CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2A-TransOps)

The Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) product contains one hour of instantaneous Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The SSF combines instantaneous CERES data with scene information from a higher-resolution imager such as Visible/Infrared Scanner (VIRS) on TRMM or Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua. Scene identification and cloud properties are defined at the higher imager resolution and these data are averaged over the larger CERES footprint. For each CERES footprint, the SSF contains the number of cloud layers and for each layer the cloud amount, height, temperature, pressure, optical depth, emissivity, ice and liquid water path, and water particle size. The SSF also contains the CERES filtered radiances for the total, shortwave (SW), and window (WN) channels and the unfiltered SW, longwave (LW), and WN radiances. The SW, LW, and WN radiances at spacecraft altitude are converted to Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) fluxes based on the imager defined scene. These TOA fluxes are used to estimate surface fluxes. Only footprints with adequate imager coverage are included on CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1the SSF which is much less than the full set of footprints on the CERES ES-8 product. Inter-comparison between AIRS and IASI through Retrieved Parameters

A State-of-the-art retrieval algorithm dealing with all-weather conditions has been applied to satellite/aircraft instruments retrieving cloud/surface and atmospheric conditions. High quality retrievals have been achieved from IASI data. Surface, cloud, and atmospheric structure and variation are well captured by IASI measurements and/or retrievals. The same retrieval algorithm is also applied to AIRS for retrieval inter-comparison. Both AIRS and IASI have a similar FOV size but AIRS has a higher horizontal resolution. AIRS data can be interpolated to IASI horizontal resolution for inter-comparison at the same geophysical locations, however a temporal variation between AIRS and IASI observations need to be considered. JAIVEx has employed aircraft to obtain the atmospheric variation filling the temporal gap between two satellites. First results show that both AIRS and IASI have a very similar vertical resolving power, atmospheric conditions are well captured by both instruments, and radiances are well calibrated. AIRS data shown in retrievals (e.g., surface emissivity and moisture) have a relatively higher noise level. Since the this type of retrieval is very sensitive to its radiance quality, retrieval products inter-comparison is an effective way to identify/compare their radiance quality, in terms of a combination of spectral resolution and noise level, and to assess instrument performance. Additional validation analyses are needed to provide more-definitive conclusions.

CERES Single Satellite Footprint, TOA and Surface Fluxes, Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Edition2A)

Large Scale Covariability in the Aerosol-SST-Precipitation Relation: A Satellite Perspective

Although large scale aerosol effects on precipitation have attracted increasing attention in recent years, significant uncertainties still remain in the current understanding of'such effects. One of the factors contributing to these uncertainties is the availability of aerosol data sets that are sufficiently long, stable, and comprehensive to be used for climate analysis. Such data sets are crucial for any long-term studies that are needed to demonstrate the statistical significance of large scale aerosol effects on precipitation when compared to the effects from other climate factors, such as remote or local sea surface temperature (SST) variability (ENSO. etc.). A longterm consistent aerosol product that complements the existing MODIS and AVHRR aerosol products is therefore needed to minimize aerosol data uncertainty issues for such Studies. The SeaWiFS instrument was primarily designed to measure ocean color, and it has been the mayor source for providing a comprehensive global data set of such measurements since its launch in 1997. Besides being used in this capacity, however, the well-calibrated set of radiances measured in the wavelength range from the visible (0.41 m) to the near infrared (0.87 m) is also well suited to creating long-term climate data records of aerosols. Recently, a new 13-year SeaWiFS aerosol optical depth dataset has been developed that expands its capacity to be used for such atmospheric studies. This SeaWiFS aerosol product provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to examine the covariability of aerosol, SST and precipitation on both a regional and global scale. We also use concurrent independent SST (NOAA Optimum Interpolation, OI, SST V2) and precipitation (GPCP V2) datasets for this study. We will present and discuss results from this study over several aerosol hot spot regions ( -,North Atlantic. South Atlantic, Western Pacific, Indian Ocean etc.) during the SeaWIFS data period (1997 -- current) from this study will be presented and discussed. These results will highlight the value and impact of this unique product to climate studies

BOREAS Level-3b Landsat TM Imagery: At-sensor Radiances in BSQ Format

For BOREAS, the level-3b Landsat TM data, along with the other remotely sensed images, were collected in order to provide spatially extensive information over the primary study areas. This information includes radiant energy, detailed land cover, and biophysical parameter maps such as FPAR and LAI. Although very similar in content to the level-3a Landsat TM products, the level-3b images were created to provide users with a directly usable at-sensor radiance image. Geographically, the level-3b images cover the BOREAS NSA and SSA. Temporally, the images cover the period of 22-Jun-1984 to 09-Jul-1996. The images are available in binary, image format files.

