. Glycols and sorbitol both achieve browning inhibition because of their action as a medium for reaction and effect on viscosity of the adsorbed phase. Chemical availability results showed rapid lysine loss before visual discoloration occurred. This is being confirmed with a biological test using Tetrahymena pyriformis W. Accelerated temperature tests show that effectiveness of food antioxidants against rancidity development can be predicted; however, the protection factor changes with temperature. BHA was found to be the best antioxidant for iron catalyzed oxidation.
