Understanding Material Strength Variabilities and Uncertainties for Component Qualification (2020 LDRD Final Report)

At its core, material specification and materials qualification require an understanding of the uncertainties in relation to a given performance metric. When simulations are used to inform the design and evaluation of these metrics, it is essential to understand the uncertainties in the underlying models and parameters that feed into those simulations. In this work, we have created a statistical framework to address uncertainties in the materials strength modeling used in integrated simulations. The framework is based on the Bayesian methodology, which allows for uncertainties to be updated as new data become available. The results of this work show how model parameters and their uncertainties can be updated as new and different types of strength data are added, as well as methods for determining which future experiment has the greatest potential to reduce the uncertainty. The statistical framework developed in this project will be utilized to assess and propagate the uncertainties in the strength models used in the programmatic simulations and to create a way to formally update those uncertainties as new data become available.

Qualification of Mitutoyo RA-2200 Roundness Tester Measuring Instrument for Clad Vent Set Cup Roundness and Flatness Inspections

Roundness (or circularity) and flatness measurements are made as part of the dimensional inspection process to certify that iridium alloy Clad Vent Set (CVS) cups meet the dimensional requirements of Iridium Alloy Cup Drawing M2D920101A005, Rev. 4 (see Figure 1). A Mahr Federal (Providence, RI) MarForm MMQ 400 Formtester is specified in the cup inspection Procedure GPHS-C-3624/25, Rev. 25 for roundness (dimension 16) and flatness (dimension 17). The Mahr Federal (Providence, RI) MarForm MMQ 400 Formtester stopped functioning in 2019. A new Mitutoyo RA-2200 Roundness Tester was purchased to replace the MMQ 400. Evaluations were conducted to qualify the new RA-2200 for CVS cup dimensional inspection work. The criterion for qualification was to ensure that the new RA-2200 instrument would yield roundness and flatness inspection results equivalent to or better than the predecessor MMQ 400 instrument.

Gimballed Tracking Mount Pointing Angle Qualification

Tonopah Test Range (TTR), in support of its testing mission and modernization effort acquired a fleet of new gimballed tracking mounts (GTMs) manufactured by BAE Systems. The new GTMs can be operated remotely during flight tests and provide near real-time target tracking data. Furthermore, test vehicle Time-Space-Position-Information (TSPI) is evaluated using post-test synchronized imagery and pointing angle measurements acquired from each tracking mount. To comply with the Nuclear Enterprise Assurance Program (NEAP), all measurements devices must be certified. In keeping with the NEAP program, qualification of the new GTMs have been assessed to confirm that their pointing angle measurements produce acceptable TSPI results. This study only evaluated the four GTMs as a stand-alone solution and found that the GTMs meet their performance requirement of 0.006 degrees RMS error (or less) for post-processed pointing angles and produced TSPI solution with error volumes on the order of one meter or less. The new GTMs will be utilized in combination with existing optical tracking mounts, which will only improve the accuracy of the resulting TSPI data product. Details regarding the approach, analysis, summary results, and conclusions are presented.

Hanford Waste Treatment Plant Effluent Management Facility Stack Effluent Monitoring: Sampling Probe Location Qualification Evaluation

The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant Effluent Management facility (EMF) stack monitor location was qualified using the LV-S1 scale model stack as a baseline, augmented by the LB-S1 and LV-S2 scale model stacks to address the Direct Feed Low Activity Waste Effluent Management Facility Vessel Vent Process (DVP) injection into the main Active Confinement Ventilation (ACV) system duct. As required by the American National Standards Institute/Health Physics Society (ANSI/HPS) N13.1-1999 standard, the scale models and its sampling locations were geometrically similar to the actual stack and the Reynolds numbers for both the actual and model stacks were >10,000. An additional criterion is that the product of the hydraulic diameter and mean velocity (DV) of the full-scale stack must be between 1/6 DV and 6 DV of the scale model stack tests. Verification tests of the EMF stack was performed at normal operating conditions. The minimum 1/6 DV value, along with the maximum 6 DV value from the scale model testing determines the range of stack flow rates for which the full-scale stack may be operated and remain in compliance with the stack verification criterion. Based on the LV-S1 scale model test DV values, the corresponding stack flow rates for the EMF stack are as listed in Table S1. Table S1. Effluent Management Facility Stack Qualified Flow Range. Stack Parameter EM-1 Minimum Qualified Stack Flow (scfm) 781 Maximum Qualified Stack Flow (scfm) 53,432 The remaining criteria for the stack verification to be considered valid involve the flow angle and velocity uniformity results. First, the flow angle at the full-scale stack must be =20°. Second, the velocity uniformity at the full-scale stack must be =20% coefficient of variance (COV). Finally, the velocity uniformity results for the actual and scale model stack tests must agree within 5% COV. These criteria were met through the full-scale stack test at the EMF. Flow angle results were less than 5°; all flow angle results were within the =20° criterion. The velocity uniformity results for each test condition ranged between 2.2% COV and 4.3% COV, which were all within the range of the target % COV values from the scale model tests on the LV-S1, LB-S1, and LV S2 scale models. Based on these stack verification test results, the EMF filtered exhaust stack sampling location meets the qualification criteria provided in the ANSI/HPS N13.1-1999 standard for all fan operating configurations. This includes each combination of ACV fan with the DVP exhausters. Further changes to the system configuration or operating conditions that are outside the qualified flow rates described in this report may require additional tests or analyses to determine compliance with the standard.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory Official TM Cover: Development and Qualification of Tungsten Reference Materials for LA-ICP-MS

Reference materials have been developed to provide areal density measurements of tungsten that is deposited on graphite when using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Several reference materials of varying areal densities have been produced using a magnetron sputtering, thin film deposition technique. With multiple reference materials that have varying areal densities, a calibration curve has been developed for translating the detector response of an ICP-MS into a quantitative measurement. These results provide the opportunity to make calibrated comparisons across graphite samples that were exposed to tungsten transport experiments for nuclear fusion research. In addition, these methods may be applied to provide individual areal density measurements for the five unique isotopes of tungsten. It is found that areal density measurements via LA-ICP-MS agree with characterization for the same samples when using the more traditional Rutherford backscattering ion beam technique. Qualification of these reference materials was completed using ion beam laboratories at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Sandia National Laboratory.

Copper plating qualification process for the fundamental power coupler waveguides for CEBAF cryomodules

To provide sufficient energy for CEBAF operation, cryomodules and components are being refurbished yearly as necessary. Copper plated fundamental power coupler waveguides are important components of the cryomodules. The integrity and quality of copper plating is critical to reduce the heat load from the waveguides into the He bath at 2.07 K. A search of copper plating resources is underway for plating or re-plating CEBAF-style waveguides. This effort ensures a continuous capability of copper plating on cryomodule components, especially on waveguides. To qualify plating vendors, the waveguide copper plating specifications were revisited, and a thorough plating evaluation process is being developed. The evaluation process ranges from coupon testing to sample waveguide qualification. Recent results are summarized and future work is planned.