Multi-frequency, multi-polarization SAR and radiometer sea ice classification

Microwave remotely sensed data were acquired simultaneously in March 1988 over Beaufort, Chukchi, and Bering Sea ice using the JPL multifrequency, polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and multifrequency dual-polarization GSFC radiometer. The experiment was conducted as a series of coordinated underflights of the DMSP SSM/I satellite radiometer to validate ice products derived from its radiance values. Concurrent flights by an NRL P-3 aircraft enabled overlapping high-resolution, single-frequency images to be acquired over the same surfaces using a Ka-band scanning microwave radiometer. Precise coregistration to an accuracy of 100 m, +/- 25 m enables comparison of temporally and spatially coincident active and passive microwave datasets. Three-channel polarimetric SAR data are compared with dual-polarized radiometer data at several SSM/I frequencies, showing backscatter signatures to be highly correlated with radiometric temperatures. Further comparisons are used to evaluate ice concentration retrievals and to show how multiparameter datasets can be used to resolve ambiguities present in identifying certain sea ice forms with a single microwave instrument.

TROPOMI Geometry-dependent Lambertian-Equivalent surface Reflectivity (GLER) Product for Improved Trace-Gas Retrieval

Accurate information about the reflectivity of the Earth's surface is required for most satellite retrievals of atmospheric composition, and this information is generally taken from monthly surface reflectivity climatology that neglects angular dependence. Previously we introduced Geometry-dependent Lambertian-equivalent surface reflectivity (GLER) which captures solar and satellite viewing angle dependence as well as daily and seasonal changes. GLER is calculated from simulations of Rayleigh-only top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiances over non-Lambertian surfaces. We use NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) product over land and the wind-dependent Cox–Munk wave-facet slope distribution including water-leaving radiance over water to accounts for surface BRDF. We have developed global GLER product, previously for the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and recently for Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) with several new improvements and updates. We have implemented the near real time daily V006 MODIS MCD43C1 BRDF data and gap-filled with a daily BRDF coefficient climatology created from 2002-2017 V006 MCD43GF data. The NASA’s Global Modelling Initiative hourly 0.25 x 0.25 deg Replay simulations are used for more accurate determination of pixel specific terrain pressure. To improve detection of seasonal snow/ice scenes, we use the 4-km snow cover product from the Interactive Multi-sensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS). Finally, we use an improved version of the vector linearized discrete ordinate radiative transfer (VLIDORT) for update of the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance look-up-tables (LUTs). We demonstrate how the use of GLER is beneficial to TROPOMI’s high spatial resolution (up to 3.5 km x 3.5 km) measurements to monitor atmospheric trace gas pollutants down to the sub-city scale.

Improved GEO Derived LW Broadband Fluxes for the Edition5 CERES SYN1Deg Data Product

The NASA Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project provides over 24 years of accurately observed top-of-the-atmosphere (TOA) and surface flux data record for climate monitoring and diagnostic studies. The major level-3 data products include SSF1deg, SYN1deg, FluxByCldTyp, and EBAF data. The CERES SYN1deg product provides 1° gridded observed TOA fluxes and computed surface fluxes based on hourly GEO clouds and derived broadband TOA fluxes. The hourly GEO derived fluxes fill in the temporal gaps between the Terra and Aqua CERES observations. In order to maintain a climate quality dataset the GEO cloud and flux retrievals are consistent over the record. The CERES project is preparing for Edition 5 product providing an opportunity to improve the GEO flux retrieval algorithms. To achieve this, the GEO satellite channel radiances are calibrated against the Aqua-MODIS calibration reference. For SW the GEO channel radiances are then converted to broadband radiances using empirical and theoretical models. The SW broadband radiances are then converted to fluxes using the same CERES angular directional models. For LW the GEO channel radiances are directly converted to LW fluxes utilizing empirical models. The resulting GEO derived broadband fluxes are then normalized to the CERES fluxes regionally by regressing the instantaneous coincident flux pairs. The normalized GEO fluxes are then tied to the CERES instrument calibration, which is very stable over time. This study will attempt to improve the GEO derived LW fluxes based on machine learning technique for the future Edition5 SYN1deg data product.
