Gyromagnetic nonlinear transmission line for radio frequency signal generation and pulse compression

Disclosed are non-linear transmission lines using ferromagnetic materials to generate ferromagnetic resonance oscillations. In one aspect, a non-linear transmission line apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes an outer conductor having a first side and a second internally facing side, and an inner conductor positioned internal to the non-linear transmission line apparatus. The apparatus further includes a ferromagnetic material surrounding the inner conductor, wherein the ferromagnetic material comprises nanoparticles of an ε-polymorph of iron oxide expressed as ε-Fe2O3. The apparatus also includes a first dielectric material positioned between the outer conductor and the inner conductor, the dielectric material in contact with both the ferromagnetic material and with the second internally facing side of the outer conductor, wherein the outer conductor, the inner conductor, the dielectric material and the ferromagnetic material form the nonlinear transmission line.

Adoption of ROOT RNTuple for the next main event data storage technology in the ATLAS production framework Athena

Since the start of LHC in 2008, the ATLAS experiment has relied on ROOT to provide storage technology for all its processed event data. Internally, ROOT files are organized around TTree structures that are capable of storing complex C++ objects. The capabilities of TTrees developed over the years and are now offering support for advanced concepts like polymorphism, schema evolution and user defined collections and ATLAS makes use of these features to handle its EDM. But some original TTrees concepts, like the POSIX file model and sequential writing, remain unchanged since the beginning and could be an obstacle to achieving the performance required for High Luminosity LHC. With the HL-LHC performance goals in mind, the ROOT project developed a new storage format - the RNTuple. RNTuple, with its accompanying user API, is now in the final development stage and is planned to be production-ready at the end of 2024. Soon after that, the TTree will become a legacy format. ATLAS intends to have its main Event processing framework Athena ready to use RNTuple in the production environment as early as possible. The work on adopting RNTuple as another ROOT storage technology in Athena started already in 2021 and is now nearly complete. Although the initial goal was to focus on derived-AOD products (PHYS and PHYSLITE), with a little added effort all ATLAS data products: RDO, HITS, ESD, AOD and DAOD can be now stored in RNTuple format and transparently read back. In this paper we will describe the current state of RNTuple adoption in the Athena framework and explain the ATLAS EDM requirements that had to be met on the ROOT side to successfully integrate both environments. We will demonstrate the ability to run standard ATLAS production workflows, based on RNTuple as the Event data storage technology, and point out key advantages of the new format.

Remote Instrumentation and Data Acquisition: An Internship Research Report

This report outlines the development and implementation of a remote data acquisition system for waveform analysis using a Rohde & Schwarz oscilloscope. The project involved capturing waveform data, and transferring it to a local machine for visualization and analysis. The core logic was developed in C++ with a focus on object oriented programming and the use of polymorphism so the main application can interact with any instrument without knowing its exact type, simplifying the overall logic and making it easier to add or swap out components without changing the rest of the codebase.. The system issues Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI) via a socket connection and parses the oscilloscope’s ASCII waveform data. The C++ application was containerized using Docker for ease of portability, and reproducibility. Emphasis was placed on secure networking practices, error handling, and effective data capture. The report describes the technical steps taken, challenges encountered, and lessons learned, providing insight into the practical integration of hardware interfacing with remote computational environments.

Virtual Growth of SRF Materials: A Machine Learning Approach to Predict the Crystalline Structural Ordering in Nb Surface Oxides

Niobium's native surface oxide affects SRF cavity and superconducting qubit performance, motivating interest in controlling its crystalline structure. We combine a literature-derived machine-learning analysis with temperature-dependent XRD to study crystalline ordering in Nb2O5. Random Forest models, trained on 74 processing conditions from 17 papers and validated by leave-one-group-out cross-validation, predicted broad crystallinity outcomes well (balanced accuracy 0.809), but struggled with specific polymorph identity (0.577). Annealing temperature was the dominant predictor across all targets; oxygen partial pressure showed negligible importance, reflecting narrow literature coverage rather than physical irrelevance. Temperature-dependent XRD on anodized and H2O2-treated Niobium showed structural evolution consistent with the machine learning predictions. Our model and overall approach provide a data-driven framework for identifying and optimizing conditions that promote crystallization in initially amorphous oxides. This framework can guide the selection of growth and post-annealing conditions for Nb surfaces by narrowing the experimental parameter space, thereby reducing trial-and-error efforts in developing oxide structures relevant to SRF applications.

Intrinsic property of defective β-Ga 2 O 3 to self-heal under ionizing irradiation

Damage evolution and phase stability in defective β-Ga 2 O 3 and an irradiation-converted γ-Ga 2 O 3 layer have been studied under ionizing irradiation at 300 K. By exploring athermal nonequilibrium processes in β-Ga 2 O 3 , we succeed in identifying a self-healing mechanism that enables recovery pre-existing damage, characterized by a recovery cross-section of ~0.17 nm 2 . Remarkably, this study further demonstrates that the crystallinity of the irradiation-converted γ-Ga 2 O 3 layer improves under ionizing irradiation. More importantly, X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the highly-strained 𝛾 -phase transforms into a highly-crystalline structure without film disintegration, contrasting to that reported for isochronal annealing at 1000 K. The inelastic thermal spike calculations provide insights into the important effects of energy transfer to electrons in reordering the local atomic arrangement of both defective β- Ga 2 O 3 and 𝛾-Ga 2 O 3 . This behavior suggests a pathway for low-temperature crystallization, offering a promising strategy for fabricating ultrahigh-speed non-volatile memory devices.

Optical functions of uniaxial rutile and anatase (TiO 2 ) revisited

In this study, the optical functions of uniaxial rutile and anatase (TiO2) were determined from 200 to 850 nm (6.2 to 1.46 eV) using several of four optical techniques: (1) standard spectroscopic two-modulator generalized ellipsometry (2-MGE), (2) near-normal-incidence two-modulator generalized ellipsometry microscopy (2-MGEM), (3) Mueller matrix transmission of rutile, and (4) polarized transmission of rutile. The 2-MGE measurements yielded highly accurate values of the dielectric functions and error estimates from 1.46 to 6.2 eV, whereas the polarization-dependent transmission yielded more accurate values of the absorption coefficient below the band edge of rutile. The 2-MGEM also measured the diattenuation, which is related to the birefringence, and other parameters but at near-normal incidence at a single wavelength (577 nm).

Accelerated Selectrion of Optimal Perovskite Alloys for Solar PV using a Combined Quantum and Machine Learning Hierachiral Approach

The project aims to: (i) accelerate the discovery of “Missing HP alloys” by combining quantum mechanics and artificial intelligence machine learning approaches, and (ii) analyze the stabilities of candidate alloys, including those that do not pass selection filters (and are thus expected to degrade over time) to decipher the nature of the instabilities to guide the development of durable solar cell materials. Successful candidates will be subjected to validation experiments at NREL's state-of-the-art facilities. The discoveries this effort will provide will be directly testable and implementable and will greatly impact U.S. progress in HP PV as they will provide clear direction and motivation for experimental studies including specific material synthetic targets, device optimization, and device stability protocols. A key advantage of this effort is the feedback and guidance provided by the Industry Collaborative Work Group that we established to coordinate academic and national lab research with industry needs. The proposed work will provide a basis for and direct the development of robust and reliable HP PV. It will also provide a timely, valuable and extensive roadmap to the experimental HP PV community to enable it to focus its efforts on improving and fine-tuning promising HP compositions that this effort predicts will likely be the best performers rather than wandering in the vast chemical space for decades spending enormous resources mostly evaluating unpromising candidate materials.
